    this weird texture happens if you damage/harm the paper in some way before putting colour on it. Arches is a great paper and it's hard to damage it and I would say waterbrush is not harsh enough to harm Arches. It might be the rubber, some kinds are not working well with cotton watercolour papers and may damage the seizing on the surface of them. This texture also happens if the paper is exposed to moisture, for example if the block/pad wasn't stored peoperly for some time. Maybe this info will help you:) As always, amazing video, Fran!

      I have the personal experience that it can be a really weird combo of the Aquash and some watercolors. It rubs the paper of. Without any earasing. (Although the paper has to be really wet for this. Which happens to me quiet often if I don't watch how hard I squezze this damn wonderful brushes. xD )

    Hola Fran!
    Nunca había comentando antes, pero soy muy fan! Besis para ti y Edu!

    When people stare at you while you're painting, stare back at them and draw their horrified expressions! I recommend using Pentel waterbrushes - never had a problem and I've used them for a long time. Sakura and Holbein also make excellent waterbrushes, but I don't use mine as often, I prefer the Pentel. The Sakura Koi watercolor field kit is an excellent watercolor set that comes with a waterbrush. I have two Koi sets and adore them when I go out into the world. Lovely video, today! Thank you! Cheers! :)

    YOUR COLOURS OMG AMAZING! I love how those shapes just came together with the pen lines. I think the texture on the paper is because of the quick scrubbing motion you use with the brush. Water brushes are a little bit firmer and pointier than regular brushes so when you do a quick motion it can pill the paper a bit.

    • @elizabethtaylor4448
      @elizabethtaylor4448 7 років тому

      totally agree with your comment. That scrubbing motion using the tip of a synthetic brush is what will pill wet paper. i think if Fran used the side of the brush a let the colour flow on to the paper more it would be better.

    Yes!It's very useful to use brush pen. Especially outside. I use one more then 1,5 years and it's still good. Most that I like is that you can create lines in different sizes. So it means that all you need for good drawing outside are only sketchbook/ paper/ note, paints and brush pen! Brush pen will replace other brushes.
    Final mark 8/10

    I TOTALLY understand what you mean about feeling uncomfortable being looked at when drawing in public. I have many a time gone out with all good intentions of doing some drawing in a museum or park, got my pencil case and sketchbook out, ready to go, and then chickened out from self-consciousness. I once went sketching in Covent Garden in London and people would constantly come up and stand looking over my shoulder. I have expressed this to other people who say that it's just something I have to 'get over'. But it's hard to shake off that feeling. Glad it's not just me who struggles with this feeling!

  • @jessiecoalterprice

    Hi Fran! I actually really like these types of brushes. I love that you don't have to deal with a cup of water, and they are really helpful on the go. I keep them in my pencil case in my backpack for easy access.
    I too am self conscious about drawing/painting in public. I feel like everyone is staring at me, and its very intimidating, but I'm getting better at it. Keep at is love!
    Have fun Fran! XOXO.

    Hola Fran! mi super consejito con los brush pen es que tengas varios, uno para el agua y los otros dos con colores.
    Y sobre todas las cosas no acabes sustituyendo los pinceles reales, siempre van a ser mejor.
    - Lo llenas entero de agua y echas unas gotitas del color que te guste, por ejemplo un par de gotas de tinta negra y y otro par de cyan y ya tienes un pincel con la mezcla hecha perfecta para dar las sombras a todo. No tengas miedo, prueba todo lo que puedas, créeme que lo aguanta.
    - Otra mezcla que me encanta y que no se si podrás hacer es tener uno lleno de agua, (siempre empieza con agua, nunca lo rellenes solo de pintura, excepto ecoline y acuarelas líquidas) y a este le añades colorante alimenticio, aquí en España hay unos polvos que se echan a la paella para darle ese color porque el azafrán es muy caro, Y MADRE MÍA! no hay amarillo más bonito que ese, te lo prometo.

    • @joana9616
      @joana9616 7 років тому +3

      Desiree de Miguel OMG!!! Nunca se me habría ocurrido usar el colorante para la paella como pigmento. Ahora tengo que probarlo!!

    • @Aryula
      @Aryula 7 років тому

      supongo que hablas de la Curcuma o "azafran de camote" como se le conoce en méxico, es super pigmentante, un amigo creía que la mostaza tenia colorante y era lo que le daba ese color amarillo fosfo, pero no, lo que tiene es curcuma, supongo que funciona como pigmento natural, pero yo tendría cuidado de llenar un warterbrush con algo que no fuera agua por miedo a que se tapara, pero ya cuestión de cada quien

    • @desireedemiguel2032
      @desireedemiguel2032 7 років тому +1

      no es curcuma, no tiene sabor, y creo que si no trasteas con los waterbrush te estás perdiendo más de la mitad de su potencial, a demás es un material "barato" está pensado para que no te duren toda la vida, no son para nada delicados y es mejor sacarles todo su potencial

    • @Aryula
      @Aryula 7 років тому

      ya que estamos en eso de echarle cosas a los pinceles, le haz hechado alcohol? pensé que jalaria chido para mezclar col prismacolor xD pero igual y no retienen mucho el alcohol y se les evapora, no se xD

    I used to hate water brushes but now I am kind of addicted to them mostly because I spend a lot of time drawing in buses and subways. It's really funny how people stare at you when you're drawing outside. Love your videos!
    Also the color of your hair is incredibly beautiful in this video.

