    There are several kihon and waza in the Edo branch of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu that utilize a left hand draw. Whoever says that left hand techniques don't exist is clearly uneducated in koryu sword styles.

    My teacher used to say "there are no left handed swordsmen in Japan....and that is why we train both hands...just in case."
    Necessity overrides convention.

    Seriously why is this evan a debate? No documents needed. In a fight you do What you must. Would Trained samurajs not do it? Would they prefer dying befor using the ”wrong” hand?

    Yes, as I said, I was active in the Bujinkan for many years, and have already practiced the technique myself, but it just makes little sense, since I am armed with katana, of course, the weapon first.

    Perhaps Hatsumi Sensei is just showing what's "possible", but if someone is wearing a weapon it would be safest to assume they know how to use it. Thus, if you can sneak up behind them (which you probably did because they have a weapon) you're probably not going to grab them from behind in a way that allows their arms to move about and access the weapon, as was seen here. This grab was completely ineffective and might only be done by an untrained attacker. Is it possible? Yes, but highly unlikely, given that a tanto could be accessed easier than a sword. If you have to deal with an armed opponent you're going to deal with the weapon, their ability to use the weapon, or end their life quickly from behind. As for left-handed swordsmen, it is a known fact that they existed (Komagawa Kaishin-ryu, for example - Komagawa Torozaemon was left handed). Any style that uses two weapons at one time trains in drawing the tanto or wakizashi with the left hand and using weapons interchangeably in both hands. If one arm is injured, you have to have trained to use the other. Left-handed weapon draws are no shocker.

    Out of curiosity, is this just a general share? If that is the case, then a most interesting interpretation and contribution! There is another from Katori Shinto Ryu that I find is one of my favourites against a bear hug from behind (8:13):
    ua-cam.com/video/KpSRL81wBJc/v-deo.html
    If it is to provide evidence for the left handed sword draw you did in a past video, then I am not at the moment seeing the relevance as:
    1) he does the draw in a very different method to the way you demonstrate. Only thing in common is using the left hand. Also, this draw is against a very different grab to the one that is in the document you posit and in your past left-hand-draw video.
    2) I most certainly agree that left handed draws existed; my disagreement was more on how you were doing it. You admitted that the translated historical document that explains the left handed draw only explains two things: exhale sharply and draw with the left hand to strike the opponent. It does not say how to orientate your hand and whether to thrust or cut (ua-cam.com/video/VN21ZvjwJ78/v-deo.html 12:18)
    If, however, you are purely sharing the video for general sharing purposes then please ignore my two points above.

    • @igakokashinobi
      @igakokashinobi 3 роки тому

      I think you are being too limited in your view of this technique.
      A warrior/samurai would likely not using this type of draw on the battlefield. More likely when they are traveling around or are taken by surprise in their day to day life. The draw itself seems to work from the principle that armour is not being worn and that the sword is slung in the obi with the blade facing upwards.
      With this reasoning it makes more sense that way. It is more for Self protection technique I think.
      That is only speculation on my part but if you where to attempt this with both parties in armour it would be difficult for both the attacker and the defender.
      The Dou, kusazuri and haidate would provide excellent protection from this type of blind backwords stab.
      Also considering the sword would be slung in the traditional Tachi fittings with the blade facing downwards suspended by a cord at the waist makes it different also in how the sword would be drawn.

    what dies it mean to me?

    • @MrShadeofMyself
      @MrShadeofMyself 3 роки тому

      It means, like me sou will have a hard time in training because no training is made to train left against right handed swordsmen.
      So you will be forced to train with your right side until you feel comfy with it and will loose the ability to hold your sword with the left hand as a main hand if you can't find a training partner for it.
