- Why play brand new Switch games when you can play Badly and Poorly Aged Video games? Who needs a Playstation 4 when you can play Goldeneye and feel immense amounts of sadness? Me, thats who.
Also, Super Mario 64 has aged well. Hush. It's basically the Despacito of Dark Souls of music.

I played Devil May Cry for the first time last year and I still really enjoyed. it may be a bit clunky but it still has great bosses. enemy design. atmosphere and a lot of heart
Lord Blue Balls EX the gets me triggered too much
Thank you
The jump cancelling and DT balancing work way better in one than the aborted one.
I just beat it for the 1st time a few months ago and yes it's a classic game, still really great and fun. Ppl are idiots for saying the first game in a great series all of a sudden isn't good anymore, just because the sequels (namely 3 in this case) did what they're supposed to do...improve the formula. Very unfair judgment.
Agreed

The original DMC is still one of my favorite games 😊
Oh yeah it's still good! I just at this point think that it's getting a lil dusty. Especially when I play me some dmc3!
Austin Eruption I tried dmc3 after playing the original...but some of the camera angle and puzzle shenanigans are still present. I couldn't figure out where to go after the centipede looking boss, so I gave up on it after a while.
Tiger Festivals that your fault not the games
Yeah, I disagree with its inclusion on this list. The camera can be a pain and the combat has been greatly improved in the sequels, but DMC still feels great to play because of its excellent level design, pacing, and atmosphere.
Eachasteriod13 Not really, the puzzle stuff is really unnecessary. Made some parts feel more like a chore. Little annoyances really add up.
How dare you crop out the "Mega Milk"
A great meme, a better doujinshi.

Eh, I got to dmc1 after playing 3&4 and it held up pretty well in my oppinion
#1Slayer The only dmc that's bad is 2. This is factual and common knowledge
You are not wrong. DMC1 has aged pretty well for a game that basically invented how to do hack and slash action in 3D. You should watch Matthewmatosis' lengthy video if you want to get a greater appreciation for how the mechanics of that game mesh together. Hideki Kamiya and his team got an incredible amount of things right on that first try.
One thing they didn't get right however was the camera. Combine the wonky camera with high difficulty and it might lead some frustrated gamers to conclude that DMC1 aged poorly overall.
I think DMC1 is closer to Resident Evil with a sword, than a pure character action game. So if you go in expecting cool action and multiple different combos you are going to be disappointing.
every DMC1's badly aged aspect is almost the same as Resident Evil 1 - mainly cringy dialog and bad camera control. The combat held up pretty well although the pace that you acquire new moves is a little slow, but that's true for all the sequels as well (except for DmC, on normal it's ridiculously easy that you can earn enough points to unlock necessary moves)
Quy Nguyen
I just recently played DMC 1. The combat was a bunch of fun. Also, I don’t see how the unlocks were slow when the game was very short.
I SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONE TO FILL YOUR DARKSOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIGHT!
I still found DMC 1 to be quite enjoyable. Sure, it's not as combo heavy, but I still had fun with what was there. It's not an uncontroable mess like you make it out to be. It's limited, and the platforming is frustrating. But it's still a fun game with solid mechanics, intriguing designs, and fun bosses.
I respectfully disagree with DMC1, personally I think it still holds up pretty well.
This is one series where i will say i loved the remakes way better than the originals..
@@darkwaterentertianme you love the remake? You mean the reboot DmC?

woudnt a game that has aged poorly make sence to be remade?
i dont see how a game dosent deserve a remake if it can make a game thats aged poorly playable to modern audiences
Its more of a question of whether its worth dumping resources into redoing an old game over using that investment to male new games with new ideas.
Like would you rather DMC1 be remade just to make it a game competent by today's standards or would you prefer that the resources be used to make DMC5?
thepokefan891 I agree quite honestly. You can make a not-so-good game much better by today’s standards. Just look at Fire Emblem Gaiden compared to its remake, Fire Emblem Echoes. Or Metroid 2: Return of Samus compared to its remake, Metroid: Samus Returns.
I think he's using "remake" to refer to "remaster," which I honestly can't criticize him too much over because those two terms have become so overused and misused that they can in some cases be used to mean the same thing.
For me, a remake would be something along the lines of the RE2 remake, which completely overhauls the gameplay and visuals to a modern standard. A remaster keeps the same basic gameplay but updates the visuals to some degree, whether that's just a resolution boost or a total overhaul like SOTC and Crash got. I'm fine with either approach as long as the final product is good and maintains the spirit of the original if not the visuals or moment-to-moment gameplay.
thepokefan891
Then you have EA, remaking the well-aged Battlefront series but putting in less gameplay, that's also poorly designed, and pay-to-win features.
