Fun fact: Píšťala means flute, or whistle (the latter being etymologically close) and it most likely spawned the word for a short firearm - pistol. But if I'm not mistaken, the píšťala was soon replaced by hákovnice - a hook gun. It had a 90° claw on the underside designed to catch on a wagon, a wall, or that shield, to transmit recoil there instead the shooter.
For extend, it was more using profesional wagon drivers, that gave them the edge. Wagons were used for centuries, but using actual profesionals to drive them was a new thing.
I just want to mention, that the czech name of the handheld cannons "píšťala" (you can translate it as organ pipe) is where the word "pistol" comes from.
0:01 scared me there for a second! Glad to see the Hussites War Wagons getting some love cuz in late medieval warfare it’s not always about knight cavalry or longbow man sometimes it’s about what u got on hand and making the best of it in order to defeat your foes!
I always thought the Hussites is the inspiration for the rhodoks in mount and blade warband. Those giant shields and their peasant origins, and their tendency to knock snobby knights down a notch.
It's an often repeated myth that early handcannons were ineffective. While inaccurate from more than 50 yards, they do very well against most armor of the age (which was pressured to improve). They were shot only when the enemy was close enough, ensuring they pay a heavy price for trying to close in.
3:46 actually how I understand it is that soft armours were more effective against cuts than blunt force. As the thick cloth is meant to stop slicing however you’d need a lot more linen to actually cushion the force of a mace.
Honestly, I was afraid that you wouldn't upload a new episode of Feature Fittings due to the bad reception of the first episode, but I am glad that that didn't stopped you, I liked the first episode as well as this one, and I hope you will be doing more in the future. Greetings!

I see some interesting parallels to the modern battlefield here. Many names of firearms come from hussites. You mentioned howitzer that comes from word houfnice (buncher), or pistol, that comes from píšťala (flute). Word arquebus comes from totally mutated word hákovnice ( hook piece) A hand held gun that was secured to sides of a war wagoon by a hook. Making recoil manageable.

most certainly because it defies simple logic. cloth armor only helps agaist slices and grazes and shallow pokes
Not really. The cloth can spread the hit nicely. Of course it's not as good as mail or plate, but it definitely isn't ineffective.
