Alex Hirsch is amazing, he put a lot of little mysteries and codes in this series. It does indeed say "three letters back" referring to the cypher that will be used at the end of the credits, telling you to use the Caesar Cypher.
That broken glass gag goes back to silent movies - during a comedy car chase the lead driver would break the glass carried by 2 workmen. The gag might be repeated 2 or 3 times to see the reaction of the workmen which would get more violent each time the car crashed through them. The version here ups the joke because instead of crossing the street, they are crossing a lake with a pane of glass which is ridiculous on the face of it
If you want too you should I also highly recommend after hand or during watching old theory videos for the series they help you catch the secrets if you’re like me and can’t notice them-
Grunkle Stan isn't reaching for anything in that photo, he's doing the classic Napoleon portrait pose, it was a common pose for people to take when getting a portrait painted. Some jackets have what are called Napoleon Pockets, where you can reach into them
In the DVD commentary, Grunkle Stan describes his ex thus: "I was actually married for less than a day. Vegas situation. We reached for the same slot machine handle and it was love at first sight. Marilyn. Had hair like an airline stewardess and a neon pink shirt that said, “over thirty and very flirty”. Man I was putty in her hands. It's not just a boomer joke, Stan's ex-wife stole all his Vegas money and his car after being Married for 24 hours, her name was Merrilyn, it was probably a fake name, Stan describes her in a DVD commentary, she had pale skin and this one weird sharp tooth On a side unrelated note, in Owl house, Eda used Merrelyn as a fake name in the human world to try to buy a Latte with a living Racoon as payment
Since that description is from a commentary Alex probably had already seen Dana’s concept art for Eda and decided it would be fun to make a connection.

