Hi Ruby, thanks for sharing some of your thoughts and practices on this topic! I agree with you on the importance of getting away from this habit of justifying enjoyment/pressuring ourselves to be good at everything we do. I'm a 34 year old dude in the US who has structured much of my adult life around daily learning and trying new things. I started attending beginner ballet classes last year. The first few classes I literally could not do the majority of the movements that were being done - and I haven't improved much since! My lack of skill as a ballet dancer is fairly limited, but the growth potential that the learning process has offered me is limitless. It feels good to be great at something, but sometimes it feels even better to be terrible at something and going for it anyway. All the best!
Thank you, Ruby, for posting as often as you do while being a full time student! It shows your dedication to both and we appreciate it!!! Many other channels only now post every couple months (even though you see them active on other forms of social media) or try to push patreon as a way to “see my latest videos”
Could you possibly do a "reading routine" video one day? I find myself struggling with procrastination when it comes to critical reading and I'm certain a lot of your viewers would be interested in such a video as well😊
Ruby, this video couldn't have come at a better time! I am currently swamped with assignments for college and I haven't had as much time for creative writing as I normally would. I think you are definitely correct about being proactive in setting aside that time each and every day--I really need to do the same!
not into creative writing, never going to be an author, but hey, i’m still here watching this because i love ruby’s videos 😂 it was interesting seeing how someone goes about writing books!
Hello Ruby, I have a certain amount of time to look at UA-cam every day and I use it by watching you, you give me hope and inspiration, always be happy.❤
Thanks you Ruby, for sharing those precious tips (walking a lot...)and telling us the importance of cultivating writing ability. I hop you have a lovely and productive week as well!!
What a thought provoking discussion on perfectionism and doing an activity purely for the sake for enjoying it. Definitely worth a whole video on this topic!!❤
HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUBY❤❤ You're one of my favorite content creator in the world and your vlogs are so nice to watch after a day of school😊 Ive followed the channel since lockdown and im so proud of your journey!!! May God continue tp bless you and hope you have ✨️More than just a productive year✨️
Im an aspring writer too, and this motivated me to grab my laptop and keep going! Im currently doing my GCSE modules so needless to say, everything but school has been neglected! I also struggle with perfectionism with writing, and I beat myself up about poor poetry and storytelling, but your views on writing for the process of writing really changed my mind ❤
The point you made about perfectionism can also apply to art cause those were exactly my insights on my art journey. And walking is such a great thing, I also always try to make time to do it everyday.
Right now I am reading Agatha Christie. I have grown a huge interest in british literature after watching your vlogs. Those books remind me of you and you remind me of the necessity of reading. I like your vlogs a lot.
These videos take me back to my college days, a very long time ago. I did not take full advantage of them, unfortunately. I do not know what plans Ruby has but she would make a great teacher. Oxford can be very proud of her.
That was a delight to watch and so inspiring, thank you. And although I'm a bit late but: Wishing you all the best, lots of love and laughter and calm times for your birthday, Ruby. Take care. 💜
I am a mother of a book obsessed baby. I have been dreaming of writing a children's book, everyday I read all sorts of baby books, and I always think "why can't I sit and write one?" I have been frozen by my perfectionism. This video has inspired me to just sit and write again(I have lost this hobby after becoming a mum). Maybe it will be geared towards children, maybe not, but I am just going to create. Thank you for your content.
Hi Ruby, I've been watching your videos for the longest time and absolutely loved them! I'm currently doing my GCSEs and so these videos have now become such a source of comfort during these stressful times 💕 xx
Oh, thank you so much for this lovely video, Ruby! 🌹✨Yes, perfectionism often threatens to stifle my enjoyment of writing and drawing. I used to love drawing and painting before I went to school, and my sister and I used to draw while my mum read books to us. Then, at school, we were told that only the ability to draw in perspective and realistically was valuable. I think I developed a fear of making mistakes and of not being talented. I imagine it would be fun and liberating to let go and just jam down ideas and scenes in a first draft, without worrying about how beautifully they are phrased. You know, sometimes I'm afraid my inner critic makes me worry more about my ability to write perfect sentences than the story itself; and I want to change that. (Sorry for my limited English.)
I've been watching your channel for ages and the thought has just now occurred to me that in a way, I am a writer too, even if my writing is very different from what you usually talk about when you refer to writing. I am a copywriter, which means I write texts for advertisements, websites and blogs. This kind of writing comes with a whole other set of challenges, as it's completely tailored to the client/potential reader/buyer. It's always a fine balance between creativity and what you think is marketable.
Allocating that time for writting is brilliant as, eventually, your mind will begin to expect the time and begin preparing itself for creative writing. I have seen this phenomena work with regards to scheduled meditation, sleep, studying, and exercise.
Loved this video (as always)!! I was wondering if you would consider making a video talking about your course/dissertation? I know it’s English literature at Oxford but what do you actually study? And what is your dissertation about? I would love to know more 👀💖
Useful insights, thank you Ruby. I am currently trying to writie in a very disciplined manner to meet word counts (as I'm sure many people are too)fine tuning my end of module essay and am so looking forward to being finished to write freely, when and what I want! I really enjoyed reading this poem today, "The British Poem" by Benjamin Zephaniah which I recommend to anybody who reads this!
