Bill is a national treasure. He wrote 5 of the most recognized and covered songs of our time. He only performed live a handful of times and this recording is probably the rarest of the rare. What a gift we received as a human race. I can’t think of any one person in my lifetime who has moved so many emotions with the one hand that he penned this music with. Godspeed Mr Withers.

The muscle car was still popular, and El Dorado was king of the vast American highways, as the gas crisis hadn't hit yet. The South had recently been desegregated and tensions were still high. The country was living big in the space age, with cheap cigarettes and expensive computers. D&D had just been invented from tabletop wargames, and arcades were starting to pop up.
And here's Bill, singing about how he'll give you a hand if he can. Our world always needs more people like him.

A friend at work was telling me how his Dad always made their family sing this after Sunday dinner. I am a base baritone and he is a tenor. We looked at one another and started singing. Little did we know the AC vent directly above us was amplifying our singing over the whole call center floor. It wasn't long before a supervisor came running it to tell us to shut up. When we went back to work everyone gave us a thumbs up. An unforgettable moment. Thanks Bill!

Reminds me of how delight life is. How it is growing upamd thining that you will always have the Friends you have. How you think that good things will stay and bad things will leave as fast as they came. As a 39 Year old father i now know that none of this will happen. I remember growing up as a half Asian in Germany and Racists told me i am worth nothing. How my Teacher and Class Mates told me that i will grow up being nothing. 2018 i made the Change. Leaving the Country traveling the World as a gratuated Chef. 2013 i came to Switzerland and i met my Wife. She teached me to be someone. Gratuated as a Supply Chain Specialist and being ably to support my old mom and my Family. So what is life all about? Beeing able to take opportunities ones you see them not beeing afraid of what might happen. But i paid a price for that. There is almost no one left that i can lean on. But thats fine...the few that are left are more than i bargained for. Wishing you all the best.

True musician--no auto tune or fancy gizmos--just great singing and lyrics that go to the heart. It was so great that he walked away, or at least, stepped back from the avaricious music "business" that wrings creativity and spontaneity out of the artist while lining their own pockets.
He played whenever and wherever he wanted to, raised his kids, and left us all with his amazing legacy. RIP

Such a simple, beautiful, and relevant message for 2020. Regardless of race, political views, gender, or religion we are all human beings and at times we all need each other to lean on, especially in times like these. RIP Bill Withers, thank you for sharing your love and music for us all to enjoy together!

God wants people to enjoy life on earth. He created the earth and everything on it because he loves mankind. Soon he will act to provide a better future for people in every land. He will relieve mankind of the causes of suffering. -Read Jeremiah 29:11.

Black ppl always had a spiritual music in the old school music thats why its was powerful. So much talent

    • @StephenGillie
      @StephenGillie 3 роки тому +7

Spiritual music was all that could get some of the people through a depressing life of servitude, with no concept of recognition, let alone growth nor advancement. It's soul-crushing for even the greatest humans, and a hellish fate too cruel for even the worst criminals. It's tempting to dehumanize the perpetrator in retaliation, but that would make us no better than those deplorables. We all need something to look forward to in life, and sadly, many of these people only had the cold embrace of Thanatos to look forward to, or "winning the freedom lottery" by running away and not getting caught.
Telling all this to my Boomer dad, who thinks the Founding Fathers were some of the best moral leaders by breaking from their king, and he ignores that they kept slaves. Sigh.

@@RobbieBlue You don't accept that you have a narrow mind. Yet you've literally proven that I'm right in calling it that.
The smoking gun here is shown when you jump to conclusions about me.
Saying I'm a white supremacist merely because I dont buy into your racist agenda.
Like really dude? Music is music. I think people of all backgrounds have shown this to us.
Don't you realize that you're the one constantly making these things about race? Yes YOU ARE THE ONE'S DIVIDING THINGS UP IN TERMS OF RACE. You're heading down a bad road as this is exactly what your masters wanted you to do.
The media has always posed as for the people but is always used against us instead.
It is easy to conquer a group of people if you've made them busy thinking they need to fight one another.
You poor clown, you really think you could tell me where my soul plays into things. You don't know what the hell you're even talking about anymore.

@@StephenGillie They kept slaves yes, but if you read about the rest of the world during their time you would realize that everyone else was as well.
In fact, the slaves they kept were sold to them by their own neighbors who defeated them in wars.
The founding fathers couldn't have had a chance in becoming a world power without slaves. Seeing as everyone else was using them to get a leg on the competitors it was sadly the only way they saw possible.
There were slaves here before the colonists as some of the native tribes practiced slavery of their neighbors as well.
Literally every known continent had slavery in that time.
I'm not saying it was right but I'm tired of people blaming white people for the entirety of slavery. Black Americans are acting like it only happened to them and that is ridiculous man.

My mum Margaret Peel(1964-2022),loved this song so much. She rewrote the lyrics in Kiswahili. I still remember at about 5 years of age watching the Morgan Freeman movie, "Lean On Me"- just me and her. When she died, a part of me was buried with her. She introduced me to good music. And yes, Billy Withers is an embodiment of what good music is.

    Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow.
    But if we are wise,
We know that there's always tomorrow.
Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
    For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.
    Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
    That you won't let show.
    Sing
You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.
Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on
    For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
    Sing
You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.
    If there is a load
    You have to bear
    That you can't carry
    I'm right up the road
    I'll share your load
    If you just call me.
    Sing
Call me if you need a friend
    Call me, call me, uh-huh
Call me when you need a friend
Call me if you ever need a friend
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
Call me if you need a friend
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
