Shane! New follower and just starting a smart home. Would you recommend these over Caseta smart switches if you were to advise someone starting a new smart home?
Great video Shane! I’ve used Inovelli (Zigbee) for a number of years now…rock solid product. This Matter over Thread version will elevate this brand to another level! I understand that an mmWave occupancy sensor version is coming soon as well.
The fact that one can use an existing "dumb switch" on a multi-switch circuit makes these the cheaper option in that scenario. I have both Lutron Diva and Leviton Decora smart switches and had to purchase at additional cost, matching companion switches for use in several, 2 and 3 way switch setups in my house.
Inovelli was the first switch that made me rethink if my future switches should be Lutron. Lutron is still incredible, but Inovelli offers so many features.
@@djLovelyTime in my house if I went all Caséta I would be at 70 devices just on lighting, fans, and shades. No picos. I live in a 3,000 sq ft 4 bedroom house. I could probably reduce some of them to make room for picos, but my point is that it’s possible to run into the 75 device limit in a somewhat “typical” American house.
Really wish the dimming was capacitive (or had a physical slider) instead of long press. That would make it perfect. Absent that, it’s still not 100% guest-friendly
The lutron sunnata dimmer has a capacitive touch slider, but it's about $500 usd and you need a professional to install and programming another $500 hub.
I've had one pre-ordered for months. Can't wait to try it out. Finally a switch that comes in several color schemes. UPDATE: I've converted most lights in my house to LED. They all use less than 25W. These switches won't work with less than a 25W light unless you also install a bypass, which is an additional cost. Check the specs for the light you plan to use this switch on. If it draws less than 25W, be prepared to also purchase the bypass or a different brand of switch.
Lutron’s best feature is their rock solid reliability. After three years I have yet to have one connection failure and they have always managed to reconnect right away whenever I have had to restart my modem or router. If Innovelli can provide that kind of reliability then they will be a great option. Can they maintain any kind of basic function if the internet goes out?
Features are great but i've NEVER had a lighting system as reliable as Lutron. Lutron's engineering is ridiculous. Lutron and Vantage are still Gold Standard lighting systems. I LOVE these low cost functional Dimmers though. Few of us want to wire ever load with a $200 plus dimmer.
I've been using Innovelli's zwave switch and the zigbee switch. Zigbee switch is setup in smart bulb mode with two Philips hue bulbs. Works awesome! All wonderful products. I was ecstatic when Innovelli announced a matter/thread switch. Mine is pre-ordered!
I'm 99.99% Lutron Caseta. However, we have 1 Lutron Aurora switch controlling the Hue bulbs in the kitchen. I'd love to replace that with this switch instead since it does sooooo much more! Thanks for the review.
Great video Shane! These look like they have a ton of potential. I have several Lutron switches and they are bulletproof, but the added functionality at roughly the same cost makes these very tempting. Im curious to see a long term review for connectivity issues or lack there of.
Yea the connectivity is the real question here, Lutron gets nothing but praise for its connectivity and I’ve only ever seen people complain about thread online
@@goobot1I have thread enabled receptacles, air purifiers, Hue lighting, etc etc, have never encountered any connectivity issues. As a matter of fact, using HomeKit and Siri has greatly improved response times using Thread/Matter. Problem is that many users online have an ecosystem filled with dozens of different brands that all have their limited capabilities with Thread/Matter. Keep it simple, limit the amount of hubs and different manufacturers and it’ll work great.
The ZigBee (Blue) and Z-Wave (Red) variants of the switch have support for 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, and long press on all three buttons (up, down, config). Not sure if that will be coming to the release version of the White Switch, or if that's a Home Assistant-exclusive thing.
Any thoughts on the feel of these. I love the feel of mechanical switches, some of these smart switches aren’t clicky enough. What is the best way to trigger dimming if you still want a single tap for on/off.
