Thanks to Suzanne below for enlightening w/ the song name we mentioned in 5:53 is: Everybody’s Talkin’ by Harry Nilsson! Then we remembered we know it from Midnight Cowboy - how to forget! :)
First have to say Niel Young is Godfather of Grundge. Grunge songs feature sludgy guitar riffs with plenty of effects pedals, melancholy lyrics, and an ambient, reverberated sound, along with plenty of unusual techniques such as alternating time signatures, diminished and unusual chords, dissonance, and very, very powerful vocals. Niel was doing this in the late 60's. His influence wouldn't start the Grundge movement until the late 80's centered around Seattle. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden are some first big hitters in the movement. All influenced by Niel. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder gave Niel the moniker Godfather of Grundge at MTV music awards in '93 backing Rockin' in a Free World album. A great story withore to read into. Check it out sometime, worth digging into Niel. You will see influences he has on many bands today and back in the day.
I would not consider Niel folk rock. He's more close to hard rock/country. I read an interview regarding his Harvest album. He was asked what style or genre was it written, composed, and produced. He simply replied "hard country". I've never heard that used before. And only thing I can say is he referring to outlaw country or alternative country? I can see him being mixed in with the Man in Black, or Mighty Merle. Man this would be a great collaboration think Chris Stapleton and Neil Young. Or even just co-writer a genius masterpiece.
Neil may be a legend in Canada but in the US Neil is a God.. My all time favorite artist. I play his songs , even built my own 1959 Fender tweed deluxe clone tube amplifier.
@Doug Sawyer Dude. I built my own 1959 Fender Tweed deluxe clone tube amplifier so I can Grung out to Rocking in the Free world. Some one once quoted Neil's guitar tone is like a jet engine in a hurricane.
Neil writes music about and from the country - the farms and the land. It's not country music - it's music about the country - it may refer to things that went down in LA but his time spent in Manitoba, rural Ontario and on his ranch in California is what this music sounds like to me.
Definitely my favorite Neil Young song. I saw him three times. Even took my mom to see him once. She was a very cool lady. You guys would like his live stuff. Sugar Mountain, I am a child, After the gold rush, Powder finger. So many great songs.
.. This album called 'Rust Never Sleeps' has one side acoustic & one side full on Rock. It's what defines Young from other 70s 'singer-songwriters' .. dude, could Rock Out w/ the best of them & write acoustic, introspective tunes about the history of America that will melt your souls. #masters
Ambulance Blues, Albuquerque, Revolution Blues, Powderfinger, Southern Man, After the Goldrush, Down By the River, Cortez the Killer, Like A Hurricane, Words, Broken Arrow, Expecting To Fly (both w/ Buffalo Springfield), Round & Round.....
Try down by the river, everbody knows this is no where, cowgirl in the sand, cinamin girl, after the goldrush, tell me why, southern man, ohio, pocahontas, powderfinger, cortez the killer, like a hurricane, long may you run, helpless, sail away, old laughing lady unplugged,mr soul unplugged, the needle and the damage done, look out for my love, going back, out on the weekend, harvest, harvest moon, drive back, sugar mountain and about a hundred more.Best artist ever
This is a song written about his bandmates Crosby Stills and Nash and his time with them. Their immense success lead to massive drug use and softened them a bit, made them a bit lazy....(note the cocaine references about crystal canyons and blades). Neil still had a ways to go and didn't want to be dragged down. Basically a story about him leaving CSN.
He was never a part of CSN. When he played alongside them they were Crosby Stills Nash & Young. So he was kind of an occasional bandmate, who never left his solo career that he started after Buffalo Springfield where he was a band mate with not only Stephen Stills but also Rick James. (I'm totally serious there look it up.)
