Wow, I haven't seen anyone else here on YT react to this amazing murder mystery with a twist! So glad you did this. Something else you should check out on your own time - SHATTERED (1991) - totally mind-bending mystery with one of the greatest reveals since Roxxy Andrews. ;)

You win the internet for the RA reference! I agree, this is one of my favorite suspense films- when I first saw it, it blew me away, I did not see that twist coming. I feel like it's kind of an underrated gem, it was pretty popular in its time, but people seem to have forgotten about it.

When I met Robin I asked him about his part in this film. He was very surprised because most people ask him about Mrs. Doubtfire or one of his well know films. He told me he did it as a favor for his friend Kenneth. He remembered how cold it was to film in that meat freezer. Shot all his scenes in one day and got paid scale like any other actor.

  • @Rmlohner

This film is one of my favorites in pointing out how movies can be changed during production for the better.
-Scott Frank had no intention while writing the script that both sets of reincarnations would be played by the same actors (if you were wondering why the resemblance is hardly ever commented on, there you go). It was Branagh who came up with the idea after coming on board, which saved a pair of paychecks and also makes it a lot harder to see the gender swap twist coming.
-The original script also didn't have Amanda be stricken mute in the first half hour. But since the very nature of the story meant that she had nothing to contribute to those scenes beyond endlessly saying she didn't remember anything, it was decided she might as well not talk at all until the regressions into her past life started. Which of course just increases the intrigue in those early scenes of what the hell is up with her.
-The entire film was shot in color, but test audiences commonly complained about being confused over which scenes were set in the past or the present (you'd think Branagh and Thompson's hairstyles would be a pretty big clue, but I guess not). So Branagh just took out all the color from the past scenes, giving the film a very striking and unique look perfectly in keeping with his operatic directing style.

Also loved the scene where Roman reads Margaret's hand and tells her future, and the corresponding scene where Mike tells Grace her past. Always loved those scenes! Derek Jacobi first came to big attention playing the lead role in the classic miniseries I, Claudius, playing a character with a bad stutter. So it was a bit of an inside joke for him to take a role in this film as someone who stuttered as a child but overcame it, but then relapses at the end. And this wouldn't be the last time Branagh made this kind of sly wink to Jacobi's big break, as he was also cast in Branagh's uncut four hour adaptation of Hamlet as...Claudius!

I remember seeing this in theaters, and I've always wondered why it doesn't get constant replay on cable TV or premium channels, at least as much as you would think it should, given its star power and overall super-engaging storyline and excellent writing and direction, so I'm really glad you saw this and reacted and especially that you liked it so much! It's a seriously slept-on gem from the early 90s. I think it's a great example of neo-noir but the black and white sequences give it an air of being original film noir! Plus I really dig Kenneth Branagh's American accent; it's one of the few times he's actually done one, and he's great at it.
I know you probably don't take many suggestions about movies to react to from your UA-cam comments, but I'm gonna suggest one anyway. Since this is a Branagh movie, I recommend you see and react to another movie he did (just as an actor, though, in a supporting role) - 2008's VALKYRIE, with Tom Cruise and featuring a solid ensemble cast of mostly British actors in the true story of the nearly-successful attempted assassination and coup d'etat against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime during World War II. I think it's a super-engaging wartime thriller that hasn't gotten much attention from the other UA-cam reaction video content creators, so hopefully, if you watch and react to it, you could start a little trend!

  • @gailjohnston1248

What an awesome movie to react to! I remember getting excited to see it whenever the trailers would come on TV. I really love a good murder mystery but then you toss in the reincarnation factor and it just shoots it way up! I think it's the only movie that's ever done it before or since. And the whole small role by RW, no one knew he was even in it until you saw the movie! Grant you I wasn't fond of angry RW's character in this but I did love the segment ( not that it was shown in your video...) where he kinda explains how Reincarnation probably works to KB. It's been quite awhile since I last watched this movie even though it was a favorite of mine. As I'm sure ppl have probably mentioned- Kenneth and Emma were married for some time before making this film. They've done other movies together, most would be British based. And Grant you , I haven't ever been one much for Shakespeare's works, but when I first watched- Much Ado about Nothing, I really loved it, as KB just made it easier to understand. Oh and KB...directed- Thor btw.😁
The actor who played the fake Bf to Emma's character, he's what I call a Legacy actor. As in one or both parents were/ are known actors. In his case both: Dad was George C. Scott and his Mom was- Colleen Dewhurst. I really liked his Mom, watched her in a few things ages ago. She was a firecracker lol, and had just the best laugh!
Glad you enjoyed the movie Sam! 😊

Honestly I don't think that question really needs to be answered because it adds to the mysticism of what appears to be a detective story and imagine the mugging brought back the assault of the past and because she was tied between to eras her memory couldn't find its way back to the present and her voice went with it because what does a person say in that predicament? The score by Patrick Doyle in this is tremendous I think.

  • @mersmyth5280
    @mersmyth5280 2 роки тому +10

To answer your question: Presumably Grace/Amanda"s memory loss was triggered by being mugged. There's no detail, but perhaps her mugger had a knife or even scissors? She seemed ok at first but later that night was found trying to get into the convent, which I don't know if you noticed was actually Roman and Margaret's former home (the iron gate with the musical treble clef on it). One supposes that she went to sleep and then her past life memories were fully triggered. And although she wasn't the one murdered, she definitely had past life trauma: first Roman finding his wife brutally murdered in their bed, and then being found guilty and executed for her murder. And now also you see why Mike Church had an anger problem. He tells Grace in the beginning that in his youth he was always angry and fighting and the priest helped turn him around. Well that's obvious because he was the one violently attacked and murdered. Fun review, thanks. I just love this movie but not a lot of people even know about it.

