Nice job! Looks great. The bicycle rim makes a great top frame. I built my lower basket using a car/truck tire. Just cut the "top" sidewall off completely and about half the "lower" sidewall where it mounts to the same plywood disc(or aluminum street sign sheet metal) Most mechanic shops will give you the tire for free. Just make sure the inside diameter is the same as a regulation basket. I like the tire idea as it's weather resistant, easy to assemble and won't damage the discs.
Great video.. I almost was going to make one but once you add up all the parts its close to $200. I think ill just buy one. Awesome job though it was very creative!
I have to say out of all the how to videos I have come across on youtube, Id have to say with out a doubt this is by far the best how to video I have ever seen. Good job man. Btw how many rolls of tape did you go through?
+aero1310 Wow thanks man! I think I used at least two rolls maybe even three. Feel free to double up when taping the shorter tubes to the back of the brackets, that will soften the impact if your disc smacks the cage. Thanks again for the positive feedback!

This is awesome! Couple things. Electrical tape isn't the best for this. Over time it will stretch sure to heat and it leaves a mess. Possibly black duct tape. Also apply thread lock to the top of the bolts so the nut goes through it.
Grant Williams Great Grant! Just a heads up… I didn’t really have much luck with pulling the basket around my yard using a rope and added i-hook bolt attached to the umbrella base. Another idea I had for moving it around was possibly using wheels somehow. Like smaller wheels on a trash can that you can tilt on its side and then pull it around. I don’t know how you'd attach them to the base but just a thought. Also make sure you seal your plywood really well. If I had to do it over I wouldn’t have used the spray clear coat but instead an outdoor polyurethane (multiple coats). Good luck with the build!
Grant Williams Hey Grant! Sorry it took so long to get back. I slid the bottom pole into the umbrella base just as you would an umbrella. Then I flipped it upside-down and filled the base with concrete and let it dry in the upside-down position. Unfortunately I couldn't slide the pole out of the base once it dried, but I haven't had a reason to take it apart yet :) I'd love to see some pics of your basket once its done, maybe you could message them to me? Thanks and good luck!
Nicely done. I'm struggling with fixating a different top piece to the center pole. I'm trying to make one fairly ornate and think it would be cool to have sometype of special fixure on top, but the extra weight on the pole concerns me. ideas?
I'm building one of these. Great Video. The only thing I'll do different is just add the cement powder to the base dry and add water while it's in there. Thanks.
Awesome video and great work. I love the bike wheel idea. It looks awesome and it saves from putting all those pieces together. Sticking with the bike theme...Do u think u could slide those 2 pieces of sprinkler tube through an old bike tube? Before you put it on the brakets. We use them on our wiffle ball bats to give them bounce and they fit perfectly. Save some cash and time. I don't think it would wear like the tape would either.
+Chris Seaver Hey Chris! Thanks for the kind words man. I think it might be worth a try covering the upper tubing rings with a tube. It might be a challenge depending on how tight the fit is though. The electical tape has held up well even being outside in the elements. The tape does tend to get little dings but I haven't needed to retape anything yet. If you end up trying the tube let me know how it works out!
TheTweetch Thanks! I used about 30 feet of tubing between the three 27" diameter rings and the short vertical sections for the back of the brackets. At Home Depot the 1/2" sprinkler tubing comes in 50 or 100 foot sections and it's pretty cheap. Good luck with the build - I'd love to see the finished product :)
Robert Williams Thanks! So I used 12 outer chains 19 links about 24 inches total which attach to the tire rim (10 inches from the pole) to a 3" ring 5 inches above the plywood. The other 12 intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links which measure 5 inches or 7 inches from the outer diameter of the pipe. These inner chains link to a 3" ring 2.5" from the plywood. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. So as you go around... the distance from the outer diameter to the pipe goes 10"(rim), 5", 10" (rim), 7", 10" (rim) and so on. Hope this helps.
Ben Moyer Hey Ben! This basket is portable... I can disassemble it and it can fit in the trunk of my car. Everything basically fits inside the sprinkler tubing basket portion.