I've been asking for smart switches with "smart bulb mode" for a while. Many old homes in the US use single-pole switches for a single ceiling fan in each room. This was back when the fan had pull cords to turn on the light or change motor speeds. Fast forward to today, and those ceiling fans have RF remotes, so the wall switch is totally useless. You just leave it on. Id much rather have a switch that leaves constant power on to the appliance while giving me scene control of the fan speeds, smart bulb(s) in the fan fixture, and any other smart lighting in the same room. There are ways to get around this with Wyze and IFTTT, but everything is convoluted and requires a subscription to create scenes/automations. Loved the concept of the Inovelli Red switches, but they were never in-stock. I hope the company can produce and support this new white series, but for now it's all early-adopter preorders and most of the supporting products are in beta-test (as of early Sep 2024). Waiting to see their whole White-series product suite on the market and functioning before I invest in $400+ of new switches and fan controllers.
I’m cautiously optimistic here. I have a ton of Lutron switches and love their reliability. Don’t have any matter over thread devices yet. How do you think they’ll compare in the reliability area? Or will we have to wait for a year or real world experience to know for sure?
Absolutely love Inovelli! I have their red series (and a couple old black series) in one house and Blue Series in the other and I can't say enough good things about these products and the company. The founder, Erik, is super active on Reddit and their forums
Very great smart dimmer product. I’m just a little bit sad 😢 to not have this product available in Europe. May be plan in the futur (don’t find any information about it on the web site)
This thing definitely ticks a LOT of boxes for me. It's a shame smart switches are so expensive, as I'd love to simply replace every switch in my house but that's not feasible. Also the smart bulb feature is really great. You CAN achieve this with any smart switch by simply not connecting it fully to the circuit, but this is way easier and you can easily change the mode. Lots of colors, lots of installation options, tons of triggers, Matter/Home Assistant support, and the fact that the light can be controlled based on events is PERFECT as one thing I look for in LED lighting is the ability to both be used as notifications and to go away at bedtime.
This is great and all, but I just need a simple dimmer switch to control track lights that I can connect to my Google Home and HomeKit without any extra hardware.
Damn these are nice. Makes me regret going Lutron now but i need a good smart fan switch so i think ill be getting the fan version of these switches! Great review!
I use their Z-Wave line and they are indeed very nice. I might replace some with Thread as things settle down. HomeKit probably doesn’t support this but the LED bar can also perform effects like strobe or sequence like the KITT scanner effect. Use that on my Z-Wave switches when doors are left open. I also change the LED bar colors to be white during the day or blue at night. During different holidays I also have a scheduled scene to change them to specific colors.
Just ordered a few of these with your link! This is exactly what I was looking for. Built-in motion sensing would have been awesome, but I intend to pair these with thread enabled motion sensors.
Very nice switch for HomeKit. One problem... Though matter devices stay connected to each other when the internet is down, the Apple Home Hubs themselves blink out when they lose the internet.
So, super excited about this switch, but what about lamp (plug in) modules etc.. Inovelli doesn’t have any such devices? So what do recommend for thread/matter devices such as plug in modules?
Thanks for the great video Shane! One of the beauties of the Lutron system is the RF connection, very reliable and fast. Have you tested how fast/reliable this one is in comparison to the lutron? Thanks!
I have been looking for smart-bulb mode switches, this is perfect! Mainly to debunk switches for guests. In Smart-Bub Mode, would it need to be connected to scenes to control multiple smart bulbs connected to the wires? Like if my dining room has 4 nanoleaf downlights, would it automatically control all 4 in smart-bulb mode, or do I need to connect each press to a scene?
Thanks Shane. It doesn’t look like the smaller side button slides up and down to dim the lights. Can you confirm? I have a couple of locations where the smart bulb mode would be perfect, but I would like it to work similarly to the Lutron Diva Smart Dimmer where the side button slides to adjust brightness.
