Corruption and Scandal: Crisis in Moldova (Dispatch 1)

  • Moldovans have been protesting against their government for months. They allege that their leaders are deeply corrupted after a billion-dollar banking scandal hit the country in 2015. The former prime minister, Vlad Filat, was arrested and detained for suspected involvement.
    Pro-European and pro-Russian parties are working together to lead the protests. They demand that the prime minister step down, and that the government hold early elections. But given the influence of powerful oligarchs in the country, it's far from certain whether new leadership would even bring real change.
    VICE News went to Moldova to speak to the opposition parties and find out how the theft of $1 billion from the banking system is affecting people in this impoverished country.

    As a Moldovan citizen I am totally dissapointed and frustrated with the situation in my country. It has become really difficult to SURVIVE(forget about living) from a financial point of view. If you compare the cost of living and the salaries people get, you will never be able to figure out how do they make it work. It is ridiculous.
    Now, I have lived in London, England for about four years and I've seen how a human being is supposed to live and what a healthy society looks and feels like. With that being said, I realise that Moldova is INCREDIBLY FAR from that and, what's even worse, it will not be better for a LOOOOOOONG time, because the virus of corruption is so deep in this nation's mentality, it's hard to imagine it will ever change.
    Moldova, today, is a really sad story...

      In my county we collect money for poor elderly Moldovan people so there houses get fixed or they get a operation or so. This is unacceptable, money must go to the people in need not some rich elite! Stop corruption!

      +92axelmaster Do you think 1/6 out of GDP stolen is a lot? Try 2/3 for 10 years after WW2 from Romania by USSR. But Ilan Shor made a big hit if the reports are right. I think all sides wore involved. And in east Europe most of the GDP is stolen trough contracts with the state anyways.

    Wow, same vicious circle as in Ukraine: Opposition parties want the as they claim criminal government away and then they become criminals themselves.
    10:40 typical corrupt politician, when he is confronted with his criminal acitivities he starts talking about another politician of a different party who is more criminal..
    I really like the contrast the dispatch provides, first the older woman who is talking about her 35 Euro pension 3:50 and then the so-called "opposition party" politician who drives away in a brand new Range Rover 11:15 after the interview...
    I just truly feel sorry for the people who are suffering under such a corrupt government... there have to be fundamental changes in the political system.

      Population was conquered for 200 years, only two decades inside Romania, and before that, Principality of Moldova was the scene of wars for 600 years.
      They not have a democratic mentality, the people are very low if you draw a line, huge gaps, most of them don't know what they are as a nation, so they are very easy to rule and trick.

      Concern trolls who will ask : "oh but won't the two have problems afterwards?" are also on Russia's payroll.
      Russia will just *not let go*, and in Moldova they control the MEDIA, the politicians and pretty much everything stemming out from there.

    I am surprised how peaceful the protests are. I doesn't seem like it is really escalating, like it has in many other places. I hope this trend continuous, because it would show that the people are ready to be a proper democracy.
    I find it interesting how the parties being called pro-Russian claim they are not. I love the thought that they are pro-Moldovan, but it really makes me wonder what they really stand for. What is propaganda and what is not?

    • @DarkSideSixOfficial
      @DarkSideSixOfficial 8 років тому

      Two reasons. The two different pro-what ever groups, joined forces. Second, young kids have no business protesting, so there's less chance of molotov's and rocks being thrown. Elsewhere, there's always two groups arguing and then some kids of either side get rowdy, throw things, and it quickly causes government to get involved.

    • @VasileIuga
      @VasileIuga 8 років тому +12

      +apainintheaas They are not pro Moldovans-Moldova, because Moldovans are Romanians and that would be to ask a union with Romanians, Romania, to enter EU.
      They are pro Moldova as a Russian Province, where Moldova is Geographical term, not related to a population, where brainwash natives would be second class citizen as for 200 years, then in time, they would become Russians. So, of course he is „not” Pro Russian, he wants the status quo in place, that the majority of brainwash Romanians would remain in their fantasy world written by Soviet Propaganda machine.
      Republica Moldova is very weird place. This guy is just the moderate player of FSB, there is Dodon too who claims union with Euroasia to get votes from the colonists. So is a multistage trap.

