Yeah who cares if your video sounds like you're Ant Man who fell into an empty soup can? You need that 18" 20 MP selfie to count your zitty pores and nose hairs! 😒
Yes! Self-absorbed teenagers will absolutely hate this phone. The world needs more selfies and food pictures. We need more 18" 20 MP photos to count zitty pores and nose hairs. Come on LG!
I don't take many selfies but i do care about taking a selfie. anyway, that's the only reason why i didn't buy g6 or v30 but i want to as i'm not interested in op5t, honor v10 looks nice but lack of water resistance is a turn down for me. i guess, i will have to compromise, one way or another...
As a brand new V30 owner I'm so glad to see this. I've been going to town with the camera. I do wish however that the front facing camera was a bit better. It's kind of odd that it's the only real weakness in the the whole thing
Tbh LG one used to have the best front fancing cam.... G4... The normal 8mp is beast even better than iphone and samsung s8 IMO the detail it capture is beautiful i have g4 compare it to s7 and s8 and now v20 how am i disappointed when i bought v20.... So sad but the back camera is good
Laurensius Satya totally agree with you, I don't know why lg cheap out where they have a chance to have the best phone ever. -Replacing the front cam in lg v30 with lg g4. -ufs 2.1 instead of ufs 2.0. - 6 instead of 4 gb ram. -This one is for me bit the IR.
As a G6 owner, I was kind of bummed about the V30 selfie shooter quality, but honestly it's really not that big a deal in actual use. The worse that'll happen if your friends making fun of you for your "Android quality camera"
Pete379 I feel like the G5 has a better camera somehow. I compared it and the G5 still takes such amazing pictures and the 8 megapixel front camera seems better than the G6 and V30. The downgrade in the G6 and V30 is so odd.
When I was 9, my dad gave me a disposable camera to take a picture of him with. He wanted the picture to be of him running, and I got ready for to take the shot. He ran right past me, but he never stopped running and he deserted me at the park. I hate cameras, and everything they represent; this phone included
The importance of a good auto mode and a good selfie camera can't be compromised, especially ehen you sheel out such a large amount. Yes the manual controls are good but what about times when I have to click a photo instantly and have no time to wait. Disappointed with these 2 things, otherwise I feel LG did a great job. Also I feel the stabilisation for 4K videos could be improved. What do you think?
The auto mode is still good. People act like because it's not a Pixel, that when they hit the shutter it'll just poop out a hazy purple distortion shot or something. Just because one phone has a faster and more colorful auto mode, doesn't mean that this phone is unusuable. We need to stop pretneding like one phone can be the best at everything. I don't talk about third party apps in these reviews, but you COULD load the Pixel APK on a V30 and have the best of both worlds you know...
JuanBagnell Yes I agree to what you say, point noted. But when this phone releases in India it's not gonna be less than 50k ₹, in that case why should one compromise with the selfie camera? That doesn't make sense. If this is "the phone for content creation" then how can this front be compromised and that too completely. Although am still looking forward to this phone, the uncertainty of it's release date (India) is making it tough to wait. You think it's worth or should I go for some other phone?
I have the v20 and I can see that the jello effect when recording video is still there. Looks like improvement there is not that significant. That was the deal breaker that prevents me from using the v20 when shooting on the go. It needs a good tripod which means you need to bring out an extra equipment.
"The rear is stinking good !" - I might have phrased that differently, but I like the production values in this video and you've clearly put a lot of effort into it. I've got a V30+ on its way (old tech = *cheap* if obsolete 'flagship') for its audio and streaming capability, even if I'm extremely skeptical re the value of DSD and MQA from anything, especially a phone. Thanks for the video.
I love how having more accurate colors is seen as a bad thing to some since they're so used to artificially saturated colors, great review as always though
I was waiting for the big surprise that you used the v30 mic to record the whole voice over like you did with the v20 last year. Oh well, amazing work on the video Juan!