There are a TON of shout out gags and subtle homages to GF in Amphibia and TOH, in addition to the explicit references between all three of these shows, because both Dana and Matt worked on GF!!
The fact you're getting into the mystery even though it was completed years ago brings me so much joy. I hadn't seen the show when it came out and missed the mystery, so I'm excited to experience it with you!
15:07 Yes and no, it's a common trope in entertainment often used in chase scenes that adds a bit of comedy. The trope plays out with two movers carrying a sheet of glass on a sidewalk/street and the main characters or the party they're chasing end up smashing through the glass, ruining the poor movers' day. The trope is so well known that modern shows reuse and sometimes add to it as a comedic callback
this series is absolutely packed with secrets! There are cyphers all around in random frames, and keys to decrypt them. Sometimes there are pages from the book, sometimes they are just randomly across objects in the background. It's amazing! They also have a bunch of recurring characters that will appear somewhere in an episode
Fun fact: There are lots of backwards messages that are said throughout the show. They can contribute to the lore around the show or be just some hidden lines in the show. If you want to decode them, look online or reverse the clips. You can also look online for the journal 3 to find some secrets of gravity falls that werent featured in the show!
She not the kind of person that skips episodes and I can think of 2-3 episodes that's is completely filler with no plot though one of them is still good the other one the only bad episode in the show and another one a pretty decent episode that maybe filler
17:57 idk that might be a reference to Napoleon. Because in a lot of his portraits, when he was posing, he had his hand hidden in his coat, like how Stan is doing it. (I googled why Napoleon had his hand in his coat and it said, “But the truth behind the look has little to do with Napoleon at all, and more to do with portraiture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Concealing a hand in a shirt became a common pose in paintings as a symbol of statesmanlike nobility and restraint.” It’s known as the hand-in-waistcoat pose, and it was popular due to the connotations of class and good manners it presented. Napoleon was not the only person who did it, although he might be the most famous person in that group, it was popular among the aristocracy of Europe from the 1750s until the early 1800s)
Mabel and Dipper Pines were loosely based on creator Alex Hirsch and his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch. While growing up, the two would spend their summer vacations in a cabin with relatives, which inspired the setting and scenario for Gravity Falls.
I would like to just confirm that the hidden message is definitely “3 letters back” and the people are supposed to apply it to the end credits and other parts (you’ll know it when you see it) to decipher a hidden code. Alex does change the cipher at times.
It actually IS 3 letters back!! It's how you can solve the codes at the end of the credits scenes in the first half of season 1 (second half is reverse alphabet ciphers, and the second season is a very complicated strategy that I still have yet to understand lol)!
SPOILERS FOR 'CODE' AT THE END OF THE EPISODE - - - - - - - - - Im really glad she took the time to edit that whispering part of the intro that says "three letters back" because that's how to solve the cypher/code in the credits screen. The code at the end of this episode reads: "Next Week: Return to Butt Island" I cant wait to see Elijah react to future episodes!
I think the whisper you found is supposed to say “three letters back.” Not only because I hear “three letters back” but because Gravity Falls is notorious for its backwards messages, so it would make sense that the backwards one is correct. Also, “three letters back” could be a reference to the Caesar cipher, a cipher commonly used in this show. It could be Alex Hirsch’s way of telling us how to decode secret messages that pop up later this episode. However “I’m still here” could very well be what it’s supposed to say, due to… future events- in the show.
So the "three letters back" thingy, this is like the owl house, secrets messages EVERYWHERE. I'm actually surprised that you figured that out just on the second episode, it took me an entire season
This is actually one of my favorite episodes of Gravity Falls. It doesn't give us many earth-shaking plot revelations, but it introduces my favorite character -- Old Man McGucket, the most lovable spree killer in fiction -- and it has an impressively high funny-joke-to-uncomfortable-joke ratio. Also, without spoiling anything, you're right not to trust Stan.
the main thing you need to know about GF is that there are hidden messages and secrets EVERYWHERE!!! that was the big appeal to the show, the mystery element that engaged the viewers
The weird little clues in this show are so cool, like that little backwards part in the intro, keep looking and you'll definitely find stuff. There were whole communities around these background secrets as the eps were coming out
I can’t believe it. This week, it’ll have been ten years since a seven year old boy sat down with his sister in front of the Disney Channel to see some weird show about some kids in the woods with the really cool previews. Strange, the passage of time. Ah, but yeah, welcome to the OG stomping grounds. Where now the kids roam with their Owl House theories and their Amphibi- ah. Right. Best show ever has concluded. (Thank you Matt for changing my life) ANYWAY, Gravity Falls! First thing you gotta know is, this show pushed the envelope hard. You saw the milk joke, the forgery stuff. Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls (and the voice of Stan, Soos, the old man whose name you’ll learn later, King and Hooty Clawthorne, and a host of others) and Dana’s ex, made something that changed the landscape of children’s entertainment forever onwards. The crew went a whole bunch of different directions after the show ended. Mike Rianda, storyboard artist and writer, went on to make The Mitchells Vs The Machines for Netflix. Fantastic movie. Dana storyboarded for the show a bit, look where she is now. And a director and storyboarder who also moved on? Matt Braly AND Shion Takeuchi. The latter of whom went with Alex to Netflix to create the _fantastic_ series Inside Job. Braly, yeah you need no introduction to funny fhroggy man.
Fun fact: the show's creator Alex Hirsch, who voices King & Hooty (as well as some additional background characters) in The Owl House, also voices Grunkle Stan, Soos, Old Man McGucket, Jeff the gnome, Shmebulock the gnome, & the show's main villain (who you'll meet much later). He appeared in Amphibia as The Curator of the Curiosity Hut Mr. Ponds, & his employee Frog Soos (all of these being Amphibia's alternate universe versions of Grunkle Stan, the Mystery Shack, & Soos). Dana Terrace worked on storyboarding for Gravity Falls & Matt Braly directed episodes. Their work on Gravity Falls is how they were able to create The Owl House & Amphibia, & why Alex Hirsch is so supporttive of both shows.
The waitress with the frying pan is voiced by Jennifer Coolidge, and Manly Dan the guy who punches the fish is Wendy’s dad. There’s lots of fun little things in the background
Stan was making a pose of napoleon. Who had been rumored to have baby hands and always hid his hands in stuff he wore. Gravity falls a wonderful show that even from this episode refers to real-life mysteries
11:33 the kicker is that Stan actually was married... For I think like 16 hours or something in Vegas. Then she divorced him, stole all his winnings, and disappeared during an elaborate police chase and he never saw or heard from her again.

