- In this video I discuses my DIY Overlanding Trailer build. It's bit different from my usual content, but falls in line with the overall theme of this channel. If you’re like me we like shooting, we like the tactical aspect, but we also like being prepared and that’s what this video is all about. That outdoor/survival aspect of our tactical knowledge base.
I’ll share with you how I build this overlanding trailer, the major components and tips I learn along the way. Hopefully this video inspires you to build your own trailer. re -- silicone sealer
2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle.
After using ('attempting to use'...) silicone sealer on other projects, but it always failed, we experimented with Vulcum 116.
Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard, summers up rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes, winters on isolated Baja beaches, our Vulcum 116 remains soft and pliable.

My problem with silicone:
Besides lack of stretch -- instant 'fail' on shifting components -- the stuff is impossible to remove.
I start with a putty-knife, move to a chisel, and after a couple-three months, I am considering something in the nuclear family.
That frustration is in addition to wear-n-tear on my financial and spiritual health, friends, family.
As you can imagine, I needed to cut back on all other activities to focus on the failed silicone... sleep, work...

Amazing build! What guage is your exteriror sheet metal? Steel? Or aluminum?
I wanted to keep it as compact as possible, but having that extra space for the kitchen is probably a good idea. I current use a plastic bin as my pantry but with the extra space it could all be together.
Thanks for the great advice.... Did you have any welding knowledge or anything like that? From the videos I've watched on just frame building it seems pretty straight forward. I have zero welding experience but like anything it can be learned on UA-cam. Also, roughly how tall is the box of the trailer? say from frame to top of the box... I would love to make something similar to TurtleBack in the rear with one large door that opens like yours but then have some drawers slide out for my Blackstone Griddle and maybe a sink if I get extra fancy.
@@jdpst20 very little welding experience. I’m pretty good at wood working so the cuts and framing is every similar. As for the welding youtube education. Started practicing on scrap metal then built a few small projects and jumped right into the trailer. The grinder will become your best friend “Lol” but you’ll for sure be an expert by the end of the build.

Love the video! Exactly what I'm currently making. QUESTION: Did you consider building the kitchen box out from the frame over the tires? I'm thinking about that to keep the space inside the trailer. More like Patriot trailers. Thoughts?

Yes, thanks, main tube down the middle (Spine)is 2x2, 10 gauge.

Glad you liked the video!!! Yes, send me your email as I be more than willing to share any info with you and/or lessons learn during the build. I designed this trailer from scratch so there was a lot of trial and error but I did documented most of the measurements once i got them where i wanted them.

Awesome trailer build! Currently doing my research now and deciding how large I want to build mine. I think my main priorities are a cool cooking area "love cooking" and hot shower capabilities. I am towing with a Land Rover Disco and the size of yours seems perfect. Not too big but not small where you could run out of storage. Question about the door system and body of the trailer... @ about the 3:14 mark the door frames, how are those engineered? I know if the one shot you show the whole frame laid out to where you will have storage doors ect. I'd like to try to replicate a Turtleback Expedition in a way that has a pass through door in the front or where I can throw a slider for fridge and then have my kitchen out back. Are there more details you can give on how you layout doors or compartment storage and how you attached the sheet metal to the frame and make it sealed from elements?
Once I framed out where the doors would be with the 1x2 square tubbing as in the video then welded 1inch angle iron around the frame to act as a stop and leave space for the gaskets. I built the doors out of 1/2 square tubing then cut sheet metal and riveted it to the door. (I tried welding the sheet metal at first but it was so thin it keep burning through) The hinges attach to the square tubbing where I drilled holes all the way through and welded the nuts to the inside so I could trim screws once it was installed and it wouldn’t hit the frame. Hope this help!!! Side note: I siliconed everything as I riveted to keep the water out and to date it still dry.
@@range11tactical16 Awesome... yeah I watched a few other videos too and paid close attention to inside the frame. Of the frame of say 2x2 yeah I saw essentially flat bar that was welded to the back of the frame which created a "stop" area for the door that you could then adhere the gaskets too. Then just make a door with a smaller frame and the sheet metal like you mentioned that rivet's into place. I think since it's painted and finished it looks way cleaner than I think it would look when doing that method, but raw material it's easier to understand the process. I'm hoping to have something like this started this upcoming spring. At least having a hot shower capabilities so the wife will wanna go out for more than 2 nights lol.

First the top/roof panel hangs over the edge about an inch on the front and back, everything was siliconed before assembling and the one inch angle peace close everything up. For the door i used car style gaskets attached to the doors, originally i had them on the frame and water would get in. Hope this helps.
Curious on what you used for floor ?
Just used sheet metal with a thick coat of truck bed lines on both sides once installed. So far it’s held up and no rust.
I know you gave dimensions in the beginning but what size is just the body of the trailer and total outside width of wheels it seems kinda heavy would you have built lighter to save weight?
Phil, the main frame of the trailer is 48” wide by 78” long (just the rectangular area not counting the tongue box area) once I built out to the fenders those were an extra 13” on each side, with the total with of the trailer being 6’-2.5” wide. As for the wheels, yes if you want, you could go lighter and that would be fine, I just wanted them to be the same as my truck that way as I get new tires I could just replace the trailer ones and if I need a spare, they would both be the same. Trailer it self is still pretty light, I can maneuver it around in my garage by hand even when fully loaded. Hope this helps!!!

Yes about that. It’s pretty light, I don’t even notice it when pulling and gas consumption is roughly the same. Good luck with yours!!!

The actual body or enclosed area is 4 by 6 feet over all including the fenders is 6.5 by 12. Hinges were bought on amazon. Hope this help!!
