The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

They sang and played in a period when there were hundreds of top talents. We were so spoiled that we barely noticed. And now, more than half a century later, we still look back to that time with awe, bewilderment, joy and memories full of emotion.

I never read a statement that summed up the music of the 60s and early 70s, which I thank God that I lived through. I can only add that I thought that the creativity and talent would blossom into more of the same that would last forever. A youthful fantasy that sadly was proven a deception.

I was born in 1960 and had several older siblings, two who were musicians, and a dad who listened to top 40 radio. I started paying attention to the radio and albums that were being played by late 1963, and once The Beatles came along I was hooked. I had no idea how lucky I was, that the most amazing era in rock history was going on. And it kept up into the 70's before times really started changing and the industry took over. The combination of talent and creativity in the industry was ridiculous. So many groundbreaking bands, so much versatility, so many bands with their own unique sound. We were incredibly lucky, and we'll have that music forever.

I was so fortunate to see the Lovin' Spoonful at the University of Dayton Fieldhouse in March of 1966 at the age of 16 after a quart (or two) of Stroh's beer. The electricity went out in the entire facility about 2/3's of the way through their set. Within 5 minutes, the Spoonful quickly converted to an acoustic set which was simply marvelous for the rest of the concert. John Sebastian was just so talented. Outstanding concert 55 years ago! I was in high school when this song was in the air waves. It's such an evoking song, but the line that says: "Go, and beat your crazy head against the sky; try, and see beyond the houses in your eyes. It's ok to shoot the moon," always fascinated me. Today, I am in my late 70s and over my college years and subsequently since then, I taught myself how to play the guitar. Darling Be Home Soon is one of my favorite songs to play and sing. Sometimes someone who was of music listening age in the late 60s will tell me (s)he remembers the song, and the memories it brings back.

No other band seemed to capture the vibe, and complexity of those times quite the same way. I bought every single they released. Their music is timeless. Nothing now even comes close... it's all just formulaic poppycock that sounds so banal and typical. Only a few artists have come close in decades. FUN FACT: The extra "Darlin'" after the orchestral break, before the final chorus, was initially a mistake by Sebastian, who came in early with the vocal. But upon playback they decided to keep the mistake in because it was a solid vocal take. It ended being a signature element of the song to the point where John ended up throwing it in on purpose during live shows to mimic the recorded version.

I have always loved the bridge in this song and always turn up the sound at this point. I do think it is the orchestration that makes this song (and many others) exude such warmth. And it is not often that such songs can be replicated live as recorded. So I totally did not expect a full orchestra to be on stage. The strings came in seemingly out of nowhere and just as John finishes "for the great relief of having you to talk to", the spotlight opens on the saxes, horns, etc. Wow! The merging of the two distinct sounds blend and build to a gorgeous crescendo. Just thrilling! I love how John pumps his fist in the air with glee - a great idea brought to life with tremendous success! If only Zal ... Oh, and that lady in the audience repeatedly shouting "Yeah!" ... to a ballad. I'm sure she was just excited ... as I would've been. Thank you so, so much for posting this for so many to enjoy!
