  • The geopolitical contest between China and the U.S. will shape the world over the next few decades. It is a simultaneously inevitable and avoidable dynamic, the result of a rising China, poor communication between the two, and little natural empathy. What are the structural forces driving this contest? What mistakes did both sides make? And what are the potential solutions? These questions will be answered on September 29th, 2020 at 7 PM ET by Prof. Kishore Mahbubani, a diplomat and scholar with unrivaled access to policymakers in Beijing and Washington. He was twice Singapore’s Ambassador to the UN and also former President of the United Nations Security Council (Jan 2001 and May 2002).

Kishore, you're a brilliant treasure to the world, but a key point about the American govt you may not want to admit is, in contrary to the Chinese government who tries hard to lift all Chinese people our of poverty and make all Chinese people live a better life, American govt doesn't care how ordinary Americans live. The American leaders don't know how to live their life without bullying and plundering other countries.

Unfortunately, those bipartisan American politicians are very determinate to maintain their global supremacy rather than caring for the welfare of American people. The administration in Washington D.C. endeavours in all possible means perhaps to terminate more than to contain the newly emerging power of China. Hence, the geopolitical contest leading to a clash between the two superpowers seems to be inevitable and finally explodes to something. A pessimistic scenario is that at least a regional war might break out unless the US navy halts its provocation in the South China Sea.

You're smoking crack. American or UK governments make China's look like an angel blessed upon this Earth. You don't have human rights when you're colonized, enslaved, or genocided. The West is unmatched, peerless, in those endeavors and save some bullshit China-is-imperialist argument. No need to project the degeneracy of other governments to China which you hate because it's strong.
India and China can have good relations within the blink of an eye. Media, indoctrination, soft power, etc. are fickle like that. Once India is strong enough to break free from the grip of American meddling and intervention and able to see how clear it is that good relations with China incomparably more beneficial to its own interests than anyone else, all the enmity can be erased within a few decades. The world is better off being more multipolar and a weakened West. Chin up, broseph.

    Historical Facts:
Those small islands in South China Sea (SCS) were occupied by Chinese fishermen centuries ago long before Admiral Cheng He started 7 voyages in year 1405 & 1433. As for the 9 dash lines, it was originally 11 dash lines drawn when the Republic of China (ROC) was established in 1912 by Kuomintang Party led by Dr Sun Yet Sen. Under ROC, an official map was published to include all the small islands in SCS as China's territories which was then recognized by all the major powers / colonial powers in the region. In fact USA sent it's army to assist ROC to reclaim back all these islands occupied by the Japanese Imperial Army after WW2. When the People's Republic of China (PRC) was formed in 1949 by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) led by Mao Tze Tong, it amended to 9 dash lines ie. to exclude some islands in front Vietnam coast as a gesture of goodwill when North Vietnam was formed by the Communist Party of Vietnam led by Ho Chi Minh.
In that era, most countries in South East Asia (SEA) were colonized by western powers (Britain, Spain, French, USA, Holland, Portuguese etc) & those small islands in SCS were not part of the colonized territories. So when countries in SEA gained independence & new countries were formed (eg. Malaysia. Brunei), they inherited the territories of their colonial masters which does not include the small islands in SCS. When China was weak & unable to protect these islands, countries around the SCS started to occupy these small islands & lay claim as theirs.

@ L V, in addition to your historical facts which I know is true, after the Japanese surrendered in WW2, China's claim to SCS is recognized in a legal document, sorry I forgot the name, as one of many terms for the surrender. This legal document was then further reiterated in another legal document later on, again I forgot the name this legal document. There are at least three legal documents reiterating China's claim of the SCS, with USA supporting them. I can vaguely remember the name of the 2nd and 3rd legal documents "San Francisco" and "Eygpt" as part of the name.