Looks great! Most of the switches I currently use have an led ring the stays lit when the light is off, making them easy to find in the dark. Can the status bar stay lit when the light is off? I assume so. But it is the one thing I was looking for and could not really see in the video.
Im still surprised that one else has come up with something like the Lutron Aurora Dimmer knob. Only thing close is a Go Control Zwave dual button remote. But its zwave so need that...
I like the smart light option for constant power. I wish you showed the lights turn on because I am hoping that delay when you hit the switch was jut the home app delay? For the price, I dont see replacing all my switches but competition is good. Maybe someone will come out with one that just has the smart light feature.
Unfortunately I couldn't get the light switch and the ceiling light fixture in the same shot to show that. If you look closely, you might can see the light coming on/off based on the brightness of the shot. It happens a little faster than it shows in the home app. But keep in mind, when using smart bulb mode, the speed of the automation is also largely affected by the responsiveness of the smart bulb being used. This is also why I added some clips showing the Eve Flare (globe light) coming on and off with the switch. The Eve Flare also connects via Thread, like the Inovelli Switch.
@@ShaneCreates Interesting, so have you gone the way of BT Thread mostly with Matter? I tested thread and had random disconnects, and tested matter over wifi and went that way. So I converted my tuya based wifi lights over to 42 wifi mater lights. In fact I just converted everything over to wifi matter or native HomeKit. I think Matter over wifi account for 53 devices (well more if you count the 17 sensors from the Aqara hub, and switchbot hub 2). Well a lot more I wont get into, but I wonder if the automation with that switch would trigger they light faster if it was controlling a wifi matter device vs thread matter device. I went with the AiDot OREiN lights and they are instant with automations from aqara sensor triggers.
Do you know if they have any plans for a double pole version like the aqara double rocker? We installed the double rocker based on the premis of smart bulb mode, but it just disables the switch.
I have the Z Wave ones and they work fantastically. Been wary of thread technology but this might be the first device worth looking into. Just sucks that thread is on the same frequency as wifi...
I don’t feel there is anything to be wary of with thread. My setup is about 50% thread based now and works fine. When I set it up, over a year ago now I guess, it was a little rocky at first with things not wanting to find each other and no real way to force that process other than just waiting, but that never happens anymore. It just works and is super responsive. Quickest products in my house.
I’m replacing all my Insteon dimmer and keypad link with Lutron Caseta Diva. Those are really expensive. I might stop and buy one Inovelli per area. With them, a double click when leaving the place could turn off all lights.
I’m building my house right now using all Hue slim lights. So won’t have WiFi / hub at first I got 2 questions Will these work in smart switch mode without a hub? Will they work with Homey I’m thinking of using homey as my smart hub
I am soon selling my home with an Insteon network (Apple HomeKit plugin with Indigo software) and will be rebuilding a new system from scratch to be 100% Apple HomeKit. I am pumped about the inovelli switches. They sound bullet proof. I was going to use Lutron Caseta but this changes everything, thanks for the review!
I agree with @gregghayes6710. It should be able to do just that, depending on your setup. Inovelli makes Z-Wave, Zigbee and Matter versions of this switch. They Zigbee and Z-Wave versions even have more configurable parameters. I have a Blue series controlling my LIFX LED strips. It works great!
I’m always amazed by how the American electric infrastructure looks so fragile/toy like. Anyway; looks like a nice feature rich product, hope they make something like this for Europe 👌🏼
@@AlmightyEye Not yet, when I first pre-ordered the estimated time frame was end of April. Been pushed back quite a few times. Shane getting one to show us is good news though. I’m guessing they’re close to sending them out. (Maybe this week.)
@@8Arachne8 thanks for taking the time out for the update. Yeah, they start sending out the first products to reviewers and stuff, so they’re most def close to public release!!
