  • Are you still hesitant to make the leap from Cakewalk SONAR to Cakewalk by BandLab? Hopefully this will help assay your fears and allow you to make a better decision when migrating from SONAR to BandLab.
In this video I answer some of the most frequently asked questions including:
☑ Is Cakewalk by BandLab the same program as SONAR Platinum?
    ☑ Is it really free?
☑ Will I lose any SONAR features I paid for?
    ☑ Will SONAR be updated?
☑ Can I keep SONAR if I install Cakewalk?
☑ Does Cakewalk by BandLab require an Internet connection to work?
☑ Have existing bugs in SONAR Platinum been fixed in Cakewalk by BandLab?
☑ Will Cakewalk by BandLab support my SONAR Platinum plug-ins?
☑ Why do I need a BandLab account?
☑ Does this mean I have to be active on BandLab’s social music platform?

    Awesome video, Robert, very informative.
I love Cakewalk, the fact that every plugin I throw at it works perfectly well and all the features like comping, automation of effects, sends, production elements like piano roll, staff view and many other feature are all there in a free DAW, it's just mind blowing.
I feel like Cakewalk is the younger cousin of Pro Tools and the awesome thing is that it's just as powerful and totally free.

Thank you for this video! My biggest concern about Cakewalk by Band Lab has been the possible loss of existing instruments and plug ins. That’s why, for over 4 years now, I haven’t switched over. The Sonar interface is SO user friendly and intuitive, I’m glad Band Lab has maintained this format and design.
Your video has given me the confidence to know I can switch over without any loss of functionality or currently saved projects.
    Again, thank you!

Gee I wish I can make music again? But my Sonar x3 doesn't work anymore because I can't register it? So i downloaded Cakewalk by Band Lab, well everything went great until I was dealing with latency problems. So i installed Asio 4 All. So I did that then everything went to Hell. I was getting totally no playback. no matter what I did? Then after that cakewalk by Band Lab wasn't working at all so I had to uninstall it along with Asio 4 All. so I spent and wasted more time by reinstalling Cakewalk by Band Lab 3 more times. which was not successful I have no idea what had just happend? Do you know on what I can do?

How do I go about using the old plug-ins installed on the Sonar Platinum with the new machine? To add an additional problem, the email I used for the old program was dropped due to costs (mindspring charged $12 a month so my wife and I could use our names in our email account). Hi, I have a little question: Can you make a special video about midi in Cakewalk? Because often when I tried to use CbB I ran into some trouble when it came to such things as: Midi-editing, Midiloop creation (while drawing notes), having just the loop selected area, having a starting point at c9, and not being able just to draw a clip to edit a tiny clip to be midi loop.
I'm an Ex-Cakewalkuser and that is one of the things I found Cakewalk really lacking when working on more electronical projects. Though I'm realy happy that they solved some stability issues like "autoclose when trying to use vital". Cool videos and keep your head up:)

The Nomad Factory Blues Tubes Bundle works perfectly in CbB. I still use them in most of my projects. Honestly I can say that as of today, with all the new updates, CbB is far better than Sonar Platinum. I do a lot of progressive music with tempo changes and 20+mn projects and it used to crash a lot with Sonar Platinum. Since CbB came I've had no more crashes. It's as you said, phoenix rising from the flames!

I have a long history with Cakewalk from when it was a sequencer only for Windows 95.

I bought Sonar Platinum for $500 just before it went belly up. Never used it since my XP system still runs.

I'm like you, I started out with Sonar 5 and used 8.5 for years just because it was relatively flawless. One of the biggest reasons I moved on to a newer version was the compatibility with new VSTi's. Some of the 3rd party VSTi software was not compatible with the version that I had. Now there's VSTi 3 which includes Kontakt player (with plugins) and Waves Complete. The sound quality of the newer VST and VSTi's is exceptional. It blows my mind at how great these VST's sound these days and that, alone, made it well worth the upgrade.

All of the Platinum plugins and extras were there and it seems to be more stable. So far, so good!
I've always had one question though, which is why I didn't change earlier. I guess I still have the same question now...

..that they put more horse power into SI Drums and SI Bass.. Did they update the sounds of those vsti's or are they the same as they were in Sonar?
I can also attest that free doesn't mean "cheap." Because, when l bought Sonar X1 Producer and later, the paid update to Platinum from X3, my total investment was around $550 and the program was worth the money.. Band Lab doesn't include AD2, Breverb, Melodyne or alot of the vitual synths, but the core program appears to be more stable and there's still alot of the other goodies from Platinum like the pro channel and a bunch of the modules that were $50 each...

I still use the final version of Cakewalk Sonar Platinum from before the end of Cakewalk under Gibson, and the Bandlab takeover. I installed Cakewalk by Bandlab, (mostly out of curiosity), but honestly haven't seen much of a difference between the two in "real-world" use, especially in the claimed "stability" and "bug fix" department. I've honestly never noticed any stability issues with Sonar Platinum over the years and can't recall the last time I came across an issue I would call a "bug", but maybe I've just been lucky.

My biggest question is the future. As updates occur, previous versions cannot always open files saved by more recent versions. My SONAR X3 still runs with no issues. In the 3 1/2 years that Cakewalk has been around as a BandLab product, many, many people have installed Cakewalk alongside SONAR with no issues whatsoever. There's no special trick to it, Cakewalk creates a separate folder for its executable files

Go buy Sonar 8.5 professional, you can still download the updates for up to 8.5.3. Sonar 8.5 hands down is the most stable version of all Sonar products! I installed Cakewalk by Bandlab and within the first hour it crashed 10 times! It's also very sluggish. Sonar 8.5 is very snappy and can do many tasks at the same time with no hiccups! ... So, do you want an extremely buggy program? Cakewalk by Bandlab is extremely buggy! I just don't have the patience or time to use that! It was able to open my recent project, but kept wanting to use Melodyne VST3 plug-in instead of the VST2 version that I used on Sonar 8.5.3. I didn't get a choice to choose the VST 2 version... So I had to disable VST 3 plug-in. It played fine for 2 minutes, then crashed. WTF? Didn't do a thing, crash. I restarted it, unfroze a track, selected that track and played with my midi...after 5 keystrokes...crash!! WTF?? Yeah... Too much crashing going on! Sonar 8.5.3 doesn't get phased at all!

I'm also puzzled by bandlab. I used to have Sonar 4 and it was really fast, and everything worked like a charm. Now using a much faster computer the bandlad crashes and doesn't even run TTS1 properly. I don't see the same program, it doesn't look like nor it behave like sonar.

@@EduardoBach01 I found out much later that allot of old Cakewalk plugins like Rapture, Boost-11, Dimension Pro will crash Cakewalk by Bandlab. Short answer, you don't have to switch. You can have both installed at the same time.
Sonar is no longer maintained, Bandlab is. Bandlab is very, very superior to Sonar in so many ways (features, stability, performance) that I can't imagine why anyone would not take the update, unless they've got Red Hat disease or something.

Same here, I purchased Sonar Platinum Lifetime shortly prior to the discontinuation of Sonar. I suspect fraud in that instance since I think it likely that Gibson knew what was coming and milked Sonar for all they could before selling the product. The good news, however, is that previously purchased add-ons, e.g., Dimension Pro, still can be installed and used.
