@@dogcrazy25what do u mean could it?😂bruh u just watched an entire video where they talked about how it’s an addiction. Did u just comment without watching?
The top income streamers on twitch are actually men. They get rich because of “whales” (Big Spenders in the gaming world) like this caller. People also get addicted trying to outspend other whales. This type of addiction doesn’t get much attention because of the same reaction you see in this video that it is hard to believe that people actually waste money like this. That is why it is so hard to get help.
The thumbnail is just wrong. You can spend $50,000 on video games, that's usually a case where the game has pay to win mechanics or lots of microtransactions. Gifting subscriptions on twitch is more akin to being like: "I spent $50,000 on rounds of drinks at a sports bar."; you wouldn't call that spending $50,000 on sports.
@@thomasdalton1508 Just take a look at the comments here, people think it must be OF when in reality he probably really was giving subscriptions to random people on twitch.

I certainly believe this story, I’ve seen so many people gifting subs on UA-cam and Twitch that I always ask myself how can they afford to do this? It’s that dopamine hit for them.
I definitely believe it. I’ve even done gifties for a streamer occasionally but I think the most I ever did was 10 at a time during a subathon. It was fun. Usually, I have done a few here and there. Not very regularly. But, man, I can’t imagine maxing out credit cards to keep that rush coming. 😮
He was probably known as the “rich dude” in the chat. A lot of twitch streamers have one. Usually some software engineer or someone that has a ton of time and money to watch twitch all day and drop donations like its nothing because they’re rich. Obviously this man is not rich but wanted to keep up the persona and its led to him ruining his life. Ive seen it happen before with my own father however it wasn’t with twitch.
Exactly what I was going to post. Some of my favorite twitch channels are smaller, averaging 100-300 people a day and you get some people thinking it's their duty to keep the channel alive for their "friends" the streamer and chat.
It’s incredibly easy to fall into this if you’re not disciplined. Chat and the streamer does go crazy and it makes you feel so excited! The entire chat praises you, it’s such a dopamine hit

If you spend $192/stream on a streamer who streams 5 days a week for a year, that is $50k. They might find this hard to believe but the parasocial relationships with streamers and communities is crazy and gives a similar escape that booze or an affair might.
Yeah I think the hosts and many of the commenters don't really understand the format. I've watched streams where people will send $500 and the streamer will acknowledge them by name and then read whatever message the person paying sent. That can easily add up. Even on tiktok, if you go to very popular tiktok lives, people will be constantly sending gifts, some of which can be worth up to around $500. It is very believable that someone who frequently engages in this activity could unwittingly spend thousands upon thousands of dollars.
I agree. Idk why they have a hard time believing this. 1k/week is easy to blow through, really. I used to work at bars and clubs and a lot of the men who would come in there were similarly addicted and destroying their finances. They were willing to go through a few hundred bucks in an afternoon so they could have a bouncer dap them up and a bartender greet them by name. The feeling of having a community is something we all yearn for, we just need to figure out how to channel it appropriately.
@@brookiegremlin6660 exactly. I mean to them and to many commenters, this kind of behavior is unfathomable and it just doesnt make any sense. But people literally throw their money down the drain while getting what normal people see as absolutely nothing in return
I believe this guy. I watch Twitch (a lot less than I used to) and when someone drops 100 subs, the streamer goes wild, the chat goes wild etc.. It can be exciting but you won't find me doing this. I watch this one streamer, she has someone in her chat that has gifted (over time) 1941 subs to other viewers. That's $9500+ and that is just to one streamer.. who knows how many subs they've gifted in other channels.
it's not as hard to imagine as you think. Look at all the people out there who spend that kind of money on cars they can't afford. Or people who buy luxury brand clothing/accessories. You think they're just buying it for the quality? No it's to get attention from strangers.
As someone that goes through heavy gaming bouts, i never understand the people that give streamers money. It makes no sense, why the hell would i give any of these talentless people any money.
Because for those few minutes the streamer and chat recognize the donator... they feel like they actually matter. Most of these people are very lonely inviduals who use this as a tool to get some, well... value of their sad life. The higher donation or amount of gifted subs.. the more hype they get. A few minutes later is all gone and they just keep doing it for the dopamin hit.
@@RippanYT Very true. The adulation they get from chat, seeing their username repeated as a solid block of text as the chat bot lists their subscriptions, the hype from the streamer, it's all a very convincing counterfeit for human connection...until the high wears off and you realize the loneliness never went away. Very bad look for John to insist he doesn't believe him. People spend money on all kinds of stupid things, the guy is owning up to it, and he is trying to fix it. I watch twitch sometimes and I see dummies dropping $500 every week on their favorite streamers and more. It definitely is happening, and it's not just people who can afford it.
That's because they aren't in touch with the culture. "I've been in this business a long time, you're lying!" Just because he hasn't seen it doesn't mean in does not exist.
I agree, and I was disappointed in how John acted like it was impossible for the guy’s story to be true. I’ve never watched people on Twitch, but as a gamer myself, I’ve watched people play online through UA-cam, and it is quite enjoyable. Especially if it’s a game you love playing yourself.
Actually, it's a very bad look for the caller. John is basically saying, "I've seen countless drug addicts, gambling addicts, porn addicts, and alcoholics". However this sounds so pathetic I can't even believe it is real.
@people3865 it's not good or bad. Can you grasp that most commerce is amoral? Bad for the addict, good for the house. Again, efficient flow of capital. Should we make all gambling illegal?
This is why BOTH people in a marriage should know where every dime is located. BOTH people should know exactly what income is coming into the household and exactly what is being spent and where. I see this and wonder how they afford it. I watch a twitch streamer where a watcher drops 50 Tier 1 subs multiple times each stream. I googled it and that’s about $500 a pop. I agree with another poster. I think they get a high off the drop and the acknowledgment.

