My first powder I reloaded with in 30-06 back in early 70’s. My uncle along time Reloader since the early 60’s introduced me to reloading my first 30-06 with IMR 4895. After full circle I am using IMR 4895 today with the Barnes 175gr LRX @ 47.2 in LC brass. Accuracy still great !

The hazmat fee is typically $20 on top of shipping for up to 48 lbs of powder. I would budget more to allow for bigger purchases so that the hazmat fee can be spread over a larger buy. I've also done group buys for myself and fellow reloaders and divided 8 lb kegs between us.
Tony549 - We used to do the same when we were shooting steel...burned lots of powder so we grouped together to make the big purchases and the powder was shipped to our range. Worked out well. Best to ya, Steve

There’s such a shortage of powder, I am renting out 8 pound jugs of CFE223 as decorations for weddings, baptisms, etc..

When I began loading in 1960, I had four powders to load anything from 9mm to 45-70. Four...
Then I got caught up into having over 40 different types of powders! Total nonsense! Today I have six basic powders. Standardized loads for the weapons I use. By keeping it simple, I've made it easier and better.
less is more, same with bullets and primers .if you got a good one (recipe )stay with it ,thats saves money.
IMR 4895 was the first powder I ever used. I used it for .308 with a Lee Loader. I don’t remember how I came to choose 4895, but probably from studying reloading manuals. Didn’t take long to replace the Lee Loader with a single stage press. Seating primers with a hammer made me nervous.

Absolutely, I use it for my 223,308 and 35 rem
I will always have a good supply of IMR 4895, IMR 4227, WIN 748 and Universal. Sorry I forgot win 231 and 296. I can cover almost everything with those powders. I like Universal and IMR 4227 for my lead bullets and the others for jacketed bullets. Even though I cast my own rifle bullets but I still like to have 1,000 jacketed bullets for my 5.56 and 7.62 rifles and carbines. I like to have 8 lbs of each just to be safe. I started to keep my powder out in my garage in a air tight container with a separate container for my primers just to be safe. I don't want a fire. I use a I lbs can of each I keep in the basement and refill my one lbs can of the same powder. I have about 60 lbs of powder and 30,000 primers. I feel much safer having it out of the house. I also love to load 45-70 and 44-40 in black powder. I have loaded some 45 LC in black powder. Fun stuff. Am I the only one paranoid enough to do this? Thanks for another great video old UA-cam friend. You and Elvis Ammo are my oldest UA-cam friends. You guys taught me how to powder coat 6 or do years ago. I could be off by a bit. Bbtt - You've got it figured out so well done..!! Thanks for being out there in the nether lands...Pyrodex was developed as a black powder substitute that was more safe to handle and store. Having a powder magazine is a good idea. You are well protected from times of shortage. As for flammables, we can have 60 gallons of gasoline in our car and truck - each gallon equal to the explosive power of 4 sticks of dynamite = 240 sticks of dynamite + a lot of other stuff that will burn. I always figured that if the house burns, the insurance policy will help us rebuild like the forest that comes back after a big fire. That actually happened to my in-laws whose house burned to the ground. Of course, we don't want that to happen to us, but that's why we buy the insurance. Insurance can rebuild a home but it can't replace pictures and one of a kind things like my nephew's first firearm and it's a 4th generation to him. I was the third. My grandfather bought it in 1940 and it has been in the family since then. I was a Boyscout for 3 decades. I'm always prepared. I have 6 months of freeze dried food and 4 hand held Ham radios and we all have licenses and solar system to run the fridge and freezer and my CPAP machine. I even have several small power banks with solar panel built-in to charge the radios and flashlights and such. It's something that I have been doing for a decade at least. I'm not a survivalist or any thing like that. I just had grandparents that went through the depression here and in Germany. They all had a huge pantry because they all had to do without. They learned a valuable lesson and we're ready for anything. That's why I have a good stock of reloading supplies. Plus I was able to help out a few friends when they needed primers or powder. They would come over and we would reload together. The nice 5hing is that I taught them how to reload. If they ever had a question they would just call. Of they broke the rim off the case in the sizing die they would come over sand I would remove it. I would help them upgrade their equipment. It is fun watching them learn and grow in the reloading side if life. It's helped me make new friends. You were responsible for me casting and powder coating going back at least 5 or 6 years ago maybe longer. I can't thank you enough for opening that door for me. Not only do I get the feeling of pride of making the projectiles but to powder coat them and getting all perks of casting. First it makes the price per round unbelievably inexpensive. I can get any design of projectile I want. Powder coating is better for the firearm. It cuts down the amount of time you handle lead. You can controll the hardness to some degree. The projectiles look nice when they are colored in my favorite colors. Thank you so much and sorry this is so long. Welcome back . I thought maybe you said something politicly incorrect and had a terrible accident . Your videos always take the words out of my mouth . There's a few other multi-caliber powders , but you pretty much got it covered . Powder is hard to find , but sometimes I get lucky .I experiment a lot now ,as you do . You don't know til you try it . Keep 'em comin' Stay safe and healthy .