    *Repost to Share.*
*All Chinese, especially the overseas Chinese, should read this article.*
    *THE OPPRESSION OF A CIVILIZATION:*
*The world was turned into an ocean of colonies of subject people during the few centuries of ‘friendly’ European conquest. The Africans were turned into slaves, the natives of both Americas massacred. The ancient civilization of China was crippled and dismantled into pieces. After the Western powers brought down the decadent Qing Dynasty with the might of modern firearms, the Chinese civilization was turned into a pariah race of nothingness by the invaders in their country. The foreigners did not bring anything good but oppression, bullying and raiding China ’s wealth and dignity by all kinds of deceptive means, and by the barrel of the gun. The Japanese joined in and even thought of conquering and ruling the whole of China as their colony.*
*There was a moment of salvation when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and declared war on the Western power. China and its peasant soldiers were needed to open another front to sap the fighting power and resources of the Japanese. A large part of the Japanese Imperial Army was held down in China by the peasant soldiers. History would not be the same if the Japanese could run through China without resistance and conquer the whole of Asia.*
*After the war there was a brief moment of equality for China as a key member of the Allied Forces that fought against the Japanese. Chiang Kai Shek was seated with the Allied leaders like Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt in Potsdam and Cairo to divide the world among the victorious Allied Powers. China was lucky to have its lost territories back. Chiang was more like a flower vase, inconsequential, and would not be deserving of any war loot. His presence among the leaders of the big powers was a consolation that gave China a little recognition as a big nation.*
*This little moment of dignity did not last long when Mao Zedong defeated Chiang and China adopted communism as a state ideology. This turn of event led to a renewed and concerted Western effort to brand and condemn the Chinese civilization as peasants, rogues, dumb, uncivilized, aggressive and the pariahs of the human race, a good for nothing race that was lack of talent, unproductive and unimaginative, and unfit to join the advanced nations of the West. This was the hopeless China painted by the West. They kept repeating the misinformation daily in all western media, like they are doing to North Korea today that the whole world simply believed so. Chinese are useless, Chinese are lame, Chinese are bad.*
*Cold Wars, containment policies, encirclement, depriving China of its rightful seat in the UN, blocking China from joining international organizations like the WTO and the Groupings of rich nations, were history now. In the last 40 odd years, China came storming back on its own despite all the sanctions and barriers and threats against its rise as a nation and the Chinese people as a civilization, old, ancient, but not useless and remote of talents.*
*Throughout the two hundred years of Western oppression and suppression, the Chinese civilization was not allowed to surface, no opportunity to break out and be the equals of other nations. The Chinese civilization was down and out, the Chinese in despair. Many Chinese had doubts in themselves, and were ashamed to be Chinese. The Westerners reinforced this belief by sneering at them, contributing negative literature furiously to debase the Chinese, discriminated against them in practically every human endeavour and industry. In the USA there were racist laws forbidding the Chinese from higher skill jobs. The image and perception of useless and untalented Chinese became a self fulfilling prophecy. The Chinese civilization was a joke, a condemned race that was lacking in industry and innovation.*
*On its own, slowly and steadily the Chinese rebuilt their nation and their civilization, with little foreign talents and assistance, China has overtaken Japan and is closing in on the US as the number Two world power, economically and militarily. They have proven that they could match the West in every field of industry. The oppression and suppression of a civilization have failed, and a revitalized China has assumed its rightful place as a proud nation among nations. The Chinese civilization is no longer to be spitted at, to be kicked around by the Western powers or by teeny weeny little Asian states. It is now a force to be reckoned with and to be respected on its own merits.*
*The tag of being the Sick Man of Asia, a semi colony of the West, a broken country with nothing, no inventions, no modern industries, no talents except poverty and all the trappings of a poor and backward third world country vanished over a few decades. There is renewed pride as a people, a nation and a civilization in the new China . A phoenix has risen from the ashes. There is no turning back. The Chinese have found their way back and will leap frog over the West in science and technology and in all things, while the West are still trying to restrain their advances by hook and by crook.*
*Today, the overseas Chinese are also starting to rediscover themselves, their pride and dignity as a respectable people. They too find some renewed confidence that they are not rubbish and useless as the West wanted to hole them in, to be bullied by even little third world people, to be told to go home in western countries. They too share the pride of an ancient civilization seeking a second chance in renaissance, to achieve in whatever they seek to do, to be a respectable people and civilization on par with the best in the world. They no longer lower their heads in shame as they go about their lives. They are standing tall, heads and shoulders to the Western civilization with the knowledge that they are just as good if not better. The Chinese civilization is reviving and will no longer be oppressed and suppressed again.*
*We can all benefit from a short history lesson of mankind and their actions on earth and the generations to come!*

