I got myself some microfiber gloves for leaf cleaning and it works great! I usually had issues with accidentally breaking or damaging leafs, but now I just put a hand on each side of the leaf and gently slide them down. The gloves are also great, because I can very easily regulate how wet they are, because they are directly on my hands.
A bonsai concept is to expose more of the trunk to get that lovely tree like look in a small container. I love that idea and will start trying it, especially on my bushy large leaf rubber plants! Thanks for the tip.
Bonsai concepts are long term strategies. It can take many many years to get a plant to the desired miniature tree look. In the process during those years, your bonsai plant may look strange or unappealing as you let different growth techniques take hold. Exposing the trunk may not be desired, at all, because a woody trunk tends to thicken where it branches. If you trim the bottom, then when it starts branching higher you can end up with a trunk that gets thicker higher than it is at the bottom, and of course, that is undesirable.

Great tips! My favorite propagation method is rooting in water. I had some plants that weren't doing well and I switched them to water from soil and they took off. I leave my cuttings in water most of the time and they grow like crazy. Lots of syngoniums, pothos, philodendrons, and others. Really enjoy your channel!
I love keeping plants in water! I got some little globes from Amazon that hang on the wall, so that I can have even more plants in water. As long as there's water in the vessel, you don't have to worry about over or under watering.
another tip about cuttings, if you put some young willow growth in the jar and keep it there for a day or two, then put other plant cuttings into it, they will make a great rooting booster for the cuttings
Also, lentils water contains auxines which boost growth. Just soak some lentils for a few days until they start to germinate. Use that water for propagation and enjoy a sprout salad!😊

Indoor plants dry slower when it's rainy or cloudy outside. If the soil refuses dry even though you have draining holes in the pots and you have used up all you paper towels trying to absorb the excess, you can use a plant supporting stick and gently push it through the holes in the bottom of the pot and all the way through the soil to make it loosen and dry faster. This has saved me from replanting or switching the soil several times this summer. Im not sure of the exact translation for the stick but it's "blommpinne" (lit. "flower stick") in Swedish. Any stick that's small enough to fit and not push out the plant of the pot will do though :)
I've done a bit of experimenting with propagation lately and my favorite prop method has changed....ive tried water, perlite, and lately vermiculite. Water always seems to be fastest but if you are putting in soil, there's a bit of a shock. Vermiculite seems to have solved a lot of problems because it stays fluffy with air but much moister than perlite. It's been an interesting experiment.

Another tip to dry out soggy plants which worked for me. Let gravity drain as much of the excess water as possible. Make a multi-layer wad of absorbent cloth (preferred because it's reusable) or paper towels a little larger in diameter than the pot. Set the drained plant on the wad and a lot more water will wick out of the soil. If the wad saturates (gets runny), replace it with a dry one until your soil is the dampness you need it to be. And, very important, GET A MOISTURE METER!!
On some of my plants I have a beach towel underneath the draining ones that I don’t have saucers for. It seems to do the trick because the towel is constantly damp and I have to wash it weekly to keep the smell away. (A little ghetto tho but it seems to work!)

I've never heard some of these tips, such as not showering naked with your plants. But the one I'm anxious to try is putting a pothos cutting in with other plant cuttings in water to speed up roots forming. Congratulations on creating a website I will definitely be checking it out.

My tip is to use a cup of room temperature coffee instead of dishsop to fix hydrophobic soil. It works really well and feels safer, at least when I have to drown the soil because my grandmother is an expert at making it hydrophobic all the way down to the roots at her place 😂 I either mix it with water and pour it directly on the soil or mix it with water in a larger bowl and dip the soil in it. I think this methods could work with normal bottom watering too but that has to be tested more first. Coffee also acts like fertilizer so make sure the plants don't get any additional nutrition if they don't need it 😁 Edit: this method is much faster so don't leave the soil longer than some minutes in the water if you sink it in the Coffee water mix. At least not unattended :)

