Just a correction, no Japanese brand car, low cost or premium was ever manufactured in Korea. This is because of a strong rivalry between Korea and Japan as the most developed and Industrialized in Asia. The market was dominated by Hyundai, Daewoo, and KIA, which were also primary competitors of Toyota at the time so it would not make sense for them to do that. Japanese cars were primarily manufactured overseas in Thailand, Philippines, and China which also was the manufacturing ground for Korean auto makers.

I've owned a few falcons over the years, they were fantastic vehicles. A little thirsty for fuel, but reliable and so comfortable for long trips. Not the fastest, but the big 6 cylinders had so much torque they towed effortlessly, and even loaded up with people and luggage it performed well. It was truly a sad day when the last falcon rolled off the assembly line.
I never owned a Commodore, I was always a Ford man, partly because I knew people who worked at the Broady Ford plant, and partly because I preferred the design of the Falcon 6 over the Holden 6, and it's better torque output.
I have fond memories of going on long trips, my XF Falcon with LTD interior and 4 speed manual climbing hills without me needing to shift down out of 4th gear, that reliable 6 burbling away as it ate up the kilometers... Or later, my EF towing another car on a car trailer without any drama, again on a long trip... Built with pride, they certainly seemed to be, and I was proud to own them, and now wish I hadn't got rid of them... But hey, we were all young and dumb once upon a time, right?

    • @FarmingtonS9
      @FarmingtonS9 4 роки тому +5

I can second the reliability of the Falcon BF (Mk2). I have one, and it came from a fleet of taxis that ran around Brisbane. The first BF I had, had 820,000 km on the speedo and the second BF I owned had over 730,000 km. My dad was telling me (since he was a mechanic for this taxi company) that the same vehicles in this same fleet were running up to and above 1,000,000 km.
I like my BF, and especially the Barra engine in it. It's a nice ride, a bit rough. But it's still running.
I want to keep mine running for as long as I can since parts for most of the car are not hard to find, so running costs are manageable. In fact, for someone who is not a mechanic, I enjoy fiddling around with parts and replacing some of the old shit in it (should have seen the overflow tank - full of muck and I don't think it has been changed since its taxi days).
For me, the Falcon has special place in my heart as my first car, as my dad's first car (XY Falcon paddock bomb).

Australia shafted their own industry tho and the stupid micromanagement of GM.
GM basically ruined Holden much like how they ruined Saab with their stupid rebadging habits and what-not.
Holden had the biggest slice of the pie in the 70s and 80s with cars like the Monaro, Torana, Kingswood and Commodore. Those are amazing stuff the Australians had and watching the A9X Torana cutting everything on Barthurst was superbly amazing even 40 odd years ago till now. However, once GM micromanages and used the rebadging system, the self-created element is gone and as you mentioned, everything else was nothing but a rebadged item which, lets be frank, are most junks. Items like the Zafira, Spark, Caprice, Calibra, Insignia, Cruze etc etc are all either Chevys, Opels, Daewoos or other sub branches within GM. Sure, GM reused Holdens into other things too like when they took the C8 Monaro as the Vauxhall Monaro but then again these Australian rebadge had such poor presentations in their exported country that GM basically tanked the sales of these cars and instantly declared that the Australian branches must fold due to "lack of financial posibilities" when its GM themselves fucking themselves over... Hard.
Ford had it better but still, their focus on "Australian cars for Australia" also saw them tanking their sales as even if they can make cars for Australia alone, they won't survive if they don't branch out and that's the problem with Ford AUS.

swietoslaw we took pride in having locally developed cars (even if some weren’t completely engineered in Australia). It’s not just the cost of the cars ( The Toyota Camry was locally built since 1987 and always sold well) . There was the Button plan to reduce import tariffs from the mid 80’s every year until 2003 ( I think). In the early 2000’s , Novated Leasing allowed the employee to choose their car, instead of the narrow choice of Falcon/Commodore/Camry/ Magna. SUV’s gained popularity, as most were now 2wd , not 4wd and more compact (like the RAV4). Australia roughly sells 1Million new cars a year, with about 30-33% being company cars. Poland just sells over half as many new cars in one year as Australia does , which has a population 25 Mil , compared to your 39 Mil.

In other words, the total sales volume of the Australian car market could never make local manufacturing and development a profitable venture. Australian made cars were effectively money pits for their parent companies. As popular as the Falcon and Commodore were, their sales volume barely crested 100,000 units per year. And with limited exports this was simply too low to justify continuing production.

Ford - manufacture of trucks in Brisbane, and small cars in Sydney. With a smattering of small plants in other cities.
AMI: who were a contract manufacturer who assembled knockdown kits on behalf of a number of European manufacturers from VW, Volvo to Merc but also started Toyota assembly in Australia.
Nissan, who made cars up until the early 90s but still have a factory in Australia making bash plates bullbars and the like.
Government subsidies are also done in other countries around the world. But to a higher extent per capita than they did in Australia.

Oh but there were so many other brands and car factories in Australia than just Holden, Ford and Toyota. Nissan made cars in Melbourne at a former Volkswagen factory. Chrysler had 2 plants in Adelaide before selling them to Mitsubishi. Leyland made local models of British designs in Australian factories and cars like Renault, Peugeot and a heap of others were locally assembled too. All depended on tariffs and/or government subsidies, so from making half a million cars in 1970, they're all gone except for truck makers.

man i miss the Mitsubishi 380, IMO the best of the Australian Large cars that never got the chance to stretch its legs, so many folks forget that the Australia only cars weren't just the Falcon and Commodore, but included the Territory, the 380, the Magna to list Australian Exclusive cars since 2000, and even more made here.
the real shot in the foot is that the decisions were made when the Australian dollar was at historical record highs, and was treated as a permanent reality. if the dollar hadn't of shot up so much Australian Manufacturing would of likely continued, Toyota was using the Melbourne plant to suppliment productions of parts for the US due to the pricing making it an affordable option over Japanese manufacturing for example, and Holden was starting to expand into the Export trade again with the likes of the Chevvy SS and the vauxall VXR8, but out strong dollar made these cars to expensive overseas for the propsective consumer at the time, if available now with the new market they would be able to be competitive on pricing.