  • @parthesky
    @parthesky 7 років тому

    I love painting/drawing in public, taking inspiration from real objects/scenes, and the thrill of getting caught adds to the excitement! I also have many sneaky techniques in order for people not to stare: 1) sit at a strategic spot. 2) wear sunglasses or tinted lenses. Bangs over your face also helps 3) hide everything in a large folder/notebook/binder on your lap or on your desk. A laptop also helps hide stuff. 4) Keep your set up small. Limit everything! Use a chamois cloth instead of paper towels. They're reusable and absorbs a lot of water! 5) Act normal. If you get caught looking, instantly avert gaze towards the object behind them or next to them very slowly, but don't look away. They'll just mistakenly feel like you're looking at them, but then they'd be wrong. lol

    I know exactly how you feel about painting in public... Took me a while also to get comfortable with the Pentel Aquash but after persevering for some time - even at home just swatching colours and experimenting with mixes, I soon got quite proficient controlling the water flow and getting the most out of the brush. I have found a preference for the Larger Round which I feel is most flexible in what I can do with it, from detail to laying a wash and rarely use the smaller ones now. The greatest progress I made in using this brush came in finding a comfortable hold / grip, that gave me control of the brush and the water flow. To start with I was uncomfortable with the odd shape barrel as I like to hold my brushes further back. However supporting the regulator section loosely between an outstretched index and forefinger, places the thumb nicely on the broad flat of the barrel. Light pressure with the thumb regulates flow nicely while giving me a relaxed control of the brush. Previously I had held the brush Pencil-like "tripod grip" on either the front regulator part or the barrel - neither offered comfort or control. I have since tried several makes of waterbrush including the Caran D'ache but find the large Pentel the one I always come back to - it't the easiest to control.

    Hello, Fran! I have one water-color brush. When I bought it the costumer gave me some advices about using it. The first one is about material the hair made of. Mine looks like from some kind of plastic, even syntetic brushes are much softer. So these can easily harm the paper. But it is realy cool for quick scatches outside.
    The second advice was about putting some ink with water in the capsule. When your "mix" ends in capsule, you should wash it realy attentively. If not - it could be hard to open or close the brush with time.
    Have a nice day! You and Ed are cool!

    I really love using the water brushes and plan on taking them with me as I travel this summer. I would suggest trying them in other papers. I have not had any problem with paper pulling up. Also, it helps not to have too much water in the brush tip or on the paper. I don't mean use it dry but not soggy!😀. Hope that made sense!

    One reason for the textrue could be you had some excess paper crumbles in the bristles of your waterbrush, that happend to me a lot of times. :)
    The weird texture on your paper looked like destroyed surface of the paper. This happens when you for example erase on it or rub over it (for whatever reason). This happens especially on hot pressed cotton paper since the texture is so smooth and most often easier to destroy/damage. Another reason could be using too much water, but that is very unlikely to destroy a paper like Arches, but with cheaper watercolor paper that could happen too. If your paper was only slightly wet or if you are in a really humid area that could damage it as well. Thats everything I could think of. Maybe try not to erase on the paper / using a lighttabel or at least keep the erasing to a minimum/ use a kneaded eraser and only gently tap on the paper instead of rubbing over it. Also keep your paper dry when you store it. Hope that helps.
    I used waterbrushes for travelling or painting on the go some years ago, but I got back to regular travel brushes, the reversible ones. I just dont like the bristles of the waterbrushes, I prefer normal ones since they hold a lot more water and are better to handle for me since I am in full control of the amount of water and pigment I use.

    With the texture oddity you experienced, I find this sometimes too and I'm not a crazy fan of water brushes. I find too much water comes out or it's hard to control the release of water, and manual brushes give you much more control. But they're not easy to transport. :) Painting outside also freaks me out too - hehe. I've done it a couple times but I find it's easier to concentrate and focus at my art desk. Thanks for the fun video! :)

    This video is lovely Fran! i totally agree, if your in a funk its time to get out the house and mix it up. In terms of your paper/brush problem - you need to use water colour paper with those brushes because they are really wet and they need a heavier paper because if you keep revisiting the same spot it'll just bubble the paper, sometimes even put a hole through it D:. If you get a super heavy paper you can paint straight onto it in a sketchbook fashion on the go, whereas a lower weight paper you may need to stretch it with gum tape onto a board. Hope that helps and thank you for making this video :3

