Break Your Phone Addiction by Writing Fiction

- Writing fiction can break your phone addiction. Our phones target weaknesses in the dopamine system, stealing our attention from what is meaningful. Writing fiction exercises this system in a different way, opening the door to freedom.

ABOUT THE CHANNEL
Want to write fiction on the side of your job but worry about having the time, energy or ideas? Have a creative side you feel is under-used, or stifled by routine?
This channel helps you with:
1) Sources of Inspiration - to get your writing started
2) Ways of Forming a Habit - so writing becomes a regular practice
The goal is to make creativity not just a passing moment, but an integral part of our lives. In the process, we can expand our curiosity for the world and our sense of connection to ourselves and other people.
I'm Greg - I've been writing fiction for six years on the side of my job, first in law and then in government. Recently, I took a career break and moved to Buenos Aires to make this my focus. Over time, I've picked up lessons that have helped me enormously and I would love to share them with you. I will be posting a new video every weekend. I hope you enjoy!

I've dropped everything else quite easily, twitter, Instagram, etc. But have found it damn near impossible to drop UA-cam!
Same same
In that case... I will have to apply to this site as well. It's pains to me that I might not able to watch tutorial videos on my phone. But... That's a price I have to pay.
I gotta post my art on insta and so it's difficult for me to leave it entirely
Same here!
The fact that it can't be removed from most androids increases this issue
its funny, normally i struggle with focusing on writing anything, but when I give it a few minutes of my time. My mind just runs with possibilities. this was a good reminder for me.
i played hand drums and guitar with a friend for hours today. great fun. and we are sober. any damn hobby is better than always consuming
Me, who uses my phone to write (type?) the stories I come up with: I see this as an absolute loss.
Then use paper
Theres a diffrence between using your phone and having to use your phone. Also HOW you use it. Optimally ofc you should use sth else, but writing on your phone is better than nothing.
The same 😄
me, who writes on my ipad:
Ever heard of pen and paper? Computers?
I've done this, and then my family complains why I'm "always" writing when before they would complain I was "always" on the phone even if I wasn't
You have to give time to your family. Be it only an hour or two. Or else they'll complain about everything you do.
@@MohammedNayeem327 Not necessarily. Some families are just horrible and will never be happy. Case in point: one time, for multiple weeks, me and my brother spent about an hour every evening playing a video game with my Dad: we all liked the game, we all talked and joked and had a good time every night.
Then, one day after we had played video games with him like we regularly did, my Dad complained that we never spent time with him! Some people are simply entitled and some of those people have children, and having children does not make the person less entitled. Sad, but true.
@@MohammedNayeem327 Also, in what world is 'you don't give me what I want, therefore I am allowed to criticize EVERYTHING you do' a fair and equal trade-off?
Interesting how you use writing to become more mindful and focused, almost like a form of meditation/yoga
Hey Norbert, yes, it definitely feels similar. Quite a bit of distraction at the start you have to watch and let go, and then slowly you can focus more deeply on just the one thing in front of you
the title alone is simply good advice
I’m a writer with a phone addiction. I think I really needed to see this video.. thank you
It actually helped me a lot, I’m spending more time writing and in nature in order to write a fantasy series and so far it’s working. Right now I’m in my editing phase.
In recent months/years I have found myself being less and less creative. It's gotten to the point where I am really conscious of it. I think you have highlighted the exact problem. I don't give myself time to let my mind wander, just think, and make connections. I think a big part of creativity is just mashing things together and making interesting connections. I constantly bombard myself with content/input. I'm definitely going to make an effort to incorporate down time.
I completely agree on the down time. I don't think it's you. As you say, it's more a question of routine and having 'unforced' time where you're not in a short-term, outcomes-based mindset.
Applies to non-fiction as well. For that matter, any creative activity. The Mona Lisa was painted in a similar manner. Great video. Thanks.
Please make that other video about dopamine driven writing!! Sounds fascinating!
I concur.
I am quite interested in understanding the dopamine system to write high quality of fiction. I have had so many failed attempts on writing fiction that I am almost terrified at the thought of it. Thank you Greg. Love from India.
thanks for sharing. Watched this partly out of distraction but glad I did. Putting the phone away for the night now (not going to go write anything, but I might read a little). :)
Haha thanks Tim - that seems like a good start!
Good thoughts. Thanks for posting.
Im in high school at the moment and also have been working on a huge writing project for about 5 years now. This is a great thing to keep in mind and I hope the algorithm picks this video up 👍
hi, can i ask you about that project? i'm curious.
@@vinzaux sure, it’s a sci-fi/fantasy story(essentially, the storyline is pretty much just fantasy, but the magic has a scientific explanation), it follows several groups of characters on different planets, and the storyline is connected throughout, although not many of the groups actually interact with others. The antagonists are the characters that are mainly reoccurring.
Unfortunately the plot is a bit too complex to explain in a comment, as it spans multiple planets and also a couple generations, but I hope you found this answer satisfying