Nice review... it's always nice when someone that has a clue takes a critical look at a camera. Oh, by the way... watch out for the merc at 7:48 nearly got keelhauled by the dude in the red car
I’ve been waiting for this since IFA happened!. It goes without saying, great review, once again proving that there is no one size fits all, each implementation has their pros and cons and the user has the final word in what they appreciate more. That said, ready for the “but is it better than” questions?
When the Lumia series came to an end, I thought I would never see a phone that has as much dedication to its camera as it does to every other aspects of the phone. Good to see that LG stepped up to the plate and does things not only better, but also differently to the competition.
FYI: The sensor size didn't "shrink". It simply has fewer MP on the same size sensor as the V20, which means that each photocell (pixel) is actually larger, thus providing less digital noise at higher ISOs than before. ;)
JuanBagnell. The real reason I didn't get the Note 8 is because supposedly it still using the same camera sensor from the S7 just with sofware enhancements for the main 12 MP 📷. And I was really looking forward on the V30 .. Would of loved a detail photo comparison between the 2 on auto mode with HDR on. I will have to do a little more research
I just got mine last Saturday and my girl got the note 8 and my camera point and shot is BETTER then hers. We put both phones on full brightens then did a point and shoot, at first glance the note 8 did look better (brighter) but the v30 had a more realistic and detailed look. We then took another picture of the same image (my kitten sleeping) and again and my v30 was the better picture. However in fairness and being 100% honest I HATED the front facing camera both in selfies (which i normally dont take) and with video. My gf and I looked at my v10 pics & video and thought the v10 was way better. I was going to return the phone til she told me to try it outside in natural light and then it was a million times better.
My V30 will arrive tomorrow. I am typing this on my V20. I'm glad there are improvements but I am really upset that the selfie camera is still lackluster. I'll be okay if it's the same as the V20, but if it's worse LG better fix it.
A nice idea for a review, but why no good dynamic range test? The photos you took felt like you went to minimal effort to find challenging places and situations. The tiny sensor on this, particulary the wide angle, makes me think my Nexus 5x with HDR+ will still perform better in challenging light (e.g. sunsets) and landscapes where dynamic range is essential.
For few years back I am still waiting LG to come up with a superb phone camera and till now even after this video review I don't think I will put my hand on LG phone yet. I am using Samsung Galaxy Note for the past years and I am very happy with the result. I take lot of photos and HD videos with Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and 8 and I believe Samsung is still the leader in phone cameras. As a passionate photographer I wish to see Sony, LG or Samsung phone cameras equipped with 30MP or more
so the mics sound great here but what about when the phone gets wet, how long before it can return to the same quality, if ever? also congrats on the newegg deal
Is it really that bad? Not that I use it much but still worth using for family events. Can't decide on this or pixel 2. But not sure I can deal with no headphone jack
Your review is fabulous. Really well structured and presented. I've ordered my V30+ having been running a V20 and I am drawn very much to the imaging and audio this magnificent phone has to offer. Selfies? Who cares. F1.6 OMG. Thank you Juan. Superb. Yes, I have subscribed.
Really can't understand why'd someone buy an LG V30+ in 2019? I am an LG V30+ user and I'd suggest you to go for some other phone. Redmi K20 pro might be a good choice.
The V30 seems like a mighty fine upgrade from my G4 with manual video controls. But i'm holding off another year (or more), maybe for the V40? Non-removable battery sucks, but i feel we're close to batteries that don't lose their capacity, as some researchers from Taiwan are closing in on that dream.
I have the G4, too! Do you recommend switching to the G6, or the V30? I'm still not sure about which should I choose :( For me the most important thing is the camera. Which can overall take better pictures? I've read that G6's sharpening and dynamic range is better
Thank you for a well done review of what appears to be a great phone. I’m hoping Sony is watching and will tweak their software a bit. I’m a big fan of little phones and this one’s a monster compared to my current iPhone SE and the Xperia XZ1 Compact.
thanks for the review. your comment on that zoom rocker causing missed shots is concerning and will frustrate me too! hmmm.. coming from G4 wondering if it has back button option to fire shots... will miss that if not..