Honestly why didn't they just remake the original games in their entirity, with upgraded graphics and NO gambling features? Easy money there.
zachanikwano - The new Battlefront games are more of a reboot than any remake or remaster of the old games. They're so far removed from the original design (even the genre has changed from TPS to FPS) that it's kinda disingenuous to say they're connected outside of the name.
I am very sensitive please do not atac
Austin Eruption cool how would you feel about a Diddy Kong Racing sequel that added characters from My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia, Kirby, The Amazing World of Gumball, Bomberman, RWBY, Pop Team Epic, Family Guy, and Persona 5 and FLCL?
Jet Force Gemini remake but every enemy is a Dark Souls comparison
Ecco the Dolphin on the Genesis may not have aged well, but Defender of the Future for the Dreamcast definitely did. Those animations are *still* amazing, insane story aside.
Your hair is stoopid
Resident evil ps1 is actually still really good imo
interesting. i played DMC1 for the first time like 1 month ago and even if i thought that some fights were stupidly hard (the mundus boss fight) and fighting the same boss again and again was kinda boring, i felt it held up pretty well!

I played the original Devil May Cry just a few years ago and actually had a great time. I feel it’s aged pretty well for being a title from 2001 and being a pioneer in the action genre.
Alot of people are talking about milk. I guess they really love milk
Its because the video has a reminder of milk investments.
Particularly of the mega variety
Milk is a straw man conspiracy made by Big Soy to separate the people and sell more "lactose free" alternatives.
Nah, DMC1 is still a fantastic game. It's got issues, sure, but it's got so much good stuff, too.
Have you played it recently?
@Logan Brodnax I never played It so I don't know if it holds up
Revisiting Jet Force Gemini in Rare Replay was a real nostalgia buster. The N64 tech and controller just weren’t capable of what Rare was going for with it. I wouldn’t be against Microsoft getting another dev to try and reboot it, hopefully playing on its goofier aspects and not gritting it up to be just like Halo and Gears.
Star Fox Assault ground missions are pretty good, and that's basically a slightly updated JFG.
JFG holds up imo, especially the Rare Replay version. It’s by no means perfect, but one of the best sci-fi 3rd person shooters of that era and to this day.
What the heck are you smoking? The game tried to be serious. Why would you try to amp up the goofier aspect when that wasn't the original goal
Brave Fencer Musashi, what a legendary game.
Levyathyn Not really.
I thought most people liked Ecco the Dolphin but it seems like every game reviewer ever hates Ecco.
I actually think it's once of those games no one actually played or knew about, then it gained a cult following as being the "unique" or "weird" game in the 00s, and got released on PC, Xbox Live Arcade, Wii Virtual Console etc., but then was *too* mainstream by the 2010s and then it became cool to hate on it.
The controls take getting used to (or clunky if you will), the puzzles are bad and most levels are just convoluted to eat up air. It's not surprising why a lot of people didn't like it. The visuals, music and story are all top notch though. I think it's prime material for a remake.
I rented it when it was new and it was fuckin' awful. The first stage isn't supposed to be that difficult!
What can I say? I was a slow kid. And the few times I got past the first level, I'd just die in the second level anyway. =/
I love Ecco. It's mood is it's strongest quality sure, but the game really controls pretty well despite the shell pushing puzzles which are finicky.
The last couple levels are overly hard to make sure you couldn't beat it on a rental, but other than that it's really good.
And fuck this guy the Genesis music is top notch.
Austin one of these dyas you need to have a "weird fps games" and BREAKDOWN should deff be there

i remember loving jet force gemini, but i mostly played it PvP against my brother i think.
also, goldeneye worked fine with the N64 controller... so long as you used the turok controls (c buttons to move/strafe, stick for looking). it was basically WASD+mouse on consoles. once i started using that control scheme i started kicking my older brother's ass at goldeneye, which didn't happen before then.
Gotta disagree on DMC 1. It still age kinda well today. What is not is the second one.

Ecco the dolphin gets intense, when you get to the alien levels. Only hardcore gamers know.
I only have Tides of Time, I could never get far, it was awesome.
The original game is just..something!