I think we should let the tensions run its course.
Eventually it will die down when the US finally comes to terms with a changed world.
Americans can be quite greedy and self-centered but they're relatively very pragmatic... no matter the rhetoric and muscle flexing, the US wants to keep a working relationship with China because they benefit a lot from it.
At the moment, it's just many people have a hard time understanding and trying to adjust to a changing world, with China being a big part of it. Nobody wants to be left behind or feel detached from the beliefs they grew up with. There's also the issue of balancing the interests of the elites and needs of the general population with US-China relations, but that's a very complicated affair.
To sum it up, it's been a few centuries where the West was dominant, so no one has any living experiences and memories of a time when a non-Western entity like China was big on the world state. So, just give it some time for people to accept the new reality.

Kishore said China and US won't go to war because both sides and the world would lose. However, he later said that the situation is being driven by "irrational forces."
It is these irrational forces that worry me. A skirmish may begin somewhere, say, in the SCS, and "emotions" and irrational forces may escalate the confrontation to all-out war. So I don't think Graham Allison is necessarily wrong.

Look at the two World Wars. It made the U.S. (and WWII, for the Soviet Union as well) superpower(s). Wars make power, keeps power, projects power. And the U.S. is good at it.

Several world leaders have written about the emergence of China in economic terms. A few countries have tested China's military resolve. What seems absent from many comparisons is the power dynamic in the US vs the power dynamic of The People's Republic of China. If we consider that American power is really the political arm of corporate billionaire power in America, rather than the political facade of rigged democratic processes, then it is possible to begin to change that dynamic. American billionaires do not have a problem with the denial of aid to millions of Americans who are unemployed. American billionaires do not care whether 300,000 or 3,000,000 Americans die from Covid19. That is why most of the trillions spent thus far go to corporations, not to the rest of us.
Prior to Covid 19 homelessness was increasing. People who lost their homes in 2008 were not able to recover. Wages have not increased since 1960. Income inequality has never been worse. Yet billionaires have had tremendous gains from their businesses in China and other countries. The emergence of China to some extent was due to the outsourcing of our jobs to China. The only difference between China and The US is that China distributed some of its gains to elevate 850 million people from extreme poverty. Our billionaires used their gains to enrich themselves at our expense.
There definitely is a need to discuss great power rivalry. But, as Americans, we need to discuss why America no longer fulfills the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The answer is that the American People have lost their country to billionaires who control everything. It is time for us to take our country back! WHEN TYRANNY IS LAW REVOLUTION IS ORDER!!

I became afraid when he used the words "historical aberation and all aberation comes to end". Many will then claim colonization of South East Asia by western powers was an historical aberation and the former powers of South East Asia will try to claim the lands they lost when they were weak and the western powers land acquisition was done unlawfully. China claim of SCS set a precedents for Indonesia and Siam to claim their old territories. Singapore may be an aberation coming to an end if China succeeds in its historical claim of SCS. Singapore must exibit the same gumption for the SCS issue it had when it lead ASEAN in the UN to oppose Vietnamese occuptaion of Cambodia in 1980s.