Just a reminder for those that want to use auto mode, at least at times, the pixel camera port with HDR+ should work with the V30. It should offer better results for auto mode photography.
btw a few of people tell me if the v30 video is only can record in 15 minutes, thats true? i really want to buy this phone but i've still wait for this device in indonesia's erafone
as always, Juan is pretty spot on! im planning to upgrade from my Nexus6P, should i wait untill the price drops, or should i get the LGG6 if it has similar camera performance?
@juan how do you stack v30 vs the G6? The camera sensors are smaller than the g6 and despide better f, I am curious if there acrually is a pozitive difference.
nope its not just you idk why but the quality is freaking horrible!! I took a snap of my kitten in the sink sleep then one not on snap and I couldn't believe how night and day the difference was. I love my v30 but those who love snapchat tbh stay away from the v30, you'll hate your pictures.
The classical music song playing loud is a nice inclusion! I'd like to know how the V20 stacks up to the V30, since I've seen some concert videos shot with the v20 that distorted quite a bit (but I can't know if they used manual audio). I've also read the U11 is, unbelievably, better than the V20 for recording loud audio. Would you say this is true and, if it is, if this is still the case with the V30?
Thanks man for great review waiting for this, good camera samples, you are right front camera had not been upgraded as all the flagship smartphones have at least 8Mp of selfie camera...I think LG made the mistake this year also by not upgrading it's selfie camera...
glad to see LG giving their everything in this phone. design, display, camera, performance , everything in point the only thing which holds me off for this phone is the selfie shooter( I mean come on LG, we like taking selfies as well)
Thanks for this one Juan! I feel that LG is not taking advantage of this great hardware... I installed ported Google camera to my LG V20 and it is WAY BETTER (especially in low light conditions). Less noise, more details, better dynamic range. I'd love to see that pixel camera app results on V30...
now that I think about it. I would like to have lg v30. I have lg v20 and we are using t mobile's two year contract. My lg v20 is having a loads of problems. The phone won't vibrate with tap or notification, the performance that used to outstand is now getting a bit slow, and even experiencing lags! But I remember there is a google pixel now but I can't decide which one of the two phones should I get if I am still in this contract. Do you guys have any suggestions?
Overall such an excellent phone from LG (though the quality control issues continues, such as poor display quality)! Sadly nobody's going to buy this except for some smartphone enthusiasts and vloggers because they don't advertise their phones to general consumers :(
XtraDreamLantern17 also LG never sold the V10 or V20 to EUROPE and the V30 may not be released till later in November. If they do not care for us then it works both ways, so in EUROPE there is no loyalty for this phone and it will sell accordingly. In any case for 90% users most camera phones do a great job so this is really for niche users. The whole package is more important and LG phones have not been great for me and the G5 was awful and the G6 was a joke (2016 spec on flagship phone); those two sold badly and deservedly so. Do not expect the V30 to do well as LG does not care, probably due to years of losses so lack of investment, the screen issues highlights this, and at £800 it is way too expensive.
Hi Juan, thank you once again for another very cool, informative and extremely useful review. You Pocketnow guys are really some of my first go-to people when it comes to what smartphones can do. What about doing a review on the V30's sound recording abilities, please? Especially compared to recording sound using microphones attached to smartphones if you film especially video content for professional or semi-professional audiovisual content creation purposes? Looking forward! Keep up the good work
😆😆 Jip since it seems they are also putting in enough "controls" to be used when recording sound. Would be great if it's good and userfriendly enough to allow one leave atleast some external mics home on a shoot. Looking forward. Thank you once again for the insightful reviews and pieces.
Does anyone else notice quite a bit of artifacting with normal blue skies? I find the daylight videos amazing except with regards to blue skies having alot of artifacting.
I've seen a few reviews saying the P-OLED screen has color inconsistencies, and banding that is most noticeable in low light and on white backgrounds. Any truth to this?