The secret you found in the opening of this episode, is part of a series of secrets hidden in the beginning and end of every episode. If you find them in succession, I think they form a message~ Gravity Falls always delivered on giving an boundless amount of entertainment even in the intros and outros!
It’s three letters back. If you watch the credits, there’s a code in there that you decipher by using this trick. There are officially 3 different ways to decipher codes and each episode tells you in the intro which one it is. There is one at the end of every episode!
Alex Hirsch voices many characters in this show like Gruncle Stan, Soos, the gnomes, the pelican in this episode, Dippie Fresh & uses the same voice for Bill as he did for King
100% both translations of the hidden message is correct. Every episode's credits has a code in the ending and the first handful of episodes use the "Cesarian Cipher" where you move the letters 3 back in the alphabet to translate.
The backmasked whisper in the opening is a hint to decoding the cyphered messages in the end credits. The whisper changes whenever the cypher switches to a new method. All three of the main cyphers used in season 1 are straight-forward and well-known substitution cyphers. In season 2, the cyphers go _bonkers,_ both in terms of difficulty, and in how many are hidden throughout the episodes, in addition to the end credits. This is because by then the creators knew that there was a huge, enthusiastic internet community dedicated to finding and decoding anything they hid in the series. dedicated Thus, the season 1 cyphers were chosen to be crackable by a single person working on their own, while the season 2 cyphers were designed for a group of _thousands_ working in concert to scour every frame of the show for secrets.
mabel and sooses response to seeing the goblwonker was: flight mean while dippers response at first: freeze and that is why we have fight, flight, and of course we have freeze.
Awesome that you caught the decode message in the beginning credits and cipher in the end credits. When I watched this with my niece when it aired on DisneyXD I didn’t catch these until literally we were watching reruns of the first season while waiting for season 2 to premiere. I mentioned that the sound at the ending credits was an odd thing to have and she just flat out said “it’s the clue so you can figure out the code at the end of the show.” When I asked what code she remembered to show me at the end. She then told me that’s how she had hints about some stuff and other jokes. Which honestly I knew I missed them when she first mentioned the jokes later when talking about episodes, I had no idea they were hidden via code. I’m not much for deciphering things and doing puzzles, but she likes that kind of stuff and definitely tried to do them....season 2 is packed with ciphers, codes, and puzzles and so until I bought her the complete series on DVD she did miss some of those when watching as it aired. Love the reaction! Glad you’re enjoying Gravity Falls! It’s such a fun show to watch!
@@lazy9099 Thanks, I don't wanna be mean to a fellow Disney channel fan, just want Elijah to have the best experience and not to have to worry about spoilers
You are correct about "three letters back", it's a hint at how to decipher the code at the very end credits of everything episode. I think you'd have a blast decoding this series.
15:01 Two guys carrying glass like that and someone passing through breaking it has been quite the recurring gag in most pieces of media like TV shows and movies. So I doubt it was a deliberate reference from Amphibia. 17:49 I’m pretty sure that picture is there to have the joke of “haha, Stan’s head isn’t properly in frame”. Also a pose like that is quite the recurring pose for fancy photos and paintings. Look at some old photos and paintings of people like guys in the military and there’s a chance that the guys in the photos/paintings are doing that pose of sticking they’re hand into a coat or jacket like that. The most notable person who posed like that for stuff like paintings is Napoleon. The hidden message at the end of the opening is indeed a backwards message that says “three letters back”, and hints on how to decipher the code at the end credits. And I too got a bit of anxiety from the running gag of the cameras getting lost or destroyed in the episode. Maybe that’s the perfectionist in me not liking important things getting lost like that.
If you need an Owl House fix during the hiatus, you should react to the comics made by MoringMark. They're awesome, and most of us call it canon until disproven.
For your voice, try some ginger tea with honey (hoping that you're not allergic to either ginger or honey). (And at least there are tea options; my mother used to have me pop a piece of actual ginger in my mouth like a piece of candy when I had a sore throat or coughed too much.) I'm stoked that you're noticing the whisperings and codes. Also, pay close attention to certain episodes and background stuff. The creators of this show love to add some "fun" and informative stuff that will prove mind-blowing in the future.
To be honest I never knew this was the 2nd episode of gravity falls I thought it was like the 5th episode- (I didn't know what were each episode names and the numbers because I didn't care about It[sorry for bad grammar])
Same! When I just started watching Gravity Falls on Disney channel I didn't know the numbers or titles of the episodes, and the good thing was that I didn't even need to cos they all had their own story to tell without the need to watch any other episodes to understand what's going on. But when the plot started to develop more and I started to watch new episodes online(I didn't know English much back then so I watched unprofessional dub on the internet cos I couldn't wait for the official dub that takes forever) I also started to keep track of them.
First: the scene of them smashing into a pane of glass -- and the tv in Amphibia -- are actually a reference to action movie chase scenes. For a while, there was a trend where two people would be moving a sheet of glass across the street, when the cars would come down the road, and smash into it. There was also a trend of hitting fruit carts. Second: Grunkle Stan wasn't reaching for anything when he had his hand in his fishing vest. He was posing like George Washington in the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware. Had we been able to seem him full, Stan likely would have place a foot on the prow as well.
I feel so proud of seeing Elijah decoding stuff for the first time, I remember watching the show and when I was like WTF at the intro and making my conspiracy theories on other moments 🥺 So it's gonna be AMAZING to see how she does with Gravity Falls! (which I think it'll be great considering how smart Elijah is and the analysis of Hollow Mind)
I already commented this on your previous "Gravity Falls" video, but if you're looking to decode the end credit ciphers, here's a guide on what kind of ciphers are gonna be used on these episodes: SEASON 1 - Episodes 1-6 = Caesar Cipher - Episodes 7-13 = Atbash Cipher - Episodes 14-20 = A1Z26 Cipher Season 2 onwards uses the Vigenère cipher
spoiler alert for the finale episode of gravity falls : I think the line: I'm still here in the intro is Bill Cipher telling us he didn't really die in the finale, in the finale Bill's finale words turned backwards is: A.X.O.L.T.L my time has come to burn, I envoke the ancient power that I may return, so I think Bill is still Alive and I think the i'm still here is the shows way of telling us that Bill is still alive and if that's true it means that the creator had this planned from the Start (sorry for my bad English LOL)
1. It does say Three Letters Back. Many tidbits in the show are written in Caesar Cipher, where you roll back each letter so many places to get the actual word. Using Caesar 3, if it shows "Pdeho" it will actually be the word "Mabel." 2. In the picture of Stan, he was doing the "Napoleon Pose." 3. I'm curious on what side of the fence you will be on regarding Mabel as the show goes on. The fandom is pretty spit between liking her and hating her as the series progresses.
In really old movies when there was some sort of a chase a couple of people would carry a sheet of glass as an unexpected disruption. It became a trope from then on.

