  • Climbing Mount Fuji: In August, a friend and I climbed Mt Fuji. The climb was worth it for the amazing Fuji sunrise and for that I recommend it.

    at the 5:00 mark, my reaction was "oh, they actually have people making sure that the tourists don't go to sleep in sub-zero temperatures and die on their benches". His reaction was "Oh, a crudely made dark lord of the sith wants to ruin my friends snooze. What an asshat. Time to eat my chocolate I suppose"
    I've seen that part three times now, laughed just as hard every time xD

    Ok, so it appears my Mt. Fuji expedition was very different. I went there on June (off season). I was staying at a hostel, waiting for good weather. I had booked 1 week, and on the 4th morning, Clear Skies! My hostel manager actually drove me up to one of the stations, and I started climbing alone.
    Met a random Japanese man halfway through, and we teamed up. NO other people were seen. We did the climb, circled the crater, and walked back. Pretty amazing!!!
    Be aware that there are no public buses off season, or you can be lucky to stumble on a random person, who will be like "I will drop u off at your guesthouse!"

    I was a "bullet climber", and ill prepared. Only a light jacket and thin hardshell pants. I still made it to the top in about 4 hours or so. But once there, slept against some locked door. And when I woke up, I was freezing my rear off. I actually descended about 500 ft to a sheltered area , just to warm up, and then had to go back up for the frozen sunrise.
    Lesson learned. Bring warm clothes. Very warm clothes. And a pillow.

    I had to come and re-watch some of your old videos while reading your book and I am really enjoying them (both the old videos and the book)! You've accomplished so much throughout the years, and grown a lot as a person and content creator. The book was a great idea. Reading about your ups and downs, making difficult decisions, setting goals and pushing through even when it's not always easy is super motivating. All of it wrapped in a great sense of humour. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can achieve in the next 10 years and in the meanwhile I'll get back to working on my personal goals. Thank you for this motivation, it was much needed!

    Googled Mt Fuji and learned that it was the tallest mountain in Japan. So I went "Huh! I wonder if I could climb the tallest mountain in my country". That was before I realised that the tallest mountain in my country is the freaking Mt. Everest.

    • @00fabian7
      @00fabian7 8 років тому +316

    • @karkinissan
      @karkinissan 8 років тому +63

      Fabian Flat surfaces may be boring but they are so much more convenient for transportation. Where I'm from, Nepal, there were some districts that were inaccessible up until 5 years ago because constructing a road there was next to impossible back then because of the mountains. But, mountains do make for beautiful scenery. :D

    My dad and I did this when I was a kid. Hardest thing I have ever done behind quitting smoking but also the most rewarding. It doesn't look hard but, OH MY GOD! My Dad had to keep pushing me along. We bought the walking sticks and had them stamped at every station. He still has his but mine got blown away in Hurricane Wilma when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale. I would HIGHLY recommend doing this for anyone visiting Japan. It is the greatest feeling when standing at the top looking down on creation. Thanks for posting this. It really brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

    I went up Mt Fuji yesterday over the Gotemba trail and it was really surprised cause it was very different than what I thought it would be like:
    - it's easily doable in a day trip: 8h up and down including 1h at the top
    - there was no one around (this might be due to a different trail and off season though)
    - the climb is long but not technically difficult, there's no climbing sections or anything
    - going down the gravel is fast and a lot of fun

    Totally unintended but i noticed that i commented on the same day that this was posted 7 years ago, Nice

    You didn't miss much not having a reservation at one of the station inns Chris. You are squeezed together head-to-toe with dozens of people in a blistering hot space to sleep. I maybe got a 2 hour nap in, but my buddy stayed awake the entire time. We ended up leaving early and hiked the remaining mountain due to the sheer discomfort. The congestion of people delayed at various switchbacks was easily the most annoying part of the climb.
    The sunrise was magnificent and I absolutely do not regret climbing Mt. Fuji, but this Japanese proverb rings absolutely true: "A wise man will climb Mt Fuji once; a fool will climb Mt. Fuji twice".
    The onsen and ryokan stay after climbing though: HEAVEN ON EARTH

    My wife and I had a great time hiking Fuji! It took us about 12 hours from Station 5 to the top and back down. We were taking our time though. It can be done in 3 or 4 hours. We saw several people running up. The only downside is that there are really only a handful of days each year with visibility at the top, but it's worth it even if you're just staring at clouds.

I can only imagine what an out-of-shape 22 year old like myself would say as he slowly descends into madness and lunacy. Not fat, just out of shape, but the pain looks real lol. I climbed it in August of 1964 when I was stationed at Yokota AB. I had actually attempted it 2 times earlier, but flat gave out before reaching the summit. I was terribly out of shape at age 24. I don't remember it being that cold there, don't think I even had a jacket. There weren't near as many people to deal with back then, but the place is a lot more modernized now. Things you can purchase there now, were not available back then. I would like to go back and do it again, but Japan is too expensive these days.

      ***** I don't know what the current exchange rate is, but what you mentioned is probably pretty close. When I was over there in 1962-1965 the rate was 360 yen to a dollar plus Japanese things were just plain low priced back then. Yes, it is the best memories of my life. Thanks for commenting.

  • @LordArioh

    I did it during the day, alone. I thought to myself I'll just walk around or squeeze myself somewhere until sunrise, no problem. The walking up was pretty tough, but no illness or whatsoever. I had no idea how to book a dorm, that is what you really need to do in that situation. So at midnight it started raining like hell, and nowhere to hide. I was completely wet and freezing and would probably die if I stayed for 5-6 more hours. So I just went down in a middle of a night. Luckily I wasn't alone who made this mistake. That is when you think, never again, but this unaccomplished mission that I missed sunrise is killing me, so this summer I got other parts of Japan to explore, but next summer I'll hopefully go with my friends for sunrise, no matter what. That is an adventure you will never forget.

Fuji yesterday and we've gone through almost everything that you guys had. Most part of our trek were epic "fails" but we survived Mt. Fuji, just with a lot of tears, sweat and sore bodies though. Overall, climbing Mt. Fuji is worth it but now, I also just need to die too. 😅😂🤣

    Was so lucky to get to do this on the last day of our visit in Japan, we took the Yoshida trail,(Yellow one) by god it was the most grueling thing I've ever done, but I would do it all over agtain just to see that sunsrise, also in the night we had a beautyfull view over the city where they had fireworks.
    We were hardly prepared, I wore my all stars ( the only pair of shoes I had during the vacation) a jacket and some quarter shorts and a cain.
    We didn't sleep and it took us 9 hours to get up there.
