I climbed Fuji San at 26 years old, and again at 50. The first time was easy. The second time I snapped a ligament in my leg. I made it to the summit, and down again, but it took so long to finish.
In 1976-77, I was stationed at Marine Corps Camp Fuji base. I was there from November 76 to Jan 1978. I can tell you back then the Gotemba trail was straight up, until you came alone side the pressure vent before seeing any switchbacks up further. It took me and another marine 7 1/2 hours to reach the summit one Sunday. The first of 4 climbs that year. The first time up its was a total whiteout. We couldn't see the crater, but just a small shack for souvenirs, food etc. Still a lot of snow and ice were everywhere the last 1000ft. sometime in June, I believe. There was no one else on that trail when we climb Fuji. The second attempt failed due to blizzard conditions hitting our group on the southern Fujinmoiya trail. My 3rd attempt was again with the Gotemba trail with another friend to do a sleep over and see the sunrise. Last was on the Subashiri trail making it to the top in 5 1/2 hours. I was young and in great shape, though the hiking at times was grueling, but I was determined. Reaching the summit that day, the weather finally cooperated to see the crater. That was unbelievable how deep and seeing how wide the crater was back then. I still have my Fuji rock from the top with me all these years!! Japan has a special place in my heart for the people and for Mt. Fuji!
This is one of the best POV travel videos I've ever seen. Well done! If I might be permitted to make one suggestion. The vehicles that are used to move supplies and equipment up and down the mountain are called track trucks. I'll be relocating to Osaka permanently at the end of 2022 and I'm looking forward to trekking in the mountains of Japan. Thank you for making this video!
I fully agree that this is THE BEST video I have seen - VERY comprehensive - describing the start AND end of the journey up and down Mt Fuji. Often people show the ascend but not the descent. KUODS and thank you
Itsuka-san, this is by far one of the best videos I've ever seen from you! Although you noted that more people are climbing Japan's iconic mountain, still from the looks of what I've seen here, Fuji-san is definitely not for the weak-hearted. Hats off to you for your supreme effort to share us this vlog.
My family and I were stationed in Iwakuni, Japan when I was 6 years old. My father was in his early 30's at the time and was a very strong Navy man. He climbed Mt.Fuji either for military training or with friends I forgot, but even he said it was a very hike. He still has the stick with all the stamps on it. Wish I was older at the time so I could've gone with! Beautiful video thanks for sharing.
the climb was a challenge but your effort was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise and a beautiful view from Mount Fuji, also im so glad this video got recommended to me back on February 28, 2023. watched the whole video today coz im free at the moment and watching the whole video from start to finish was worth it! i should try climbing Mount Fuji too when i have the chance to go to japan one day!
A treat for your fans -- thank you! I've only seen Mt. Fuji once from the air, long ago, and I'd always wished to visit up close. I hope your thumb is recovering well.

I am Japanese and have been climbing for over 10 years. This video is best for beginners. I hope many tourists will refer to the video to reduce accidents.
I watched the mountain with awe from afar and pondering am I capable to climb that majestic mountain ? After watching this video the answer is or should be YES !
Wow, you did amazing. You showed such courage to go alone and make the climb by yourself. I admire you! Thanks for sharing such an a wonderful opportunity!
I climbed Mt Fuji in July of this year! Went up the Subashiri trail and stayed at a hut around 7.5 station. One of the most physically taxing things I've ever done. Rained the entire way up but sunny all the way donw. I plan to be the crazy person and climb again next year for that beautiful hiking experience. Watching this video is surreal cause I still can't believe I did it.
I did the climb back in 99. Also took a bus with friends. The weather was way better (clear/comfortable), but very cold at night. We climbed until the next to last station were we stayed at a very small and compact INN about 2-4k yen. ( very little sleep, more to rest and accumulate to the thin air. I had a headache that lasted until we got down). Did the rest of the climb to see the sunrise on top of the MT (about 30-45min climb) then came down a very rocky side. There are 3 different trails to go up and down. (very small rocks and 1ft deep. Had to stop every 10mins to empty my shoes, the others wore boots. Wish I had a cardboard box to slide down.) On our way down there was a Foot Race happing that day. Took us 22hrs from start to finish. The people running were doing it in 3-5hrs and starting 5 miles down a road from Station 5. Great time will NEVER do it again. Also ran into the local JPDF doing there quartly climb exercise training around dusk. Chatted with them on the way up since we were Navy personal stationed in NAS Atsugi. I will say thing have changed A LOT just by looking at your video. Most stuff you shown was not there/avabile when I did the climb 22yrs ago.

My husband and I climbed Mt. Fuji July, 2018 (summer). We did it once and we will never come back. Going down was the scary part of it. The soft pumice rocks something you really hard to be extra careful. My advice to those planning to climb Mt. FUJI, make sure you got the right gears and make sure you don't carry heavy loads or bags. Also, bring plenty of small chocolates or mint candies to eat while climbing. I found this helpful as this processed distract my brain when climbing very stiff path in cold late afternoon. In addition, bring some tablets to take if you feel nauseous.
I climbed Mt Fuji when I was stationed in Japan with the military. You really captured my experience pretty well, right down to the cloud cover and the mist. I do remember coming back down to be pretty miserable though, going up wasn't nearly as painful as going the other way.
When I first climbed Mt. Fuji, I didn't know what climbing shoes were, nor Goretex, nor Texapore and even waterproof clothes! So, I massively got soaked half way up Mt. Fuji and I almost got hypothermia. For some reason though, I bought a tent with me (thought I could pitch up at the summit and take a rest) and I used that to cover my damp clothes from further fog / rain / humidity. My friend saved me as he bought me cup ramen to warm up. Luckily, the weather started to clear and I managed to make it to the summit. I was so cold, tired, and was suffering from altitude sickness...I wanted to puke but I couldn't cause I was so braindead LOL. I made sure not to stop moving, or else I wouldn't have gone even colder... TL;DR: Please wear appropriate gear when doing long climbs! Getting wet half way when it kept getting colder as you climb up is HELL.

All I can say is "KUDOS" young lady for doing this!! It reminds me of when I climbed up Masada back in 1990, up what I call the goat-trail. It was a trail that took you from well below sea-level to above sea-level. It was nasty and very demanding on the body, sorry but I chicken out coming back down so I took the sky-tram. But my husband and a friend ran down it. He was in pain for two days later.

I actually climbed mt Fuji with my mom last year. we climbed overnight without staying anywhere... I heard some people climbed to the top in 6 hours, but we took 12! I actually climbed mt Fuji with my mom last year. we climbed overnight without staying anywhere... I heard some people climbed to the top in 6 hours, but we took 12! That was mostly because I was really sleepy and I also just had covid, so my condition wasn't the best lol..... I really liked this video seeing the climb in someone elses perspective!
