Was he actually an Olympic runner? The English Wikipedia article says that his father was an amateur sprinter, without giving further details. The Greek Wikipedia doesn't mention Vangelis' parents at all.
Great video which suddenly reminded me of a family story. My grandfather was a tutor and later the principle at the Lancashire Independent College (a Congregational College) from 1930ish and as a result was visited by missionaries from time to time. Eric Liddell visited him and bounced my father (and his twin sister) on his knee! They were born in 1933, so I guess it must have been within a couple of years of that :-) Happy memories of my dear dad - thank you! Rick
As someone who went to St Andrews for uni, now lives just outside Edinburgh and has only once watched Chariots of Fire on a plane solely to see that opening scene, I had no idea about any of this but was very glad to learn!
There's a big difference between what we think of as a _participation medal_ and the third medal in this collection. With few exceptions, just making an Olympic team is the crowning achievement of the vast majority of the athletes that do it.
"Participation medal" is something that has been bizarrely distorted by the right-wing media world today. So what "we" think of as a participation medal is not what some others think or thought of one.
Yes, i found that very glossed over. I understand editing for time, but when I read the caption I immediately thought “What?!?! An interment camp???” Seems like a big thing to neglect to mention beyond a simple footnote.
Of course YOU would enjoy rewriting history. Eric Little didn't "die in china". He was murdered by the Japanese while he was preaching G-d's word. But you two history deniers try to change hide the facts.
You have a talent for making interesting videos about any subject whatsoever. I don't like sports. I know nothing about the Olympics. But still this video was very entertaining.
I haven’t seen the film a hundred times, but somewhere between five and fifteen. It’s been probably fifteen or more years since last time, so I’m thinking I’m due for another watch.
Great video and a nice take on this subject. But I do have to say that your beach running shot was amazingly cheesy. 😁 Redeemed somewhat by the closing.
Brady said what I was thinking: That medal doesn't look very gold! But *why* doesn't the medal look very gold???? where's the follow-up hard-hitting journalism from Mr. Periodic Videos??
I too was a runner, a hurdle jumper, extremely strong religious conviction against divorce, born on same day as Eric, a few years after his death, suffered a great deal of childhood hunger, very drawn to all scripture mention of chariots of fire, and this is my heart song that I've been humming and adding words of gratitude and love to God Almighty for giving me endurance to continue forward in my Christ-walk. I too have a degree in science. Thank you for sharing this documentary. I know Eric feels greatly honored and loved
Is Brady’s pronunciation of “sixth” just after 4:00 an accent thing or did his tongue just trip on its shoe laces? I swear he said sickth not sixth, and I’m wondering if this something weird from having an Aus and UK accent mashed together.
I can never see the beach scene anymore without thinking of Rowan Atkinson. BTW, Is there any relation between Eric Liddell and Alice Liddell? Or is it a common surname in the U.K.?
Of no connection. Eric's ancestors were farmers in Killearn, Scotland. Alice's ancestors were English peerage, the Baronets Liddell (created Baronets by Charles I).
I thought for a moment that it was because gold medals weren't a thing. But then I checked again: They were introduced in 1904. Prior to that, the winner actually received a silver medal.
Rest in Peace to Ian Charleson. He gave a great, inspiring performance.
Fun fact: The musical score written by Vangelis was originally a tribute to Vangelis' father who was an Olympic runner.
Thank you! That was a fun fact.
The director wanted initially another song for the running scene (L Enfant). Vangelis convinced him that he can make something better

@@renerpho
Only amateurs were allowed to participate in the Olympics back then.
@@renerphoI don’t believe Vangelis ever said his father, Ulysses Papathanassiou, was an Olympic runner. Rather he was “a runner”.

Best channel on youtube, now with RUNNING BRADY
As someone who went to St Andrews for uni, now lives just outside Edinburgh and has only once watched Chariots of Fire on a plane solely to see that opening scene, I had no idea about any of this but was very glad to learn!
Thank you for sharing an object that has such personal fascination for you-a very compelling video
It's weird seeing the thing you've seen referenced hundreds of times without context.
Excellent collection Brady!
This channel not having a sub count in the multi millions is one of the greatest tragedies ever to occur on this platform

I love that the Sikh fellow on the athletics team is named "Joginder"
I wonder why he would choose to "jog in there" … 🙃
I'd like to hear more about his internment by the Japanese in WWII.
Yes, i found that very glossed over. I understand editing for time, but when I read the caption I immediately thought “What?!?! An interment camp???” Seems like a big thing to neglect to mention beyond a simple footnote.
Wow so cool that you got to run on that beach! Really awesome
I really enjoyed this, thank you.

One of my favourite films too and a great true story.
That was a solid recreation of the scene!
The Numberphile Hitomezashi Stitch Patterns video was actually shot in the Eric Liddel centre in Edinburgh.
Such a good film!
And the medals keep on coming!
Life Of Brian is my favourite film, that location would be great to see.
Really cool, fun video. Thank you for bringing it to us
Great video, docturr
Ah, I just listened Unmade Podcast episode few days ago where this film was mentioned!👍
I haven’t seen the film a hundred times, but somewhere between five and fifteen. It’s been probably fifteen or more years since last time, so I’m thinking I’m due for another watch.
That scene will never be the same again as I'm now expecting Mr. Bean to show up.
You're not the only one.......
That music must have been used in some NES game (I remember it so clearly)
Does anyone know which?
qwop
Track & Field
Glad that the white gloves can be used to keep hands warm.
What a fun channel :)
When I hear this music, I reminded of Mr. Bean riding a car
Aw, man. He died 2 months before VE day. That's a bummer. Didn't get to see the end of WWII. Well, I guess being dead is a bigger bummer.
Great video and a nice take on this subject. But I do have to say that your beach running shot was amazingly cheesy. 😁 Redeemed somewhat by the closing.
Fun fact, Australia is one of only five countries to have competed in every modern summer Olympics
Six, if you count Switzerland, 1956. A bit of a strange story.
My first thought was, "what, Brady won an olympic medal in addition to the medal of the Order?"
Eric Liddell looks like Andy Samberg.
Wow, that is actually uncanny
Brady said what I was thinking: That medal doesn't look very gold! But *why* doesn't the medal look very gold???? where's the follow-up hard-hitting journalism from Mr. Periodic Videos??
Brady ALWAYS asks the question I'm thinking. Another commenter said that the medals were actually goldplated silver.
Any relation to Alice Liddell, daughter of Henry Liddell?
No. Completely different heritage. Eric Liddell's ancestors were working class and farmers in Scotland.
Not often when the actual person is better looking than their Hollywood stand in.
Hip hit hurt haran !

"Scotch" is famously whisky, eggs or mist ;-)
@bad1dobby fair enough, but I would argue not quite so famous…
Don't forget the chilli!
@@Shr3dward how could I forget the Bonnet 🤦♂️ tasty tasty pain 🌶❣

The reason the gold medal was silver with gold is that, since 1912, gold medals have been made of gold plated silver.
I thought for a moment that it was because gold medals weren't a thing. But then I checked again: They were introduced in 1904. Prior to that, the winner actually received a silver medal.
Brady was really having fun. Running barefoot
I actually haven’t seen the movie/scene. But I did see a parody of it by Mr. Bean somewhere 😂
2012 London Olympics, Opening Ceremony.
I only have one question. Was this before or after the spray tan?
I have seen this scene, but Mr Bean was in it 😬
Is your second favorite movie is the one about paint drying?