There is a lot of variance in LG OLED's atm. I'm doing pretty good. No significant banding, but the lighting is brighter on the top and bottom than in the middle. That said, LOTS of OLEDs have different kinds of inconsistencies. My Note for example is brighter in the bottom left corner than at the top of the screen, has a hard half inch band through the top third, and is a REALLY ruddy red tone. My V30 is actually more color accurate. Unfortunately for LG this year, it's more likely you might get a "bad" one.
Juan i have the G6 and i am going to buy the V30 for sure, but please help understand why it still has 4:3 photos when using 16MP. I really hate 4:3 specially that nowadays there is no screen anywhere with 4:3 ratio. Its dumb.
Also from a layman's perspective, if a lens is a circle, what rectangular shape would best maximize the most surface area of the quality part of a lens? You don't want a sensor out at the very edges of a lens, where it's more prone to distorting.
I loved the G4 camera at the time and didnt see distortions. Now i understand the physics of it Juan but its awkward looking at a 18:9 aspect ratio screen and always having to zoom in to see the details in the photo. I would like a 16:9 pic for sure.

I cannot put into words how freaking excited I am to finally watch this!!!

true very true.
i want that wide angle on the front crop for normal view.
it would instantly be the best selfie cam.
Damn smh. Why LG
Still using V30,V40 and V50 in 2023,they are all good 😊
YEEEEEES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR A LONG TIME! MEGAPICKLE ARMY REUNITE!
This LG V30 is such a beautifully produced flagship smartphone.
LG really stepped up their game this year. Nice to have a more competitive option from them.
So true JuanBagnell
For the price this is a step up for LG
This phone is also gorgeous
As a G6 owner, I was kind of bummed about the V30 selfie shooter quality, but honestly it's really not that big a deal in actual use. The worse that'll happen if your friends making fun of you for your "Android quality camera"

Pete379 G6 is a nice jump from the G5

I'll check out the G6 & V30 this weekend. Thanks for the reply back
Update your friends
Pete379 I feel like the G5 has a better camera somehow. I compared it and the G5 still takes such amazing pictures and the 8 megapixel front camera seems better than the G6 and V30. The downgrade in the G6 and V30 is so odd.

Love Your Real Audio & Real Camera Reviews...Keep'em Coming!....
Thanks for your review! I just got this phone from a friend and had no idea it was such a powerful video camera!
Your camera reviews are the best Juan. This was a long time coming, but didn't disappoint.

Did the V30 at least get rid of the horrible over-sharpening on the G6
When the Lumia series came to an end, I thought I would never see a phone that has as much dedication to its camera as it does to every other aspects of the phone. Good to see that LG stepped up to the plate and does things not only better, but also differently to the competition.
It really is the best replacement for that Windows Phone feel on the camera app.
Your camera reviews are the only ones worth watching. Especially for people like me, who consider the camera on a device to be very important.
Hey can you compare v30 and note 8 on audio end video recordings??
FYI: The sensor size didn't "shrink". It simply has fewer MP on the same size sensor as the V20, which means that each photocell (pixel) is actually larger, thus providing less digital noise at higher ISOs than before.
;)
Robert LeBlanc It’s smaller.
The V20 was 1/2.8”. The V30 is 1/3”.
The pixel size is roughly the same
So will the V30 have better details on my pictures compared to the Note 8??
francob911 it's all pros and cons. I personally like the look of the V30 lens, but the galaxies are easier to use at night.
francob911 lol no the v30 is garbage don't be fooled.
JuanBagnell. The real reason I didn't get the Note 8 is because supposedly it still using the same camera sensor from the S7 just with sofware enhancements for the main 12 MP 📷. Thanh Nguyen LOL yup
Use the rear wide angle camera for selfies.
LG has never been serious with the selfie camera, how sad is that :(
Try manual mode on front and turnoff some of the filters . it helps.

Nope. Been blending in V30 footage most recently.
3:48 I'm all on LG's side but how is the subject better isolated from the background, it blurred most of Hulk's edges while the iphone kept him sharp.
thanks for the review. your comment on that zoom rocker causing missed shots is concerning and will frustrate me too! hmmm.. coming from G4 wondering if it has back button option to fire shots... will miss that if not..