Prof Kishore mentioned a principle of China's success in bringing a Quantum leap practically proven not by mere talk in the living standards and the economy of China in 30 over years.
    Professor Keisha said,
    " The West is
" open" with a CLOSED mind.
China was "closed" with an OPEN MIND.
One of the main keys is HUMILITY.
    1. When one is humble then we can continuously learn and remain teachable.
    ( it's not one-sided)
    2. We will definitely stop progressing and infect re-gress, if we think we know it all and if our minds are not open to learn from others.
    3. 30 + years ago, the leadership in China RECOGNISED the problems and SETBACKS they had.
They solved the problems because the leadership and and the people COURAGEOUSLY & humbly ACKNOWLEDGED that the problems did exist and set their hearts and vision to solve them progressively to work towards turning everything around to bring the desired results that will benefit all the people.
    China most successful
    " Communist" yet not really
    " communist" system.
It is proven with excellent results in the past 30 years that the MAIN CONCERN of the LEADERSHIP what's not to propagate their "branding " & ideology whether democracy or communism because they've already had the REVELATION 30 + years ago that the ideology alone will not create jobs, will not put food on the table and and give the people a better life.
To them the sign board of
" communism" but is not the priority anymore but the quality of the lives of the people at all levels of society and the progress of their country.
Empirically, we can say that this was derived from a SIMPLE but famous saying by Deng Xiao Ping depicting WHAT WORKS is more important and should be prioritized.
Mr Deng said, " 黑猫白猫, 会抓老鼠的猫就是好猫。
👆🏻 What Mr Deng is saying metaphorically that whether it's a black cat or white cat ( in today's language.... WHO CARES ? ),
The cat that is PROFICIENT in catching mice ( effectively) is a good cat.
I can see that Singapore like China HAS APPLIED this PRINCIPLE and put it to practice, (NOT by just merely identifying the problems and thinking that they are changed and the problems is solved)
But by humbly acknowledging the issues have progressed in a Quantum way and has never look back.
👆🏻By the way A famous Western author Edwin Cole once said,
" Your INTENT to change DOES NOT MEAN that you are ALREADY CHANGED "
Hence this is ONE of the greatest mistakes that can happen to an individual, company and even a country or a superpower
Like I shared earlier, China was successful, most probably because they were more willing & humble and more HONEST TO THEMSELVES that something was wrong and they need to fix it.
    Plus they decided
stop " passing the buck around ", "( An American saying always blaming others except themselves) facing reality.
    And they didn't stop there.
They actually planned together the possibile solutions, got to work on it, set some time frame for activation and did it some fine-tuning and correcting some areas along the way
( they didn't plan themselves to
    " death " statically)
to achieve the best possible results.

I have a serious question for Kishore: if u r advocating for a powerful UN (Sec-Gen), what safeguards would u suggest to counter “bad actor” countries lobbying/influencing selection of the SG in their favour? We are already seeing this happen. For one thing China’s Budget for this is opaque whereas it is practically impossible (and illegal) for democracies like US and Singapore to incorporate bribery into their national budgets. This is analogous to turning up for a gunfight with a knife.

Mahbubani actually speaks Singlish (real Cambridge English use by local Cambridge people) like LKY, that is simple and easy to understand, instead of India-Indish or fake US-accents many speakers like to use.
LKY had once admonished Singaporean not to fake American accent & use bombastic English, just speak simple standard English, as he found that's most effective to communicate with his global audiences, including world leaders. And people respect him for that, also on the quality of the contents.

It's part of the American culture to point finger first before resolving or even solving the problem. It's in the gene of the people. No matter if they're government officials or people from private organizations. They only care about their images, status, and title more than the well being of their citizens or their employees. It will use everything within it's power to retain it's status and title even if it has to sacrifice human lives by sending US troops to start an unnecessary war with China. Fighting unnecessary wars like the Korean war, Vietnam war and the war in the Middle East is the greatest example of sacrificing American lives. What's their purpose of making this sacrifice? The land of the free is not being invaded.