Jeez you's guys :P Dylan was such a big deal in the sixties. And in his later years he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature, for his brilliant career of songs. Also he wrote memoirs but mostly it's his SONGS. Oh so glad you loved this NEIL song!!!! His earliest band Buffalo Springfield hat hits in 60s. Then he was in Crosby Stills Nash and Young which had HUGE hits you will Recognize
The Neil Young catalog is DEEP, in every sense - keep going, you'll never regret it! Also, the Joni - Neil connection is STRONG. Love your videos :) new subscriber.
I've been a Neil Young fan since he was in Buffalo Springfield. It blows my mind that ppl haven't listened to his music. I like his acoustic stuff but his rockers on electric guitar are my faves. He may not be a very technical guitarist but man he plays with so much feeling on the electric guitar.

@Doug Sawyer Good call. Unfortunately Nobody wants to look at that stuff. That's why "Old Man" was my choice. I definitely would rather Electrified Neil myself.
back in the 70's....Rust Never Sleeps-concert was my introduction to any Live Concert....to have a copy of that event was a treasure for music lovers then......and even NOW..for me...listening to it.....relives and revives my youth! Neil Young is legendary guys! you got the right stuff to listen to!...we are fortunate that we still have him alive!
Some other really good songs by him not yet mentioned: * Cortez the Killer * Powderfinger * The theme song from Dead Man soundtrack - probably his best electric work ever. Instrumental, but still awesome.
Never too late really. Neil is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time. He's good at country, rock, folk, blues, grunge and experimental music.
A wonderful Neil Young song is " Country Girl " It's on a Seminal Album by Crosby Stills Nash & Young Deja Vu The vocal harmonies of CSNY are on full display in the title song " Deja Vu ". David Crosby and Graham Nash provide back up vocals during a Live Performance of David Gilmour " On An Island ". Memorable and Beautiful.
Country Girl is one of the greatest songs of all time!!! Definitely my favorite CSNY song and it's also in my list of top 3 fav Neil Young songs. If the woman in this video loves the harmonica she'll *love* the last section of Country Girl.
What, you've never heard of Neil Young - the legendary Neil Young, our Toronto Boy - (ok just north of Toronto) , member of CSNY, Buffalo Springfield etc. - No matter, discover - it's a great journey. Greetings from Toronto - did I mention Neil's hometown - it's always electric when he plays here.
You should listen to the song "After the Goldrush". He recorded it 9 years earlier with a lot less baggage from his whirlwind career. 15 years after this album (Rust Never Sleep) he wrote a tribute to Kurt Cobain called "Change Your Mind" and live versions are brutal. Kurt quoted Neil in his 'suicide note'.
I've had a fascination with this song since I bought the cassette in HS. I agree it's referring to parting ways with CSN. I find the lyrics very poetic and moving even if I can't make sense of every line. Strike out on your own, keep producing. Ultimately it all will be grinded up and consumed by others, but you know you did what you could. Lots of connection between Neil and Dylan who admire each other. Grew up a few hundred miles away on opposites sides of the border.
Heart of Gold, Harvest Moon, Cowgirl in the Sand, Powderfinger, Old Man, Hey Hey My My, Cinnamon Girl, Ohio, Down by the River, blah blah blah. Recommendations could go on and on. Hard to find a bad one. Dive in and enjoy!
Many like Neil Young's electric guitar work--which is quite unique and recognizable. He was my favorite artist for many years growing up, being in middle and high school from the early to mid-1970s. As a guitarist myself for many decades I can say that his true "forte" as a artist is first his songwriting (lyrics especially, using a lot of symbolism) and then his acoustic (steel string) guitar work. You get both of those pieces of him in this song.
Thank you for your reaction to this Canadian legend. Whenever you get to hear his music opt for the live version every chance you get! Heart of Gold, Old Man, Hey Hey My My, After The Goldrush, Harvest Moon, The Needle and The Damage Done, Southern Man, and definitely look for Helpless from Farm Aid 1985! Enjoy!
