「Touhou 1/東方1」ZUN - The Negative and Positive (Stage Theme Version) カバー Mirai's Remaster

This is the first stage boss theme in "Touhou 1" or "Highly Responsive to Prayers". This was made in March however the quality of that version is kinda not the best, so I went ahead to remaster it again. So basically you can say that this is the version 2.0

I still wonder what the hell SinGyoku actually is. Who are they? Are they the same person? What is their purpose? It's one of the only times we get to fight a dude in Touhou. It's so off compared to modern day Touhou, it's so mysterious, and like many things in PC-98, we'll probably never get an answer.

That's how I'd describe it too. It's somehow more old-school mystical and less fantastical than modern Touhou.
If you haven't seen it already, someone made a flash animation 3 years ago of a pc-98 anime. It's only one episode long but I highly recommend checking it out. It seems choppy at first, but it captures the essence of 90s fantasy anime, and sort of bridges the gap between old and new Touhou.

Shingyoku is probably an Onmyōji, more specifically, a Shinshoku.
And yeah, if it sounds similar it's probably because ZUN did it ON PURPOSE (Even both words "Shinshoku" and "Shingyoku" shares the Kanji "神")
Also, shingyoku and shinshoku are related to God's in a way or another.

Onmyōji are a type of Taoist Mage which are specialized in magic, divination, rituals and protection against youkai's.
And Shinshoku's (or Kannushi's) is a person responsible for the maintenance of a Shinto shrine, as well as for leading worship of a given kami.
Originally, the kannushi were intermediaries between kami and people and could transmit their will to common humans. A kannushi was a man capable of miracles or a holy man who, because of his practice of purificatory rites, was able to work as a medium for a kami. Later the term evolved to being synonymous with shinshoku - a man who works at a shrine and holds religious ceremonies there.
And what happened to shingyoku in Highly Responsive to Prayers?
Well, we can't exactly say what REALLY happened. But probably shingyoku was corrupted/manipulated by some type of shikigami, vengeful spirit, phantom or any other type of spiritual being, and attacked Reimu without mercy.
If shingyoku is REALLY the one who maintained the hakurei shrine, then, reimu probably killed them in self-defense for the unexpected attack, which would explain why shingyoku never appeared again after the first game.
And how does they death affects the hakurei god? Idk.
It probably doesn't even affects at all at the hakurei god, because the shrine blessing which gives faith to the hakurei god is youkai extermination (Source: Oriental Sacred Place, Chapter 17; Kasen Arm is destroyed when she touched the yin-yang orb and she is a youkai), so, meanwhile reimu makes youkai extermination, the hakurei god is fine.

@@pianosuki yeah, I think this info about shingyoku should be shared, because it's not only unknown for the community but its truly interesting and makes shingyoku an interesting character. Such a shame for never appearing again.... not even as a cameo........