The story is literally Ecco's family just getting sucked out of the sea, & Ecco just swims through dark caves, open oceans with sharks & crabs that try to maul him, ice cold waters, goes to a lost city, goes back in time to the dinosaurs & nearly gets eaten by dunkleosteus, then fights a DNA God, gets powers given to him by that DNA God, and then time travels so he can get sucked up with his family...to then decapitate aliens!
I would say the 1st & 2nd Bad Futures is where Ecco: Defender of the Future picks up (Man's Nightmare & Dolphin's Nightmare).
It's literally an abandoned factory dystopia with abused dolphins created by humans in one timeline, & then N*zi Dolphins bullying other dolphin cultures in another timeline!
And that's after the original timeline part where you explore caves & fight a giant shark. The whole game can be intense. Either way, love the game & the other 2 original games (Ecco & Ecco The Tides of Time).
Ecco Jr is some backstory game with no threats in it, & Ecco Jr on the Sega Pico is just bad.
Bruh i tried playing that stoned as hell one night and actually had fun lmao
I'm glad you stuck with games that had a personal connection to you, it makes this list more memorable than others covering the same topic. I'm also disappointed in myself for knowing exactly what your screensaver is.

I played DMC for the first time the other week and I loved it. Maybe I’m weird
18:10 YOU HAD ME IN THE FIRST HALF NOT GONNA LIE
Jet Force Gemini reminds me of Men in Black. Mostly cuz it's a game about space police who fight bugs. This was cool to discover.
I get that DMC 1 compared to modern games of the genre can make it seem kind of quaint and dated, but judging it by its own standard I think it holds up extremely well. I also think it has the best hardest difficulty (Dante Must Die Mode) of the entire series as the DMD in other entries makes enemies feel a little too tedious. And while DMC1's combat might not top some of the genre's latest and greatest, I'd still hold it up above most other action heavy games that have released recently, especially games with floaty Arkham style combat.
I booted up DMC1 (pc hd remaster) a couple of days ago to check out one tiny detail and ended up beating the whole thing. It's aged way better than i remembered (with an updated control scheme).
It's nothing like 3 or 4, but the combat is still satisfying in it's own way, it's more about exploiting enemies weaknesses rather than styling them into oblivion. The only issue i had the whole way was Mundus' first stage, which has inverted flying controls but only for the vertical axis.
I'm not quite sure how you got to that conclusion on DMC1's story. It's so simple and barebones I fail to see how it'd ever be called non-sensical or baffling.
It's gameplay is slow and limited though, but at least it's dialogue is accidentally funny instead of DMC2's... uh, did DMC2 have any characters?
A lot of plot twists like angelo being dantes brother who is never mentioned in any great detail until the reveal make ot seem like you didnt catch the plot when it was happening. Dante just goes "that was my brother" and the first time player can only go "ok? Who?"
Likewise "i could have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIIIIIIIGHT" comes off as extremely awkward not just from poor axting but because they take it completely seriously like the player is supposed to empathize with dante being sad overthis romantic interest he barely spoke to.
Altogether the story can feel like 2 or 3 cutscenes establishing things like dantes brother or developing dante and trish's relationship didnt make it i to the game.
Like the core story is simple but the beats in it make it feel more complicated than it is
Flaming Fighter I guess you could experience it like that, but I didn't.
I had read the description of the amulet, so I knew Dante had a brother named Vergil, and Trish mentions his brother is gone in the opening scene. So after he freaks out when he sees the amulet and takes his helmet off, I knew "Oh, it's his brother, that makes sense. Neat."
The "liiiGGGGHHHT" line is what I meant by accidentally funny, I burst out laughing when he said it.
Yeah my overall point is that they make big emotional story beats about scenes lime those two, but theres so little setup overall in the narrative that it can feel like your missing aomething.
Vergil is mentioned in the beginning and in the amulet which i alsp read as early as possible, and then its never really mentioned again until that scene towards the end and the gravitas makes idt seem like there would be at least 1 or 2 scenes where he talks about his brptjer, preferably talking to trish since it would also develop their relationship enough that dante being devastated by her loss could make more sense beyind just her appearance
I've played DMC again when that collection came out and these are my two cents:
1) I was much better at it the second time having been playing these types of games for years now =p
2) It is very limited if compared to newer iterations, that much is true, but it still is very much playable and there definitely is fun to be had.