Great review, Shane! When I first heard of these and did a bit of research, I preordered a 5 pack! I just got their email 2 days ago noting that they got their final Mater testing and OTA processes approved and will start shipping in a few weeks. I have 2-3 light switches in the house that still have a cover to prevent users from pressing the buttons and mess with my smart bulbs. Moreover, I just have several areas where I would like to use Smart Bulbs but have avoided it because of the headache. That alone would make me happy. Add in that I can control 2 other devices and get color notifications… I was in love! Can’t wait to get these and start playing with the different possibilities! Final note: thanks for showing it with the Eve Flare as I had not yet considered that as part of the set ups.
I’ve been waiting over a year for something like this! Hoping they come out with a battery-powered controller/remote (think Lutron Pico) for smart bulbs without a corresponding hardwired switch. That way you could control table lamps, etc with the same consistent interface for everything.
Cool but no shot I’d replace a rock solid Lutron switch with something matter over thread just yet. Nice sponsor, I have the Anker power bank and it’s an absolute monster.
i like the switch so far but am having some issues getting the light bar automation to work. Pretty basic when front light on light bar green, when front light off light bar red. Also i have neurtral wires but didnt hook them up to the switch. Is there any benefit of doing so or downside of not?
Great review. I was wondering which new Matter over Thread light switches would come along and eat Lutron Caseta's lunch. They've been the reigning king for a long time. Of course I finally have ALL of my switches moved over to Caseta :).
My biggest problem is smart recess light. I currently use scripting in home assistant to solve this problem in my primary residence but it would be nice to see a switch that can actually solve that problem natively especially in my rental unit where I don't have home assistant installed.
Key questions: - automation response time? - Max load especially LED startup load? - latency or any network lags so far? - any heat coming off the switch after time under significant load?
Availability has always been Inovelli's weak point. Well, that and price (if you only need a "switch"). I pre-ordered a Blue series to try out, took many, many months to get. OK, we did have a pandemic to deal with, and all their products were perpetually out of stock. The Blue also has many of these options, more than I could reasonably use, so I put it in my garage (4-way, but that's a different set of issues nothing to do with them). Now that I have a few smart bulbs (outdoor sconces), I might have to think about these, especially since they are Matter. But just wiring them always hot and using the existing switch as a scene controller is working. And recently, the LED bar would have been useful by the front door to let us know if something is not secured before we leave. The fan canopy module is intriguing, although my Bond works well.
This switch is what us home automation enthusiasts have been waiting for long ! However, just imagine the complexity it implies … to manage, say, some scenarios on a smart bulb plus the effects on the built in led, you’ll easily reach 10 HomeKit scenarios. Multiply this by 30 light circuits in the house. The irony is that, Matter removes the technical needs for bridges, but there seems to be a desperate need for smarter, more scalable and more user friendly controllers than the average smart speaker.
I'm looking forward to trying these. The multiple tap and long press options are a game changer for scene control! I was just wishing I could find a way to automate some things that way. The LED indicator on the switch looks like it works similarly to the old iDevices wall switches where the LED is treated as a separate light. I've loved using those for notices in my automations and this one looks even better. Did you happen to notice if the switch will retain a remotely set dim level when turned off and then physically turned on? I really want automation that sets dim levels on my switches after a certain time at night but none of my current switches will remember the dim level unless physically dimmed at the switch.
OMG this brand looks amazing! thanks shane for always bringing great products to the forfrunt! I am so hyped for the fan controller. my home has 1 switch for fan and light and i have only been able to use rilay switches to get fan and light to work in home kit separetly. with this fan controller i will be able to control fanspeed. i want the so bad! 😁
wonder if it will work with my Ziz BR30 lights (I have 10 that came with the house I bought last year) as I don't think my lights work with Home Kit that I've seen. Hoping Inovelli comes out with a smart switch for gas fireplaces. would love to enable a remote for the 3 I have. and set them up so that they turn off after an hour or 2
Looks like it has everything except power usage features but it definitely gots me thinking of switching from meross. Im personally not buying anything else that isn’t matter and thread

I don’t believe inovelli makes motion sensors but you can pair any sensor on your smart home ecosystem to automate with the light switch.