I am currently propagating 3 separat Hoya parts in soil and 3 in the foil. They are all the same size and from the same plant. The original thought was to see if the transition to soil would be easier on the roots in this way rather than propagation in water but then I decided to compare with the ones put directly in the soil instead. I can see smal roots forming on one of the hoyas on the plate with paper and foil but it's way to soon to tell if it will work. I will update my results if anyone is interested, and If anyone else wants to try, pleas do so we can compare :)
Dish soap can actually be used as an insecticide, and water with dish soap can be flushed through the soil occasionally to help kill some pests. I don't know about root mealy bugs, but spider mites and soil mites for sure.
@@stiaininbeglan3844 yes but the problem is that dish soap kills microbes and other living things in the soil that is needed for the soil to be healthy. Dish soap also kills water living organisms (it's actually stated on the lable) so I'd say it's a last resort. It also kills the plant directly if one is not carefull. I only use it if (like you said) I have something like spidermites that would have killed the plant anyway and never in the soil since I've already killed some plants that way 😅

I recently started to remove the nursery pots out of the ceramic pots to allow better air circulation. I failed to get rid of the standing water resulting in bad order/root rot. Moving forward, after watering my plants, Im removing the dish an hour later. This way the roots can dry up better.. I have over 50 plants, so this helps.

Regarding making plants look like trees: I grew 3 ficus Benjamina cuttings and plaited them together until they were about 15” tall before letting them branch out. I have to rub off little side shoots from the ‘trunks’ from time to time but it looks quite cool

I planted Oxalis Bulbs that have surfaced now and look great. I have one plant on my terrace (New Jersey) and one plant inside, to see which will grow better. This plant, more than any other I have seen, turns toward the light very dramatically, so I feel I am always looking at the back of the plant! Does it weaken the plant if I turn it every day so I can enjoy it? Or, should I only turn it perhaps once a week? It is so pretty - I have just bought more bulbs in another color . . . thank you for any help. I so enjoy your videos - and have checked your website as well. This was such a great video! I totally agree, I've had every plant you mentioned and UGH. Especially that pickle plant! Omg it taunts you in the store with its uniqueness and you bring it home only to have pickles all over the floor if you breath the wrong way and those bare branches... that one in particular such a let down. Some plants just need to be admired at the store and stay there. I really hate dieffenbachias too, and whenever someone gives you a plant gift basket of mixed plants, there is always one in there. Those and the kalanchoes. They are frustrating too...
I put a single leaf of my ficus altissima into the vase that houses my golden pothos cutting. To my surprise, the leaf grew roots after a week even without any nodes. Now I wonder if it ever grows shoots.
I know you've had fungus gnat issues, have you thought that the compost mix you have is too enticing for them? I recently swapped to a much chunkier mix and gnats are gonne!
They can come back if roots rot. But then, their presence signals a problem that should be addressed. Never thought fungus gnats would become handy one day.
I’m very confused about watering. You say to water from the bottom, meaning watering in the dish it sits in or the planter the plastic planter the plant is potted in. I always thought this creates root rot. You mention in this video that plants sitting in water will cause root rot. What’s the best way to water my plants?
Speaking of pesky fungus gnats, I have a Nepenthes x Ventrata and it has actually kept the gnat problem at bay. I’m not waking up to fungus gnats buzzing around my head. I haven’t for many months now
Is this an electronic probe or a meter that changes colour? The latter works with a wick made of a material that changes colour when wet. Inspired by this, back in the days when I had my plants in soil, I used a wick from the center of the rootzone, hanging out of the pot through the drainage hole. By feeling how humid the wick still was, I was able to say, if the plant needed a drink.
Have you ever tried putting ZZ plants in water? I want to eventually move over all my plants to water, mostly agloenemas and peperomias, but I also have 4 ZZ plants that I'm worried about putting in water.
My kittens broke some stems off of my zz about 2 weeks ago and just to see what would happen i dropped them into bottles with pothos and other prop plants in my bath. So far so good i noticed roots earier! I was very happy of that!