    • @SusanSloate
      @SusanSloate 2 роки тому +1

And you'll noticed the first words Grace spoke when she COULD speak (under hypnosis) were, "Somebody help me!" These were the exact words Roman cried out when he found Margaret's body... The more you watch this film, the more of these details you see... just like Roman's kissing Gray Baker just before his execution was meant to be reminiscent of Judas kissing Jesus. Very chilling stuff.

This one's connection to other films you've seen is unfortunately a bit uncomfortable. Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson were married at the time, which very much comes through in the scenes of both couples falling in love. Unfortunately, they later split up after Branagh cheated, and Thompson put that feeling of betrayal to use while playing the scene in Love Actually where Karen finds the truth about the necklace.

There's quite a lot of foreshadowing you can catch in repeat viewings:
-Franklyn chokes on his drink when Amanda first mentions Roman and Margaret, confirming his suspicions about her.
-Amanda is drawn to a piano, because she was a composer on one in her past life (with a nice trick of a flashback to Margaret trying it out to throw us off).
-Margaret asks Grey about baseball, after he said that's the kind of thing men talk about.
-Mike leaves a message for Grey, and asks that he be told it's from Margaret. It really is!

This brings up fond memories of watching it in the movie theater (I saw it more than once) and the entertaining reactions of theater audiences during the last 30 minutes or so. LOL! It's an underrated gem with a cast of heavy hitters-Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Andy Garcia, Robin Williams, and (last but most definitely not least) Sir Derek Jacobi.
I wholeheartedly endorse the suggestion of reacting to Branagh's 1993 film "Much Ado About Nothing." It's a lot of fun. Not only was it critically well received, but it was also one of the few Shakespearean films that played well with mainstream audiences. If you were surprised to see Robin Williams turn up in this one, that's nothing compared to all the big names/famous faces making up the main cast of "Much Ado." 😉

When Kenneth Branagh started making movies, they were mostly adaptations of Shakespeare plays (e.g. _Henry V_ and _Much Ado About Nothing_ ) with himself as the lead, Emma Thompson as his love interest, and many of his theatre buddies (Derek Jacobi, Richard Briers, Brian Blessed, etc.) in other prominent roles. You can see a touch of that in _Dead Again_ with Mike, Grace, and Franklin, even if most of the rest of the cast were more Hollywood types.

But after the mugging she lost her memory which started her journey, it was fated to happen because they loved each other so much that through time & space they would find their way back to each other( like the karma Robin Williams character was talking about.. Our little boy Freddie there ..now grown up (played by the awesome actor
Derek Jacobi) obviously knew the truth & when he saw the connection these 2 had got worried and hired an actor just to get them apart to confuse her more. Ah maybe it's just my romantic view of love that can never be lost & I really liked the actors been a fan ever since, was sad that they parted irl. Kenneth's ' Wallander ' was such a good series. Oh well I really liked this movie & was glad you got into it. I respect your opinions & 2 be fair movies are much faster moving along now.. this movie was 30 years ago. Thank you✌️

It was largely because it never showed up on the lists of Robin Williams movies, I'm guessing because it's such a small role.

yes a small role but so memorable. He totally linked the plot together plus well aah...Robin Williams. So small role but important also he was uncredited so he was a surprise to audience. Not sure if he's listed now I'll have to look it up. Anyway thanks for suggesting this to our host. Awesome memories. ✌️

It's actually quite different from Patrick Doyle's usual work, which tends to be more subtle and/or heroic while this music is like a first cousin to Psycho. I guess Branagh just brings out the opera writer in him.

Fun yet sad fact that Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh were married at the time and divorced after he had an affair with Helena Bonham Carter. When she acted out in the bedroom finding out her husband had been unfaithful in Love Actually she was thinking about Branagh’s affair.

I was very surprised to see this on here -I love the film, but almost no one remembers it. Robin Williams really deserved an Oscar nod for his brief appearance (there have been winners with even less screen time). I love that the entire film is an homage to Alfred Hitchcock -all the suspense and plot twists. In a similar vein, you might want to check out 1981's Body Heat with Kathleen Turner. It was huge in its day, and you never hear of it anymore.

Emma Thompson is wonderful. You should check out more of her movies. She and Branagh are in _Much Ado about Nothing,_ which you might like, and she is in and wrote the screenplays for _Sense and Sensibility_ and _Nanny McPhee,_ but those are only the tip of the iceberg for her career. Branagh also. They were married for a while. Would love to see a reaction of his _Hamlet,_ which has Kate Winslet as Ophelia.

My friend's dad quit smoking by visiting a hypnotist. 🤷 He'd been smoking since he was a teenager, and had tried to quit a bunch of times before.

Love this movie. I remember the movie box in video rental places as a kid. I found it in a library fundraiser sale for like a quarter in college and have watched it regularly ever since. 😂

One of my favorite movies. First saw it in my high school English class when we were studying different stories that dealt with reincarnation. I loved it then and love it now. So glad to see "Dead Again" getting more attention.

I think it was pretty good overall; I felt it was a bit slow in the first half BUT given what happens, I feel maybe that can be excused
Fun twists and turns, I'd give it a watch when you have free time!
