Have you heard about the military hotels of Bangalore? There are around 2000 of them in the city. These hotels are thronged by people due to their simple and traditional food. We got a chance to explore two of the famous military hotels of Bangalore. Ranganna Military Hotel and Shivaji Military Hotel. Food was good in both restaurants.

During British period those who were inducted to army who were not heavy meat eaters and do not cook non veg at homes were encouraged to take up non vegetarian food for good physique needed for the army. Hence the military Hotels came into prevalence.

Yes..non veg food was referred as "military sappadu" in nanjinadu region till about 50 yrs or so back
I think the name was a way to differentiate between eateries serving vegetarian and non vegetarian food. During the colonial period, most eateries were run by Brahmins and served vegetarian food.

@@FoodNTravel if you are still around Bangalore, should check out ragi mudde with mutton at ranganna military or one of those type places. Hard to eat, but authentic local speciality. Please ask them how to eat if you haven't already

I think in Karnataka, non vegetarian hotels are commonly called military hotels. Some of the hotels names are followed by Hindu military hotels and there you will not get beef.

Military hotels especially those in Bangalore are famous mutton dishes. Nowhere you get beef. Atleast I have never see any where around Bangalore.

There are a lot of Military hotels in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka states. Almost all of them are labeled as "Hindu Military hotels". That is an indication that the hotel is not run by either Muslims or Christians. "Military Hotel" simply means non-vegetarian hotel, nothing else. It was a surprise to me too when I first went (1969) to the then Madras (Chennai) on my way to Andamans in connection with my first job. First I thought that these hotels were run for defense forces. Later I came to know the reality.

Originally mostly they are marathis, old maratha empire army cooks. Atleast that's what i heard in bangalore. Marathas and people who paid tribute to them like nayiks of Tamil Nadu brought marathi cuisine to Tamil Nadu as well.
