  • I picked up some Super Famicom controllers on eBay, but this one was a little crusty. The R button when I first tried it wouldn't even move, it was seized in place with dried Pepsi or something similar. I show you how to open up and clean a Super Famicom controller

    I found really stressing that because he misplaced the relieve turns in the cable at the end, he just kept crushing it while trying to assemble the controller, saying it was because of the shoulder button posts instead.

    I remember picking up a model 2 Genesis at my local goodwill a while back for $30. It came with everything you would need to play it on your tv, 2 controllers, and no games. The Coaxial av cable that came with it was broken so I ended up buying a cheap proper composite AV cable from Amazon. Also one of the controllers had a super dirty D-pad I cleaned it up and it now looks much much better.

    Great video, I love how the hardest part of all your videos I've seen so far despite the fact you solder and repair the most frustrating electronics was..... drum roll... clipping together a SNES controller. This gives me hope for my own repair attempts. :)

    Just recently went through the same process with my own SFC controller before watching your video. (My controller was fairly clean, but one of the silicone pads was ripped.)

    That burn in test cartridge peaked my interest, cause I never seen something like it before. Then I saw that the Snes version costs anywhere from $1500 to $2000 That's crazy!

    Really well done video here :) I've recently dug out my SNES controllers after picking up an Analogue Super Nt, and even though they've been in a bag for about 15-20 years they've definitely seen better days - I think I'll use what I've learned here to give them a good clean!

    My eBay order of a lot of broken controllers came today. I specifically wanted broken ones so I could use the D-pads for my 8BitDo controllers, and the SNES cords I could use to extend my SFC controllers- I wouldn't want to "waste" a working unit.
    But damned if I haven't gotten them all working! Most complex repair was having to add a jumper wire to deal with a corroded trace.

      Ha, congrats? You could always just swap sfc and snes cables to have a few long sfc ones?

    3:19 Yeah that works - I imported SFC Jr and didn't like the short cords so I switched them with the longer cords out my PAL Super Nintendo pads. Really easy - just clicks out. Thought I was the only person who'd thought of that.

      adz693 I wonder if you can take a cable from a fake controller and replace the original cord with it? Don’t really have any to open up and check if they have the same connector.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому +1

      Most fake controllers are soldered directly to the board, they don't use a connector. Now, in theory you could bypass the connector altogether and solder the cable directly to the board.

    Oh, interesting, I also cleaned a filthy SNES controller recently. It had so much gunk inside, tons of like this nasty paste that formed from dead skin and fat/moisture. There was so much of it on the yellow button it like permanently stained it somehow, I tried everything to get rid off that brown spot, but even magic cleaner soaked in alcohol wouldn’t pick that stuff. It probably just discolored the plastic itself. Luckily it’s not visible outside, but still, a bit crazy.

    If you don't have a program to test your controller after the process and you don't really want to play either, just use the game Starwing (or Starfox in the US). You can literally test every single button in the second screen of the game. Works perfectly for me. Barrel rolls shoud be easy to do with the shoulder buttons. Also, I push Start and Y repeatedly to see if the Start button is as responsive as it shoud be, also press Select a couple of times which should be equally as responsive. D-Pad should go very smooth as well in all directions. Then just test all the regular buttons and you're good!

    I have a PlayStation 2 on which the controllers don’t vibrate. I hear this is due to a blown fuse, and it also prevents multi taps from working. Any idea where I can get a replacement? I hear it’s a 0.75 fuse. It’s a 30000 model console.

      Japan in general uses English quite a bit, and i believe kids even learn it as a second language in school, so it wouldn't be completely foreign to them in a game. There's also a lot of words claimed as "english" that don't really have a translation.

    Hi, idk if you can give advice about this, but do you know where you can get CR2032 batteries for cheap? I live in Europe and I usually order this kind of stuff from AliExpress, but for some reason they don’t sell these type of batteries with right kind of tabs there, which is weird. When I went to I was a bit shocked at prices, like they ask 5 dollars for a single battery which is a bit ridiculous for me when I recently bought 5 CR2025 on AliExpress for 2 with half and a dollar shipping fee bc I chose tracked shipping option. So I wonder if there is some website that you know that sells them for reasonable price?

    • @RobertoRanieri
      @RobertoRanieri 6 років тому

      Alexandr Oleynikov I’m an eBay seller, and I won’t post to Russia again. The problem with Russia is it it’s outside the EU, so the package could get stuck in customs, and shipping to Russia costs about double what I’d pay to ship anywhere in the EU, possibly even more. Also, the eBay shipping service doesn’t support shipping to Russia.

    • @tannisroot
      @tannisroot 6 років тому

      RetroRepairs I have noticed that it’s pretty common for people from asian countries to just use english words in the middle of a sentence mixed up with their native language. And it’s not only young people, but also like people over late 30 or 40. I can imagine it being like a trendy thing there.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому

      The English (and American) influence stretches very far. Many words don't have direct translations to Japanese and the Japanese seem to adopt a ton of aspects from other cultures and languages.
      They also apparantly use the Latin alphabet (ie. English) when entering information into computers. Plus I believe English is required learning in Japanese schools.
      Plus, I've also heard that English words seem more modern than Japanese. Japan became a country in 600bc, England, after 1000AD. With over 1600 years separating the languages, it makes sense