Jet Force Gemini is that one Rare game on the N64 that I've never played and people have been dissing it for over a decade now. I'm almost convinced it is that bad even if I never touched it. But you couldn't talk me out of Musashi. I own it and I'm still gonna play it. Some day...
having played dmc1 for the first time a month ago, the camera is the game's biggest obstacle. well that and the fact that i'm bad at dmc games. everyone else seemed to have an easier time getting through it than me.
Homestar20845 bro u aren’t alone, I agree with you.
I picked it up recently and I relate. I thought years of playing would make me prepared for that, but no, it's Ds and Cs all over. I fucking suck
Lol, I played Devil May Cry 1 in 2018 and it was perfectly fine, I was actually very surprised with how well it aged considering its from 2001.
Yes, a new video from Austin :). I just found your channel this summer, and my first video was the one about Danganronpa and I was hooked. So naturally I binged most of your videos this summer. Your mix of review, lists, analysis and so on is just what I am looking for when finding youtube channels. Keep it coming man.
Would rock if you did a video on Nine Hours, Nine Person, Nine Doors and the rest of the series if you have played them :)!
oi. poorly-aged games are why remakes are invented.
i mean, metroid 1 aged terribly, but zero mission ends up being one of the best games in the series.
a good remake can fix many, many poorly-aging games problems.
Games do not age. We don't need remakes
Brave Fencer Musashi might not have aged all that well, but it had a ton of charm and personality. The voice acting alone was pretty good for the time, and it helped make the world and characters that much more alive and real. I also really liked how you could go around unlocking new areas with your powers that weren't necessarily hard to miss, but still out of the way enough to warrant and reward exploration. To this day I have yet to see another game with cheese aging mechanics.
Man if you haven't played Furi, do it. Have spare controller handy for after you break the first.
I agree with most of the things aging poorly but for me part of the charm of going back to games is honestly how clunky they are. I don't know there's some kind of weird charm to how clunky games like Tomb Raider are.
I hate to be that guy, I really do, but it's really odd (and a bit hypocritical) to hear someone who I know really likes JRPGs say he can't get into Collectathon platformers because "they are artificial time-wasters that sacrifice interesting gameplay or story moments in favor of numbers"
I'm sure you have a better explanation for that and you just didn't want to get into much detail in this video because it has nothing to do with that, I just thought it was kind of a weird tangent. I'm sure you have legit and more detailed reasons for not being into Collectathons. And even if you don't, just not being into a certain genre of games is a-ok. It happens.
I deff think I sounded a bit harsher than intended there. But it's more so something like a JRPG usually has a narrative that keeps you going where as something like Donkey Kong 64 is just... you know.
I noticed you had a problem with DK64 especially. And I kinda agree with you. That game had way too many collectibles for a regular collectathon. Especially because of the multiple playable characters. It's overwhelming and not as fun to complete as other collectathons.
ObsidiusFan Banjo-Kazooie is my all time favorite game, and DK64 is almost as nostalgic for me, but I can barely stand to play DK64 these days
Are you implying that there's something inherent to JRPGs that makes them time wasters that lack interesting gameplay and stories? The only thing that links his opinions on collectathons to JRPGs is that they both have numbers. JRPGs have numbers as a necessary element to increase the player character's performance in combat or diplomacy or whatever, it's for meaningful and uselfull progression. Collectathons just have numbers to incentivize players to go grab more of a useless item that doesn't do anything but go towards your completion percentage.
Found the banjo babby
Let's not forget that impossible boss fight with Mizar at the end where you have to shoot his back with only homing missiles. It was near impossible to aim within 1 second but what screwed me over were the upgrade canisters. You can give a character a lot of upgrades for one weapon and have the other lacking that ammunition. And unfortunately, they never told me that I needed to have somewhere near 25 or more on my main character to safely take him down. To this day I have that uncompleted save file for that stupid mistake.
Honestly I don't really understand the your point about Devil May Cry 1. the game still holds up well today, I mean of course it doesn't hold a candle to Devil May Cry 3 or even Devil May Cry 2 but combat, level design, enemy design, boss battles it still hold up.
The only thing that I'll agree with you on is the camera and the voice acting but I will say that part of the charm of Devil May Cry 1 is it's voice acting
Aging poorly would refer to the phenomena of a game feeling dated in comparison to modern iterations of the genre.
Hes not saying dmc1 is bad to play now, just that the genre and sequels ot served as the foundation for has improved such that its no longer necessarily a "must play" to experience what the medium has to offer.
Dmc1 isnt dayed because its bad now, its dated because dmc3, dmc4, bayonetta, and other character action games have improved greatly on the formula.
