This is a 2019 re-upload of a video I did in 2014 with the example AGT DVD footage removed. This guitar lesson details the live acoustic cover of Message in a Bottle from his 2003 live DVD "Any Given Thursday". I've included a downloadable PDF version of the TAB I've written (tiny.cc/jm-MIAB), which is what the onscreen TAB is derived from. This version includes the fourth verse ("State of Emergency") present on the DVD but omitted from the CD version of the same track. a small portion of the lesson is also dedicated to the earlier arppegiated version Mayer used to play as well as Andy Summers right-hand fretted harmonic Lenny Breau technique on the original track from "The Police".
You are absolutely killing it man. Can’t show you how much I appreciate everything you do for us
I hope you look at these comments and realize how much you are appreciated by us. Thanks so much for all the tutorials man. YOUR ACTUALLY THE DUDE!
bro he's canadian, even if he sees a negative comment he'll thank the guy for leaving a comment and apologize for wasting their time with a promise to make better tutorials in the future
It’s an assuring sight to see your face pop up when looking for Mayer lessons. As always quality lesson
Would just like to say thanks for all your tutorials for free You’re a gem.
this is the most generous TY channel out there!!!
one of the best guitar channels on youtube.
I thought you were done with the Mayer tutorials! Thanks for all of this!
Thanks for reposting this Dr Z! Your lessons are top notch for having a full song study along with learning to play and then understanding the "why". Would love to jam with you in person someday!
You should have a patreon. Of all the people who have it you are one of the few who actually deserve it
My first time here....GREAT LESSON!! Not too basic and moves right along. OUTSTANDING in a youtube world of excellent teachers. I don't know of anyone else who is so clear and direct about a lesson, including a tab right over the image of the hands. Brilliant!!
...but WTF is up with the background????
Show a man a zoom channel and he'll put up a Hawaiian background; GIVE a man a green screen and he'll put up some ridiculous eighth grade science fiction backdrop that has nothing whatsoever to do with what he's doing so well in the foreground!! DUDE!! Really!!!
And BTW...that's some nice guitar you're got...Breedlove??? I just made it through to the end...What a labour of love to put this together!! We all owe you a debt of gratitude for the effort and knowledge to mount such a vid.
I don’t know how busy you are with making these, but do you think you could make a tutorial for the Lenny/ Man on the Side from this album? I can’t find anything anywhere and it would be awesome if you could make a tutorial for it. If you can’t make a tutorial it’s totally fine though. :)
I was literally just listening to this song after watching Stings TED Talk. lol! Will definetly check this out, once I feel ready to play something hard like this. Thank you!
What an absolutely perfect lesson. It’s a crime you don’t have more subs 🤷🏼♂️ keep it up 👍🏻
This is a great lesson. It must have taken forever. Thanks very much !
Been waiting for this for a bit. Thank you so much

This man is def a warlock main
I love your lessons but I have a little hard time to follow, maybe more playing would help. thanks for teaching us
I was just looking at another guy's video last week and this guy played the perfect amount of bars for the tune, went back just the right amount of times, constantly said stuff like "This is what we have so far". I am totally going to steal his workflow for my next video. I too watch a lot of instructional videos and it is EASY to get lost when the instructor glosses over some stuff. I am guilty of that. I'll try to get better ;-)
Loved the lesson as always Zartimus. If you're up for it, have the time, and like the song, it would be awesome if you took a look at John's "Another Kind of Green " acoustic version. The performance I'm talking about can be seen in this video. ua-cam.com/video/XDSEGajnDdw/v-deo.html
bruh how do you sing over this?
Back to u, pls
Have you ever been a wingman for Barney Stinson?
Can you please do gravity
Nicholas brown working on “Heart of life” now, that version of gravity is next!
Zartimus thank you
Watch Marty Shwarts he is the best yt guitar teacher
Love me some Marty. But he does E-Z versions which I hate ;-)
My hands can't reach over 5 frets help
same hands
instead of playing the 468 try playing the 8 in the chord on the 2nd string on the 4th fret, and instead of the 246 play the 6 in that chord on the 3rd string on the 1st fret (while thumbing the 2nd fret on the 6th string)