    In terms of SCS :
The whole issue with the SCS and Islet building kicked off because US was seen as an unreliable broker when it came to the Senkaku/Diaoyu dispute. Japan decided to nationalised those disputed Islands claimed by China and ROC as well.
As a result, China decided to establish facts on the ground in its stake in the SCS.
As prof Mahbubani mentioned, China was not the first to build airstrips and expand these islets.
Philippines built them in the 70s, Vietnam in the 80s and then Malaysia in the 90s.
China is a late comer to this game but one with very much greater resources.
BUT as we all know the US likes to call Freedom of navigation when most of the trade going through the SCS is from or to China. It is in China's interest to maintain Freedom of Navigation.
Lets also remember that as many have posted the 9 dash line is more likely an antecedent issue from what China had inherited from the ROC 12 dash line claim and one it will likely keep as a negotiating gambit. The fact that Xi extended to discuss the SCS with Obama should give indication that beyond bluster, China is willing to make compromise with other claimant states.
BUT US involvement once sought as a make weight has now become a spoiler complicating issues. US believes it has moral ground to be the White knight in shining armour when most countries in the region sees it as a growing problem nor is the covid19 track record or current WH regime's inability to hold to treaties (Like with Iran on the Nuclear deal) inspiring confidence.
US on the other hand with its proxy the UK have quashed the wishes (VERY RECENTLY) of the Island inhabitants of Diego Garcia to de-militarize their Island. This is an actual inhabited Island that BOTH UK and the US who like to pontificate on China have acted with utmost disdain against the decisions of the local population.
There are also other poor examples scattered across the Pacific of US bullying (genocide in fact) of local populace including the John Pilger documented treatment of Bikini Islanders subject to radiation testing.
Unfortunately, Western media prefer to selectively fill the echo chamber in the West with selective viewing through its own culturally colonial lens on these issues rather than also state these inconvenient truths.
The NYT would never have Prof Mahbubani on because it conflicts the message they prefer to put out. That's the state of open mindedness in the Western world for you these days.

A 4000 year old Civilization must understand that in 2020
would serve its hegemony by partnering with global nations but not to go for expansionism by occupying 56 % of other peoples land. There is no option but to check expansionism by the free world and bring freedom to the suffering people of Taiwan and the other two occupied regions.

China needs to be able to defend themselves, I support both America and China to be #1. USA will most likely be the military dominant player because of their influence and military bases in the world. China is the economic super power as always throughout history. China just wants to defend themselves, and develop their country while America wants to try and push down competition.

I watched China Grow from a Poverty ridden country into what I see to be Superior Country when I compare the Country’s Infrastructure, It’s Health Care, it’s quality of product, China’s Workers are more productive, China Hi Tech Growth has already beyond USA. I am certain that China is unbeatable. America has committed Suicide by Printing so much DEBT. China has managed already beyond Broken

To be honest as Chinese, we still looked up to US back in Feb and hoped to learn from US on how to tackle the pandemic better. We knew shutting down the country was suppose to be only a last resort, and it was a poor way to handle it. Sadly what we see by now is it seems like it's the only way to handle this new disease.

Sorry I wasn't a follower, youtube just put this in the playlist for me. But I must point out the opinion: "US and CN should work together in fighting Wuhan Virus" is total rubbish. Who is delaying(if not prohibiting) WHO in publishing and warning the world about the virus? Who is sending their virus-carrying citizens to the world to spread the virus while they lock down their provinces? Standing in the ivory tower talking about what ppl should do without looking at such important facts is no helping at all. As a Hongkongers we have very first hand news about how horrible it is in Wuhan from last Dec. What we do is to disbelief the #CCPChina government and set out to find masks and alcohol wipes. Ignoring that fact will blind your judgement and thus what come out from your mouth is kind of meaningless.
However you are right about #CCPChina no longer a Communism party. Instead of capitalism it's going the dictatorship direction.

America's LUST to continue its global dominance, is it's aim to keep its 2% wealthy elites growing in their wealth, keeping their political elites in greed and power and their bottom 50% population in misery. China's AMBITION to grow in global dominance is on the contrary; to lift their poor out of misery and poverty. So, which country has their population's well being at heart?

I think LV wants to patronize China. No issue. However we have to follow the principle Live and let live and allow the small countries to survive. China has such a big land all acquired from Tibet, Mongolia, Manchria etc. Still they want more land, other's rights, and are raking up ownership based on ancient dynasty. If they have progressed materially, i feel there should be progress in thoghts also.
In this video there were discussions about how an American has to live, etc. Basically if there is going to be a threat from terrorists and irredpinsible nations who wants nukes development against USA, i think the president has to address that on priority. Hence people and media should talk reality and should not be influenced by propaganda and politics.

In a democratic system like America, it's difficult for a politician to create policies to take care of the welfare of all citizens in a short term period of eight years to achieve. The safest route are to take care of the top and rotting the bottom with full pledge freedom gor them to indulge in! At the end, achieving virtual satisfaction on both sides q with hidden Social Danger,!