In a different vein, games like RE: Remake havent necessarily aged badly poorly because games of its style kind of stopped coming out and the games that have come out afterwards dont necessarily improve the subgenre its carved out of
Flaming Fighter well I think I said that compared to the other games in the franchise it doesn't hold a candle but it still holds up pretty well
MrJRonin i mean what youre saying is literally the premise of the video so i guess i got confused when you said you didnt understand the point of his dmc1 argument
Flaming Fighter yeah my apologies if it came off as I was confused I wasn't confused but I disagree with his argument
Im sorry, did you just say DMC2 is better than 1? Because if so I may have to smack a bitch.
"Oh no, not Brave Fencer Musashi!" - I was literally thinking that when you brought it up, lol.

"Ha Golden eye is easy if you wanna show a shooter that REALLY aged poorly..." Jet Force Gemini pops up "Well there it is".
For real though I still have my N64 copy of Jet Force Gemini and I don't what it is that makes me go back to it and everyone time I do, those controls man.
Also that later half where you have find parts for some space ship? I 10 year old me couldn't it. Too stupid i guess.
Good video Austin.
I've long adjusted to some control schemes that they feel as fresh now as when I first played them; Perfect Dark (which is just Goldeneye but better) still feels fine to me, though that's largely due to the game's incredibly aggressive auto-aim...
Devil May Cry 1 is way better on harder difficulties tbh
Terricule Holy shit I didn’t even notice that. Austin, the fuck you doing?
I think DMC 2 aged way better than DMC 1,
in DMC1 the clunky controls and few combos dont really allow you to do a whole lot however . . .
DMC 2 was just as garbage as the day it came out.
OuterRing How did DMC 2 age better than 1 if the second one was terrible from its release while as DMC 1 was considered good then (and to me still is today)?

Tbf most of the N64 library hasn't aged well due to that fecking awful controller
Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
But does that make those games bad in that way.
I differ. while it's true that it's not an intuitive controller comapred to the ones of now it did permit the games that worked on it to be neat.
I think that's the case for all early 3D games, but the N64 has some of the ones that have aged best from that time because at least it had analogue stick, even when it was a very bad one (btw, I don't claim that form most of the N64 library, just for few ones, mostly from Rare and Nintendo).
assholemon It makes revisiting them bad, not saying theyre bad games. Like the PS1 Dualshock, for example, never hindered games because of how the controller is.
N64 controller is the worst controller I have ever seen, playing games isn't supposed to give you blisters.
Faraae Exactly! Lmao

Jet Force Gemini needs a full remake.
It's was cool on N64, but really aged badly.
Yep Banjo DKR jetforce remakes plzzz

Every single NES rpg.
Shenmue.
Sonic Adventure.
Castlevania II Simon's Quest.

The Legend of Zelda.
Resident Evil.
Just my opinions.
Your opinions suck because games do not age. You're just dumb to enjoy an old game
Never played ecco as a kid, but played it a couple years ago and multiple times again recently, and it's still great. The game is jank, but I really think its difficulty is overstated - it's not too hard to do combat or navigation once you get used to it.
Also dolphins :)
You know, while you were talking about the Afro Samurai, I suddenly felt like playing Furi again.
And then you mentioned that they both had the same art director. And it all makes sense, even during my first playthrough I recall the game (especially one specific boss) reminding me of "that Afro Samurai manga that came out a few years ago that I never actually read".
Really neat to know!
Man... seems like someone's forgotten how to have fun. Yeah, some modern conventions have made some of these older games feel slow or wonky but nostalgia isn't the only thing allowing these games to still be fun. Seriously, Ecco the Dolphin for instance is a fantastic emotional experience. The old sounds and sheer emptiness of it make it seem so much more creepy. Even if they were to remake the game, clean everything up, and modernize it, there's a chance that all the charm would get lost.
Definitely, I often see people say mario 64 is just impossible to control after playing odyssey. Like of course if you play the new mario game then go back to one from over 20 years ago it's gonna feel weird for a bit. That doesn't make it bad, just different.
To me I feel like for a game to have aged badly, that means it doesn't have enough substance to be enjoyed for very long. The controls or programming or whatever are identical to how they were back in the day, if you could put up with them back then you can put up with them now. Games like OOT are absolutely braindead boring to me now because it feels like it was designed entirely around the player not knowing what 3D space was. Cool at the time but it makes the whole game trivial nowadays. Everything is technically solid about the game, but the puzzles in the final dungeon being as complex as *push block with the sun on it into the sun* isn't fun 20 years later.
