@@brewingbooks Well, I hesitated a long time to buy 'The Great Tales Never End' (also Bodleian), but eventually I did and I was impressed with the quality of the printing as well as the content. Did you get that too?
I just checked out her channel and subbed before even finishing watching this! I didn't want to get distracted & forget. When I used to take art classes in high school I could never get the hang of using water colors. They always turned out looking like it was made by a 3 year old. I admire anyone who can work with them and make it look so lovely. Now, to finish this video.
I second James: this book is a MUST in your collection! I bought it when I saw a 10-minute review (with literally page by page demonstration) on the BookCravings channel more than one year ago. I recommend everyone watch it too (in case if James' one wasn't convincing enough). Worth every penny/cent/whtever you'd pay for it. P.S. That's a heavy volume!
I also bought my copy of this book in Oxford back in 2018 when visiting the exhibition. It gives an extra taste to it, but anyway, as you say, it is an absolute must have for every Tolkien fan.
Trust me, it will never be finished... How many times have I told my girlfriend after a Tolkien book arrived: 'don't worry, now I have everything.' Then a month later: 'hey, this edition of The Lord of the Rings looks neat too.'
I only recently realized the little symbol on Tolkien's books is his initials, JRRT. All these years seeing it over and over and it never clicked in my brain! You'd think I would've realized it instantly, since I used to do calligraphy years ago. I also didn't realize until I began watching Tolkien videos that some of the drawings I've seen were done by him! I didn't realize he was a visual artist as well as a writer. This book is gorgeous. I thought maybe it was just photographs/drawings with minimal text. But there seems to be quite a bit to read as well. And wow, the price is very reasonable for such a treasure.
They also sold a Deluxe version of this edition, which recently sold-out. You can see it on a video on the TolkienGuide channel, ua-cam.com/video/_Ci0SSrAXOI/v-deo.html
Wow! Nice artwork. At first I thought you made it yourself 😅. The book looks very interesting. I've seen it as recommended, but never triggered me. I might have to look into it. 👍
It's a great book! Thanks for getting the word out on it for those that have not gotten a copy yet. Have you purchased the book “J.R.R. Tolkien: The Art of the Manuscript” Catalog from the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University? It may be have a lot of the same material as "Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth". I'm not sure, but it may enough differences to warrant purchasing. Cheers!
I’ve read about it and it looks like another beautiful book though yes, I suspect it has similar content. Unfortunately shipping costs are extraordinarily high 🙁
Jim, can you make a video reviewing the build quality of the HarperCollins Tolkien books? I plan to start buyin them and building my dream collection but I keep hearing that modern hardcover books are very fragile and build quality is low. One friend told me they are only for 'display' and if you want to read the book, you should get "backup" paperbacks. Is it true the Tolkien books are easy to break?
There will always be an overlap and repetition in terms of some images across various books. Maker of Middle earth focuses mostly on scans of drafts, letters, sketches etc, while the Art books are, as expected, more specific on either LOTR or The Hobbit. Id say each of the three books have their unique content, but if you’re undecided between them, go for Maker of Middle earth.
panic over, lol thought you were going to say Rings Of Power cover books haha.
Lmao I thought the same 🤣🤣
Haha! Those covers look great but I don’t find them relevant covers for LOTR so I won’t be getting them 🙃
Bought it before the video was halfway. That's how much I trust your taste in books!
Oh wow thanks! But you’ve made an excellent choice. It’s a remarkable book.

Those paintings are amazing!
They really are. And the reproductions in this book are fantastic 👍
Thanks for the recommendation! I will definitely ask my best friend to get this as my Christmas gift.
Hehe good decision 😉
The moment I start the vid, I added it to my wish list. Thank you for the recommendation.
You’re welcome!

Omg then I’m definitely buying this book in the future. My dream Tolkien collection is nearly finished!
Trust me, it will never be finished...

True words!
Glad you’re adding this to your collection 🙂

If you have a copy of the Hobbit with Tolkien's iconic dust-jacket that he illustrated, have a look for his monogram in the illustration.
It’s quite fantastic, isn’t it?
That book is beautiful! As is your girlfriend’s art work - amazing!
Thank you so much 🙂
Thanks for the info. Had it in the wishlist for a while. Now I’m pulling the trigger. 😂
Fantastic! It’s a great item 🙂

Will think of something for a future video, thanks! 😃
Did you buy the complete guide to middle earth? Im waiting for the review.
I have the previous hardback edition but I’m not sure I’m ready to get the new edition just yet 🙃
I've it. Thanks. Great review.
Cheers 🙂
i have it
Awesome!
your girlfriends paintings are beautiful. your very lucky.
If I buy this, do I need the art of the hobbit or the art of the lord of the rings as well?
