Fall Motorcycle Camping Trip to the Oregon Coast on the Honda CB500X

- The summer may be over, but that won't stop Tim and I from getting out for a cold weather motorcycle camping trip, this time on my brother's 2020 Honda CB500X. What better way to test out the Honda CB500x and its adventure motorcycle capabilities than a fall motorcycle camping trip to the Oregon coast?
In this video, Tim and I head over to do some moto camping at Beverly Beach State Park in Newport, Oregon. We have dinner and a few beers at the Rogue Brewery in Newport, then head back for an evening of moto camping adventure and fireside shenanigans.
The Honda CB500x turned out to be a great adv bike for a motocamping trip like this one. It's easy to ride and had no problem getting me up and over the mountain as well as carrying all of my motorcycle camping gear.
I hope you enjoy this awesome Honda CB500X adventure!

Hey bro. I’m about 350 lbs and want to ride a bike and love what I see with the CB 500X but worry that I’m too big for it. I just want something with a comfortable seat and is a Honda
Here’s a long story. I live out East. Two years ago my buddy and I decided to buy “cheap” bikes to keep out West for fly-and-rides, mostly remote BDR style. The criteria included reliability, good dealer network, good fuel range, simple, EFI preferred, 400 lb-ish. I didn’t want to send my Desert Sled or Well ridden and beloved Guzzi Stelvio out West. The CB500X and DR650 were in the short list. A used ‘19 Cb500x non-ABS came up for sale, i bought it. My buddy got a Himalayan, new.
Outfitted the CB with Rally Raid suspension, pivot pegs, a skid plate, and made some custom pannier racks for it.
So far we’ve done about 4000 miles out West including the Northern TAT spur Minnesota to WY, into Idaho and Montana. WYBDR and CO.
After leaving the CB in storage out west, I was actually starting to miss it at Home. Hard to believe but I found and bought another 2019 CB500X. And after I did I found the Ducati and Guzzi weren’t getting ridden much. So I sold them both.
The CB isnt fast but I wasn’t missing the 1200cc power. The CB has excellent MPG. Up to 80MPG with street tires and 65MPG with knobbies and therefore 250-300 mile range. Its EFI. Can cruise then highway at 80 of need be. It can go offroad. Its reliable. A good commuter. The stock wheels have yet to fail in the rough stuff. Its simple (no silly rider modes). Rider modes are in your wrist. Its easy to pick up when dropped. Lets face it Im almost 50 and more interested in the journey than the race.
Though its a “beginner” bike it keeps up just fine with bikes 3 times the cost.
I’d like to see Honda perfect this bike. Keep it simple (no fancy electronics), improve the dash display and dampen the bar vibration. Even better change the motor to a 270 crankshaft.
Happy trails.
Winter camping vids are great.
Tim is good people.
I've owned my CB500X for 2 years, and have been very impressed with it. This bike is better on the pavement than I expected, and it's easily taken everything I have put it through off-road. Like you said, it's extremely easy to ride and a ton of fun for what you pay.
Your lucky to have a friend and riding partner like TIM !
Good fire, good beer, good company: All the things needed for a good campout!
You're letting the secret out. You can camp in the winter on the coast. You can avoid the crowds and it doesn't get that cold.
Don't tell anyone.
@@DorkintheRoad it's just between you, me, and the English speaking world.
Don't worry. Nobody reads this.
Lol I’m familiar with being weight challenged. I too blossomed this summer and my Klim gear was a bit tight. Luckily I kept my Battleborn A.R.C. Gear. For the money it’s darn hard to beat. Great winter fall gear. Not so great in summer. Just did half the MABDR before we got froze and snowed out. Rode for 2 days in torrential downpours from the remnants of the last hurricane that hit Florida. Good gear. Oh and great beer selection as always. Go coors!!!
Terrific Video. I don't think I have commented before so I want to do it now. In 2020, bored with staying away from people I started following your channel and As the Magpie Flies (Amanda is my hero). You helped me get through those down days of winter and isolation. Thank you.
In this vid I like that you are upfront about gaining weight and buying less expensive gear to get through rather than replacing you KLIM. I love the KLIM products but can't afford them - I would invest in them if my weight didn't fluctuate constantly. It was nice to see you understand that fluctuation thing. Positive thoughts to you that you are able to get back into your KLIM for the next riding season.
As I am sitting her with about 4" of snow on the ground, still snowing and the wind blowing it warmed my soul to watch your camping vid. Tim does a great camp fire.
Thanks again, keep the good stuff coming.
My takeaways from this video: $500 fleece. Probably extra warm. 🤷
Get the dead guy burger the next time I'm at Rogue. The 500x doesn't suck.
