- On May 4th 2016, ILM and ArtStation.com announced the first ILM Art Department Challenge to find the next generation of artists capable of working in the Star Wars universe. 3,888 artists responded the the call, and on May 18th the challenge began with The Moment-imagining key new moments from the Star Wars Episode IV-VI movies. Only 330 artists were invited to the next phase of the challenge, The Ride, which asked artists to design new Star Wars vehicles. Then it was down to only 224 artists who qualified for The Job Challenge. A concept art boot camp of 6 mini challenges that tested each artist's ability to produce work quickly, to receive last minute Director's changes, and to experience what it is like to work at ILM on a Star Wars project. After three weeks of back to back challenges, 16 Art Directors from ILM judged the results to narrow the field down to eight finalists. We're very happy to present the finalists and winners with commentary from ILM Creative Director David "Nak" Nakabayashi and ILM Art Department Senior Manager Jennifer Coronado. Congratulations to all of the winners, and the Survivors who completed the ILM Art Department Challenge. I can see why Mario got first place, it's totally deserved. But man Ricardo's work is so incredible, it's my favorite.
I'm mind blown by a lot of submissions in this video. I can tell how much passion each one of them put into the different pieces and I believe it was worth it. Truly impressive work, each in their unique manner.
This ILM challenge was just amazing, there is just an ocean of new and incredible SW art now.
Some really beautiful work. Congrats to all the artists who participated.
Amazing work. My favorite was the first honorable mention.
Holy shit, so much insane talent, here!
Cool art!! Would love to see it all displayed on a page in high res photos
Awesome artist, equally awesome challenge.
There is so much love in each piece... it's just amazing.
glad that you guys have shared such great and varied talent, thank you!
Incredible!!!
what the.. first winner's wasnt as impressive as some of those mentions. did you rate on composition and story more?
I kind of like that a comic artist won. It shows how important composition and drawing is compared to lighting and mood, however his work is far from impeccable, especially compositionally. It seems like they chose him for his ability to draw and maybe seeing potential in him learning what they will teach him. As for story, none of them were good, even the hand but that's not their fault is more star wars fault for being a corny and outdated movie series.
Why wasn't they as impressive? Concept is more then just being good at drawing.
In a time where the majority of work goes for a look of digitally painted rather than a vibe of illustrator/comic art, I can see your point; it sticks out like a sore thumb. First place reminded me a bit of Moebius but still not sure how they as a collective arrived at that specific choice for first.
Amazing music... does anyone know where it's from?
Those art pieces look amazing would like the prints of some of those.
Cool stuffs, really love the work individually.
The winners are the other way around first three should've of won.
Wow! Really awesome and inspiring works!
Amazing art!!!
I wonder what the story is with the imperial guard and the hand and yoda.
Bravo Mario, in bocca al lupo!!!!
Disney would be doing themselves a disservice to not at least hire these artists as contractors for their future projects. The amount of emotion in some of these is phenomenal.
excellent!
How am I just finding out about this now, and why wasn't this a reality tv series a la the Jim Henson CreatureShop Challenge? Speaking of, there needs to be another one of those too - I could watch that until my eyes bleed.
Where do I learn to draw and render like this? The fundamentals are hard enough for me; this is sorcery.
Does anyone know the name of the artist that's being referred to while describing Morgan Yon's work at 6:55?
Zdzisław Beksiński
Is there a way to see every submission?

thanks a lot!! :)
First guy, Ricardo Federici was waaaaay better than all of the winners
What is a reason to push the thumb-down-button under this video??? I can't get it!!!
great art....but the maybe I'm blind but the top 3 werent as good as the runner ups. imo
Well, I guess you are judging purely on visuals. But that was not the main point of this challenge (in my opinion). The main point was how well the artist could response to the brief, what I assume is that ILM guys don't need someone who can do pretty pictures but someone who can bring exciting new ideas and concepts and in that regard the first three were better.
Simonoriginal I felt the story telling and concepts of the runner ups were every bit as good as the top 3. Once again, just an opinion
1st place was well deserved, 2nd and 3rd are trash
what the.. first winner's wasnt as impressive as some of those mentions. did you rate on composition and story more?
Its a concept art competition instead of an illustration competition so the winner was rightly deserved!
