- The Character Sheet is back with more Fantasy and TTRPG News as we look at the Actual Play series that has crossed a massive milestone only Critical Role has reached before by surpassing 1 million UA-cam Subscribers...and it's NOT Dimension 20! We're talking about Legends Of Avantris...the biggest Actual play you may not have heard of. So how did it surpass Dimension 20 and Brennan Lee Mulligan to join Critical Role in the 1 Million+ UA-cam Sub club? And just what is Legends of Avantris doing to build all this momnetum on the plaftorm?
We're looking at how Legend of Avantris climbed above the competition to start nipping on the heels of Critical Role, and what they are doing that could help also burgeoning Actual Play's make it big on the platform!

Since last month their shorts have been all over my UA-cam feed, and nearly each one made me laugh hard. Then I found out they had a $4M Kickstarter and hired Dan Dillon? My attention has been sufficiently grabbed.

Legends of Avantris is amazing! I came across them several months before their Kickstarter and never complained.
And you are right; this is a D&D "actual" play group! No famous members; just a group of regular, normal people creating incredibly hilarious stories together.
BTW, the special with Matthew Lillard was chef's kiss hilarious!
Yeah, it grew very organically without star power to draw on, which is incredibly unique for an actual play that has risen to this level of popularity!
I mean like of course it’s not Dimension 20. D20s main platform is dropout and not YT. If D20 was fully on YT, they’d get over a million easily.
It's great to see more content from more creators, but yeah, it's kinda silly to claim that these people have passed D20, using one metric that doesn't apply to D20 at all lol. It's not a race, but if it were, D20 would still be winning...

ya using D20 as a clickbait comparison is not great journalism. They don’t even upload their campaigns till a year passes, and even then, not all of their campaigns are on youtube. They obviously are also making bank so…

Legends of Avantris has been my favorite DnD channel on UA-cam! I got interested in it through the Chuckles clips but these guys have kept me hooked from the start with making me laugh my head off almost every episode and cry my eyes out when they get sentimental. Truly awesome storytelling combined with a truly amazing group of friends.

As someone who’s been an active watcher of legends of avantris for over a year now. THERES SO MUCH MORE THEN CHUCKLES the lore is immensely good and they have always had me on the edge of my seat if your not only looking to laugh but have horror Edge of midnight is for you
If you want deep dark survival horror mixed in with funny despair icebound is a great starting place for you
If you love curse of strahd and you live crying ever more curse of strahdanya is for you
Shroud over salt marsh is there gritty sea faring campaign which is the most tense by far
But if you love chuckles chuckles Witchlight and stardust is for you
Their shorts are hilarious. They got me to sub to the channel. I’ve been slowly working through the back log of the show. Glad they are getting recognition.

This show has some awesome laughs, but eventually just becomes everyone screaming and laughing as loud as humanly possible. Kinda annoying. Funny though.

Congratulations to Legends of Avantris. I've watched some of their let's plays, and they are very entertaining. Especially Mikey's characters.
As much as i like Dimension 20, there is one major flaw that is going to keep it from being as successful as some of the others; they don't put all of their games up on UA-cam. Yes, they have some full playthroughs, such as the first year of Fantasy High, or The Unsleeping City, but most of the time, that is not the case. They will have the first session on UA-cam, and some compilations of certain scenes, but most of the game is only available for viewing on Dropout.
I'm so excited for Crooked Moon!
Their roleplay and comedy is amazing, been getting into them for the last 4 months and have not been disappointed.
People going in should expect comedic and fun dnd rather than the narrative drama that Critical Role offers
I'd be interested if they were playing old school, but 5e is a straight no thanks.

Cool. More styles probably means more total viewers across actual plays at this point (i.e. more growing the pie vs competing for more shares of the pie).

I've been getting a lot of this channel in shorts over this last week. All relating to Chuckles. I do wonder a little about algorithm shenanigans given the explosion I've seen in the last week, but the content looks solid!

i believe that in one of their Kickstarter streams (I think it was Rich) they said they were hoping to create a publishing company and that crooked Moon was trial of this pursuit. ( I think it was their final day stream of the Kickstarter).

Legends of Avantris does really capture the ridiculousness of playing DnD with friends.
There’s something pure about seeing people who are most likely not trained actors or comedians making “Deez Nuts” jokes and
accidentally saying “Shitter” in a tense encounter with a Vampire Lady.
I won my 1st box of Miniatures from their live stream giveaway Avantris is awesome.
All for promoting more actual plays, however.
It's more than a little disingenuous to say its catching up to Critical Role, or has surpassed Dimention 20.
A quick look at their channel shows a lot of views for early episodes of the campaigns, possibly due to tik tok as other comments have malentioned. But those views drop off significantly and even at their height don't reach those levels. This is just click bait.
I do find their long form stuff sometimes a little difficult to watch. Big fan, support in Patreon, etc, but the games can be kind of slow moving and schlapsticky.
Views would be way higher if they edited and trimmed episodes or did more short form recap for their longer running stuff. But they're also a small crew, so, yknow.
Wild Beyond the Witchlight is some of the funniest dnd I've seen since original Acq Inc back in like '04. The team really fires on all cylinders with that one.
Seeing people mention chuckles I think I have seen a few videos of theirs, which where funny, but I didn't pay too much attention to it, it was animated.

I find the woman in their troupe very annoying. Otherwise it would be good. It might be the lack of girls in the troupe that makes her go over the top on her antics.

I've seen their content largely through shorts, and they're always hilarious. Chuckles the Undead/Space Clown was a highlight, but they all have such amazing comic timing and instincts. If I had time for another long play, or if CR ended, they'd be where I would go for my rpg fix.

Dimension 20 YT videos (their secondary platform compared to Dropout) have something like 800k-1.2M views, but sure, compare them to a channel with an average of 20k-50k. LOL
Congrats to this group! Most people at that table are horrifically ugly, but they play some fun dnd. To make it like they have on a video platform is wonderful.
What I personally love most about Legends of Avantris is how their games really feel like a true dnd experience. They aren't professional actors or performers (correct me if I'm wrong).They're just that charismatic and damn freaking funny. They play off of each other so well and the story just builds with them. I'm super happy for their growth 🥹❤️