Y'all are doing this dude a disservice by putting him on the air, he's getting off on this.
There's also the attention he gets from the people he gave subs to. Can't forget that. It's similar to going into a bar and paying for the next round - everybody loves you, for about 10 minutes.

In the up coming years youll see in game purchases for video games get out of control too. I knew someone with an addiction to mobile game purchases. They spent thousands before she stopped.
He has to start by being honest with himself. There is no way that even the biggest gamer is spending $50k on a gamer. This has to be like onlyfans or some kind of private chat or something. Nobody is doing that because they are watching someone play a video game. People that play games spend that on actually playing the games not watching.
Watching Twitch isn't gaming. Being a big gamer has nothing at all to do with it. There are certainly people that gift 100 subs every stream. You do that twice a week for a year, that's $50,000. I watch streams sometimes and see it all the time. I often wonder why someone rich enough to do that wants to do it. It hadn't occurred to me that they might be going $50,000 in debt to do it...
Streamers encourage this behavior. One I follow used to have a leader board showing his biggest supporters and had multiple people over $20,000 in lifetime donations.
I know we're supposed to be kind to other people and all, but this may be the dumbest thing I've ever heard someone (who wasn't extremely wealthy) spend this amount of money on. At least if you're gambling you have a chance of getting something back. He literally just threw money into a void. When I think of everything I could spend $50,000 on and how many years it would take me to save up that much money... I just can't even wrap my head around it.
There are lots of streamers who have multiple people donating hundreds of dollars per stream. I could see how some of those regular donators could be donating irresponsibly like this. And I'm talking about YT and Twitch streams
I hope that dude has a officer's salary. $50,000 worth of credit card debt with a "good" interest rate of 18% comes out to a minimum monthly payment of $1250. Dude, that's like paying rent!
I see all the comments saying "it's not video games, it's Only Fans!" And while that's definitely possible, video game addiction (or at least dependency) is very real. And really, it doesn't matter whether it's video games or OF. Either way, it's a compulsive behavior and the consequences and potential treatments are very similar.
My daughter streams on twitch. She plays Paper Mario and Mario Cart. She says this happens all the time. People gifting hundreds of dollars for subs. It happens frequently.
Nah, it’s not BS. There are many people like this caller. Just watch any popular streams on twitch and you will see many people gifting subscriptions to the viewers and money donations to the streamer.
John is out of touch with Internet and Streaming culture. I see people drop thousands all the time on streamers. I just assume they're millionaires or rich as f.
I think you and they are flat-out wrong. I wandering over to Twitch after this for an hour or two and saw some people gifting 100 subs to the first random streamers I looked at. The subs were $5.99. So they were dropping $600 on some guy playing a FPS. All he'd need to do is do that 90 times in a YEAR and he'd reach the 50k.
I thought it would be loot boxes/microtransactions. That's so much worse! He's spending tens of thousands of dollars just to look like a big shot in chat for a few minutes.
I've seen people doing that on Twitch, donating like $1000 all at once. I just figured they're rich, I never thought it might be an addiction problem...

Indeed. It's odd for a social media manager to be so out of touch with what Twitch is...
@@thomasdalton1508 Just take a look at the comments here, people think it must be OF when in reality he probably really was giving subscriptions to random people on twitch.
