I love the weening time battle of wills! It's interesting to see who wins, mom or baby. Baby usually thinks they win in the beginning, but by the end there is no doubt that mom won.
So happy to see what a pretty young girl teeny has grown up to be thanks to arroz and the feeders who he got to look out for her when she was such a tiny baby the first year of her life and happy to see they still look out for her. Happy that the male that looked out for her that day finding her troop has also been accepted in skull heads troop. He is a kind and gentle soul. But I'm not sure if his name is William or Liam so could someone help me out with that info.
I think Sarah and Her kids are very good looking monkeys !! It's hard to believe that Teeny is grown up, and ready to get pregnant !! She was such a darling baby girl !l
I know weaning starts as the mating / pregnancy season begins, but also is there any correlation to the current babies going to the milk bar just to pacify and not actually suckle for milk?
Hi @prestons78! I am not an expert in primates, so everything I’m about to say is theory on my part. That said, it appears to me that the babies look to the milk bar for security and comfort as much as for milk. As they get older, I would imagine that they supplement solid food with their mother’s milk, but I doubt they are dependent on it at all at that age. I feel that the babies struggle so much with the weaning process mostly because it is a fairly abrupt loss of that security and comfort that they’ve always known. I feel that is likely that mothers experience sore nipples from the hormones of the new pregnancy that sparks the weaning process. I’d be interested to know if mother’s who do not become pregnant the following year are the mothers that are more lenient with weaning. There is no doubt that instances of yearlings and slightly older offspring being allowed to nurse can only occur when there is no new infant to prevent their doing so. But I think hormonal (pregnant) sore nipples is the primary instigator of the weaning process in most cases.
@@GGdmk thanks. That is what I was thinking. Mom knows they are getting nourishment from her so time to move on. Although I hadn’t thought about the sore nipples. That makes a lot of sense. It may be insensitive to say, but I kind of enjoy the tantrums. Dopey and Deenly especially.
Rhesus Macaque's start weaning their babies about 4 months of age. It is a gradual process. The babies are weaned by the time the next baby is born. If a mother doesn't have another baby that year, the yearling may (depends on the mom) nurse longer. Nursing is of course first and foremost for feeding the baby monkey but it is also for comfort.
@@kimberlygarrish205 Thank you for your input. I only have the videos from Monkey Hill on which to make my observations of Rhesus Macaques, but I do find them fascinating. I’ve wondered for some time whether mother monkeys really understand the concept of death by starvation regarding the breastfeeding of their infants. Through the 3 or so years of videos I’ve been watching from Monkey Hill I have come to believe that they don’t understand the concept of starvation in the sense of it being a cause of death. I can’t claim to know if weaning is the intention of the mothers beginning at around 4 months, but I would think the intermittent rejections of the mother monkeys at that young age is more about their own selfish desire to be free from having their kids attached to them all the time. It has to interfere a great deal with grooming and foraging, especially as the babies get bigger and heavier. Given that babies begin to eat solid foods at such young ages, they not only develop more quickly than human babies but also become less dependent on their mothers milk once they are old enough to grab food for themselves. I do think you are right about the weaning process being more progressive over time than what it may appear, but I think the babies still do greatly struggle mostly with being completely cut off from the security of being tucked up to their mothers chest.
It seems as if one monkey makes a noise, they all follow. There are a few with very raspy voices that are really annoying. They sound like a goose honking. And then of course there are all the babies that have to join in. And it seems as if all the locals are hanging around and following the babies. Do they do that when they are looking to steal one of them??
Isn't Sarah the matriarch of this troop. Skullheads troop? Then it would make sense that many males are hoping to breed Sarah. It would make them the Alpha male then, right?
@@monkeysinc.3818 Abbie huh? I read that in Aroz page in the later months of Skullhead being with his troop that it split into ??? number of troops. Maybe sara went with one of the other splinter groups. Or maybe i have it mixed and she's with another troop entirely.
I think AM thought Sarah was the matriarch of Skull Heads troop. MC has demonstrated that the true matriarch is/ was Abbie through her filming. Sarah is a high-born and is ranked below a few other females. Abbie, and Sarah are both in the same split of Skull Heads troop. I say this because MC films them sometimes in the same frame. I agree, the split of Skull Heads troop is confusing. What is the other half doing? How many members are there? Is it also a mega troop? Who is the alpha and the new matriarch? Do they also hang out on golden hill road?