Did you know, when you place an o-ring around the drainage hole of a terracotta pot and place a smaller, planted terracotta pot in there, the space between the pots can be used for a water reservoir.
I take my overwatered house plants outside and place them in the sun. If rain is coming, I place them under the eave of the roof. This has worked for me so far.
I propagate English ivy in water, been a few years , but weirdly I learned one will die and crisp up and the other one--in the same pot -stays healthy. Why?
Someone told me to put Willow tree cuttings in the water with my cuttings as this will stimulate root growth. Disclaimer: I have not tried this, as there are not any Willow trees where I live.
You plant gets dirty all the when you have widows open. The lights is what giving the white stuff on your plants. I noticed this when I have our windows open. So yes I have clean my plants leaves all the time, no way my plants can survive with close windows lol

they thrive in moist, damp soil so take care to not overwater, have good drainage + let the soil dry out between waterings. as for getting rid of them i've seen apple cider vinegar traps, potato chunks, or dluted hydrogen peroxide sprays suggested but i don't have personal experience w any of those. i'd probably repot a plant if i noticed it was harboring gnats, sometimes the eggs come right along with prepackaged soil
Rooting hormone only costs $3 at my store, so I'd rather just add a small amount to my water propogation. Techplant also found that pothos don't do much to speed things up on the propogation front

I go water, spagnum moss, soil. Water to soil almost always fails.

Puppy pads work really well and they can be reused. Price varies depending on where you purchase. Just a thought.

I put a single leaf of my ficus altissima into the vase that houses my golden pothos cutting. To my surprise, the leaf grew roots after a week even without any nodes. Now I wonder if it ever grows shoots.

I know you've had fungus gnat issues, have you thought that the compost mix you have is too enticing for them? I recently swapped to a much chunkier mix and gnats are gonne!
They can come back if roots rot. But then, their presence signals a problem that should be addressed. Never thought fungus gnats would become handy one day.

I’m very confused about watering. You say to water from the bottom, meaning watering in the dish it sits in or the planter the plastic planter the plant is potted in. I always thought this creates root rot. You mention in this video that plants sitting in water will cause root rot. What’s the best way to water my plants?
You pour away any water thats still in the pot after 30 minutes. If it were to stay there for longer it would cause root rot 😌
Root rot is more about a lack of oxygen in the soil. They’re fine sitting in a bit of water for a few hours. It should soak it all up anyway
Speaking of pesky fungus gnats, I have a Nepenthes x Ventrata and it has actually kept the gnat problem at bay. I’m not waking up to fungus gnats buzzing around my head. I haven’t for many months now

Great tips! Just be aware if, after showering your plants, don't put them in full sun outside! The water droplets can result in solar burns.

The latter works with a wick made of a material that changes colour when wet. Inspired by this, back in the days when I had my plants in soil, I used a wick from the center of the rootzone, hanging out of the pot through the drainage hole. By feeling how humid the wick still was, I was able to say, if the plant needed a drink.

My kittens broke some stems off of my zz about 2 weeks ago and just to see what would happen i dropped them into bottles with pothos and other prop plants in my bath. So far so good i noticed roots earier! I was very happy of that!
@@karriemosley7317zz plant can be propagated using their leaves in the water. Arrange them in a styrofoam then let them float. It is very easy to clean the container and change the water.

I take my overwatered house plants outside and place them in the sun. If rain is coming, I place them under the eave of the roof. This has worked for me so far.

Someone told me to put Willow tree cuttings in the water with my cuttings as this will stimulate root growth. Disclaimer: I have not tried this, as there are not any Willow trees where I live.

You plant gets dirty all the when you have widows open. The lights is what giving the white stuff on your plants. I noticed this when I have our windows open. So yes I have clean my plants leaves all the time, no way my plants can survive with close windows lol

How can I get rid of gnats?
Mosquito bits, or captain jacks, and yellow sticky tapes.
they thrive in moist, damp soil so take care to not overwater, have good drainage + let the soil dry out between waterings. as for getting rid of them i've seen apple cider vinegar traps, potato chunks, or dluted hydrogen peroxide sprays suggested but i don't have personal experience w any of those. i'd probably repot a plant if i noticed it was harboring gnats, sometimes the eggs come right along with prepackaged soil

It is yes. Plastic pots have drainage holes which is the main thing. Terra cotta can work for the right plant
I know they are on the more expensive side but EasyPlant pots have been game-changing for me.

Rooting hormone only costs $3 at my store, so I'd rather just add a small amount to my water propogation. Techplant also found that pothos don't do much to speed things up on the propogation front
