This wood art easel is the perfect project DIY project for any artist! FREE PLANS! It can be completed with just a few 2x4's, but our client asked for solid maple! The best part is the adjustable canvas tray to can easily be moved to accommodate both sitting and standing!
A client contacted us to ask if we could build a wood art easel. They went to some big box stores and were not happy with the quality that they were selling so they asked us to make a custom one. This diy wood art easel was a lot of fun to build!
We ran into a little issue though…we build this out of solid maple (which is very very hard wood) and our little contractor table saw was NOT a fan. It literally took 2-3 minutes to cut down long strips of wood! And yes, before you ask, we did have a 40 tooth blade but probably should’ve used a 24 tooth in this application.

My wife has just started getting back into painting and I'm going to use these plans to build her an easel for her birthday. I'm terrible at working with wood, but I think even I can make this work. Thank you!
That’s awesome! I wish you the best of luck!
Another great build. Love seeing the outfeed bench in action!
Thanks Trey! It’s really coming in handy on all our upcoming builds!
Your easel looks real sturdy, great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
The Brand New cover for the paining 😎
I did one of those about 5 years ago.
Nice choice 👌
Thanks!
Thanks!
This is really cool! I'll do it! Thanks!
Awesome! Glad we could help! Thanks for stopping by and supporting the channel!
Just stopping in to like this for featuring the best album ever
You have impeccable tastes in music then! Thanks for the support!
Seriously 👌 my first thought when I saw the thumbnail
Brans new fan? Thats the album cover to deja entendu. Love it!
Thank you
You’re very welcome Mukesh! Thanks for checking out our channel
Thanks so much amazing work and also very simple way
I’m glad to hear you liked the project! Thanks so much for checking out my channel! 😀
Fantastic Chilbi.. too good..I am building one for myself...
What’s a chilbi?
Would love to see an idea to expand on something for the top to secure the canvas while you paint. I am searching YT for a DIY easel stand, love your design but I can be heavy handed. I like my painting not to move while I am painting lol. Very nice build though, I love maple wood beautiful wood.
Thanks for checking out the video! If you wanted a piece to secure the top, you could follow the exact same idea as the bottom tray, but basically flip it upside down for the top. I think that should work!
@@SpencleyDesignCo Brilliant Thank you.
Sure thing! If you try it, comment back and let me know how it works!! I’m sure other viewers would find it helpful too 😀
Great work 👍👍👍❤❤❤😃😃😃
Thank you very much! I appreciate the support
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm looking to make an easel for my wife and am checking out a bunch of UA-cam videos. I noticed when you were ripping the wood that you weren't using a rip blade.
Thanks for watching, mike!
nice work
Thank you very much!
Sick plan I’m gonna give it a go
Let me know how it goes for ya!
I would love to purchase your easel.
Thanks so much for checking out the video! Please submit all purchase inquiries through our website at: www.spencleydesignco.com/contact
Very helpful...easy to do..thank you...regards from india
Glad you enjoyed the project! Thanks for checking out the video and for your support
What kind of 2x4 would work best if I don’t have maple?
Hey Chris! Just a standard 2x4. Make sure to get one that’s kiln dried. You’ll be able to tell by looking for “KD” marked on the wood. A 96” long one should be right around $3-$4
BRAND NEW!!!
Glad someone saw the reference 😜
Came here for the deja entendu thumbnail
Do you like the painting? :)
@@SpencleyDesignCo great painting, great easel!
thanks! any other paintings you would like to see?
Maybe one of a naked guy with a boner? That’d be nice.
Just subscribed !. Making this for my girlfriends birthday 😂
That’s awesome, Israel! I hope it works out well for you! Thank you so much for the support
Me too! 😁👍
I hope it works well for ya!
You mentioned s jig to cut the 10 degree taper how do you make it?
www.spencleydesignco.com/projects/jointer-taper-jig?rq=Taper
The link for the design doesn’t work anymore :/
Which link? I just tested the one in the description and it took me to the website where the plans are
I live in Ohio too where are you getting your hardwood?
I go to a local sawmill. It's called almendingers
Do you sell the completed easel?
Yes I do
I wonder if you know that your website is unavailable
Which link are you trying to click on? Hoping I can rectify the issue. Thanks!
National Bouillabaisse Day
Does it matter how much I cut off on the 10 degree angle?
Carsten, it’s not critical that you’re absolutely perfect on that cut. There are free plans for this project on my website: www.spencleydesignco.com/maple-art-easel
Is it necessary to cut that 10° in 2:28 ? I don't have the tools to do that . Can i drill it directly without cutting that 10° ?
Hi, Casper! You can certainly do it without the 10 degree cut, it just won’t look as clean.
@@SpencleyDesignCo Oh okay thanks for your advice I'll try cutting that 10° to get that clean look .
Glad to help! If you don’t have a table saw, a miter saw, circular saw, jigsaw, or even handsaw would work just fine!
@@SpencleyDesignCo I'll definately try it with my circular saw .. and thanks again for your awesome advice 👊 .
Of course! That’s what we are here for!
Thanks for the video. It was great. Except for the constant asking for liking the video! I liked it. But I almost didn't, simply because of the bothersome asking aha
Making videos is just like anything else in life, always learning how to make them better!
great looking easel but why is there nothing to hold the painting from the top. sorry, im no expert.
Thanks for checking out the video and reaching out! Our client asked for no top hold down, and instead wanted the easel be able to told back more. Gravity holds the painting in quite well. You could definitely add one though!
@@SpencleyDesignCo ok thanks that makes sense :)
only 2 comments i see about deja entendu :/
Isn’t that sad? 🤷♂️ at least you appreciate it! 😀
Thank you!! Not as cool as yours but it works!!!
Thanks Lawrence!
Brand new 😬
Heyyy!!!! Glad someone got the reference 😀😀😀
Saw them live at Binghamton University
I was lucky enough to see them 4 times on their last tour...it was INSANE!
Does anyone know of the exact dimension of the hardware used?
Which one?
@@SpencleyDesignCo the bolts! 😀
Which one?
@@SpencleyDesignCo all of them
@@SpencleyDesignCo ?
I don't have all these tools thoo
I’ve seen similar ones sold online too
That would be s3s not s2s
The lumber was purchased s2s and ripped at the store to s3s
As an artist, I don't think any A frame easels are gonig for $500, even in today's economy (the highest I've seen around are less than $300). H frames are the more expensive ones (up to $1000).
Good techniques, camera angles, lighting, focus etc and beautiful finished product, but instructions acutely lacking in ease of understanding because of narration and shot editing.
Thanks nonetheless for the video and your time and effort.
Thanks for checking out the video 😀 all the measurements you need are in the free pdf plans to accompany the video
Nice idea but I came here for DIY because I am poor and cannot afford an easel, what makes you think I have power tools? I have 2 old screw drivers and sand paper.... I'm not completely shitting on this, it has given me some inspiration of how to build one but this is rich people DIY to me.
Thanks for the feedback, Kai. Looks like this project wasn’t for you.
You guys sound's so boring while explaining 🤣no energy at all
I don’t disagree. This is one of the first videos I ever made. Take a look at a more recent one and let me know if there’s improvement 😀
