All mushrooms are fungi but not all fungi are mushrooms, on that you're right but of all things we eat and touch without second thinking they're pretty close. Getting traumatized but the thought of touching it is just silly :) so I wanted to give an idea of what it was and that it doesn't bite
vytae9 I think you misunderstand what gives it the gross factor. Not only does it come from a fermented product, associated with food gone bad and rot, but it contains live bacteria and yeast. For reference, think about a drink that has gone bad. Hurl worthy. Makes one want to worship the porcelian throne. Except kombucha is that drink gone way out of hand and the few filmy strands of bacteria or whatever in the drink that showed it had gone bad have now grown into a thick gelatin-like mat. Mushrooms have nothing to do with it. A more apt comparison would be perhaps vinegar or beer, perhaps, but at least when you buy those you don't get a thick steaming mat of the mother.
Drunken Whaler yeah it’s gross in that aspect but it’s good bacteria that helps your body so in a way knowing that makes it not as gross or atleast for me
Moose Nope, it’s like a tough mushroom but can also have the texture of lychee. I wouldn’t compare it in any way to oyster except for the sliminess lol
when i was a little child (late 90s post soviet kazakhstan), this kombucha was very popular. it was called "tea fungi" and literally everyone had it. i was disgusted of it and even afraid. Somehow it connected in my imagination with xfiles tv series.
This made my day! I usually feed the extra scoby to my chickens or give it to friends to start their own brew but I'm definitely gonna give this recipe a try next time I borrow a dehydrator from the Kitchen Share.
I almost never comment, but I felt the need to for this. Not that this comment will actually be read seriously by anyone that believes Kombucha is the cure for everything, but as a microbiologist I wouldn't recommend this. Multiple systematic reviews have found that Kombucha does not contain any positive health benefits whatsoever. In addition to this, there have been multiple cases of people dying from Kombucha, most likely because their blend was contaminated with harmful bacteria. The bottom line is there's no positive benefits to this, and there's definitely the potential for negative effects, so weigh the pros and cons of Kombucha, but people who are unfamiliar with bacterial culturing could run into some difficulties fermenting unknown strains at home.
It was only Patient 1 that died. This could mean whatever they covered it with could possibly counteract with it. It could also mean they could be suffering from a health crisis but one person had it worse than the other. This is the ONLY death that everyone who researches this gets spooked about. Whatever cloth she use could of caused an effect like using paper towel or cheesecloth. Things like that you're not supposed to use. So you can't simply imply the fact that one patient died is the reason for calling Kombucha unsafe. Or you could always go back to the original source of the Scoby parent and ask them in detail, what exactly are they using i.e if they use antibacterial soap? or What temp they allow it to ferment? Is it undisturbed between the 7-21 day period? Otherwise, you don't really have a lead
This is exactly my point, your comment clearly expresses a completely misunderstood perspective of both the studies, and what I was trying to say. I led by saying that many many studies have shown that there are no real positive health benefits and that there is definitely the potential for negative effects. There are lots of things that could statistically could be a lot worse, i.e. eating lots of sugar or drinking heavily, etc. But no one purports those things to be healthy. I agree that there could be confounding factors in the studies I posted that led to death, but there are many more studies than the ones that I replied earlier. On top of that, these are quite well done controlled studies so they account for extraneous factors as you're saying. Using paper towels or cheese cloths are not going to be major factors in contamination (not sure what you're mentioning here), and using antibacterial soap is irrelevant. Most soaps on the market aren't antibacterial and they exert their effects through the mechanical action of scrubbing, not antibacterial properties. In fact, many public health agencies are against using antibacterial soap because of their ability to create resistant strains. So if you want to make Kombucha or SCOBY go for it, but as I said in my original post, it's not gonna do you much good, and could do the opposite.
Graham Gould Maule The only thing I ever used kombucha for was when my brother was constipated and needed a cleanse, the only thing it did cleanse was his colon.
Even though the Scobi just looks and sounds disgusting, you really sell this. Look at that fruit rollup! Looks amazing, and the editing flow of the video is very smooth
What is really dumb is people don't really understand that fermentation of cultures is the base idea behind an insane amount of foods. Bread is made from yeast, which is fungus. Scoby is the same idea, its an organism that eats sugar and makes carbon dioxide (carbonated hint hint like soda). Don't dismiss stuff if you can't bring yourself to try it.
If you don't wanna do the whole cooking strawberries on the stove, a super easy and low effort is macerate the berries with sugar. Doesn't matter if they're fresh, frozen or thawed, just sprinkle a few spoonfuls over the berries and leave them be for at least 30mins (although the longer the better). When you come back the berries will be soft and in a berry syrup.
these little squares in the beginning could be really good to keep in a little glass bottle for your bag or pocket to chew on when you need something to chew on instead of your nails/cheek/tongue etc/
Fun fact. There’s a company or something like that making clothes and accessories with the bacteria from kombucha tea. To my knowledge it’s not for sale but it’s basically a new version of leather

I'm in the process of making SCOBY candy right now. Marinated a SCOBY in juice and xylitol (because you know it's great for your teeth- said everyone EVER). Next I'm going to cut it up and pop into the dehydrator.
@@KombuchaLiz No, I've never worked with Kombucha. I'm more of a bread-baking-guy. Although my recent attempt at a wheat sourdough starter has somehow turned into acetone. not the same as a mushroom. its fungi but a mushroom is not scoby

oh my god yes... can i make weed infused kombucha?
Charlie Romero HIPSTER
Delectable
If you make an activated cannabis tincture, you could add that to your kombucha
i know weed honey is a thing, so just make like.. ginger&lemon Kombucha and add weed honey to it, voila?
You're welcome i guess.
THC needs a solvent so kombucha itself wouldn't do it but a tincture or rso would work
