You’re a wonderful teacher. I think many of us recall teachers from our lives who stood out as truly gifted. In addition to being experts in their field and great communicators, it was obvious that they loved teaching. You remind me of one of those teachers. As a bonus, you’re a lovely person. God bless you, Mary.

Thank you for this traditional recipe. The way I learned how to make pandowdy was to roll out my crust, place it on top, bake, and then crack the crust afterwards with a fork, which allows the bits to soak up the juice and create the effect you talk about. I believe your method will allow people to not need to use a roller, which is a nice change for beginners, similar to a galette, and super easy. I'm not a beginner, but I love learning new ways of trying old recipes. Thank you.

Tried this years ago with dry-ish older winter apples and to make up for the dryness I added a couple of splashes if apple cider didn't know it was a thing ... It worked out really well.
Hang in with MARY folks !!! You can't go wrong !!

This recipe takes me back! My parents used to buy a bushel of apples from an orchard outside of Akron, Ohio when I was growing up (1950s-1960s) and I made many apple desserts for my dad and myself when I was in High School. Pan dowdy was a favorite since it was baked in a cast iron skillet and was/is way easy to prepare. Thanks for the recipe and memories!

Thank you sweet Mary for this recipe. My mother in law (God bless her soul) made the best apple 🥧.

Shoo fly pie & apple pan dowdy,
Make your eyes light up & your stomach say howdy! Haha! Remember that from being a child here in WV. But I’ve never had apple pan dowdy. Or shoo fly pie. My mother didn’t cook much. Thank you Mary! Great video as always. I appreciate you so much!

    Hello lovely lady! :D
Thank you for this. I'm a late bloomer when it comes to cooking, didn't start to learn until my mid 30s and still have a long way to go before I'd call myself a cook.
I've wanted to make an apple pie, but was worried about the crust not turning out. Now that I've watched this I won't have to worry about it anymore. I don't think my handsome husband will care if its a pandowdy instead of a pie, it's still a nice dessert that looks very tasty. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. Have an awesome day! :D

Hi Mary, I was quite intrigued by this recipe as a "possible" dessert to serve at Thanksgiving . I did a trial run and the apples I chose were more tart than I liked ( I had some of the pie while it was still warm) . I asked my husband who is particular about his tastes, to please eat some of it, so that I could bake another one with different apples. He did not try any until much later and it had been in the refrigerator. Much to my great surprise, he raved about it and stated how good it was! I had some later too after it was cold and the flavors really came through and the top crust was unique and really good. I have made two more for my neighbors and they loved it. Now my husband wants another for us and one each for his 2 cousins. I am very pleased and amazed. He never requests desserts except an occasional all chocolate cake. Thank you!

Great video, as always! I made apple sauce recently, and since I already had apple scrap vinegar going(from your recipe) I made fruit pectin. It was super easy. It has to be kept in the fridge, and it’s a little cloudy, so I wouldn’t use it in jelly. I’m glad I know how, in case there comes a day I can’t get pectin.

One more option with the apple scraps, boil them in sugar water and let it cook down and strain it. It has natural pectin and it will make a type of apple jelly. I learned it from Christa on Prepsteaders channel.

Mary, I’d like to see you feature more vintage recipes (if needed, with a modern twist). It was a time when processed foods didn’t exist. Never heard of apple dowdy and can’t wait to make it. Going to ask my neighbour for some crabapples later in the season. I assume a rhubarb / Strawberry could work? I have a rhubarb plant that I have never harvested to bake with. Going to try it.

Just noticed all your counters are full. Just like me! It drives me crazy sometimes with all the stuff, but I’m a gadget girl. Love gadgets!!! I have a nice size kitchen but between me and my husband, there is no hope. LOL

    Hi Mary,
Excellent video as usual. Do you have a shoo fly pie video also? I have heard that it goes with apple pan dowdy pretty well.

Arrowroot powder could also be an alternative to cornstarch.

This looks delicious! If I want to use my home canned apples (in light syrup) how many pints or quarts would I need?

Oh my, it looks delicious! It reminds me of a hot apple bowl! I'm def going to make this. May I ask how deep your cast iron skillet is?

Hi Barb, it’s a typical 10” Lodge Cast Iron Skillet…maybe 2” deep. Love, Mary ❤️🤗❤️

Dear Mary, this looks delicious. I’m not a pie maker/baker but could handle this. I dehydrated apple slices that no one like-eats. Could I use these? Thank you in advance!

And could I use something like maple syrup, or would I need to get maple sugar? I'm sensitive to acne sugar.... I could use honey if you know conversion on that easier. Thank you!

Maple syrup or honey would work for the apples. Just leave the sugar out of the crust. The topping might work best with maple sugar. Love, Mary