Hi Tom John! Thanks for commenting and all the way from Germany no less! It’s holding up great. I don't know if you saw but in the description there is a link to an update on how the basket looks, but that’s from 4 years ago. I still have it I outside in my back yard and it’s still catching my discs!! I did replace the 16.5 inch plywood recently. I should have used composite decking or epoxy to seal the plywood better. I just ended up painting the replacement plywood with multiple coats and its holding up but the paint is pealing a bit too. Thanks again for commenting and if you end up building one please let me know how it goes. it’s just a fun project!
Yeah Right Thanks! It's hard to put an exact cost because the first time I built one I had extra supplies left over. I would say it was around $130. And yes I'm a huge WEEN fan :)
Looking forward to making this basket but having trouble finding a bike rim that doesn't blow the budget. Where did you locate yours. Thanks for posting.
TeagueFor Judge That’s a great question thanks for asking. The cheapest new rim on Amazon that I came across was about $30 plus shipping and that was more than I wanted to spend. I checked with a few local bike shops to see if they had any bent rims I could have for free but they didn’t have any at the time. I ended up getting a used rim for free from a friend for my first basket I made. But for my second basket I just bought a cheap bike on Craigslist for $40 and just used the front wheel. I tried to sell the bike on Craigslist for $30 (yes with only one wheel) that way I figured I’d only pay $10 but alas no takers so it’s still in my shed...Good luck with the build!
TeagueFor Judge I found a bike at Salvation Army that had 22 inch wheels that were in great condition. Nabbed it for $13. Plan on scrapping the rest of the bike afterward.
Hey great video man. I think I'm going to give this a shot. Could you tell me the name of the awesome band that plays all these awesome songs? I can't seem to find them.
+Luke Ware Thanks Luke! I saw this band preform years ago at John and Peters in New Hope, PA. They were called Heavy Pets… unfortunately I don't think they are around anymore. BTW your not seriously considering making a basket for LADJROB LEE are you?!?! Let him buy the Amazon version :)
+BigJilm2 They're totally still around! Saw em on NYE in Philly 2013 and a few years after! They're still puttin out music, a little more funky sounding
+BigJilm2 I am making a disc golf basket for my metals class and I was wondering how much chain (length) you used to make yours. Thanks and nice video!
Looking to make one myself. You used two floor flanges, one on the top side of the plywood, and the second one on the opposite side? Might be a stupid question, relatively new to me. If I put one on the top side, screw it in and thread the top pipe in, should I then set up my holes to drill the second one (opposite/underneath of plywood and second threaded rod) perpendicular to where to top side screws pertrude, or do they not effect/ take account for them? If I lined up the top and bottom the same, I don't think I'd be able to screw from both sides. Please explain this to me? Thanks! Great Video!
Hi Alec - I centered the upper floor flange on the top of the plywood, marked the 4 bolt hole locations. Then removed the flange and drilled through the plywood as shown at 4:29. Then placed the upper floor flange on top and screwed the bolts in from above shown at 4:46. Then I flipped the plywood over and put the second floor flange over the ends of the bolts, then add the nuts as shown at 5:00. This step can be tricky trying to get the bottom floor flange to line up with the ends of the bolts. I found that drilling your bolt holes at a wider diameter gives you a little more play when trying to line up the bottom floor flange with the bolt ends. Also remember to add some sort of lubricant to the pipe threads to prevent the pipe from rusting to the flange. Mine are rusted tight after it's been left outside a few years... Hope this helps
+BigJilm2 So about the sprinkler tubing . Put the wooden dowel, connect the ends and fit around the brackets. Theirs only one time around where the screw would match with where the dowel connect the ends of the tubing. When you screw that section its base is that dowel. Anywhere else I'm just screwing with the tubing , no dowel their?
If you position the dowel between the brackets you won't have to worry about hitting the dowels when using the screws to fasten tubing to the brackets.