Bet you were surprised! Half acoustic half rock. This album is a masterpiece! Neil Young is one of the great song writers of our time. Right up there with Bo Dylan and the Beatles. His songs can rile you up and break your heart! Please more Neil!!!! From same album. Hey hey My my(into the black) side 2 rock version. Tonight’s the Night. Nice to see you discovered Neil Young. Great first reaction. He has so many great songs. To get a real feel for his spirit check out "Pocahontas". Also check out the group Buffalo Springfield the he was a part of in the 60's.
This Song was used to Dramatic Effect on Dennis Hopper's Canadian Produced Masterpiece OUT OF THE BLUE - an examination of the Punk Aesthetic taken to its Logical Conclusion ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
As a guitar player, I recommend listening to Neil Young's. "Cowgirl In The Sand". Shows some of his early electric guitar sounds, kind of quirky, but you get an idea of the "grundge" sound.
You have got to watch Neil’s live version of “All along the Watchtower “….it is epic. He became the 4th member with Crosby, Stills & Nash. He has written some iconic songs. He had a part to play with the Farm Aid concerts. He is our Canadian Dylan.
There's this very clear divide of what music sounded like and its lyrical component before Bob Dylan and what music was like after Bob Dylan he changed the game, The lyric structure and rhyming patterns are very bob Dylanesque and it sounds like Dylans 1965 song "love Minus Zero/No Limit". Neil young is a very talented singer songwriter in his own right in the folk rock arena
Wow, been watching your channel for a while now but I never realized you had done a Neil Young song! I’m a huge fan and I would love to see you guys do some more of his songs, there are tons of great ones I could suggest but you might as well start with some of the most famous ones like “Old Man” for his folk side or “Cinnamon Girl” to hear how he can rock!
You really really need to listen to more Neil Young. Some of his songs you should do on your show are, Powderfinger, Old Man, Heart of Gold, Like A Hurricane, Ambulance Blues and Ohio. Ohio is the most important song ever written, it's about the Kent State Massacre in Ohio in 1970. Neil will accompany you to an entirely different reality. He wrote Powderfinger for Lynyrd Skynrd to record, but they were killed in a plane crash before they got a chance to record it.
The lines about knowing he'd had enough, burned his credit card, and 'headed out to where the pavement turns to sand' is about how he felt with C,S,N,Y's "Deja Vu" and his own "Harvest", he was right in the middle of the mainstream, which is what can kill the ambition, drive and edge of so many artists; thinking they've made it and can start to coast. As he said, when you're at the point, you can either stay in the middle of the road, or head for the ditch. So he went for the ditch (he even called one of his next and edgiest albums "On the Beach", speaking of 'turns to sand'). He said it's a rougher ride, but you meet more interesting people. That's Neil, in a very real nutshell.
Well that was a blast from the past. We would play this LP over and over at my girl friends house. Everyone would hang out in the basement playing darts and sneaking beer at her dads bar and having a good time This whole album is epic. Thrasher is such a great song you would not usually hear as a reaction so kudos to yous. Powderfinger is my favorite off the LP. My My, Hey hey(out of the blue) is Acoustic and Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) Is Electric Both are a MUST. Enjoy 💗🤘.
Yea Neil is a true original - from thundering electric to this. late 1960's to now. it'd take an encyclopedia to list the gems. 'hurricane' - electric.' Pocahontas' - acoustic
Believe it or not, a reaction of yours that I haven't seen. Neil Young is a master songwriter and storyteller. Many months later, maybe you could do more Neil. Maybe "Cortez the Killer."
NEIL YOUNG & AND CRAZY HORSE, "THRASHER"... HE IS IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME TEAMED UP WITH CROSBY, STILLS, AND NASH... AND ENTERED THE HALL WITH THEM ALSO. MORE... "DOWN BY THE RIVER", "HEART OF GOLD", "OLD MAN", "NEEDLE AND THE DAMAGE DONE".. "CINNAMON GIRL"...
