Yeah that's always what I do, go to the bios, sometime running a live linux to test things out, and then if it's hardware, I open it up, I find it better to test the laptop before entirely reassembling it, to not having to open it up two times if a problem occur for exemple.
it doesn't fix the issue. It's a mitigation at best. If cable does not allow stable high-bandwidth transmission that probably means some component has degraded.
@@szymon7607 The problem is, that the Intel driver switches the refresh rate to 40Hz for some reason. Sometimes the display only flickers in battery mode. Sometimes it stays that way even in plugged-in mode. It happens even on brand new laptops, it's driver bug.

Yes, its very common on Laptops and desktop GPUs. I saw a laptop that started overheating after being dropped too hard on the table, or used GPU that started overheating after being shipped in a box. Both times repasting fixed them as the old hardened paste couldnt take even a small shift of the heatsink.
Using liquid metal on Copper heatsinks/heatpipes is a bad idea. Overtime, it gets absorbed into the copper and your temps will shoot through the roof again. In order to use Liquid Metal on copper stuff, it needs to be nickel plated to prevent absorption.
I used liquid metal on a 4670k back at launch that had been lapped with a direct copper heatsink. Used that PC for 5 years and never had any temps issues.
Nothing will happen, Copper will form alloy with liquid metal but temperatures should stay the same because that alloy have simillar heat conductivity, nickel plating is just for the looks. You shouldn't use liquid metal on aluminium heatsinks.
That is not completely correct. In the early days of the liquid metal boom, some people said that after half a year they check the liquid metal if there any leak, if it ''drys'' or similar, and saw that was ''obsorbed'' couse the copper form an a alloy, so they started a myth, because they wanted to sell a history and get views. Is like ''microwave or coca-cola zero cause cancer'', ''ps5 and liquid metal it is a bad idea and I show you why'', and all was false so they get views xD. So don't belive all you see in internet, especialy in youtube please.
I think it might of been mounting pressure/correct contact to CPU/GPU with the heat sink personally. Can’t see liquid metal fixing that much of an issue
Maybe thermal paste just wasn't enough for that laptop? Personally, I don't mind thermal paste because I don't have liquid metal - and 99% of the time, it's perfectly fine. I was thinking it might have been more a software issue or a fan curve issue... always good to check CPU temperatures using a program like Core Temp...
Well, for me, I usually check the BIOS first to determine if the problem is more on hardware side or software side. With that in mind, if you boot into Windows (or any other OS) and it behaves oddly, you can have high confidence that it is the OS fault instead of hardware issues. I'm glad it was a minor fix for LG Gram.

Hi I have enjoyed your videos for many years. I had a razer blade 17 2020 I used it for a good 2years. Since day one it’s done the ramping up fans. I believe it is because it has a Rtx2080 and i7 in a thin laptop. The fans only are like this when the power cable is plugged in to the laptop. And did not do it when on battery. I have since switched to a MacBook. The Razer was not broken, it is just a design flaw 😂. Also be careful putting liquid metal in laptops. The coolers I’m not designed for it. And also unlike a PS5 or a computer. A laptop is going to be chucked around more. Meaning that the liquid metal could spill out! But still enjoyed the attempt, and thank you for your effort! Keep up the good work!

You should care if the "conformal coating" is nail polish or not - certain types of nail polish contain chemicals that can damage solder resist or increase corrosion to metal components.