What wall plate can you use on the switch, are they all the same size between no matter what light switch you use?
They recommend using the Lutron Claro wall plates as the colors available will match.
Will this work with hue?
I’m building my house right now using all Hue slim lights. So won’t have WiFi / hub at first I got 2 questions
Will these work in smart switch mode without a hub?
Will they work with Homey I’m thinking of using homey as my smart hub
Can you assign a HomeKit scene to the action button?
yes
Thank you!
Not bad 👍smart bulb awesome
I wish it has a HUB like Lutron?
@shane how is the new light switch working after using it now for a few days? Still worth ordering it?
I had been using it for a while before I ever filmed the video. Everything discussed in the video still holds true.
Is it really on thread in the video ?
It seems a bit slow to do the action, just as wifi
And too bad that it is not available in EU
Nice! 🔥🔥
How does the switch communicate? WiFi? Zwave, Zigbee?
Thread
I am soon selling my home with an Insteon network (Apple HomeKit plugin with Indigo software) and will be rebuilding a new system from scratch to be 100% Apple HomeKit. I am pumped about the inovelli switches. They sound bullet proof. I was going to use Lutron Caseta but this changes everything, thanks for the review!
Oh, looks like they also have a zigbee version! Cool to see the exact same product supporting all the protocols
Yes I’ll get two
Does this work in the UK?
No, I’ve just checked on their website it’s 120v only.
240V support?
120V AC
Will this crowd your wifi network?
No since it connects over thread and not wifi.
Be awesome if it could dim Hue bulbs. I’m still stuck sourcing Lutron connected bulb remotes to control Hues at the panel.
Sounds like it will do exactly that.
@@donivan919 thanks fellas, I need to check out their other switches, I was just commenting on this particular one.

Looks cheap is expensive.
I’m always amazed by how the American electric infrastructure looks so fragile/toy like.
Anyway; looks like a nice feature rich product, hope they make something like this for Europe 👌🏼
Eve are you watching???
🙌🏼 Been waiting for this! Have 5 on pre-order, arriving soon I hope. 🤞🏼
Have u received shipping notification yet? Just ordered a 5 pack today. Wondering if they’re shipping since it’s past mid-June technically.
Have some on preorder. Can’t wait to get the last of Insteon out of my home.
I bought 20 of these for my new home. I have had nothing but problems with them cutting out losing their connection and even blinking issues.
What is the reliability compared to the Lutron ?
Thanks for sharing. Great examples of how useful these can be. I’m excited for you! I hope you love your new smart switches!
I’ve been waiting over a year for something like this! Hoping they come out with a battery-powered controller/remote (think Lutron Pico) for smart bulbs without a corresponding hardwired switch. That way you could control table lamps, etc with the same consistent interface for everything.
Oh yea that would be cool. Matter over thread seems like the perfect technology for a button like that too!
Sounds great. How’s your review so far. Still recommend
Yep!
Review the iotty smart switch next.
Awesome product, smart bulb compatibility wins me. But, probably USA only like everything else. Australia here. Great review, thanks 🙏.
Key questions:
- automation response time?
Hoping Inovelli comes out with a smart switch for gas fireplaces. would love to enable a remote for the 3 I have. and set them up so that they turn off after an hour or 2
Unfortunately not available in Australia it seems (240V)
Looks like it has everything except power usage features but it definitely gots me thinking of switching from meross. Im personally not buying anything else that isn’t matter and thread
Our new house was outfitted with Deako switches. Just curious if yo have looked into them. Their smart switches now support Matter i'm told.
Love it! Unfortunately, only seems to be avail for US & Canada 😢, not Germany 🇩🇪 where I live and need them.
Truly premium product matter over thread, will still wait for something similar to be less than $20
Nice review of the smart switches Shane
