I think I can finally stop distro-hopping. Norbara get Fedora and just
makes it even better. For my hardware it works perfectly and this is the
first time I had no reason to try something new. In this video we will
talk about what this distro is, some of the modifications I've made and
    highlight my experiences with it.

Thanks for the kind words on your review! I'm glad your experience has been well! As for the package manager bits -- the two main reasons we switched to yumex-dnf + bauh instead of the normal software centers is for two main reasons: 1. i wanted to show a specific split difference between flatpaks and normal packages so that new users dont confuse the two, and 2. I found that at least with gnome-software it does not install 32 bit versions of packages (which are needed for things like wine or nvidia drivers). While the default software centers still remain for installation unfortunately people aren't keen on the defaults so we may switch back. Apart from that the distro has really reached a pretty good stable point. This year in general Nobara has gone through a lot of changes, I'm hoping now that most of the major kinks are worked out we'll have a solid release when 37 is ready.

what a time to be alive. I remember back when I was on Linux as my default machine struggling to get 1 or 2 games running. now you can build a gaming rig and use Linux as your. main OA and have enourmous game availability. I ordered a steam deck out of enthusiasm and I have been shocked at compatibility and that I could just switch to desktop a d. e running Linux. I've been using windows/macOS for the last few years. Indeed, I still remember spending a considerable amount of time reading about Linux OS and fiddling with its distros in the early-to-mid 2000s, but gaming compatibility issues alone eventually kept me just on Windows, even though I knew Linux distros could easily satisfy like 80% of my general PC computer needs.
And to be fair, it's only now with Valve pushing its Arch based Steam OS 3.0 with its Proton compatibility layer that the idea of finally being able to do (Windows) gaming and general PC tasks on just 1 Linux distro is something that could very soon be a viable and widespread option...

I see nothing weird, frankly. Many aspects of the Linux world are legally grey or comparatively legally unusual, such as codecs or lack of warranty. Nobara goes against many legal decisions that Fedora made and every single notice in that EULA is perfectly reasonable, some of them are even nothing out of the ordinary. If anything, I appreciate the transparency because they're not even admitting to anything bad in that EULA, just pointing out some things to help people avoid misusing the distro to their disservice (like putting Nobara into prod).

_the perfect Linux Distro_ - well... I'd Rather go with what Anthony Young from LTT said:
Since Linux is so configurable and unlike Windows or Mac is not locked down it doesn't matter what distro you choose because you can change everything you want on any system. You end up picking a distro as base that is closest to your needs and configure it to your liking.

It's quite misleading when people say "you can change everything". That's like saying everyone can program an engine or "anyone can cook".

Nobara is good if you have hardware that needs specific kernel patches. (Like some controllers.) But for most people, you won’t need those and you’d be better off using Fedora because Nobara breaks important security features like SELinux and Secure Boot because of those patches.

    • @GloriousEggroll
      @GloriousEggroll Рік тому +120

Nobara does not "break" SELinux. It's shipped in passive mode which means it logs everything but does not block anything. You can easily set it to enabled/disabled/passive in /etc/selinux/config + reboot, and can view all of the logs in setroubleshootd. As for secureboot you would have the same problem with any other customized kernel, which most people commonly do anyway while gaming (zen, liquorix). People seem to really like fear mongering on SELinux because they don't know anything about it or how it works.

@@GloriousEggroll Thanks for clearing this out. Was a bit confused about the SELinux stuff there for a momoent. Also, is secure boot really that necessary on a personal computer that sits at home?

I set Selinux config in enforcing mode, right after fresh install of this great distro. And unless you have Nvidia GPU, secure boot option should not disturb you. @YvanDaSilva Рік тому +7

@@GloriousEggroll that's the thing. I don't consider a gaming rig a throw away machine. I think such things need to be communicated clearly, we fail very much at it in the Linux community.
We can't have at the same time the message that Linux is more secure bla bla and at the same time lowering barriers because we want to run some non upstreamed patches.
This is exactly why I would never play something like valorant that installs a kernel anti cheat on windows... That's just crazy.
Most people run a multi usage machine, the ones that actually run custom kernels are a minority of a minority. They are Linux users that want something very specific.
So I appreciate the work that you're doing, but I wouldn't run a machine with such changes (specially laptops). Even though, yes, I agree, we can live fine without secure boot and without selinux.
I find it absolutely disgusting that we have to go to MS to get the bootloader signed... It should be an open foundation. But that's a different talk...
There's much work to be done on that front.