I'm totally going out my comfort zone: moving to Toronto Canada for the Fall for to do exchange studies in 3d animation and I'm so nervous and so excited. Love the suprise visit from Ed :D

    I totally get you when you say that you feel uncomfortable painting outside. I usually go sketching at bars or cafes together with other sketchers from Berlin, because that's less intimidating. People still look at you, but not at you only :'D In the future I also want to go sketching outside by myself to be more productive... otherwise I talk so much with the other guys. But maybe you can find some people who go out sketching with you and just try that out?
    What also helps me with these water tank brushes is to pre-wet my paints. I have a little spray bottle with water that I can lock to prevend it from leaking (it's called 'distress spray stain' by Tim Holtz). I just spray some water on my palette and it makes the painting process feel much more natural when I work with these brushes.
    I really like how your ilustrations turned out! Your video really makes me want to do more cartoony stuff with my watercolors and to try different styles when I draw from life!

    the tiny specs are the paper being harmed in some way
    it could be the quality of it, the brush being harsh on it, you rubbing it too much or too harsh. could be more stuff but thats what i thought of
    and i finally bought one of my own so in super hype to try it^^

      Thanks Linneaaaa! YEAH, Celes (a fellow viewer who commented down bellow) said that it could also be excess water! So I'm going to try using less water next time! Water brushes are tricky to use because once you stop pressing them, water keeps pouring out a little longer, so I still don't know how long and how much should I press. I need to keep practicing, thank you so much for your input!

    I love these brushes, specially if I have to paint outside (like I'm sketching and I just want to add a bit of color) BUT I got too used to them (because of the confort or the price or everything, idk). So for a loooong time these were which I used every time I needed to paint with watercolors and I started to notice that there were some issues (the paper thing is real). And then, one day, I rescued one good brush (not very good but good enough) and the change was AMAZING.
    So my personal recommendation is that the quality-price relationship is great and they are incredible for casual works, but they are not a replacement of good watercolor brushes.
    Having said that, I love your videos. I was a bit shy about commenting in this public way (it is the first time) but I get really excited talking about materials. I sent you an instagram pm a few months ago because I couldn't find an e-mail address, but I get it's not a very easy way to communicate ( I hate instagram pm system).
    So anyway, keep on the amazing job :)

    Thank you for this!! I've been in a really bad place over the last week with anxiety and ADHD issues. I have been trying my best to sketch everyday with my gorgeous copics and col-erase pencils and sometimes it worked and relaxed me, other times it didn't. I'm glad you gave this advice because it made me feel a little more human and less guilty xD
    As for waterbrushes... ugh. I totally feel your discomfort with them!! I'm not sure I could go out and use them as my only brush. The biggest thing I struggle with them is switching colours. I know you're supposed to squeeze them a little so the water drips through the brush and washes away the colour, but when I was doing that I felt like the water was being used too quickly and it wasn't long before the water barrel was empty.
    Maybe I should practice more with them before going out into the wild.
    I recognised Alexandra park :D I loved that place!! Enjoy all the fantastic weather we're getting!! It feels so good for our artist's souls.

    I do on occasion go to the park or cafe to draw. During the week those places are pretty empty in my area and it's actually kinda relaxing. I have a few of those brushes. Like you I haven't gotten to comfortable with them yet but this is making think I should try to use them again.

    I really enjoy your videos! I've been using this water brushes because they are really cheap and quite easy to carry around. About the texture, as far as I can see, you have the pentel brushes. They are really good ones and have really soft bristles. I guess the texture is formed because these brushes have a constant and unpredictable water flow. Sometimes the amount of water dispensed by the brush is too hard to control and you end up saturating the paper with water. So, if the paper already has got damaged some way, it will pop out. Depending on the brand (really low price ones) (actually, depending on the system of the brush), you cant control the water at all.

    Hej Fran! I have tried the water brushes before. Here ist my tip: try to fill in some of the Ecoline colours, or mix and match them with water. Then you will have your own "pentel like" colour brush. For drawing outside i like them, but i prefer to use real watercolour brushes for my drawings.

  • @LittleRavenInk
    @LittleRavenInk 7 років тому

    I find the pentel water brushes to be super watery! too much water flow for my liking, so I switched to the Kuretake ones and they are a lot less wet, which helped me a lot of control of my colour and a lot less colour bleeding accidents! Your pink hair is just stunning Fran!

    • @liz3050
      @liz3050 7 років тому

      LittleRavenInk i agree, but i love the pentel brush tips more than the kuretake ones. the pentel ones are a lot more pointy, you can get fine lines and thick lines. But that's hard to do with the water gushing out lol

    i use these brushes as a substitute for the pentel brushpen by filling it with ink (and a tiny bit of water because otherwise the brush will clog up)

    Hi Fran I noticed that you are using professional winsor&newton watercolours and I don't know if you know it, but they contain ox gall so they aren't vegan friendly!
