- The last of the Fantasy Flight 40k RPGs, this time focusing in great detail on the workings of the Imperial Guard. A military RPG all the way, this one shines with its custom regiment generation allowing for dozens of ways to play, so if the players get bored they can play the same campaign over and over and never get bored.
I've played Only War, our Squad had a motto "The Blood Magpies take anything that isn't bolted down, We have bolt cutters"

Played Only War once, we were fighting a Genestealer cult in an industrial hive, had a motto, "Shoot first, second, third, fourth... fuck it, shoot em all, and let the Emperor sort em out."
We we're loved by the inquisitor because by the time he showed up we had done killed everything that didn't have cybernetics and completely erradicated the cult in our hive while the other 9 hives had all fallen and we became the last bastion against a Hive splinter. We all died but we had a combined kill count in excess of 9.5 million seeing as we nuked the spire we were holed up in before they got through the door.
I approve of the appropriate amount of the xeno hatred displayed here.

The hyper-intelligent cyborg Ogryn captain leading a regiment does sound like a great time.
If only to see the looks of horror and confusion on the faces out outsiders being introduced to the raw "impossibility" of it all...
Sadly, The Inquisition would probably come calling eventually, either to recruit him, or erase him for the crime of being contradictory to offical Imperial knowledge.
I remember our GM allowing each player to be from different regiments...with a few caveats. And our campaign ended on a cliffhanger. The Brawler got lost in the Warp, our Commissar was critically injured...and the church we're resting was surrounded by Chaos troopers...
And somehow our GM continued with Dark Heresy with my Sniper now an Inqusition acolyte, spec into Assassin. We all joked that the records of our Only War campaign was sealed under orders of the Inquisition.

The randomness of the logistics systhem caused our group to make the "Alpha Complexian Troubleshooters" regiment.
Wait, there is a game where I can attempt to recreate Commissar Raege & her assistant, the ever-bubbly Psyker Alice Boone?!? I'm in!

Our gaming group ran a Mystara campaign in which Thyatis had more of a 40K flavor. They slowly worked themselves up into a Inquisitor squad, hunting heretics and alphatian mages.
The Eisenhorn and Ravnor books might have had something to do with this.😉
I remember a friend of mine who was playing this mashed with Dark Heresy as a Commissar. He managed to "acquire" an Eldar girlfriend after beating her in melee. Either a Harlequin or a Banshee, cant remember. Both the Inquisition and the Guard sanctioned this as she turned out to be a useful source of information.
I remember the Only War campaign I played in; planetary security on a Death World, tapped to join a regiment after one shows up to fight the Tyranid invasion that is destroying our world. I nuked the Hive the rest of the party was from on session one before the Guard even showed up.
I clicked Like for the sole purpose of supporting the tournament rant.
Played a vehicle recovery group once that was " accidently" assigned a psyker. Game very quickly became the 40K version of repo men... Our crowning achievement was when we looted a battle wagon out from under an up and coming Ork warlord's nose. I say crowning because the psyker was a little to good at making us look like orks, and well, our regiments fire support wasn't the smartest...damn good at firing for effect though...:)
A well-played Imperial Guard army is terrifying to behold. On the other hand, a poorly-played army is lunch for any number of armies.
My group last week made a close combat mining world regement with hadies breaching drill and anti armour training. So basicly its a bunch of miners with shotguns and melta guns and swords
This was my first rpg I physical got all the copies of. I played it so much I could make regiments without even needing to look at the books. Also the setting of Only War isn't just a single planet it's a whole sub-sector that gets screwed all because one guy's ancestor got outshined by a Living Saint and your fighting guys with roman aesthetics.
Thanks for reminding me how fantastically good rough Rider Calvary needs to be in 40K. I mean yeah they're still gardening they're going to drop like flies you're going to take a lot done with you in the process.
Imperial Guard need much more love. I hope we get a new edition of Only War in tbe future. Hopefully with some new regiments to expand the lore and roster of the Guard.
I started as a Warhammer 40k fan in 2nd edition, but never got any of the rulebooks. I found some at a bargain and saw how different the rules were. I really like the idea of armies not having HQ/Elite/Troops/Fast Attack/Heavy Support slots. Those are handicaps, limiters, restrictions. I like the 2e way of "spend 50%+ of your points on army guys", so that you could have armies of Rough Riders.
After playing dark heresy, i find that i like combat and rp more than investigating. I'd like to give this system a go.

But the real question is a simple one. If you play as a Commissar, can you execute another player's character in the party to help "motivate" the rest of party?
Normally you have to start with a comrade but yes

Sounds like Captain Bob was the closest thing the Imperium has to an Ork Nob or Warboss.
Also, which 40K RPG would be best for doing small groups like the Ciaphas Cain novels? Seems like Dark Heresy fits the theme of many of the books, but Rogue Trader or Only War would be more in line with the power level of Cain and his ablative meat.

The comedy potential is right there with this system. Do a parody of M*A*S*H*. Have an entire squad made up of Commissars. A tank crew would be a great campaign where the players battle the enemy of the difficulties of keeping their war machine going. White Tiger is a Russian WWII movie where a Soviet tank driver survives being burned over his entire body. He's basically a revenant who battle a white Tiger tank that seems to be powered by supernatural, Nazi evil. Make it a Chaos tainted Baneblade. Give the crew an experimental, juiced up Leman Russ and have at it.