Thanks man. I've had my basket outside for over a year and a half now and it's held up well. The ends of the s hooks and the pipe threads have some rust. The plywood also looks weathered. I should have used a thicker outdoor polyurethane on the plywood or just painted it. I did coat some of the hardware with a RustOleum clear coat soon after the build which helped keep some of the rust off. I actually haven't "touched it up" because I want to make another short video on what it looks like a few years old. Keep an eye out for the follow up video!
Hi Big jilm2, I now this an old video but I’ve been trying to find the template you had for the chain layout, wondering if you have the link to the site so I can print it out thanks. And thanks for the great vid.
+chalder1 The outter chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. The other intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps.
Love the idea, but I just did some pricing in Excel and if you have to purchase all the materials it would cost at least 183.44+ tax (everything could be purchased from home depot BUT the bike rim and I did not add cost for screws or bolts) Add in Tax and labor, and you could purchase the $199 Innova basket (with free shipping) for much cheaper
Good video, You neglected to tell us some specifications here so I have a few questions... 1. How long should the sprinkler tubing be? (Figure it out from the holes in the brackets?) 2. How far apart is each bracket when connected to the plywood? (Knowing this could then answer question 1). 3. I'm sure I can figure out how to get 12 outer chains around it but lets say I can't how far apart is each hole to attach the chain? (Knowing this will help place the other set of chains) I think that is the only questions I have, thanks! Hopefully I can get my own basket ready to go! Got a couple modifications to add to it too if you are interested, I'll make a video too!
HellishWolf Gaming The sprinkler tubing on my basket measures about 90" (that's the top ring of the basket, the others are smaller). As I mention in the video I cut the tubing longer and trimmed it down to snug it up to the back of the brackets. The bracket diameter along that top ring of my basket measures about 26-3/4". My brackets are spaced about every 5-1/2" around the edge of the plywood. You can also figure out spacing for the 10 brackets by using a protractor. 360 degrees in your plywood circle so just center the brackets one every 36 degrees. My bicycle rim diameter is 22" and the holes I drilled for the 12 S-hooks are spaced about 6" apart (if your using your protractor thats 30 degree spacing). Let me know if you have any other questions. I'd defiantly be interested in seeing the mods and the finished product.
Alphonsus O'Rielly Thanks man - I saw this band preform years ago at John and Peters in New Hope, PA. They were called Heavy Pets… unfortunately I don't think they are around anymore.
+Jakub Cahlík +Devyn Thomas It's hard to put an exact cost because the first time I built one I had extra supplies left over. I would say it was around $130.
@@springysloth1186 yeah I ended up building my own it turned out half decently good but the total was around $115 it’s the chain that’s expensive and I had some of the material already like the wood, pole, tubing, tape and whatnot
Unless you have all this stuff laying around you're way better off just buying a basket on amazon. I'll bet this guy's been a week building this and more than $60 on the parts. 80 to 120 bucks for a basket on there
That's what counts. I just couldn't see the basket that he made in the video holding up for very long. I practice putting in my backyard almost every day and that entire setup would come loose and you'd have to replace the tape every year. Just bad fabrication for long-term. It would work all right for an indoor mini basket. Use nylon nuts and bolts instead of screws and it would hold up a lot better
Thanks Harris! I saw this band preform years ago at John and Peters in New Hope, PA. I bought their CD after the show and they were called Heavy Pets… Rumor has it they changed their style a bit and are more of a funky jamband now...
Hey Eric! I use to live in Point Pleasant just north of New Hope and actually went to high school at Plumstead Christian! What courses do you play? I use to play Tinicum daily when I was living there.
+Ben Ruholl Hi Ben, I've had my basket outside for over a year now and it's held up well. The ends of the s hooks and the pipe threads have some rust. The plywood also looks weathered. I should have used a thinker outdoor polyurethane on the plywood or just painted it. I did coat some of the hardware with a RustOleum clear coat which helped keep some of the rust off.
+aubrey hursh I actually used computer aided design software (CAD) to figure out the angles then printed out a template to scale. But any small cheap plastic protractor will work.