Lithium batteries still aren't the answer.
Good video. Can't wait to see you camp again some other Wednesday.
Good video. Liked the quick impression of the CB500. No need to go into detail since it’s been around for awhile. Very disappointed we didn’t see a run around with the rain fly. After all you are on a CB 500 like Amanda 🤣 Like Tim in the videos, seems like a really cool guy. Just wanted to say you do inspire people to ride. My Buddy was riding back from Nor-Cal and asked me to meet him halfway at Victorville CA and ride home to Phoenix, 700 miles round trip. Now he rides a 1000 Versys so there is never any dirt but we avoided the interstate and skirted the edge of Joshua Tree National Monument. We saw some very cool stuff. Rode through a sand storm which was a first. All that being said I didn’t really want to go, but I said, “what would Ben do” or WWBD. So I got of my but and did the ride and was so glad I did. Thanks for the motivation and keep on keeping on 👍
Just picked up my Big Agnes tent from Motocamp nerds Black Friday sale. Already arrived today. Can’t wait to get home and open it.
You should do a full build walk around on Tim’s bike!
I think it's awesome that you smoke cigars on your channel, love the camping videos, inspires me to get out there and do the same, keep up the good work
Good video. Always extra fun when your friend Tim joins😊
I think camping/riding with you two would be a blast. Some of your best vids IMO are of you 2 out having fun and camping.
Fall on the coast can have some of the best weather, just the cold nights. Also, Tim's bike decorations are the hero of this video, I dig it. +1 for Grace's channel, she is making awesome content, she should have 10x the subs and views as she is getting, nice shout-out.
I work at that brewery! Next time you're here, stop in the production office, would love to give you a tour of the place!
That would be amazing!
@@DorkintheRoad Let me know my dude, will get you taken care of!
First like. Yeah for me. Tim the Master Chef.
I love the banter Ben and Tim have... good stuff :)
Upgrade suspension, switch to spoked wheels, add crash bars and skid plate and the CB500X is a quite capable ADV bike. It’s one of the mainstay bikes for Ride Adv, probably because of its approachable height and power delivery plus, as you said, it’s bulletproof reliability.
All in all, great video and it looked like a fun camp. Glad Tim got out alive! 😂🤣✌️
With all those mods, you might as well get another bike
Great video. Loved the boat scene and rippley water cuts. I'm drooling over that burger - whatever the heck it was. Cool-dude dialog, can't get enough of you and your posse chatting it up.
Love to see you are getting back to the basic's. Great Vid
Great video as usual. I love how super chill Tim is, even when the battery goes tits up. Rogue never disappoints. South Beach is also a great campground just a few miles south of Beverly, give it a whirl. Who knows, maybe you already have. Back to work with thoughts of riding. Peace.
I've been to South Beach. It's great but too far from the ocean and too much of a playground vibe for me ;)
Great video, would love to see more camping trips with Tim.
Fun one man - I like your natural and unpretentious style
Great intro!!
I like how you light your fire like a caveman but your cigar like a person from the future.
Brew Pubs are one of the best parts of traveling.
I can't believe you abandoned Tim, how could you?! Also, as someone starting to get old and hunch and now only standing at 6'4"... That 500x is the most comfortable smaller cc bike I've ridden to date. So short and tall new riders should really consider it as a first bike. I was really impressed while riding it the one time I did.
When we left port orford at the end of the TAT we rode up 101 to Newport then headed to Eugene to gas up and check our bikes over before the big push back to eastern NC. Love the Oregon coast. Breath taking.
A+ Vid. Great Ocean Views.
Very good video. Just found your channel after watching some Big Rock Moto. I have subscribed! I also looked at the Honda but decided on the 390 KTM Adventure. Both are great machines, the KTM just fit my needs a little better. I always laugh when folks talk about the 19" tires and cast rims. I had the same concerns until watching a few UA-camrs from India punish the 390 on some hardcore trails with no issue. I have completed 2 BDRs and ridden many trails and forest roads on my KTM with no issues. I like the fact that these type of machines can handle my oof-road needs and do a pretty good job dicing up some tarmac. Keep up the great work and have a fantastic holiday season.
Lol, less people generally means, better people... At least that is the way it is in my town, community, etc.
I like dual sport videos, and since I always catch one somewhere in the background of your videos, I still watch. Lol.
Tim will never go camping with you again, lol . And the smoked Swedish fish 😆 great idea though
I'm north of Waldport on the coast
We had snow today in Newport it was over quick but snow
try South Beach fish market deli sometime
I’m in a cast right now, glad to see you’re out having a good time. Tell us some more what you think of that CBX 500
Beverly Beach is my favorite campground on the Oregon coast. Go there every chance I get👍
You never leave your wingman!