I really love this video. And I really love the background music. It sounds so serene and healing. Thank you so much for this lovely clip :))) Have a great day!
Nice vlog Ruby, I love it. I waish you could always share with us these writing vlogs because I'm writing my thesis, so this is so motivating. Thank you and Love you dear. Have a productive day too.
Hola Rubi, gracias por tus cosejos sobre la escritura, me parece muy alentador, sobretodo para aquellos que somos perfeccionistas de alguna forma. Que tengas un bonito dia! 🌈
Neil Gaiman is such a popular reference in my screenwriting class. And rightly so! Glad to hear you are inspired by his teachings😊 Also you met THE Phillip Pullman?😭how cool!!!
One of my habits for 2024 is to spend at least 10 minutes every day on writing projects. I don't do it every single day, so it's more of an invitation, but the times I do it are enough to kind of keep me in the loop, in the writing mindset and in touch with my writing projects. As a result I find that even when occupied with other things I get ideas for my projects, or find myself writing micro-poems or dialogues that I might integrate to a project later. I think daily or close-to-daily contact with writing can be so beneficial, even if it's just a little amount of time or work or energy, just to be in touch with the writer in us, to not let them be forgotten.
Hello Ruby! You popped into my feed on Monday, and I’ve been watching all your videos. You are truly inspiring for us writers! I have a question. Writers usually have a ton of books. When I first started school, I had a bookcase full. 15-years later I have about 20 boxes I move around with me. My question for you is: How many books do you have? How many to you keep after you read? Do you buy books all the time? Thank you once again for your lovely vlogs. You’re helping more people than you know! Best, Tzipi
What is your dissertation about and what are you going to do with your degree after graduation? What field are you looking for a job in? Have you applied for any yet?
Love it! I also love walking. I'm grateful I live in the woods. I just got gifted a gorgeous book that made me think of you! I wondered if you have it, Floriography the illustrated guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers by Jessica Roux. It's SO pretty! I'm going to use it in my Regency book I'm writing. :)
Is high school teacher and the majority of my lessons are pre planned because I teach the exact same course year after year. This means I’m mostly free during my planning periods, which I can then use for “honing my professional skills” aka secretly writing my novels. JRR Tolkien wrote most of lord of the rings on the backs of his students essays so I feel I’m in good company!
Hi Ruby, do you (or anyone!) have any tips for education and learning as a neurodivergent person? I essentially left mainstream education just before covid as a result of my mental health and the kind of toxicity of the system I was trapped in. I’ve attempted so many times to get back into education as I do genuinely adore learning, I’ve taught myself in quite an eclectic mix of topics from poetry and philosophical writing to physics and the beautiful illusion we call time. I’ve just never found a way to make accommodations for myself and it can be rather lonely not being able to expand my thoughts as being autistic I don’t really have friends or anyone to bounce ideas around with and I feel like that’s such a key part of learning.
Hey Ruby and anyone, visiting Oxford this week, do you have tips for free/budget-friendly things to do? Could be anything but for literature/art/community-created spaces lover especially. Writing spots also appreciated :) lovely video as always!!
Have you ever felt paralised because of perfeccionism? I'd love to see you talk about that. When I watch your videos it's like you have the words to express something I've thought about, but didn't know how to say it 😅 you seem so productive 🥺 how do you stay so calm and find purpose in each day that you do what you have to do?
How do you manage your creative writing with your dissertation? Is it difficult to research and plan to a deadline when you want to work on your hobby? Asking for a friend, I'm about to do an undergrad diss and I know it's way harder at Masters level!! :((
I love that quote, I forget who said it: "If you can imagine not writing, you're not supposed to do it. Because it is impossibly difficult to write for a goal and not because you love the process.
As a child, my son struggled with perfectionism--I couldn't convince him to simply enjoy the process! Btw, I just realized you're not using your Kanken!?!🎒🧡
Can anyone share how to draft a plot for writing? I feel I can never set myself on a thing because when I plan the longterm story, i feel pressured and overwhelmed by the fact that anything is possible
i am not good at writing, but my work requires me to report about the whole company‘s work in paper regularly. Writing feels like exposing part of myself to other people and that really scares me. i think i should try your method to write something every morning.

"Creating without expectation" love that
Hi Ruby. I’ve had 35 novels published and still learned from your insights. Thank you for a thought provoking vlog about your process.
Omg! Can you share your tips? Even about ideas?
which books did you publish?
What books?
@@Aaaavvvvvvvva I wanna know too
Is there a link to buy or download to listen to any of your work?
"Making time for boredom" !!!!! so important, and so underrated!
Please do a journaling video at some point if you’d like to - I’d love to watch that, love all your videos!
As someone also at Oxford who loves writing, seeing you make time for it around workload has inspired me to try harder to make time for it! Thank you

I ought to send my boyfriend on that course you suggested. I think parenthood reset my perfectionism to a ‘just get it done’ mentality.

Hi Ruby - what do you think about the student protests happening for Palestine in Oxford?
Would you like to do a PhD one day?
Why does everything have an ad
It’s a job and she needs to be paid! Adverts help support Ruby to make content which we then in turn enjoy.
Bcz you can't create content without money it takes time and a lot of energy to do it even if it looks very easy money but it's actually hard 😭