Love the build, best DIY basket I’ve seen. I just got stared on mine and I have a few questions about a few dimensions and measurements. 1) How far away from the center is each bracket mounted? 2) Is the 26” pole mounted on top with the basket? 3) How many sets of chain are on the inside? 4) How long is the chain in the inner sets AND the outer sets?
Hi Gabriel, Thanks for kind comments. Let me know if you have any more questions… 1) You position the brackets based on the diameter of the basket or cage. I think basket diameter is around 28 inches but you could measure any regulation basket cage to double check. So the brackets should be about 28 inches apart from one side to the other. 2) Yes 26” pipe goes on top and the shorter pipe goes on the bottom. Keep those pipe threads greased up too. Mine are rusted tight at this point. 3 & 4) The outer chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. There are 12 intermediate chains which vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps.
Hi Elizabeth, I guess you could use a larger tire and instead of drilling into the outer rim use the duck tape rolls as spacers around the spokes at the 22 inch diameter. It may be a little tricky finding spokes at consistent intervals though. If you do end up drilling into the larger tire rim just remember that the chains will hang down wider than a regulation basket, and that you will most likely need additional chain links to compensate.
I forget exactly what they were called. I picked them up from a local hardware store that has since closedown. I just searched 3 inch steel ring and came across these from amazon that should work. www.amazon.com/Realeather-Crafts-3-Inch-6-Pack-BRI-03-06/dp/B00DG8VBK6
Hey Blake, I just eyeballed the lengths for mine, the chain lengths may differ slightly but these are what mine came out to. The outter chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. The other intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps!
Lucas I think I still have them. But maybe this will help. My brackets are spaced about every 5-1/2" around the edge of the plywood. You can also figure out spacing for the 10 brackets by using a protractor. 360 degrees in your plywood circle so just center the brackets one every 36 degrees.
Sure man. You position the brackets based on the diameter of the basket or cage. I think basket diameter is around 28 inches but you could measure any regulation basket cage to double check. So the brackets should be about 28 inches apart from one side to the other. Also if you print one of these pictures out you can use it for the spacing. Just place the center of this pie picture in the center of your plywood. etc.usf.edu/clipart/40600/40610/pie_01-10a_40610.htm
TheTweetch Hey Tweetch! I'm measuring 4.5" from the tip of the bracket to the edge of the wood, then about 6" from the edge of the wood to the back of the vertical bracket.
Tanner Mack Thanks Tanner, See my response to Yeah Right below in the comments on the price, about $130 though. I guess it depends on the quality and price of the pre-made basket. Don't get me wrong it was a lot of hard work but it was fun too.
I apologize, I did not see it, but thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I am just trying to do some figuring. Whether it is worth going through the trouble making my own or just buying one. I have started looking for parts that are required to build this and I have to tell you, its difficult finding anything without spending a fortune. Just trying to find 22' bike tires alone is difficult. I will keep digging around and see what I can find. Thanks again for the response!
+Tanner Mack I got my bike tire at a local bike shop. I called and asked if they had any "untrue" bike wheels they needed to get rid of and they had a pile.
I actually used computer aided design software (CAD) to figure out the angles then printed out a template to scale. But any small cheap plastic protractor will work too. I think is was around 54 feet total. The outer chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. There are 12 intermediate chains which vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps.

Seems a little expensive if you don't have most of that sitting around, but it looks absolutely badass. Super cool, man.

Oh and 4) spacing the brackets on the scrap wood when attaching the tubing. Haven't seen that question answered yet

The way you cut the chains you could have used the removed links in place of s hooks. Just a thought
Wow you are a genius.
And a very good step by step video
Awesome basket! I'd suggest a 3rd ring of chains and a number plate on top for a logo or whatever. Great video too!
they make chain pliers fyi :) and when drilling to the wooden base always go across from each other not in a circle. great video!

+aubrey hursh Thanks - Home Depot cut the pipe to length and threaded the pipe for me. They have a machine that threads pipe in the plumbing aisle.