I remember asking my brother For Afro Samurai for Christmas, as a sort of attempt to find a connection with him since he loved the Anime, and well... We didn't get past the first level, I think I ended up selling it the next year.
I would argue Ecco was fun. I beat it a year ago. Its biggest issue is how convoluted it was. Would love to see a modern take. But when does Sega make a good game?
Well, they own Atlus and make the Yakuza games but they seem to mainly want people to remember they make Sonic.
They made a bunch during the Dreamcast era (that weren't Sonic games)
In 1993. Since then, not so much. They own companies that still make good games. Sega themselves do not make good games any longer though. Altus makes good games. Sega doesn't "make" games that they produce for other developers, so saying Sega makes good games because Atlus is simply wrong.
Even if we don't count Atlus, Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles are made by Sega and they are good games.
leadbones Since 1993? You don’t know Sega at all do you? The Saturn had some bonafide classics and the Dreamcast was Sega firing on all cylinders. The Dreamcast didn’t die because of it’s library.
Jet Force Gemini is like any games from the SNES / N64 and into the GCN era. It wasn't just about taking CoD or Half Life and modding it into a new game - new controls, physics & mechanics were implemented to make the whole experience new (better or for worse).
If you play Jet Force like a run & gun shooter in the strictest sense - it feels bad. But that's because the game actually incorporates a tactical approach to the gun play with more primary focus on platforming not shooting.
Ideally you actually use the Pistol 95% of the time switching to other weapons only for very specific reasons that are often quickly resolved and back to pistol you go. You don't mash Pistol either. If you wait 1 and a half seconds between shots the default shot hits the enemies head automatically unless they're running away at the time.
Machine Gun os used to clear out swarms of fliers and if you feel lazy fighting small shield enemies.
Big shield enemies can eat your Tri-Rockets.
You'll also find that the game spoon feeds you enemy relevant ammo the room before an encounter. Ammo that respawns for a refresh once you clear the new room. Also, in the rooms with the Elite flying swarms (the ones with deadly accuracy, massive damage and advanced flying formations) ALWAYS have a limited invincibility item in the room which should last more than long enough to stand their and wipe them out with the Machine Gun.
Boss fights are isolated to a rail shooter type side dodge & shoot system allowing you to focus on aiming & timing.
I just finished a play through of it recently on N64 and I actually feel it has held up for what it is. Now that being said, that kind of frankenstein shooter/platforming as a Genre holding up is something else entirely. I personally though that genre maxed out and left the building long before Ratchet & Clank or Jak & Dexter came out.
Oh boy. That's a hairdo
Okay say what you want about the original DMC's gameplay, camera, and "plot," but for me personally, it managed to scratch a particular itch that no other game in the series has been able to since. I just really love the game's aesthetic and overall sense of atmosphere. All the little things you can look at that have flavor text added a lot, and the castle was a really cool interesting location that was surprisingly well fleshed out. None of the other games gave me that same sense of wonder about the world I was moving around. The rest of the series doubled down on the dumb fun action spectacle aspect, and really improved the gameplay, but they never did scratch that same itch the first game did for me. My favorite parts of the original weren't combat encounters, they were just wandering around exploring the castle and island and finding new things to look at.
Banjo-Kazooie is my favorite game ever made, I 100% it every few months or so. So when you said Banjo-Kazooie I was about to go off on dat ass. XD
The Mama Milk screen saver lol made my day, also good video man.
I'll have to disagree with you on Musashi, I think it's aged quite a bit better than a lot of action RPGs.
Also, that timed mission was a nightmare even at the time. Also, the sequel isn't a bad game at all. It doesn't capture the magic of the original, but it's still solid
yeah musashi stills offers A LOT even compared to games nowadays, musashi 2 though just barely a subpar game and didn't even held up against its predecessor. if you compare it side to side, musashi 2 feels have extremely lazy design or maybe very little budget compared to the first. most element in 1 is gone in 2 and it became only a hack and slash genre title.
I played all the DMC games recently and as a game I thought 1 held up the best due to its atmospheric design that it retained from its days as a Resi title.
Quality Keijo!!!!!!!! reference, there. 10/10
DMC 1 makes me think of that one time my dad tripped over my whole ass television and broke the back off the crt box, my television was naked for years after that
Doujinshis are self-published works of art being mainly manga but can apply to any media. Saying "indie doujin" is like saying "indie indie" which sounds stupid, just a heads up. Other than that, great video.
