    Quail grow wild here in Reno, Nevada, and I always feel blessed when the families roam through my backyard for food and protection. I would love to raise them but we are in an hoa unfortunately. Times are changing though and their importance among laying chickens is so upgraded now that I pray I can have some raised, along with chicken egg layers! ❤ you are blessed not having to deal with that on your gorgeous property!

    Good evening guys! A couple of things I have learned with quail, I like to put marbles in the water to keep the chicks out of it, that way they don't get wet either. The other one is give them grit, or sand ASAP after hatching. These two things really improved my survival rates. Coturnix are the easiest and most hardy of the quails to raise. Have a great day!!! Thank you for the content that you make!

    Just curious why this breed of quail was chosen versus say Bobwhite quail? Love your videos. I just finished building ten 4x8 ft raised beds for our garden next Spring here in Indiana. This will triple the size of what we planted this year. We were very pleased with what our little garden space did this year so we decided to expand. The new beds aren't exactly what we wanted, but with the pandemic, materials were hard to come by here so I bought some cedar kits online. They were easy to assemble. The biggest challenge was trying to get them something close to level since our lot has a lot of slope to it. Now to build the soil in them for next year's growing season. God bless y'all!

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  3 роки тому

      These were chosen for the size. They make lots of meat. Larger than Bobwhite.

    It may be a long shot that anyone sees this but I just had my first hatch of quail today. Everything is going well. However I just noticed one little one is running around with its egg still attached to its bottom and there is a pea sized red lump on its bottom. From some quick research it may be a prolapsed vent… any suggestions on how to help this little one?

    Amazing how fast they grow. How long from hatch to harvest? Just trying to figure
    out how many could be raised without going through the Winter in the North.
    Minimum temperature that would be reasonable.

      They only take about 6 weeks to harvest. They tolerate the winter months very well including temps in the teens as long as they can get out of the wind. They struggle with the summer heat. The best time to incubate eggs is April

      Yes, about 6 to 8 weeks. Though you can harvest them anytime. They aren't like chickens where the older they get the tougher they get. It's the same for layers. about 6 to 8 weeks. They also deal with cold a lot better then chickens too. As long as you provide them a small shelter to get out the wind, they do great. I saw a video where someone had quail and it was 3 degrees outside. They did just fine , as long as you keep up with feed and water.

      I have had quail for 2 years. I have not killed 1. Even tho too many males hatch I manage them so that we are all happy. They make cool little sounds, their manure is useful. Their lifespan is short. So I let them live their happy little lives the best I can offer them. I learn a lot about their nature this way. I do not keep them in cages but either in a little house with 2 storeys and stairs that I have designed and built, or on the floor in my glass veranda. In summer I plan to keep them in little chicken tractors during the day. People feed wild birds. I decided to let my male quail live and I take care of them as my bird pets. Some have gorgeous colours eg the whole bird is raven black, dark navy blue or dark chocolate. And each male has its unique voice and character. Much fun for me.

    I've tried hatching quail, but the death rate was terrible. I've got a brooder with heat at 95-100 first week, water, feed is a 28% protein turkey starter that I crush to make smaller. By end of first week over 50% dead, by week three 90%. The last hatch I used 28% protein medicated, that I also crushed to make smaller but death rate is still terrible.

    • @Spark_Iskra_z_Polski
      @Spark_Iskra_z_Polski 8 місяців тому

      They need a heat lamp. It is really uncommon formy baby quail to die unless they are overheated and then trample on each other and then the weaker ones will not survive. I have no access to high protein feed, and they usu get 21%, but it seems OK. I add my own high protein mix after week 1, and booked eggs a few times. All the best from Poland!