Great video, sir. I can't wait to take a crack at it. I was curious, after 2ish years, how is it holding up?
Awesome! I'm looking forward to that one.
Here's a link to the update ua-cam.com/video/cL4Xoyzf9Jc/v-deo.html
I saw! Looks great after 2 years. Not much maintenance at all.
Thanks for letting me know.

Hi Big jilm2, I now this an old video but I’ve been trying to find the template you had for the chain layout, wondering if you have the link to the site so I can print it out thanks.
And thanks for the great vid.
Hi Rod, Here is the template images.app.goo.gl/gFrpZSYJac5TpUnS7
@@BigJilm2 Thanks for that.
Cheers
Great job and great video. But too expensive with all that material. Might as well just go buy one.
How long did u cut the chain? How many pieced of each length?
+chalder1 The outter chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. The other intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps.
Looking at Home Depot's pipes online, there's only 1 1.25" pipe listed, a "1-1/4 in. x 10 ft. Galvanized Steel Pipe". Is that what I want?
I need the music playlist, songs have been stuck in my head.
Stanley Moody But what if he built it because he wanted to build his own instead of buying one?
+CharliePetersonTv very possible but most people look up diy because it's the cheaper route. I'm with Stanley Moody
Good video, You neglected to tell us some specifications here so I have a few questions...
1. How long should the sprinkler tubing be? (Figure it out from the holes in the brackets?)
2. How far apart is each bracket when connected to the plywood? (Knowing this could then answer question 1).
3. I'm sure I can figure out how to get 12 outer chains around it but lets say I can't how far apart is each hole to attach the chain? (Knowing this will help place the other set of chains)
I think that is the only questions I have, thanks!
I'd defiantly be interested in seeing the mods and the finished product.
dude, love the build, but i have to know who is the background music artist\song
Alphonsus O'Rielly Thanks man - I saw this band preform years ago at John and Peters in New Hope, PA. They were called Heavy Pets… unfortunately I don't think they are around anymore.
Thanks so much!
Simply great! How much it cost?
+Jakub Cahlík +Devyn Thomas It's hard to put an exact cost because the first time I built one I had extra supplies left over. I would say it was around $130.
whats the over all diameter of the bottom basket and how far apart are the l brackets?
Where did you got that Mach 5 template for chain placement?
images.app.goo.gl/gFrpZSYJac5TpUnS7
Do you have the longer pipe on the bottom or the top? I am slowly building this and I'm about to get the chains on it
Shorter pipe goes on the bottom! Keep those pipe threads greased up too. Mine are rusted tight at this point.
BigJilm2 thank you!
I know I'm about 7 years late on this video but if you see it can you tell me what your total cost came out to?
I was wondering this as well. I found a decent basket on amazon for 40-50$, and I assume that’s cheaper than this. Just wondering if it’s worth it
@@springysloth1186 yeah I ended up building my own it turned out half decently good but the total was around $115 it’s the chain that’s expensive and I had some of the material already like the wood, pole, tubing, tape and whatnot
Unless you have all this stuff laying around you're way better off just buying a basket on amazon. I'll bet this guy's been a week building this and more than $60 on the parts. 80 to 120 bucks for a basket on there
@@JonOfTheDead23 yeah I built one it ended up being around $110 but it was a good experience
I enjoyed watching and it was somewhat inspiring but, do I think I can now make one? No way. Probably just me.
Awesome video! What is the music?
Thanks Harris! I saw this band preform years ago at John and Peters in New Hope, PA. I bought their CD after the show and they were called Heavy Pets… Rumor has it they changed their style a bit and are more of a funky jamband now...
BigJilm2 awesome! Great tunes!!
Hey BigJilm2, I hear youre from New Hope, Pa! that's awesome I live in plumsteadville, just up the street from you! Small World
Hey Eric! I use to live in Point Pleasant just north of New Hope and actually went to high school at Plumstead Christian! What courses do you play? I use to play Tinicum daily when I was living there.
I play tinicum every weekend. My home course.
What size pipe flanges did you use?