I was hoping you could make a video on the location of screws for the ps5 digital ,did a teardown and watched your video on it but was not aware of the different sizes of screws.
That flashing screen is a software or config issue, i have not finished the video yet so i hope that was the problem, i don't remember if it has to do with refresh rate or something like that
The LG Gram isn't fixed. You should DDU it and then restart it to see if it works after it installs it's display drivers again. Then you know it' fixed or not.
Believe me when you started opening LG , me thinking why why you didn't check the driver because when you first time boot it started flickering after some time.
Why in the world would you put liquid metal on a machine that is not setup to use liquid metal? this will cause issues later when its taken apart and the new owner dosent know there liquid metal, but more importantly theres nothing in place that would stop the liquid mental from getting on the components, other than the cooler, which i wouldnt trust.
Wdym the new pwner doesn’t know about the Liquid Metal? I would feel like he would tell him lol, and the new owner probably has no intentions of opening up his computer once it’s all fixed
My Asus gl503 laptop does that with the fans every now and then all do is plug the fan out and plug it back in and it's good for another few months use
The Display issue is probably related to the display cable starting to die. Uninstalling the Display driver will help for some time but with the cable getting more and more damaged from opening and closing it will eventually not work. Pretty common issue on the xps 9350.
Did you check the settings in the razor? I had a similar issue after some updates on a 15”. Turned out the updates defaulted the fan speed to “max” so every time I turned it on the fans would ramp to full no matter what the load was on the laptop.
There was nowhere near enough mounting force on that cooler when you put it on the first time. Thermal paste should be very thinly spread. Especially on a laptop. Even a quarter of a millimeter gap is enough to cause overheating
I think that because is a gamer laptop, the owner want to have better thermals in games and general, so he touch the BIOS and adjust the fans to be full speed at some grade or similar. So I recomend check that too. Because liquid metal not use to make a huge change in notebooks, cause the true cooler sistem is the fans and radiator, and don't use to be too much powerfull in laptops, of course if the thermal paste was a bad brand and act more like a thermal insulator, but this days are all good.
Can you do a video on the replacement of a 5 pole 3.5mm headphones Jack? Astro and Logitech are using them and there are no video's on 5 pole jacks especially Astro so it is low hanging UA-cam video fruit. Also no one shows how to identify which wire is for what point. Also an excellent way to sell and make a commission off 5 pole 3.5mm jacks as some people have a hard time finding them outside of aliexpress I have read on reddit.
A TronicsFix video where Steve manages to repair laptops is a rare gift, and should be cherished! Glad you're breaking your curse of having trouble getting them working again!
LM will get absorbed into the copper heatsinks and dry out in a few months, then you'll have to reapply them again. Using LM on copper is not really a good idea.
For the razor does it have a game mode bios? Some gaming boards have a game boost mode and ramp the fans up and the boost clock of the CPU. Just a thought
Why a PS5 which doesn't usually move around needs a shield to avoid liquid metal to go everywhere and frying the motherboard but a laptop (which is supposed to move around and is carried on a backpack) doesn't need it?
The fans are also a software fix. You need to download the Razer software and go to fan settings and put them in silent mode. I had the same issue with my Asus laptop everytime it hit 40c the fans started to ramp up.
Ask der8auer. 😂 One of my favourite german youtubers. Maybe he tells you the secret whether its nailpolish or not. BTW he is the founder, CEO and brain behind Thermal Grizzly.
liquid metal is good for thermal transfer, but otherwise is nasty stuff the thing that it's used for ps5 (due to thermal and space constrains, also probably to make planned obsolesce) does not mean is good for everything, there is compromises to make, and most of the times (99%) on computer's CPU and GPU good quality thermal paste is good enough without all the nasty things that liquid metal can do. If you use liquid metal on laptop, it would be nice to put some foam or similar material around the die to prevent liquid metal from spilling out as laptops are caried in various positions moved and tossed around.