My understanding of the history on Triple 7 is that when in development of that powder it was the 777 try that met his expectations. Great video and thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge for the new people on the block.
4895 can cure a rainy day.. does not set the world on fire, nor make you more handsome, but it sends bullets down range highly accurately. With the powder shortage, I happen to try it out in my mini 14.. like I said does not set the world on fire, but boy what a tack driver. I been using it for years in my BLR 308, but in 223 I was pleasantly surprised.

My go to for 45-70
It was mine also for the 45-70. It shoots near same hole in my 22-250 Ruger bull barrel rifle.

The last powder I was able to buy before it all went away was 2 1lb canisters of 3031.
Absolutely, IMR-3031 is extremely useful in various rifle cartridges.

It's good to put a face on a voice. This is the first time I've seen you, but a long time viewer. I use Triple Seven on my rolling block, but for some reason wherever I go TRiple SEven and Pyrodex are readily available in my area. Nonetheless, I stoked up. Cheers!
Great information on very useful and versatile powders, FC! Thanks for posting this on YT! I really like the long-cut IMR 4064. Works very well in many applications. I think that if Hodgdon included a de-coppering agent in Winchester 748, that would be about the best thing ever for prairie dog shooters. Lower flame temperature, easy metering, little to no copper fouling. What's not to like? Call it 748 CFE. Thanks for the vid, Cookie.

I use the plastic insert from .45 auto and LC boxes for reloading trays. Works perfectly.
Great and informative video. My two go-to powders are AR-Comp and Varget. They have very similar characteristics and performance, but even before the shortages, AR-Comp was pretty scarce. Powder Valley thankfully regularly restocks Varget so it looks like AR-Comp is out for the foreseeable future, which is a damn shame because most of my load development was done with it.

I sold a pound of 4064 to a friend who needed it for a hunting trip. I had 6lbs left so sold it to him for what it would cost today to replace it,$30.00. He was happy to get it.

My go to reloading power over here is adi 2208 which we export to you guys in the US and you rebrand it as Hodgdon Varget , I have found over many years reloading and shooting mainly f class the best all round powder on the market , it’s easy to load , very consistent and works perfectly in extremely hot or cold conditions , i have tried other brands with various burn rates but always come back to 2208 , thanks for taking the time and sharing your knowledge i hope you are all well and staying safe ove there . IMR 4895 is one of my favorite powders, I have used the powder in .223, 6.5 TCU, and light bullets in 7 Rem Mag.

Ramshot tac has been my go to over the last 3 years especially since varget has gone crazy in price.
You mention some of my favorite powders. My highest volume cartridges that I load are 223/5.56, 308, 6.5 and 6cm. Some of my favorites are H4350, Varget, H4895, H322, IMR 8208 XBR, AR Comp, 2520, Tac, CFE 223, and I have come to respect SW Precision as well. I haven’t loaded a lot of W748 but what I have really surprised me in the accuracy dept. H335 is a great ball powder for volume plinking loads that I have found success with varmint loads as well. I have a bunch of powders and wish I could consolidate them down to less. When you could go to the store and get any powder you wanted I was very guilty of grabbing a lb of something I haven’t tried just to try it. Sometimes I love trying new loads as much as shooting. I have stumbled on some great loads this way as well. If I only could load one powder for a single cartridge it would be h4350 for my 6.5 and 6 cm, Varget for my 308, and I’m not sure on 223. I load every single powder mentioned with the exception of h4350 in 223.

I handload and shoot a lot of magnum caliber/cartridge rifles. My go to stable of powders include IMR-7828, IMR-4350, Retumbo, H1000, H4831, and Reloader 19 & 22. Depending on the caliber/cartridge some of them also work very well in light and medium caliber/cartridge rifle loads as well.

I use 4064 with great success for my M1 Garand's! H380 for my fast calibers and 4350 for my bolt action 06 and 308.

Varget is my favorite. Very universal in many calibers, its not the fastest powder, but its very accurate in all my loads.

FortuneCookie45LC, I do enjoy your videos. I just want to let folks know what I've learned about Pyrodex . First I have been shooting black powder for 40+ years. When Pyrodex came out my uncle & I decided to try Pyrodex for us to hunt with & it does not work well in cold weather. It would hang fire in cold temperatures, any temperatures below 32° fahrenheit. Itried it a bunch of times with the same result. I ended up giving it away. We went back to real black powder, namely Goex . I do like the other powders you have showed us. I also like CFE 223 too, and it will even clean any old build up of copper in your barrel too.

I've used 4895 and 4064 for years and have to rate them as my favorite powders. Varget is a new one I've had good luck with also, but I've never use 748 before. Years ago I had a .243 that loved 4064! Great video Fortune Cookie! I haven't seen you in quite a while. I hope you have been okay!

748 came out for the AR when 4895 gummed out the gas tube and the bolt would not seat after a few days of combat.