The version here ups the joke because instead of crossing the street, they are crossing a lake with a pane of glass which is ridiculous on the face of it
Man, now I really want to know what those guys were doing transporting a glass pane across a lake instead of, ya know, going around the lake?

god i can’t wait for her reaction to the “17 disposable cameras” scene, by far my favorite scene in the show
If you want too you should
I also highly recommend after hand or during watching old theory videos for the series they help you catch the secrets if you’re like me and can’t notice them-
Grunkle Stan isn't reaching for anything in that photo, he's doing the classic Napoleon portrait pose, it was a common pose for people to take when getting a portrait painted. Some jackets have what are called Napoleon Pockets, where you can reach into them
In the DVD commentary, Grunkle Stan describes his ex thus:
"I was actually married for less than a day. Vegas situation. We reached for the same slot machine handle and it was love at first sight. Marilyn. Had hair like an airline stewardess and a neon pink shirt that said, “over thirty and very flirty”.
Man I was putty in her hands. You should have seen the way she threw dice, one time right at my head. Turns out she only married me to distract me while she stole my car and all my winnings. I guess her name was fake, and her hair was fake, but ya know, the love was real.
She really was the one that got away. Like, literally, it was a proper get away. She was chased by cop cars for a mile out of Vegas before ducking out a door and into a canyon and making off with all my loot. Sometimes I still think of her, the pale bingo-hall skin, that one weirdly sharp tooth. Sorry, I’m still nostalgic."
Sound like anyone we know? :)

Stan’s ex-wife joke has become a staple of the Gravity Falls fanbase.
It's not just a boomer joke, Stan's ex-wife stole all his Vegas money and his car after being Married for 24 hours, her name was Merrilyn, it was probably a fake name, Stan describes her in a DVD commentary, she had pale skin and this one weird sharp tooth
On a side unrelated note, in Owl house, Eda used Merrelyn as a fake name in the human world to try to buy a Latte with a living Racoon as payment
Since that description is from a commentary Alex probably had already seen Dana’s concept art for Eda and decided it would be fun to make a connection.