That looks like an awesome campground. 750 mile ride for me.
I almost bought the CB. It was going to be my first ADV bike but not first bike. A lot of the reasons you cited as shortcomings for off road were the same reasons I didn't get it.
Surprised that you were able to get anything recorded indoors at Rogue. Sounded like The Doors were playing pretty loudly but you made it work. 😂
Love the camping videos fwiw.
It just takes some creative editing. Just can't let too much play at once. ;)
I really have been eyeing the CB500X. Not sure yet, but thinking hard about trading my KLX300 for one. Tough choice, I love all of them lol.
It's a great bike, truly underrated. Prices are going up on them unfortunately. Can do highway no problem, offroad as much as your skill level can handle but fireroads all day for sure, amazing mpg and probably one of the best if not the best engines on an adv bike. Seriously, good luck finding a problem with them.
I ride Corvallis to Coast 1-2 times a month. Before my klr blew up I would make the scenic route my standard. Through Newport to Toledo to Elk City to Harlan behind Blodgett and either up to Woods Creek or down to Harrs Bridge. Nothing technical but mostly gravel and without any traffic. Only takes an extra 45 minutes as long as you can resist the urge to explore.
We almost went that way but with so little daylight I didn't want to take the extra time.
Here's a tip to my fellow t7 owner. I can fit three bundles of wood on my tusk rear rack. And if I had longer straps I'd probably be able to stack more lol. I've always wanted to check out the rogue brewery I really like their beer. Whenever I get the flights I usually start from the lightest beer and work my way to the darkest I feel like the dark ones linger and taint your taste buds. What was up with that burger? Looks like the bun was burnt. Was it some kind of special bun? Thanks for making such great content I really enjoy watching your channel. I really love your witty / dorky personality. You seem like a great writing companion and if you ever find yourself in Arizona I'd love to join you on an adventure. 🍻
My wife and I stayed in that exact campsite. We haven't tried the yurts but the campground is sweet
Thank you for the great video. Excellent review! I own the 2021 Yamaha T7 and love it. I have done the Idaho BDR and part of Wyoming on it. I am wanting to add another motorcycle for sports touring and a little off road ability when needed. Would the Norden 901 fit this desire in your opinion & experience? Example - a 500 mile on the T7 two days in a row on the highway to get to the Idaho BDR (same back home) with no cruise control each day was a little brutal and much over 70 MPH seemed to add consistent vibration in handle bars. However, the T7 once on the Idaho BDR & Wyoming (dirt) was perfect! Thanks again for excellent vids! Brent
There's too much overlap between the T7 and Norden, in my opinion. They do almost all the same things. You'd be better off selling the Tenere and buying a Norden for longer trips and a dual sport or a KTM 690 for shorter ones, honestly.
I wonder what Tim thinks of his Sand 4! I want to get one.
How was the pocket fish 🐟 🤔 😂
The rally raid kit really wakes up the potential of the cb500x. But it's a great bike regardless. Definitely I would say lacks a bit of power for me at least, but it also cost me half the price of a tenere 700 sooooo.
Good channel!
I've got a 2016 CB500X with aftermarket suspension and a few other goodies. I love the bike, but to be clear about what its best used for- 70% pavement- 30% dirt (IMO). It's smooth, quiet and the bonus of great gas mileage. If you can swing it, I recommend having one or two more specialty oriented bikes in your stable too.
Camping in the winter- there are places (like the Oregon coast) that maintain pretty mild temperatures. That's not the problem. The problem is dealing with 14 hours of darkness. Screw that; I can wait until springtime.
Oh, and the weight thing- there IS another option besides buying new clothes :-)
Cheers,
70% pavement 30% dirt is a great analysis for sure. Could do maybe more than 30% dirt but your skills better be there haha
I’ve learned by now that if a reviewer says: “yeah it’ll do highway” that means the bike absolutely sucks on the highway. 😂
Well not what I meant in this case, but yeah I get what you're saying.
That video with Steve Wallace was great, that abandoned power station is great if your into graffiti.
Cowboy KoolAid.. love it ol Johnny paycheck
Florida boy has never seen the Oregon Coast, but if I continue, I will.
It's gorgeous here. Don't tell anyone ;)
I normally agree with most of what you say.. my cb500x has been over 25 offroad Colorado mountain passes. Gnarly mountain passes. It does everything and laughs. The cast wheels have had zero issue in any way... Days on baby head trails they are light and tubeless. Suspension mods and tires? There is nowhere it won't go. It's down played and that's ignorant. Oh.. and they are 7299 +++++ unfortunately.
LOL at the Steve reference.
Wait wait…..we’re riding with Nathan on the ORBDR next year……will we need a waiver? Or just increase life insurance….