One thing I'd like is a guide to replicate Nobara's tweaks on other distros. I run endeavourOS myself, better community than arch without constantly breaking things with partial updates like Manjaro (The AUR is perfect for me as frankly I don't want to use flatpaks as I heavily disagree with how flathub is pushing online accounts) but I also like to play games, so knowing what specific kernel tweaks were added, how to replicate them (or if you can) etc. would be really nice.
(I should add that I'm talking about manjaro breaking things, and I know some people are just fine with it, but I've heard pretty consistently it does NOT play well with the AUR, and I have a lot of niche programs that are only avaliable from the AUR, like my VPN's client software, my VLAN client, (yes I know that's just a VPN too but lets be honest, if I say VPN you don't think hamachi, you think nord) etc. are all AUR only, so I just can't reasonably use Manjaro personally. I'm sure for some people it's fine, but it just breaks just the wrong things for me. So simmer down youtube comments, if you use it, good for you, it just wouldn't work for me)

    • @kerrydaniels8460
      @kerrydaniels8460 Рік тому

I thought Zorin was Ubuntu based? Unless they changed that extremely recently it is Ubuntu based. Yes, Ubuntu derived from Debian back in the day, but generally we consider Ubuntu different than Debain for a host of reasons that Debian simply does not follow at all. So it is important to make those distinctions.
I like Zorin myself, but find myself using Fedora with my own tweaks (as I would tweak any distro). Just works for me and I used to hate Gnome, but Fedora 35/36 just changed the game for me. Just solid with much more up to date packages especially if you're rocking newer gear and/or do any development like myself. Have had little issue at all out the box.
I like Zorin's nice desktop options and ofc it is probably as close as you're gonna get to a Windows clone out the box. I especially love how easy they make it on beginners coming from Windows. This is why I originally bought Pro and donated as I liked them making it easy on folks like that and supported their work. Bravo to each!

What a coincidence, I have downloaded nobara & am thinking of testing it.
But I have a few concerns,
    About the dev:
    1. Isn't nobara maintained by a single developer?
    2. Since the dev is involved in other projects & this distro is he going to keep supporting it in the long run or burn out?
    About the OS security:
Since gaming is the sole priority & the OS has a many changes & bunch of proprietary programs.
    1. How fast are updates added compared to fedora WS?
    2. More importantly how fast are security patches & bug fixes updated, especially system updates?
    3. How do the gaming oriented kernel changes affect security? Do they make the security model weaker?, decrease the hardening?
    4. Don't the bundled proprietary software increase the attack surface?
    5. Does it have the same secure boot support that fedora has?
My main concerns are longterm support, reliability, security & privacy because Nobara OS really solves my gaming, customisation & usability needs.

In terms of security, SELinux is set to permissive mode by default which isn't particularly great if you care about security (it doesn't block anything, it only logs suspicious stuff to some file somewhere but we all know 99% of users using the distro will never read it). You can change it back to enforcing manually though.

Nobara is a hobby fork of Fedora with 1 maintainer and some extremely questionable and downright wrong choices/tweaks, and even breaks things such as secure boot because it uses a custom kernel which isn't signed, and they have disabled SELinux, and improperly configured dnf. Just get Fedora and set it up how you want it. I know who GloriousEggroll is. Doesn't mean that he can make a distro.

Fedora being created by billion dollar corporations (IBM and RedHat) is exactly why it is so good and stable. Most of the good stuff on Linux exists thanks to corporations. Sorry to burst your bubble, but almost all Linux kernel development is done by corporations. Over 80% of all kernel code is written by for-profit corporations. Almost all good, powerful Linux technologies and projects are created by and funded by corporations. Everything from filesystems to audio systems and everything in between. Even Linus Torvalds himself works for corporations to maintain Linux. You owe your entire existence on Linux thanks to corporations. That is exactly why I use Fedora. However times have changed and for the past decade I have installed Ubuntu server followed by i3 Window Manager and followed by apps. Today most of my apps are all flatpak based except for a few critical apps that only have snap or appimage versions. This means when next I upgrade, I can literally install virtually any linux as a base OS with all my same apps on top of it and I can safely delay upgrading for some time since my primary apps are updated irrespective of the libraries of the underlying OS. It has lots of ideas that inspired me to configure things in my system (e.g. the COPR for gaming tools like gamescope and others; obs-vkcapture). However, I do wish that most of the things done in Nobara were not necessary ("Getting rid of the need for the usecase Linux distribution" lays the premise for that) and users were able to just install the software they need with ease (without much gatekeeping from Fedora) and kernel tinkering was non-existent.