I love how whenever Elijah sees a bit adult content in kids shows she just loves to bring out "So Disney Adult joke good, Gay bad?" 😅 like she has a point come on Disney.
The fact that like half of the characters are played by Alex Hirsch never fails to be funny. Also there a character with the same voice tone as king so

Man I didn’t even think of that.

5:54 three letters back is one of the codes, that you can use to solve the codes in the show
There are a TON of shout out gags and subtle homages to GF in Amphibia and TOH, in addition to the explicit references between all three of these shows, because both Dana and Matt worked on GF!!
15:10 The "two guys carrying a big pane of glass" is a gag that goes back to silent movies.
The fact you're getting into the mystery even though it was completed years ago brings me so much joy. I hadn't seen the show when it came out and missed the mystery, so I'm excited to experience it with you!
the message at the end, after you decipher it, is:
Next week: Return to butt island
Man I love this show. It's gonna be a smooth, mildly emotion and traumatic ride to OH season 3
2:48 Episode 5 has a very special "sugar rush."
The stan'o'war is actually a reference to future episodes
And his intentiona are actually pretty cool
If your gonna watch this show. Do not I mean do not skip any filler episodes like almost every single episode has something important in it
She not the kind of person that skips episodes and I can think of 2-3 episodes that's is completely filler with no plot though one of them is still good the other one the only bad episode in the show and another one a pretty decent episode that maybe filler
@@jeremybottoms7619 All episodes have character development. There's no actual filler, you will lose out on later moments if you skip episodes.
@@jeremybottoms7619 true
17:57 idk that might be a reference to Napoleon. Because in a lot of his portraits, when he was posing, he had his hand hidden in his coat, like how Stan is doing it.
(I googled why Napoleon had his hand in his coat and it said, “But the truth behind the look has little to do with Napoleon at all, and more to do with portraiture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Concealing a hand in a shirt became a common pose in paintings as a symbol of statesmanlike nobility and restraint.”
It’s known as the hand-in-waistcoat pose, and it was popular due to the connotations of class and good manners it presented. Napoleon was not the only person who did it, although he might be the most famous person in that group, it was popular among the aristocracy of Europe from the 1750s until the early 1800s)
It's kinda crazy that you're reacting to this show on its 10th anniversary.
SPOILERS FOR 'CODE' AT THE END OF THE EPISODE

Im really glad she took the time to edit that whispering part of the intro that says "three letters back" because that's how to solve the cypher/code in the credits screen.
The code at the end of this episode reads:
"Next Week: Return to Butt Island"
I cant wait to see Elijah react to future episodes!
7:21 Blendin Blandin in the background.
If you don't know who he is, he appears in "The Time Traveler's Pig"
I love that Alex hirsh just had every set from the start lol 😂
I think the whisper you found is supposed to say “three letters back.” Not only because I hear “three letters back” but because Gravity Falls is notorious for its backwards messages, so it would make sense that the backwards one is correct. Also, “three letters back” could be a reference to the Caesar cipher, a cipher commonly used in this show. It could be Alex Hirsch’s way of telling us how to decode secret messages that pop up later this episode. However “I’m still here” could very well be what it’s supposed to say, due to… future events- in the show.
I think it’s the cipher hint because some whispers played backwards say “ A to Z” which is the A1Z26 cipher
It's the cipher hint
OMG, we brazilians are loving watching this series and please bring episode 3 as soon as possible 🇧🇷❤️
The weird little clues in this show are so cool, like that little backwards part in the intro, keep looking and you'll definitely find stuff. There were whole communities around these background secrets as the eps were coming out
11:32 it took me 8 years to finally get the joke 🤦🏾♀️
This community has solved everything in this show front to back so it's a miracle you haven't been spoiled
I don't think she noticed but there was an episode of Amphibia when they visited the amphibian version of the Mystery Shack 😭😭
That was a hilarious episode
Among a LOT of others, Stan, Soos, and Old Man Mackuget are voiced by creator Alex Hirsch
"My ex-wife still misses me, BUT HER AIM IS GETTING BETTER!"
11:33 the kicker is that Stan actually was married... For I think like 16 hours or something in Vegas. Then she divorced him, stole all his winnings, and disappeared during an elaborate police chase and he never saw or heard from her again.
Gonna love rewatching this series. You seem to be super into codes and clues so be sure to watch out for them in this series :)