    After 5 years, not much has changed. In 2016 Igor Dodon (seen at 6:48) become president. He joined forces with the same oligarchs he fought, in fact as a president, he took bribes from Plahotniuc. In 2019, the same man, with the help of the PAS and DA parties he "overthrew" Plahotniuc. After that, he took the "power" in his hands. In 2020, Moldovans, "said" clearly at the presidential elections, that they are sick and tired of his lies, and elected mrs. Maia Sandu as president. She seems as a Messiah... She is trying to end corruption in the state, and bring to justices all those who stole from the state. In July, we will have parliamentary election. We hope that changes will take place.

      +Azivegu transnistria is not the problem there .... moldova is in state of disaster since long ago same as ukraine infact everything that got touched by russia faded away retrograded socially and politically to extreme levels and all where driven in acute poverty the big mistake there was made by romanians which should have entered with the army in moldova and take control of the country before is not to late and it passes a no return point

    • @psiphi8648

      +Azivegu how should i say this in moldova the time stand still they did not made any move in the economic enviroment neither towards industrial sector or rerouting the economy to a service based one the only thing that keeps them alive is trading with romania more so the romanians facilitate their exports towards E.U but most of it is done directly with romania the problem is that romanians got feed up with the moldova problem + they are not easy on giving money anymore even though the country has a underground economy the size of sweden real economy

    The Pro-russians in Ukraine adopted this as a symbol, but the flyer clearly commemorates WW2 and not the War in Eastern Ukraine.

    In Moldova:
    We don't have our accent,because its not 'correct',in the television for example we can't talk with Moldavian accent,only with Romanian accent and in Russian.
    The nato is in moldova now (probably because of trasnistria)
    The poorest country in Europe
    The country is divided in two parts,who are with Europe and who are with Russia(i'm with Russia)
    The Romania want union now,some Moldavians want union because Moldova its poor,bich and romania is rich?I now that compared with Moldova,Romania is 100 times more rich,but that doesn't enough to make moldova a little bit rich.

      Who the heck stops you from speaking in the Moldavian dialect of Romanian?
      Who!?
      Most of Romanians of Moldova are speaking, in Romania!
      Maybe is not correct in Academia, science, because academic Romanian is the norm(a norm regulated by Transylvanian and Moldovan elites mainly), but that is another matter. Every state has an academic version of the language, because in science you want your work to be very precise and to not give unwanted interpretations!
      Tell me one country without an Academic language! Maybe is a tribal country without a close link to science, but for sure not a modern country.
      Your „Moldavian accent” is the Romanian accent in your region, there is no such as „Romanian accent” as a norm, because Romanian dialects are the Romanian!
      Maybe you don't know that well the Moldavian dialect and people are mad of your language mistakes, maybe your elites prefer the Academic version to denote their status, but that is not a ”ban”.
      You should respond in the Moldavian dialect to me, not English or Academic Romanian, and I would respond back with pleasure, not being even a Romanian from Moldova, Romania.

Moldova needs to keep being strong and retain it's Sovereignty and Special Culture.

    I am Moldovan and here is the situation about 62-68% are ethnic Romanian (Moldovan) the rest are Russian-Moldovans and Gagauz(which are Christian turks) now obviously Russians are always Russians and they will always want to be with Russia and the Gagauz to, now the problem is is that even though the ethnic Romanian (Moldovan) are in majority there is no unity among ourselves, half of the 62-68 percent identify as Romanians and the other half as Moldovan so that's why no one can get along.

    • @kinai01

    • @kinai01
      @kinai01 8 років тому

      +esirotinski The census was made by the national berou of statistics, did you read my first come in carefully, I specifically said that half of the Moldovans identify themselves as Romanians and the other half as Moldovans, if a Russian moves I live in Ukraine he's still a Russian because he speaks the same language and has the same culture. the same with Moldova and Romanians we are one people we speak one language we have the same customs and we have the same traditions now I'm well aware there are big half Moldova identified himself as strictly Moldova and they don't want anything to do with Romania I'm well aware and I know that really well, however it doesn't change the fact that we are one people with Romania

    • @kinai01
      @kinai01 8 років тому

      +esirotinski ok, my bad here sorry i was looking at the 2004 census results, so sorry, however the results will be most probably in the 60% for the 2014 accounting for the migration of Moldova to Europe, the point I'm making is I know that a big majority of Moldova identify themselves as strictly Moldovans I'm only saying is that regardless of how they identify themselves as the fact of the matter is we all come from the same people and nation we have a whole lot more in common with Romanians then we then we ever did with Russians, I'm not talking about unifying right now I personally think that is a very very stupid idea I just think it's good for them to know that we come and we are the same people with Romanians and we have a lot more in common with them then we ever did with the Russians