Loved that Afro Samurai knowledge. Fantastic video!
Kingdom Hearts 1 also hasn't aged too well. It's still good, but magic was hardly needed outside of Cure, Aero, and the occasional thunder. Platforming was super stiff and jumps were were barely accomplishable. Cutscenes were unskippable. The constant mashing of the X button didn't lend itself well to giving us more variety in our combos, and that wouldn't be fixed until KH 2. Also, Summons were absolute trash, with the only good one being Tinkerbell.
Ifrit101 Brett The final mix version is better. Also blizzard is good as a shotgun/combo finisher and fire is great for far away or flying enemies.
Ifrit101 Brett summons are also good crowd control (simba and genie) but their unskippable summon animations take way too long.
OMG THE JUMPING AND THE HORRIBLE CAMERA ANGLES DRIVE ME NUTS! Hahaha but yeah .I wished they fixed that when they repackaged the game.
At least the O.G. Kingdom Hearts was primarily exploration and combat as opposed to 90% chessy cutscenes sandwiching a few minutes of straightforward gameplay in KH2 and 3.
While i agree that the summons were trash and that the jumps were hard at the beggining, i actually really like the platforming. Was it stiff? Sure it was before you unlock the super jump but that pushed me to actually explore and lose myself into the game... Unlike KH2. Ok first off, i love KH2 to death but while i think it's a step forward compared to the original when it comes to gameplay, i also feel it lost things that made the original immersive : the pleasure of exploring the different worlds is pretty much gone and while both the gameplay and the mini games are fun as hell, the different worlds feel quite the same gameplay wise (with the exception of a couple). The first KH had a lot of little elements that weren't really useful in the main adventure but made the worlds feel more alive. I also hate the fact that you have to level-up the fusions to unlock some special abilities : i feel exploring in KH2 was already pretty dull but they made it even worse by forcing to grind for them. Thankfully, KH3 was a massive improvement over KH2 on that point and is (for me) by far the most fun KH to explore.
I can't believe there are parents who didn't let their kids get T or M rated games, I thought that was only on TV or something. My first game as a child was Doom, I was 5 years old, it was right when it came out and my dad got it for his computer nad used to let me play.
It's hard to take anything you said about DMC1 seriously when based on your gameplay footage you didn't seem to even realize there was more than one attack string
Unfortunately changing up your combos with the wait timed presses doesn't change the outcome of most combat.
Austin Eruption You can't be serious? As a veteran of the series I can tell you that you're dead wrong. It absolutely does make a difference, especially in boss battles. Go watch some pro play vids or something. This is not subjective or opinion. This is 100% pure FACT. Changing attack strings and changing between weapons such as Ifrit DT and Sparda factually does more DPS/Burst Damage than mashing the same button over and over. This is especially true in higher difficulties.
I think you misunderstood what I said.
I said that when you're casually playing the game on a normal difficulty, there's no need for me to change up my combo strings while getting footage because it literally doesn't change the outcome of what I was doing.
@@prophetmaycry3079 You DMC fanboys are a special breed of stupid. Ninja Gaiden shits all over Devil May Overrated anyway.
Haven't watched anything from you in a while, but this was nice.
Btw, why the Mega Milk wallpaper? 😏
Is footage of you playing DMC some sort of out of season april joke?
Beside go sode off with you "Character actions".
I KNEW you were going to say Jet force Gemini the moment you brought up Rare Replay. DAMN XD THE BURN. Jet Force Gemini is my favorite game from Rare
badly aged games? basically, every 3d game from playstation era
Wrong. People back then knew the graphics were polygonized but they didn't have another choice. Now we have better graphics. So no. No PS1 game has aged poorly at all.
So right after he talked about Echo I got an ad for water-proof speakers. The ads, they are watching!
love your pc wallpaper....
video just started, mega man legends music in the background. 10/10 video keep up the good work
As someone who has been a furry for around 6 years, never in my life have I ever heard the term "phin" used to refer to aquatic fursonas. It sounds so silly lmao
Lol fursona sounds silly
I mean, I'm not into furry life, but I don't knock it. Seems fun for the right time. But fursona seems like you're just trying too hard to create your own words.
@ya boi slump lol nah. too weird. I don't see the appeal. Doesn't get me aroused.
But say I were high, she was high, and she wanted to try it out...it'd be a weird story, and that in itself is a little fun. Creating stories.