It’s three letters back. If you watch the credits, there’s a code in there that you decipher by using this trick. There are officially 3 different ways to decipher codes and each episode tells you in the intro which one it is. There is one at the end of every episode!
Hey Elijah. I think you should post a Gravity Falls reaction on June 15th because on that day the show turns 10 years old.
I feel old now….
Ooo, yes!!!
I always assumed the "two men carrying some long thin object, ie ; glass to just get destroyed" thing was just a common trope in chase senes.
Alex Hirsch voices many characters in this show like Gruncle Stan, Soos, the gnomes, the pelican in this episode, Dippie Fresh & uses the same voice for Bill as he did for King
Maybe don't mention the names of later characters
Nobody can predict what hippie fresh means, And I think everyone in the world of animation knows of Bill
100% both translations of the hidden message is correct. Every episode's credits has a code in the ending and the first handful of episodes use the "Cesarian Cipher" where you move the letters 3 back in the alphabet to translate.
I'm so excited. Her reactions are always entertaining to watch

Yes another episode. (Not a spoiler) Also look on the background when mgucket is talking. That guy appears a lot.
7:23 see here it is, I wrotevthe thing before the episode reaction came out

Two guys carrying glass like that and someone passing through breaking it has been quite the recurring gag in most pieces of media like TV shows and movies. So I doubt it was a deliberate reference from Amphibia.
17:49
I’m pretty sure that picture is there to have the joke of “haha, Stan’s head isn’t properly in frame”.
Omigosh, YEEEEEES. Especially now. His comics depicted the kids in the human realm are like an unofficial season 3, and they're amazing.
For your voice, try some ginger tea with honey (hoping that you're not allergic to either ginger or honey).
(And at least there are tea options; my mother used to have me pop a piece of actual ginger in my mouth like a piece of candy when I had a sore throat or coughed too much.)
I'm stoked that you're noticing the whisperings and codes. Also, pay close attention to certain episodes and background stuff. The creators of this show love to add some "fun" and informative stuff that will prove mind-blowing in the future.
Now I get the format,
Editing Elijah solves the mysteries, and there is a “how did Disney let that fly?” moment.
To be honest
I never knew this was the 2nd episode of gravity falls I thought it was like the 5th episode- (I didn't know what were each episode names and the numbers because I didn't care about It[sorry for bad grammar])
You ever think about how Rick and Morty, amphibia, owl house, and gravity falls are all connected
It's hilarious to see Elijah finding all the secrets ages after we found them. I love her enthusiasm.
I already commented this on your previous "Gravity Falls" video, but if you're looking to decode the end credit ciphers, here's a guide on what kind of ciphers are gonna be used on these episodes:
SEASON 1
- Episodes 1-6 = Caesar Cipher
- Episodes 7-13 = Atbash Cipher
- Episodes 14-20 = A1Z26 Cipher
Season 2 onwards uses the Vigenère cipher
It’s so cool seeing people watching the show for the first time and seeing them discover all the little hidden things
god experiencing this show again through these reactions is reminding me how INCREDIBLE this show was
spoiler alert for the finale episode of gravity falls :
I think the line: I'm still here in the intro is Bill Cipher telling us he didn't really die in the finale, in the finale Bill's finale words turned backwards is: A.X.O.L.T.L my time has come to burn, I envoke the ancient power that I may return, so I think Bill is still Alive and I think the i'm still here is the shows way of telling us that Bill is still alive and if that's true it means that the creator had this planned from the Start
(sorry for my bad English LOL)
1. It does say Three Letters Back. Many tidbits in the show are written in Caesar Cipher, where you roll back each letter so many places to get the actual word. Using Caesar 3, if it shows "Pdeho" it will actually be the word "Mabel."
2. In the picture of Stan, he was doing the "Napoleon Pose."