Try Helpless. It's Neil Young and The Band,1976,The Last Waltz concert, you won't be disappointed. My compliments, you are a lovely couple. From Italy, ciao!!
Neil's folky acoustic stuff is great and I feel if you're just starting with Neil you have to listen to ALL of Harvest. It's simply an incredible album; brings tears to my eyes. Rust never sleeps is great but Live Rust ('79) is phenomenal. Like a Hurricane being a standout track - this track moves you and sticks to your soul. Fast fwd a decade to Ragged Glory - Over and Over is a juggernaut, the guitar tone and solos are mind blowing on that song man!!!
This is not the song I would have used to introduce you to Neal Young. You should recognize the he was part of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Start with Our House and then Cathedral. Then try Down by the River and Cinnamon Girl with Crazy Horse. Then listen to Neil Young’s Harvest album. the title track is very good. Heart of Gold was popular, but my favorites from that album are the last two tracks-The needle and the Damage Done and Words. Lastly, you should listen to Alabama, which inspired Leonard Skynard’s rebuttal, Sweet Home Alabama. You might call this music simple-it is generally in 4/4 or 3/4 time with simple chord progressions. But it is emotionally supercharged. That does not come from simple times. Rather, it comes from turbulent times-the Vietnam war, Nixon Administration, etc. Keep on listening. I enjoy watching your reactions.
There is no "studio" version; Neil debuted the song on stage during that tour. If you want to hear the harsher, electric side of Neil Young, listen to "Powderfinger," "Like a Hurricane," or "Rockin' in the Free World."
HEYYYYYY, NIIIIICCCCEEEE GUYS! :) SO NEIL IS A GUY WHO WROTE MANY 8-10 MINUTE SONGS AND MANY MANY 2-3 MINUTE SONGS AND SO MANY DUIFFERENT STYLES, FULL TILT ROCK, COUNTRY, BALLAD, ACOUSTIC ONLY, ABSOLUTE GENIUS WHO WRITES, SINGS, PLAYS GUITAR, HARMONICA AND LOVED LISTENING TO ELTON JOHN ON PIANO AND BOARDS AND SO HE WOUND UP PLAYING PIANO TOO! JUST SO MANYYYYYY GR888888 SONGS YOU CAN DO AND I'M BETTING YOU'VE HEARD HIS BIGGEST HIT OFF OF HIS 72 MULTI PLATINUM ALBUM ( HARVEST ) HEART OF GOLD :) ANYGOOD BE GOOD GUYS AND HAVE GOOD FUN!
That song this one reminds you of is Harry Nilssons ''I said goodbye to me" ('Everybody's talkin at me') Also, Neil Youngs Zuma and On the Beach albums are totally underrated releases of his with soft ballads and heavy rock mixes.
I never herd this before-Today is Neil's 78th Birthday Brian Birch-Neil has written allot of great songs.-I mean-a REAL LOT-Please check em out !!!!! Brian Birch
So many great tracks by Neil Young---some you'll enjoy---"Sugar Mountain" "The Loner" "When You Dance" "Harvest" , and "War of Man" for some good choices!!
I enjoyed your commentary on Neil Young's 'Thrasher', a beautiful song! There is definitely 1 song that you have never heard of. I'd love to hear your reaction to a song I wrote in 1979 and recently transcribed and recorded. The song is called 'Desire to Reifnitz' by John Rudek from the album 'A Search for Love'. Thanx!
SO THEY HAVE THESE 71 BBC CONCERTS WHICH ARE ABOUT 30-40 MINUTE SHOWS, ELTON JOHN, NEIL YOUNG, CARPENTERS, JAMES TAYLOR, JONI MITCHELL AND OTHERS BUT REMEMBER THEY'RE 50 YEARS AGO SO! LOL :) IT'S INSANELY GOOD TIMELESS MUSIC SO I'D SAY TO DO FOR STARTERS ( OLD MAN AND HEART OF GOLD OFF THE BBC SHOW! :)
There's a back story to this song. It's largely about how he felt about Crosby, Stills & Nash at the time. He was saying they blew it with all the promise to be huge, making great albums together for years, sometimes with Young. He saw them as becoming lazy, spoiled rock stars who believed too much of the hype. That and tons of drugs; esp. Crosby. As I call them, Groggy, Pills & Hash.