H4350, H4895, Varget and 4831 will always be on my shelf. Benchmark is a great on for .223 as well
Try the bmark in a 308 with a 155gr bullet. Never seen a rifle that wouldn’t shoot it well between 43-44 grns

No powder shortage in my area " Florida " just primers like everywhere else . I did have the sense to stock up on primers just before the Pandemic , I go to the range weekly and there for a while there were only reloaders .
Varget powder is great in the 22-250 while I like 4064 IMR is good for 30-06 with 150 grain bullets 4831 in Hogden and imr is useful for some of mag cartridges and cartridges like 25-06 and 270win

I use the triple 7 2ff in my pa pellet ultra light flintlock. But I first put 1 full shot of 4f black powder from my pan charger flask down than the 777 and seat my bullet . Than I prime my pan and shoot works every time with a Sharp flint.
4350 and 4831 are also great for the large case cartridges and heavy bullets.
I bought a box of 4350 8lb jugs about 25 year ago , still give the same result until today !
They also work very well in the 7mm calibers
RT - Those are indeed great powders - slow burners for magnums. 4831 was originally surplus 20mm Oerlikon cannon powder, the US Navy expended enough of that against the kamakazes during the battle of Okinawa to take care of the needs of all the magnum shooters of America for 25 years. The 40mm Bofors used a triple base (some might argue double base with the TNT derivative) powder specially designed for the Bofors that could not be sold to the public as surplus - same as all the 5", 8" and 16" cannon powders - all triple base. But 4831 was single base and fair game to be sold to Bruce Hodgdon for distribution to civilian shooters. When shooters think of magnum rifle powders, the first one that comes to mind is 4350. My favorite rifle powder is H414, it’s ball so it meters well, gets fastest velocity in many calibers and bullet weights. I load .243, .30-06, .270, 6.5X55 with it.
748 is the perfect powder for .223 and .30-30..
I do use 4895 for all my military .30-06 loads.
I have 24lbs of WCC844 and 8 of WCC846 which I also use in .223. I have used wolf primers but have misfires with WCC powders, but using CCI I get 100% ignition.
I love IMR and H4895, I wish I could find more of it.
I find IMR-4895 works well in my M1A and IMR-4064 in my Remington 700 in .308 Winchester
First I wonna say awesome video. Secondly if anyone shoots a muzzleloader, triple 7 is unbeatable in a smokepole, it's all that I use. I plan on testing 748 in my ar15, varget is accurate in everything I've shot it in,, except I get way slower velocities and once you hit the high end of the pressure varget goes nuts so be ware there, keep loads mild an don't worry about velocity an it'll drive tacs, but so far imr 4895 I only had one lb of just on a whim an man that stuff is awesome in a ar or bolt gun in respective calibers.

IMR 4895 or H4895 are still my favorites. If I had to choose between the two, it would be H4895 because it has less of a graphite coating, thus it is the easiest to ignite in reduced loads.
I prefer H4895 as well but have bought a couple pounds of IMR 4895 lately because I am low on H4895.
Well payday was yesterday so I am going to buy some IMR 4895 thought I would have cash left over but clicking on this video depleted my reserves
Hi There, I like your videos so much. Especially when you tell something about the history of the powders. I like those vintage containers too. I'm from Germany and here, lot of those US powders are not available. I tried Lovex S062 and D073.6 which shall be equal to Accurate 4046 and 2520. Do you have any experience how equal those Lovex powders are compared to the Accurate ones?
IMR 4064 used in M118LR and M118 ammo .
Been using varget for years to load 223 Remington. Have half an 8lb jug of varget. Bought an 8lb jug of 4895 few years a go. Still has factory seal on it.
I have a good variety of powder from it was available. Standard small pistol primers i am low on.

I’ve been looking into getting some IMR4227 for all around, what’s your take on it too?
Even though Varget { AR 2208 our equivalent in Australia} is made in Australia it is still difficult to source. Dosent matter which Gunshop you go to you get the same response, "Yes we have it on order but when we get it who knows". I share your frustration. We aussies even find it difficult to source Alliant , Hogden or even winchester powders.
I just ordered some Hodgdon BL-C at a good price. Is this a good powder with several uses. Thanks for all of your good information!
Triple 7 needs a good hot flame to get it going. But it works great.

I use to load my . 243 Winchester ammo with IMR 4350 for the best accuracy out of my rifle. IMR 4895, like you said, was my go to powder for my .30/06 hunting rifles. It's been some years since I've done any reloading, I'd have to start over like a Newby with all the new powders out there.

Great video FC 45LC I like a little history about the stuff I normally use. I've used a bunch of 4895 in my 257 Rbt's and 22-250. One I didn't see this time was IMR 4831 that was a reclaimed powder also. I'm hooked what's next?
John Hale - 4831 was surplus 20mm Oerlikon powder - single base so it could be sold to the public. The powders used in 40mm, and all the major cannons and artillery could not be sold to public because they were triple based or contained TNT or derivatives. Continued good shootin' to ya, Steve
Wonderful insights on these powders. So....Is the IMR 4895 and H4895 load data interchangeable? I shoot the 6.5 Grendel with 120 grain Sierra Pro Hunters and I find more data on the H4895 but I have IMR4895 on hand. Would love to know your thoughts on that. Great history lesson on the IMR 4895.