@@daydariftwalker indeed, i find your answer super satisfying. your project seems really complex in it's way to have (or to not have) a plot, i love it. thank you for your existence and for being up to write something like that.
I really like your message here overall, but I need to put out there that the Stanford marshmallow test's conclusions were greatly simplified and it's become kind of a productivity myth. Follow up studies haven't been able to reproduce as clear of a correlation and have also found significant cultural and parental influences in the kids' waiting times. E.g. it depends on what the treat is, cultural expectations around patience for that thing, and also whether the kids have learned to distrust adults' promises or not (all the kids in one test waited when they were shown the second promised marshmallow beforehand as a guarantee that it was real). I like your point even without it, I just think it happens too often that we oversimplify ourselves as humans when things are never that straightforward in reality. Have a good one!
Thanks Roxanne! Appreciate the context
fantastic video Greg! I am determined now to write for the two fiction books I am currently working on, as well as short stories, and maybe even flash-fiction instead of checking my phone compulsively (which I do a LOT unfortunately). Thinking of giving an hour a day of dedicated writing time free from devices. I even have a good ole fashioned physical dictionary and a thesaurus for when I need to think of new words and refresh myself as to what an exact definition of a word I already know. Thank you for sparking this inspiration of mine :)
I needed this, I have 2 books that I've stopped writing at +32000 words for both
I try to set aside some time in the day to be creative, but my work schedule is so demanding it makes it impossible. I just try to do what i can.
I’m drafting my first novel right now. I’ll try the 90 minute sessions! I’m hopelessly addicted to technology or so it seems. Thanks for the video!
That book changed my life, and this video is a great tribute to it and more!
We appreciate your advice. Keep working hard as always.
Well yeah, you can always replace an addiction with a more destructive one.
This is a super insightful video. Thanks for sharing. As a fellow creative I've been using creative projects to help me break free of the addiction to my devices.
I heard theat epic fantasy is dying...it's my dream to become an epic fantasy writer, and now I really feel horrible
Hi man, I'm an aspiring graphic novelist who is hoping to do traditional art in a digital world. You want to know why? Because traditional art is still special and relevant to me, and by extension, to anyone. If that matters, then epic fantasy matters as well. Don't give up man. I don't know what your story is, but you shouldn't always let what others say define what you. Whatever it is, I bet it's awesome.
It's probably dying because not as many people are WRITING it, not because not as many people would read it? Idk. I think there's enough attention to go around
I do my proof reading on my phone. If you're going to stare at a screen, it should at least be something worthwhile.
Thank you so much for your advice, this is honestly one of the best UA-cam videos I've seen in a awhile.
Glad it was helpful!
That is an amazing idea!
I got depressed about the distopian subject matter as it can barely be helped as it was too close to real life... if you're not like me and able to write a feel better about our crazy lives then go for it, otherwise I'd suggest writing about something else way lighter instead... don't be like me xD
Thank you ❤ this is inspirational and helpful 💜
*Me writing on my phone*
needed this just today! Came at the right moment :) thank you, keep sharing
Really cool video, Greg!
I’m gonna try this and just write something even if it sounds like a third grader wrote it
Thank you Greg!
You’re welcome!
I completely agree
I mindfully listen to selected videos in the evening (I call is "listening to a story") while tasks like cooking and cleaning on my days off. I'm very interested in fiction writing so chose this one. Thanks for making this short video, the content is high quality, the message is insightful and it really helps me.
I’m really glad, thank you
I discovered your channel through this video. Happy Writing! 😎📚👍
I was broke and sold mine 7 months ago!! I don't feel particularly nostalgiic about it. I need something to stay in contact with my family.. I kinda miss the camera a little and some of the music and podcasts.. I don't know if I'd get a "smart"-phone again.
hell yeah
Nice rhyme!
Commenting to help this video get more traction. I'm going to try this. But on my phone. I should get a satchel for notebooks and such
I’m eager to hear your ideas on hacking the dopamine system to write greater.
I’ve been in a big writers block when I transitioned to a young adult and now I still write beautifully but it’s glimpses, here and there, it’s like I’ve fractured the writer in me by not letting her out in so long.
OH MY GOD STOP BREATHING INTO THE MICROPHONE
Some of the best ideas I get come when I'm going for a walk or run. I've stopped using my headphones to listen to podcasts and music and instead just think as I go -- or at least try -- it doesn't always work haha
Ha sounds familiar here too
Enjoyed the content of this so much and will definitely try applying over the next few weeks, thanks! 🔥 Just had to watch at 2x speed because the talking is very slow 😅
Whats the deal with the Mount Rushmore picture appearing sometimes?
Thank you bro you probably ain’t gonna see this but thank you
I’ve seen it ha - you’re welcome
Interesting, I would like to hear your ideas on flipping the subject - understanding the dopamine system!
Nice, Oscar! Yeah I have the idea in draft in my mind, so watch this space
I already have both
Dopamine nation.
I’ve been making VRChat avatars
Nice. Avatars for you or others?
My problem is I’m dyslexic and adhd as hell I love love books but have to use audiobooks…which are on my phone 😭
When he says “phone” in the video, I think he mostly means social media and UA-cam and the like. I don’t think he’s telling you to abandon your phone
That thumbnail 😭😭😭
Except I write on my phone 🤣🤣🤣
cutie patootie
nice video, thanks