But if she was REALLY into it, wanting it to be a regulkar thing...I'd either keep her as a part-time fuck buddy, if she agreed to not force the "furry" thing. Or just drop her all together.
It's just not my thing.
But....Fusona seems like somthing only people trying too hard to make a weird thing accepted would say
@@agonleed3841
It's a term that combines the words "persona" and "furry/fur" together and gets the idea of what someone is talking about pretty quick and concise. People make up far dumber sounding words all the time, I dunno.
Good stuff Austin! Very constructive and good reasoning for the games you chose.
Thanks Nico!
17:38 This statement is untrue. The best examples of collectathon platformers do not waste your time, and utilise all the unique gameplay mechanics on offer to give the playable character fun and interesting abilities to use in tandem with the non-linear level design. You don't need every single item to progress, just a set amount, and it's up to you how you do so or whether or not you need to even go into a level when you have enough to move on to the next hubworld. Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario 64 (mostly), Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Jak & Daxter, Spyro 1, 2 & 3 and even Super Mario Odyssey get this oh so right, and are prime examples of timeless collectathon platformers that can still be enjoyed to this day.
You yourself just might not be a fan of 3D platformers in general unless they're linear one-and-done deals, which is fine, but don't throw every game in this genre under the bus just because you're not qualified nor interested to talk about. And before anyone even says this, no. It's not an outdated genre. Genres literally cannot be outdated by definition. Judge these games by their own merits, and if you think they're outdated, give me reasons WHY they're outdated, or WHY they're not as fun as later games in the genre. I don't care for hyperbole, I don't care for nitpicking a small section of a game, I need examples, I need to know how the product is overall. If you want to make bold claims with nothing to back it up, I'm not interested, your argument is invalid. You're not entitled to an ignorant opinion, you're entitled to an informed one.
Well. I did say "I feel" meaning that's my opinion. I've played every video game you listed too
S'all subjective dude.
Genres can die though. When was the last time you saw a text adventure? My last time was when Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 had Zork in it for some reason.
Hooded Man Text-based games are a dime a dozen, even if you can't find them on the AAA market. You can look up many of the countless games made on Twine or other free browser-based text adventures. It's not hard to find. But besides that, this isn't a conversation about dead genres (which is never permanent by the way, which has been proven time and time again and will continue to be the case for as long as this industry is alive), but rather about how the majority of arguments that a game is "outdated" are poorly explained and the people making these arguments aren't taking into consideration various aspects, such as the criteria by which we determine a game is outdated, whether or not it is still enjoyable to play in spite of that, and whether the person who dislikes this game has reasons partaining to a genre he is invested in or doesn't even enjoy the genre to begin with and isn't qualified to fairly judge the game's quality.
"You yourself just might not be a fan of 3D platformers in general unless they're linear one-and-done deals"
wow now i stumbled on this, i think the list is suddenly makes sense to me. even in the olden days musashi is in the 'hard' category on 3d platformers rpgs, which probably why it makes into the list now.
"As far as I knew, I was 10" is my favorite take on Jet Force Gemini.
If you ain't talkin Squaresoft, then your talkin don't matta
This is the fist video of yours I've watched and I just want to point out that you look like a young Greg Proops and sound like Arlo. These are comforting elements.
"Absolutely baffling story"
Goes to spooky castle and kills demons. The end. Ow my brain too much plot.
"Chance based encounters"
There is indeed a chance that you are a scub.
Whoa dude, the second musashi played pretty good. The music was pretty solid as well.
It would definitely be worth looking past your nostalgia byist and give it a real try
you forgot dragon age origins
Surely you jest? It’s barely even been a decade since that game came out.
The Onyx Viper yeah I jest. It’s still pretty great. If anything it’s just ugly 0.o
HOW DARE YOU
ALSO THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD WORK
THANK YOU SIR YOU ARE THE BEST
Don't all Bioware games have bad gameplay?
Many people here are talking about DMC1, but my heartstrings are pulled by the Brave Fencer Musashi section.
how is saying DmC is more fun to play than dmc1 heresy? DmC dante is similar to DMC4 Nero. He is just a streamlined vers of dante without styles. Not to say he lacks style. sure he is no Dante from the OG dmc but DmC dante has more style at one time(in combat) than DMC3 dante does on ps2. PC is a different story though because you can mod style switching.
subscribing because you gave me the forbidden knowledge of there being a Jet Force Gemini 'remake' (now if only they did an actual Remake to update it a bit bc that game was my bread butter and jam as a kid)