+Scott Lewis Hey Scott - I used 1-1/4" flanges (4:18) to match the pipe diameter.
Where did you get the 3 inch rings? I tried using steel clamps and it didn't work well
Zach ODiesel I bought the rings at a local hardware store, I think they were around $2 each.
How weatherproof would you say this is? I ask because my shed is already kinda full.
BigJilm2 Hey thanks I think I might give it a go.
What kind of protractor did you use?
BigJilm2 Thanks for the help!
BigJilm2 How far away from the center of the basket are the intermediate chains mounted on the bicycle wheel?
Mine alternate 6 and 8 inches from the center of the wheel. My basket was modeled after a Mach V basket so I tried to follow that as my template.
BigJilm2 thanks for the fast reply!
Can you tell me the length of the 12 outside chains and the 12 inner chains?
Tanner Mack See my response to Robert Williams in the comments below for chain lengths :)
Ween fan?
Does the tire have to be 22in or could it be larger?
Hi Elizabeth, I guess you could use a larger tire and instead of drilling into the outer rim use the duck tape rolls as spacers around the spokes at the 22 inch diameter. It may be a little tricky finding spokes at consistent intervals though. If you do end up drilling into the larger tire rim just remember that the chains will hang down wider than a regulation basket, and that you will most likely need additional chain links to compensate.
My wife said, stick to making baskets!! 🤣🤣
What size of garden hose did you use
Hey Jonathan I used 1/2 inch sprinkler tubing. 1:46
How much did that cost ya
What are the 3" rings called exactly I can't find them anywhere for my basket
I forget exactly what they were called. I picked them up from a local hardware store that has since closedown. I just searched 3 inch steel ring and came across these from amazon that should work.

@@BigJilm2 alright I'll check them out thank you and the basket is kick ass I can't wait to finish mine
how much did you end up spending on supplies to build this basket?
tha1anonlymk It's hard to put an exact cost because the first time I built one I had extra supplies left over. I would say it was around $130.
A+
How you determine how short to cut the chain?
Hey Blake, I just eyeballed the lengths for mine, the chain lengths may differ slightly but these are what mine came out to. The outter chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. The other intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps!
When actually trying to make it i came across one main barrier, whats the inner diameter on the template?
The inner diameter of the machV template is 12inches. That’s where I put the duct tape rolls to hold the inner chains.
BigJilm2 thank you!
Is there any chance you have those templates still of how to space the brackets?
Lucas I think I still have them. But maybe this will help. My brackets are spaced about every 5-1/2" around the edge of the plywood. You can also figure out spacing for the 10 brackets by using a protractor. 360 degrees in your plywood circle so just center the brackets one every 36 degrees.
damn thanks for the quick reply, planning on building one tomorrow, if you have any of your plans still i would greatly appreciate any help!
the spacing i understand kinda,/found your reply i was wondering like, ho far to the edge to actually screw the brackets in.
I'M having a hard time finding a 3" welded ring in my area. Where did you find yours?
Mike George - I bought the rings at a local hardware store, I think they were around $2 each.
how much of the brackets are hanging over the wood?
TheTweetch Hey Tweetch! I'm measuring 4.5" from the tip of the bracket to the edge of the wood, then about 6" from the edge of the wood to the back of the vertical bracket.
Who is this band? Please
Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost to build this basket? Is it more, less or the same if you were to buy a basket pre-made?
Tanner Mack Check out Salvation Army and Goodwill for cheap bikes to harvest their wheels.
+Tanner Mack I got my bike tire at a local bike shop. I called and asked if they had any "untrue" bike wheels they needed to get rid of and they had a pile.
what is the template for the bracets to the wood?
I actually used computer aided design software (CAD) to figure out the angles then printed out a template to scale. But any small cheap plastic protractor will work too. What is the length of your chain
I think is was around 54 feet total. The outer chains have 19 links about 24 inches total. There are 12 intermediate chains which vary in length 19 or 20 links. The intermediate chains vary in length 19 or 20 links because the spokes are uneven. Hope this helps.