Both would be wise.
Was that dryer lint used to start the fire?
Wait a minute.... are you brothers with "Oregon Motorcycle"? I started watching you when you had a 250L and started watching him when I was looking at (and after) buying my 500x.
"My subs are better people" - subbed.
If you have the chance to try the ktm 490 and the caballero 700 cc , i would like your feetback , thx
I traveled south to north up the OR coast. Unfortunately it was at night. I must do it again in the daylight. By the way when you went into town for lunch and get some "stuff", what did ya get? 😊
The Coors Lights I was drinking when we got back to camp, oh and Tim's Swedish Fish
@@DorkintheRoad🤪 Hmmm, edible gummy fish??? I enjoy your videos. 👍
Ok wait now. Where’s Beards? You did a lot of Camping together but now Steve? Don’t get me wrong, love Steve but bring Beards back. 😂
Let’s get a group of us Oregonians together to,do the OBDR together with Nathan. Oh love my 0° bag by Big Agnes. Great bag Dork
Trav is not always available on a Wednesday and he lives a lot further away than Tim.
@@DorkintheRoad I see. Love your videos together and adventures. Tim seems to be a really cool guy and he’ll of a rider. Keep us your good work and Merry Christmas
Can we all agree that daylight is more useful at the end of the day than at the start of the day? Just leave it on DST!
agreed.
You’ve accumulated a lot of belly lint (fire starters)in a short time of wearing it the new gear 😂😂😂
I'm resourceful like that (also that was Tim, lol)
I would have left him too, as always great video. I am curious, is the CB500 fun to ride, does it have that pure enjoyment quality?
Yes very fun
@@DorkintheRoad Fun as in "this specific bike is fun" or fun as in "bikes are fun to ride"?
I have a 2019 cb500x and it is a great fun to ride extremely versatile bike, gets 65 to 72 mpg and a long range. It's faults: not real good over 60 mph because the engine gets a bit viby and if you want to carve corners with sport bikes you will want to make some upgrades...it's good up to about 8/10th's pace but doesn't like being pushed to the limit. Great for back-road travel and commuting, pretty much sucks on the interstate compared to say for instance most 750cc bikes or bigger.
The 500x is prob one of the most underrated bikes for adv riding I don’t know why everyone gets all hung up over cast wheels and the front not being 21”. It can go anywhere any other street legal bike can go
OK, I'm back I forgot to like the video the first time. OK bye. 😁👍
What’s your Untappd handle?
Man, so jealous. Oregon coast camping is definitely some of my favorite. Sitting out this winter riding season due to injury but can't wait to get back out there when spring comes around.
Where did you start from?
I couldn't find a CB500X anywhere near Tri-Cities Washington so I went with a KTM 390 Adventure. How do you like the Honda vs the other small Adventure bikes?
Shame I didn't see you and say hello.
Long term review of the Honda CB500X ??
Are you going to mod that CB500X? I’ve seen a few videos of people riding them off-road. Maybe you don’t want to spend the money and maybe your brother wants to keep it stock?
Thinking about adding some protection and stuff, but no plans to mod the suspension or engine.
Friends don't leave friends behind. Best friends say figure it out bud I got things to do and your time is up. I'll come back later if and when I can or care lmfao. It works for Clarkson, May, and Hammond, and it works for my group too. Might as well work for you.
How do the supple gloves feel when they are moist?
Exactly how you imagine...
What is going on in this comment? Moist supple gloves? 😂
Ah, I hadn’t gotten that far in the video when I commented.
The gloves sound awesome actually because heated grips save souls. 😂
Can you ride into the beach?
Not here. Further north you can.
how much do you weigh now?
What kind of bike is Tim riding? Anyone know?
KTM 500 EXC.
@@markflaugh2293 thanks!
I'm a goober. I thought "sea to summit" products was called "cedar summit"
No yurt?
Not this time ;)
I don't want to be hungover 😭😭 right..
And today's episode is brought to you by AGM batteries which might be heavy but aren't fussy at all about cold weather the way LiPo batteries are. Glad Tim got home OK. 😉👍
I find it hilarious that you live in the Northwest and with all those trees you still choose to sleep in a tent instead of a hammock, you ground dwellers are savages.
I'm a stomach sleeper. Kinda hard to pull that off in a hammock.
@@DorkintheRoad NOPE, not if you have the right hammock….check out the Haven Tent hammock, I have one and many of my friends have one and we all are side sleepers or stomach sleepers
Sorry Dork, you lost me with your Burnside replica getto backyard camp and Chynese junk…vaya con dios
okay then. Not sure why that means you can't watch my other content, but to each their own, I guess.