Wouldn‘t it make sense with the first laptop, to check the temperatures first, before disassembling? To rule out if it was an issue with some kind of sensor?
he isn t really into computers, so he just applies what he learned from repairing consoles. So as consoles don t have temperature monitors, he has never checked temps on anything
although, he had very good ipothesis about the defects, and he did a great job on the razer. kinda dissapointed in the lg gram as he just uninstalled the igpu driver, which will install by itself again in the future, and probably will behave again like that
@@robertbuzdea6257it reinstalled right in the video. If it didnt he wouldn’t get any video at all.
@@robertbuzdea6257windows usually installs stable drivers from the past unlike new ones that could have issues. I’ve never had an issue with windows in over 20 years
You need some rubber coated tweezers for those ribbon cables.
actually, I had similiar situation with fans in laptop I bought recently.
I changed thermal paste , thermal pads , and everything seemed to be fine but fans kept spinning very fast when doing like literally anything.
The problem was caused by windows setting cpu to 4 ghz for some reason and laptop was oerheating because of that.
after changing some windows settings everything worked fine
I know first hand the pain of not disconnecting that battery before messing with the screen. I was trying to fix a HP laptop that had some kind of issue with it I can't remember. I took the motherboard out and I reconnected the battery before I reconnected the screen. As I was putting in the screen connector. I heard a zap and the back light on that laptop never worked again.
This is the one repair channel i really enjoy watching for entertainment. Great job steve! I need to put some liquid metal on some of my devices lol
It would of been great to see temps before and after liquid metal
Sometimes the flashing light on the display might caused by a corrupted display driver. Now I learned something different. Thanks Steve for posting it.
Yep. I've actually seen this at least one or two other times but just totally forgot about it when I started on this repair.
yea, microsoft sometimes bring new driver update that not fully compatible or just buggy driver
@@maklogetrich2378 imo the best option is always download the drivers from the computer manufacturer (i.e. HP, Dell, etc.)
I was hoping you could make a video on the location of screws for the ps5 digital ,did a teardown and watched your video on it but was not aware of the different sizes of screws.
That flashing screen is a software or config issue, i have not finished the video yet so i hope that was the problem, i don't remember if it has to do with refresh rate or something like that
My razor laptop would default to max fan speed all the time, would have to go in and change it back to automatic almost every time i restarted it
The LG Gram isn't fixed. You should DDU it and then restart it to see if it works after it installs it's display drivers again. Then you know it' fixed or not.
the first laptop it seemed their was not enough clamping force how thick that thermal paste was. maybe its just me but that would cause this issue
Believe me when you started opening LG , me thinking why why you didn't check the driver because when you first time boot it started flickering after some time.
Wow he saved those laptops...now that he has saved them...let me adopt those laptop now...I will take good care of them😌😆
I literally just watched the old video of this razer Laptop which you uploaded 1 year ago and now I came across this video … how freaking lucky 😂
Wow, that was a year ago?! Time goes so fast!
Love your channel. 👌 thank you
That first laptop has my name on it. Steve P. LOL
Did you remove the battery connector of the 2nd laptop before removing the display cable? This might cause some issues
I was asking myself the same question! Good point.
because he can duh😂
Wdym the new pwner doesn’t know about the Liquid Metal? I would feel like he would tell him lol, and the new owner probably has no intentions of opening up his computer once it’s all fixed
@@hakim9785 that doesn’t change any thing
@Bluehatmonke emmmm better cooling? Heat transfer from the cpu too the heatsink
13:50 That's our secret. WE NEVER KNOW WHEN TO STOP!
Did you check the settings in the razor? I had a similar issue after some updates on a 15”. Turned out the updates defaulted the fan speed to “max” so every time I turned it on the fans would ramp to full no matter what the load was on the laptop.
You should do repairs on Galaxy Buds. 3 ultra with also on the Galaxy 23 ultra phone.
Have you ever considered doing a livestream repair video
Just repaired something until it was broken (re-cap/component swap)… annoying! Glad you had some success today.
0:59 my uncle's laptop sounds like that. It's from 2017 and might need cleaning
Not convinced this guy gets this lucky, flying by the seat of his pants. AT 1.49M subscribers, likely he has people helping him out.
There was nowhere near enough mounting force on that cooler when you put it on the first time. Thermal paste should be very thinly spread. Especially on a laptop. Even a quarter of a millimeter gap is enough to cause overheating
does liquid metal corrode the copper coating?
Welcome to the world fred
What thermal paste would you recommend for a laptop?
I personally use Arcic MX-4
Can I use the coating also for a PS5 when I removed the plastic part?
A TronicsFix video where Steve manages to repair laptops is a rare gift, and should be cherished! Glad you're breaking your curse of having trouble getting them working again!
Lol!
I have to contstantly clear the dust on my Razer. It gets super hot.
Of course, a i9 and 3080 ti mobile, is going to be a bit crispy.
Why a PS5 which doesn't usually move around needs a shield to avoid liquid metal to go everywhere and frying the motherboard but a laptop (which is supposed to move around and is carried on a backpack) doesn't need it?
Only just found out iFixit removed the kit I bought 2 years, weird, hopefully still Life Time Warranty
@12:45 you don't clean off the grease you left with your fingers from the flex end?
Modern laptop only screen are great
The fans are also a software fix.
Is putting liquid metal on the heatsink itself strictly for liquid metal? I've seen people only put thermal paste just on the CPU not the heatsink
Great Work Steve
Thanks 👍
liquid metal is good for thermal transfer, but otherwise is nasty stuff the thing that it's used for ps5 (due to thermal and space constrains, also probably to make planned obsolesce) does not mean is good for everything, there is compromises to make, and most of the times (99%) on computer's CPU and GPU good quality thermal paste is good enough without all the nasty things that liquid metal can do. If you use liquid metal on laptop, it would be nice to put some foam or similar material around the die to prevent liquid metal from spilling out as laptops are caried in various positions moved and tossed around.
I was one of those screaming at the screen "driver issue".
