Those are not opposites. You typically need both of those 2 ways to do the funny. Making small stakes (like getting laid) big. Or making big stakes (wife having a baby) small. Are both funny. Incompetence of the character is almost a given for all comedy. Or at least misplaced priorities of the character, like not wanting to miss the football game to drive your pregnant wife to the hospital.
Suddenly "I just want my rug" is put into so much perspective.
