ISO Auto Min. SS - Sony's Best Custom Setting

  • See why I think the ISO AUTO Minimum Shutter Speed or 'ISO Auto Min. SS' is Sony Alpha's most useful custom setting. I discuss why shooting in Aperture priority with a modified ISO AUTO Min. SS setting offers several advantages to shooting in Shutter priority mode. I also demo how to assign the setting to a custom button for fast access.

    Thank you for explaining this so clearly and comprehensively. When working with low light and wild birds I have found myself wanting to set the minimum shutter speed to 1/1600s or 1/1250s on my A6300 but the feature seems to be limited to full stops forcing me to choose between 1/2000s or 1/1000s. Min shutter speed is such a good feature that I would programme the dial to change the setting without first having to press a function button. This would be great in a situation where I have a perched bird that is fairly still and I can use a slower shutter speed; however, I might wish to change to a fast shutter speed instantly if the bird takes to flight. I have started using the camera in manual with auto ISO instead, which allows me to change the shutter speed directly with the dial. I walk around with the A6300 and 70-350mm zoom, a lovely light weight camera but small apertures on APSC tend to force the ISO up more than I’d like.

    Unless I’m using lights when I’m totally manual, I am an aperture priority shooter and use auto iso all the time. This UA-cam video matches my experience exactly and good to have my experience over several years confirmed. My C2 button on my A9 and A7Rii are set to Auto ISO Min Shutter speed. I use C1 for focus area consistently on all my cameras. Thanks for the videos (sorry “movies”) Mark.

    Great video Mark, thank you, you have a wonderful gift for teaching! Minumum shutter speed is an awesome function and I used to use it very much back in the days I had a Nikon D3100 DSLR. I purchased a Sony ZV-E10 last year and was very disappointed to find that the setting that I had on my 2010 camera is not available on the small Sony mirrorless (it did not even occur to me that it could be missing in any modern camera). I know the ZV line is targeted mostly towards video creators but I believe this setting should be available on all cameras and still hope Sony might implement this with some software update later on...🤞

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  Рік тому +1

      It's unfortunate that Sony feel the need to reduce the complexity of their menus by deleting features they don't think basic users will use. The missing ISO AUTO Min. SS on the ZV-E10 is probably due to the fact that the A6100 entry-level camera (that the ZV-E10 was based on) did not have this feature. I would like Sony to see just how important this feature is and put it in the their Fn menu on all cameras.

    • @ac4pres310
      @ac4pres310 Рік тому +1

      @@AlphaCreativeSkills Wow, I did not know that the a6100 did not have it either 🫢 The menus are already big (but this is also ok to give us lots of options) and frankly one more line would not have made any difference for me in that matter. Going back to my D3100, it was also an entry-level camera and it had it 13 years ago meaning it cannot be so difficult to implement technically (especially seeing the higher a6400 I believe already has it).
      I hope they do eventually see the need to implement it as a standard feature. If you make a petition I'll sign! 😄

    I didn't know the A7 III could go down to f:11 until I saw this (I just bought one). I thought I was going to be limited to f:8 so thanks for that. My favourite trick with motorsport photography is to go as low a shutter speed as I can while maintaining accurate panning and focus. I have shot bikes at Phillip Island at the bottom of the main straight at 1/30th second. Always a pretty low keeper rate with that strategy but frankly, lower with some cameras than with others and when you get it right, the results can be spectacular.

    I love my Alpha 7 camera. this a helpful video. Sony has done its best to make the automation helpful, but its a lot to remember, if you are shooting in less than usual conditions. bike shots were, I presumed all panning shots
    I did wonder if/how this 'help' is implemented in the A99 A-mount camera, which is reputed to have clairvoyant AF
    the ageing menu system, needs revamping, imo. flip forward screen, added lcd utility would be helpful, maybe the V (5th) series will get those. - so Sony keeps it tech. lead.

    As you explain so well, ISO Auto Min. SS is a very useful feature. However, although Sony acknowledge the use of non-native manual lenses by providing a Focal Length setting for SteadyShot, it's a shame that that information doesn't appear to be passed into the minimum shutter speed computation, because it seems to have no effect at all on shutter speed when in Aperture Priority mode.