Thanks to Suzanne below for enlightening w/ the song name we mentioned in 5:53 is: Everybody’s Talkin’ by Harry Nilsson! Then we remembered we know it from Midnight Cowboy - how to forget! :)
Definitely listen to his “Harvest Moon” and “Heart of Gold”! MANY others! 😎🎶❤️

Neil with an acoustic guitar will melt your hart, and when he straps on the electric guitar he will melt your brain!!!

@@greybeard2280 I’d say he bridged the gap between a whole host of genres, with folk-rock certainly being one of them
Nailed it.
Out of hundreds, Neil has been top three for 50 years.

The Needle and the Damage Done is amazing and emotional

We Were Born To Rock We'll Never Be Opera Stars .
Neil Young is AWESOME!
There is a part which sounds almost like a part in Ethon John's Candle In The Wind. Soooooo goood.
I've always been a big Neil Young fan. I'm not generally into country/folk style music, but I love the lyrics and the guitar in this. So awesome.
You must watch his live performance of 'Old Man', from 1970 I think.
You should try one of his electric guitar live songs - completely different sound. Maybe Like a Hurricane or Cortez the Killer.
Neil Young “Sleeps with Angels” a real fine album.
yes, it is 💜
Heart of Gold. Old Man.
when the pavement turns to sand- that's when the fun begins.
Live - Rust never sleeps
Now THAT’s wicked. 🎸🤟🏻
'You and me' from Harvest Moon will hit the spot. Sublime heart-melter.
Neil Young..."Like A Hurricane", more rock for you.

That song this one reminds you of is Harry Nilssons ''I said goodbye to me" ('Everybody's talkin at me')
Also, Neil Youngs Zuma and On the Beach albums are totally underrated releases of his with soft ballads and heavy rock mixes.
You definitely need to hear, the live 1991 version of Cortez The Killer. Amazing song , amazing performance.
I am a long time fan of Neil Young but am unfamiliar with this. Check out Old Man, Helpless, Southern Man, Harvest Moon, Heart of Gold more
I never herd this before-Today is Neil's 78th Birthday Brian Birch-Neil has written allot of great songs.-I mean-a REAL LOT-Please check em out !!!!! Brian Birch
"Thrasher" is another word for the big harvesting combines that harvest wheat or corn.
gotta listen to Harvest Moon too
So many great tracks by Neil Young---some you'll enjoy---"Sugar Mountain" "The Loner" "When You Dance" "Harvest" , and "War of Man" for some good choices!!
I’m so glad you loved it!!! I agree with Rick - definitely dig into his catalog, you won’t be disappointed ❤️❤️
Promise we will!
Peace of mind
Early in his career he was in bands that had musicians with folk roots.
And Mo Town, too.
Anything from Harvest album. So many. Later stuff he’s father of grunge. CSNY era as well. Canadian treasure.
PS Walk like a Giant is a 16 minute trip. Guitars sound like a brontosaurus thundering across the land. Saw this at George Mason U.
Great name
Guys it’s going to take many more samples of Neil Young to get close to the whole picture. This is one little facet.
I’ve been listening to Neil Young since I was in a crib. 42 years. And to this day I’m still discovering stuff from him I’ve never heard.
Surprised you didn't know Neil Young from Crosby , Stills, Nash, and Young. The lyrics to this song are a masterpiece.
If you want to cry together again like you did listening to Joni Mitchel's A Case of You, try Neil Young's The Bridge from the Time Fades Away album.
