The pilot kept going straight because he would have pulled an unnecessary amount of Gs to go any other direction after firing the missile. They let it fly very far over the us before it was shot down, it flew over multiple us air bases and probably collected a lot of information. I don’t think it was as fast of a reaction as it could have been.

Sensor packages work better in atmosphere than on satellites just due to range. The possibility of looking at underground facilities is very real with new developed technologies. The balloon could also be waiting to scan the aircraft sent to shoot it and gather electronic information on the missile and sensor package of the f-22... I'm just guessing of course but it's interesting.
Now it makes me wonder if it was possible for special forces to board the platform with all the unknown hardware, attach some parachutes and then detach the balloon.
That was my question but this was an X model and apparently its seeker is extremely sensitive to heat. The old Vietnam era sidewinders wouldnt be able to lock on but this model can.

Most likely the intelligence they would have tried to glean would be signals intelligence. Things like radio transmissions and other electromagnetic emissions from our military installations and hardware. By having the ability to loiter for days over the US with some ability to maneuver as it passed critical installations, the possibility for higher fidelity signals intelligence gathering was there. Albeit, I am sure the US took plenty of steps to minimize military activities, communications, emissions, visible hardware (in case of imaging capability), and may have even taken active steps to try and interfere with its communication abilities.

Conventional artillery couldn’t work because the pilot would have to shoot facing up into the stratosphere, not to mention there was the risk of hitting the payload and causing damage that would render it beyond analysis by the military/CIA. Instead, there must have been some sort of heat emanating from the balloon, probably from its propulsion system (propellers) that allowed for a sidewinder to lock-on to instead.

The US military can hide stuff, when a satellite orbits above it. A small balloon like this will be harder to notice and could slip in unnoticed. Interesting they took it out using a Sidewinder which is a heatseeker, there was probably a small engine onboard used for propulsion, otherwise, its surface would have been too cold to lock on, which convinces me more that it really wasn't a weather balloon.

Or they just wanted the missile to hit the balloon. Contrary to popular belief, it takes time to turn. The pilot kept going straight because he would have pulled an unnecessary amount of Gs to go any other direction after firing the missile. The only time you would do that is if you’re in a combat situation so unless the balloon is shooting back, there’s no need to potentially injure the pilot or damage the aircraft

That was my question but this was an X model and apparently its seeker is extremely sensitive to heat. The old Vietnam era sidewinders wouldnt be able to lock on but this model can.
Sidewinders don't have active or passive radar, its all about the heat sensitivity of the seeker.

What can that balloon see what satellites already can’t
It’s been state that can see much close inside the earth atmosphere. Plus other intelligence detectors ideally best in lower atmosphere for clearer results.
spy satellites are 300+ kilometres distance from earth, whereas surveillance balloons are only about 30 or so km up, so big difference in terms of quality of data that can be collected.
Most likely the intelligence they would have tried to glean would be signals intelligence. Things like radio transmissions and other electromagnetic emissions from our military installations and hardware. By having the ability to loiter for days over the US with some ability to maneuver as it passed critical installations, the possibility for higher fidelity signals intelligence gathering was there. Albeit, I am sure the US took plenty of steps to minimize military activities, communications, emissions, visible hardware (in case of imaging capability), and may have even taken active steps to try and interfere with its communication abilities.

Conventional artillery couldn’t work because the pilot would have to shoot facing up into the stratosphere, not to mention there was the risk of hitting the payload and causing damage that would render it beyond analysis by the military/CIA. Instead, there must have been some sort of heat emanating from the balloon, probably from its propulsion system (propellers) that allowed for a sidewinder to lock-on to instead.
What surprise me is....how united States took so long on this situation......shows it's weakness to the homeland security.

The US military can hide stuff, when a satellite orbits above it. A small balloon like this will be harder to notice and could slip in unnoticed. Interesting they took it out using a Sidewinder which is a heatseeker, there was probably a small engine onboard used for propulsion, otherwise, its surface would have been too cold to lock on, which convinces me more that it really wasn't a weather balloon.

The whole thing is almost funny if not for how serious everyone sounds. The US could send its own "weather" balloon over China and let them blow it out of the sky. Like make it into a kind of sport that becomes an annual tradition where pilots of different nations show off their skills popping balloons. Oh well.
Ya China lost a pilot and a plane the last time they "played the game." They then tried turning it into a global incident by claiming the United States killed their pilot, when their pilot crashed his jet into their spy plane.
China is a child, which has no concept of team work, playing by the rules, or how not to cry and fill your diaper.

Apparently the carriage the balloon was carrying was the size of two busses. That's why the pentagon wanted to wait to shoot it. So maybe it was carrying much more pricey equipment than we think. It's not unreasonable to think that the engineering and manpower plus real materials and equipment could easily push that balloon to a 40,000 - 400,000 british pound price range. But yeah I dont have any real facts just speculation.
