      my dad used to drive the mini bus, picking up the stars for the Excelsior hotel. Probably about 50 years or so ago. He met Bruce Forsythe and Tommy Cooper. I can`t remember which one he said was genuine and nice and which one was up his own arse...but still a nice memory.

      It’s hard to become a trainee. Let alone a fully qualified driver. Takes about 8 months. Some places less, other places longer. Depends on your traction and routes. Very rewarding though. Just had an airline pilot start with us, he likes the trains better.

    To me, this always means the end of a long voyage. I travel from Oakland, California to Seattle, then on to Amsterdam and finally Birmingham. More time in the air, but a lot less hassle than having to cross London from Heathrow to Houston. My wife drops me off at Oakland, so I don't have to worry about beeing stuck on the San Francisco Bay Bridge, and I have friends waiting at Birmingham. A very relaxing journey.

    Can anyone explain the final anticlockwise turn to line her up?
    When I've flown in from the south to land on RW15, I always seem to have passed to the west of Birmingham and had a clockwise turn. I assumed that was to separate aircraft movements?

    • @Goproflying
      @Goproflying 6 років тому +3

      The published approach onto 15 from the south is all based off the Honiley VOR (6nm SE of the airport). You are supposed to follow an 11nm long arc 18nm from HON curving in a clockwise direction over the City until reaching a waypoint called CHASE, this is on a 330deg radial and 18nm from HON or apporox 10.5nm NW from the airport. In reality you never follow the procedure as you are normally given radar vectors in a straight line from HON usually in a direction of between 305-315 deg on a right hand downwind. ATC will still take you out as far as CHASE give or take a couple of miles and descend you down to 2,500ft before giving you a right turn to intercept the localiser just north of Sutton Coldfield, approx over Aldridge.
      Occasionally if ATC have departures heading out to the West, or as you say ATC are busy and wish to organise movements more efficiently they will stager the approaches on alternate left and right hand downwind. 90% of the time you will fly over the City, the rest of the time you will be sent out toward Tamworth. Obviously coming from the East we would prefer the latter, but outbound traffic below us dictates what happens. Hope this helped.

      LesD9 have you ever had it when you are landing and the plane goes really close to a road at EGBB? I think it’s a motorway but if you go along that road you get amazing plane views (you can’t stop there though but I saw an EK A380 on the road!!!!) also car park 5 is amazing for plane spotting

    • @LesD9
      @LesD9 5 років тому

      @@mysteryguy5177 You may mean the A45 to the south which was realigned when the runway was extended a few years ago. If you time it right, an even better view of landings can be had from the upper deck of the local bus services which use the service road inside the airport perimeter. You only get one shot each time tho'! You can see what I mean on one of the Street View series.

    I flew in Birmingham a couple of years back on an Emirates A380, the plane was slammed on the runway ?? and then the troubles started. Three other planes had landed just before us, so immigration was swamped took an hour to walk the tapes. The UK passport reader could not read my UK one year old UK passport, so had to queue for the number one eye ball guy, great that worked.
    Into luggage claim area, now Birmingham Airport has levied a 0ne pound charge to rent a luggage cart. Trouble is most passengers don't travel with one pound coins, so the smallest note I had was a twenty, posted into the machine and received twenty one pound coins, great. The cart attendant suggested I barter with the rest of the passengers to get rid of the coins. The other passengers only had dollars and after waiting in the passport line I was in no fit state to work out exchange rates, plus the comment from the cart guy sealed it when he said the machine will soon run out.
    The Emirates car guy even phoned me to ask where I was, it was taking that long.
    Once in the car the driver said there has been a lot of bother with the 1 pound cart charge, the attendants are like hawks outside the building snatching carts away just as you lift your luggage. To make sure an outgoing passenger doesn't get it.
    Now I prefer reginal airports to Heathrow as their a lot less walking, but who want's to stand around because of poor scheduled landing with an immigration set up that can't cope. I don't know what the air lines pay for landing/take offs but surly something could be worked out about the cart charge. Or has this come about with the cheapo airlines using Birmingham.????
