Join me, as I take my family (Nandu and my mother) on a quick trip to Chennai yesterday afternoon (Nov 12 2022) to make the first ride from Bengaluru to Chennai on this train. The inaugaral train ride was special and I share my journey with you folks

What is the cost of Vande Bharat Express?
The Vande Bharat Express is part of the 75 such trains expected to be running all across India by the end of 2023. For passengers travelling from Chennai Central railway station to Mysuru, the fare will be ₹1,200 for economy and ₹2,295 for executive class.
Is sleeper is available in Vande Bharat Express?
Vande Bharat Express Route List does not so far have Sleeping facility. But I hear news reports saying sleeper coaches will also be available in Vande Bharat Train.
Is food included in Vande Bharat Express ticket?
Food is included in the ticket. From Bangalore it costs 940 Rs to Chennai. But you also have the option of not having food. If you take this train from Mysore you have lunch served. From Bangalore to Chennai you have a sweet (Soan Papdi), Tea/Coffee and a Samosa
The new catering charges will be applicable on all the premium trains including Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani Express, Vande Bharat Express, Tejas Express, Shatabdi Express and Duronto Express.
How much time does Vande Bharat take?

I still struggle to understand why many of these trains have half the seats facing a different direction in each coach. Same thing in double decker too. I personally hate traveling backwards 😄
I think they feel it's a novelty and can be priced at a premium. IRCTC has been into dynamically pricing tickets for a bit now. Now the turn is full 360 degrees for Vande Bharat EC Class

So why would anyone prefer this train? Only speed? It's a lot costlier than evening shatabdi (dynamic fare only adds up towards the end for shatabdi), underwhelming catering, and odd start timing at ~3 pm. Every single railfan on many forums have suggested why not reverse schedules- 5.50 am start at mysore, reach bangalore at 8am and reach chennai by 12.35pm (I've calculated actual duration through irctc website). People who have to travel far to reach KSR bengaluru station will have plenty more time, plus there can be regular tiffen catering similar to morning shatabdi, passengers can reach at the right time at chennai meaning they can go home by 2pm or so and have lunch. And come to think of it, what is the point of having so many afternoon trains from bengaluru to chennai? There's Brindavan, Double decker and even mysore-chennai shatabdi...why another train needed?
While on the return Chennai to Bangalore it can start at 1.15pm and reach KSR bengaluru at 5.40pm followed by mysore at 7.40pm...and the catering you were served in this journey can be implemented in chennai to mysore side in my example and makes a lot more sense. People will be able to travel home and reach at modest times. At 5.50am start in Chennai how will everyone travel to the railway station so early? Most of the times autos won't ply at 4 or 4.30am onwards to reach the station.
And there's been so much backlash from regular commuters on local trains who say that they are made to wait too long most of the days to allow vande bharat and shatabdi to overtake in the mornings in chennai and afternoons/evenings in mysore and bengaluru respectively.
By having this schedule I've mentioned above, anyway from mysore to bengaluru/chennai the train is quite vacant. Most of passengers board at KSR bengaluru. So 5.50am in mysore is not a huge inconvenience consdering the railway station is well within the centre limits of city and is easily accessible and the train won't disturb local trains starting post 6am. In the opposite direction, we've never ever had decent train timings from chennai to bangalore in the afternoons/evenings as they either inconvenience lunch time or the later ones like Lalbagh and Shatabdi reach bengaluru too late in the night.
I would say this is a symptom of hype and commercialisation and no real convenience to regular commuters. I feel like this is going to end up in either shatabdi or this being cancelled or irregularly rescheduled which is going to be chaos. According to me the train is good infra but schedule is messed up badly.
Publicity for this Vande Bharat Trains unheard of, as though there was no trains before the introduction of this series. Rajdhani and Shatabdhi were introduced without any fanfare.

Train is bit above average in speed. Where to saves time is due to almost non stop approach. No wasting time in between.
Also was the train departure at 2:55? Did it leave exactly at that time?

I booked CC class. It should be okay as long as they have someone to accompany them as the doors close on its own. Older people may panic

Food is the only bummer on this train. Maybe starting day troubles. Shatabdi is a well oiled machine for experience. This has set the platform for semi-bullet train experience for operating at 160 KMPH once the track related enhancements are made
Do we get an option to choose the seats while booking or is it assigned automatically? If we book for 4 people under one PNR, then will the seats be assigned together (in same row)? Any idea? Pls advise.
Seats are assigned automatically. You have the option to book tickets together in IRCTC

Eunice it depends. If it's the day trains that are fast and air conditioned then Shatabdi ranges between 700 and 1000 as dynamic pricing applies on the fares. The Vande Bharat trains are 940 rs.

No. It reaches before dinner time around 730 pm. The train serves lunch at Mysore and Tea/snacks 1 hour after Bangalore
