Very lovely bird house Larry! I just started putting out bird houses & feeders and I just love watching the birds discover them.

Thanks. I love putting out something new and seeing how long it takes them to discover it. Thanks for watching and sharing.

Did your birdhouse break? How bad was it damaged? The finished work looked good. Did any birds use the house?

    • @LSatch

The house is still in the same location without any occupants yet. Thanks for asking and watching.

In my area Red Breasted Nut Hatches will fit into a 1 and 1/8 round hole . In my area of Victoria BC a round hole size larger than 1 and 1/8 will not keep out invasive English house sparrows . Please do not let Invasive English house sparrows use your nest box , they kill good birds . I have squirrels in my area so i never mount a nest box on a tree . I mount in a location that rats and squirrels cannot get at.

Thanks for watching and sharing. Great advice. This box is in a place where I see it several times a day. We have very few house sparrows. We have plenty of squirrels but have not shown any interest in this house yet.

I found my nuthatches love walnuts and will dive bomb my head when I come outside...they will also eat out of my hands. I have chickadees that eat out of my hands also. But they don't want to use my nest boxes because the squirrel chews the doorways open to kill the baby birds, and store nuts in for the winter. The nuthatches and chickadees have totally different personalities, but both love walnuts over sunflower seeds.

Birds can be great entertainment. I’ve only has trouble with one nesting box and the squirrels. I try to keep a close watch over the boxes, especially when I know there is a nesting pair using them.

@@LSatch I have thought about reinforcing the door way with sheet metal or something to keep the squirrels out. I also found if I hang them on a birch tree, the squirrels don't like to climb them as much. :)

@@Pjsev hanging in a birch tree is a great idea. I have doubled the depth of the hole by putting another piece of wood on the outside. That helps with the squirrels too. Metal is probably the best solution but I find it difficult to work with.

Squirrels chewed my opening too on side of shed . since then i have screwed a false plate with the hole in - used a left over bit of hardwood floor - about 2 cm thick and very hard - They seem happy enough - and have a walnut tree next to that they mine for bark flakes for the east. My nest box for them is built inside.

Are nuthatches picky as to how high the nesting site must be or the direction it must face similar to how picky the Eastern Bluebird is?

Great question Joshua. Remember, I’m more of a woodworker than bird expert so I can only gift you what I’ve read and my personal experience. I’ve never had a bluebird nest in that Kentucky style birdhouse I made. I’ve tried it in three different locations on my 5 acres but every time a nuthatch has used it. All three times I changed directions of the opening. It’s been on a fence post, on the barn and on a pinetree. According to all I’ve read, nuthatches prefer a smaller opening but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
The box in this video, I moved farther into the woods, it was on the edge, this fall. They have not used it where it was.
      Hope this helps. Larry