    This customization was passed on during your a9 (and a7R3/a73) action setup videos. At first I didn't use "AUTO ISO Min SS". By chance, thanks to those videos and having that saved in Mem 3, I had it and used it once. That one single customization has done the most to improve my quick shooting image quality. If you haven't already, I would update those 2 older videos description and provide links to the video. I find that I get the action or run and gun, shots I want almost everytime now with this customization. I have my a9 and a7R3 both setup to use this customization for this type of shooting. I have C2 button assigned and adjust this often. The other thing I find myself using a lot is I have the metering mode where I can change it fast. I take a lot of shots with changing light situations and back and forth between multi, spot, and highlight. You get to know which metering mode will best capture the scene the way you want. But between those 2 (auto iso min ss and metering mode) with your action settings, my results have improved tremendously. I wanted to personally thank you again for all your work on these videos. If we are ever in the same city together, I owe you dinner my friend. Have a great day!

You are doing a great job with your videos. Thank you.

      I am not sure what you mean by off-track. They didn’t enter the ILC market until 2006 and their development strategy has been consistent and progressive - although not always apparent to reviewers.

    Hi Mark. I found another 12 photos, shot in a consecutive series with the image mentioned in the comment below (not a burst), that were also shot in Manual Shoot Mode with Auto ISO, that had an ISO 50 when I verified the exposure information in LR. The images were shot with my Sony a7r3. I wish you and your family a happy holiday season. Thanks.

      I can’t replicate that on my camera because the Auto ISO minimum setting is restricted to 100 on my camera. I am curious as to how your camera manages to achieve this.

    • @zoe20641
      @zoe20641 5 років тому

      @@AlphaCreativeSkills I think I finally figured out why I found ISO 50 with what I thought was Auto Iso. I put ISO on the control wheel on the back of the camera so that I can change ISO easier by simply rotating the wheel. I changed the ISO to auto when I took the camera off the tripod to use it handheld and I must have knocked the control wheel without realising it and the ISO switched out of Auto to 50. Many lessons learned. Please excuse my inexperience. Thanks.

    This is incredible, I had no idea you could access this setting via a custom button! This makes Sony's min. SS implementation the best I've seen, and honestly I'd consider switching from Fuji for that feature alone. However, in your kookaburra and dog examples, I personally would have preferred to max out the max ISO and let the camera honour my min. shutter speed, because as you said you set those speeds for a reason (to freeze the motion). Anyway great video, and greetings from Brissy :)

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  4 роки тому

      If you respect the shutter speed you will underexpose the image. I would rather have more panning blur than underexposure.

    • @MrJed_s
      @MrJed_s 4 роки тому

      @@AlphaCreativeSkills but if you don't respect the shutter speed you could end up with subject motion blur, camera shake, or both. Let's use the dog example specifically. At the start you mentioned that you wanted 1/4000 to freeze the action, but later you show that this is lowered to 1/2000 due to your auto ISO limit to achieve the correct exposure. But according to your logic, 1/2000 isn't sufficient to freeze the action, so motion blur may occur (if 1/2000 were acceptable, wouldn't you just set that at the start?). And I'm not sure the panning example applies here, since you were actually trying to lower your SS at base ISO.

    Hi Mark. Further to my comment below, I was working on one of my photos in Lightroom that was shot in Manual shoot mode with Auto ISO, and the camera chose ISO 50. Thanks

      Just remember that when the ambient light gets low the shutter speed will go below what you have set in ISO Auto Min SS - this is to prioritise correct exposure over shutter speed.

    Another very informative video, but please comment on why you prefer this over manual mode with auto ISO which gives one total control over both aperture and shutter speed. Thanks

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  5 років тому +2

      I think I highlighted this when I discussed the fact that in ISO AUTO Min SS exposure is protected, i.e. the Selected Min. SS is a target and NOT a fixed setting as it is in Manual and Shutter Priority Mode. I also raised the point that if aperture is a variable in Shutter Priority I may lose focus tracking or deny me the depth of field I require to ensure my subject is sharp.

    I just joined your website and I'm very impressed with everything what a great site and I'm learning so much already. You have more information I think I've seen from anybody out there so I joined your site and very happy with it and can't wait to read more. THANKS
    Just one quick question if I may on the ISO Auto Min SS.
    I did watch the video on it but just a question relating to what I would be using it for and if it would help me?
    I just used the SONY A6700 at an air show for the first time with my SONY 200-600 G lens. My setting were, Shutter Priority at 1/2000, AP was around F/8 to F/11, Auto ISO, 10fps and can't remember the metering?
    I have some good clear shots and was wondering if the ISO Auto Min SS would help with airshow air shots or not for this application?? Was shooting fast jets as well as prop planes but then dropped the Shutter to around 1/125 to keep prop blur.
    Thanks a ton.

      Hi Bob
      Can you ask photographic questions on Mark’s Patreon support channel as he doesn’t get a lot of time these days to answer questions on UA-cam. You may also want to list the specs of the camera again as there is no A600 camera in the Alpha lineup - Thanks