good honest review.
strengths and weaknesses
thanks
Tigerex966 you're very welcome 🙂
@juan how do you stack v30 vs the G6? The camera sensors are smaller than the g6 and despide better f, I am curious if there acrually is a pozitive difference.
Similar, but the V30 has a better lens. If you had the G6, I don't know it would be a radical enough upgrade just for the camera.
JuanBagnell apprecitate the feedback. Thanks!
thanks for putting the conclusion at the beginning for us folks who work all day or have lives and don't have time to spend hours on UA-cam
Eric V trying to shake things up a bit.
I am wondering why LG didn't improve the front camera? !!!
Is it just me or is the snapchat quality extra poor on the v30?
nope its not just you idk why but the quality is freaking horrible!! I took a snap of my kitten in the sink sleep then one not on snap and I couldn't believe how night and day the difference was. I love my v30 but those who love snapchat tbh stay away from the v30, you'll hate your pictures.
Snapchat quality always suck in android systems.. not just your lg, mine too.. htc u11
Why did they take away the ability to change mic directionality?
Waited for this. :) Also cant wait for the Pixel 2 real camera review. ^^ I know it will take a while. As always nice video.
Audio recording sounds crisp 👌
I love the audio on this phone. LOVE.
Any idea when we will get to see the review for mate 10 pro??
By the way.. Thanks for the indepth review as always.
Are you still working for pocketnow?
Thanks man for great review waiting for this, good camera samples, you are right front camera had not been upgraded as all the flagship smartphones have at least 8Mp of selfie camera...I think LG made the mistake this year also by not upgrading it's selfie camera...
Wilson Lobo that is a bummer, but you can tell they had a focus, and we're trying to hit a specific price point. If they had to coast on anything...
JuanBagnell, no one understands better than you...Thanks again for your reply...Take care man,Have a nice day...
I could tell by your voice your excitement about this phone
S B I was trying to stay objective, but...
🙂
glad to see LG giving their everything in this phone. design, display, camera, performance , everything in point
the only thing which holds me off for this phone is the selfie shooter( I mean come on LG, we like taking selfies as well)
5:25 which is the best phone to shoot in low light in your opinion?-
Thanks for this one Juan!
Great review as usual. To bad the auto mode for point and shoot is not better. How about the Honor 9 review, anytime soon? Cheers.
Honor 8x vs lg v30
Which one is better in terms of camera??
Can you do a comparison between this and Sony Xperia XZ Premium?
This was a great video. I hope you do another for the LG V40.
did the LG V30 korean version works fine ?
Works for me here in europe.
I am super happy that LG invested in better glass this time around. I get enough intense lens flares in Star Trek these days. lol
fatproduce Ha!
Great review! I'd love to see some kind of comparison to the pixel 2 camera.
Waiting for Pixel 2 Camera review
Reza coming soon ☺️
Reza why? does v30 make you dissatisfy?
i like the summary you make for those impatient audience
haha
How about the cine mode? is good?
it's great.
Wow. Look at that focus speed. 😯
Nnamdi Jideani not bad right.
What happened to the outros?
Now they need to improve front camera, put IR Blaster back, put dual speakers.
Keep up the good work
Sounds like a good idea to me! Get it?
"SOUNDS"?
It's a pun.
Its true. Problem from what i'm seeing is major. Got korean v30 and have no problems even in low brightness.
JuanBagnell So it's basically luck of the draw then. Thanks very much for the response. It's the one thing that has me hesitant about getting one.
I was so hyped for this video!!
Seeing all the camera examples in this video is awesome, but still I feel imo the note 8 gets better detail in every lighting range.
Juan i have the G6 and i am going to buy the V30 for sure, but please help understand why it still has 4:3 photos when using 16MP. I really hate 4:3 specially that nowadays there is no screen anywhere with 4:3 ratio. Its dumb.
Because the camera matrix is 4:3 (in every phone) ? You can choose 16:9 or other ratios but then it'll just crop the image.
Could anyone shed some light on the screen issues?
pls do a camera review on xperia Xz1
