I've never heard it so ineptly described. His 'rule' doesn't fit The Shining, Alien, The Exorcist, Pyscho, Jaws, Poltergeist, and on and on and on.

Yeah but they are. Ghosts are dead spirits trying to be human again, demons were angels exiled from heaven, people like Norman Bates are deranged enough to think they're normal. Alien is an iffy grey area because it wasn't the screenplay that made it great and it was a stated plot point in Jaws that the shark was an intruder in their beach community.

@@thereccher8746 "Wasn't the screenplay that made it great". Dude. Seriously? Are you being for real? The Alien script is AMAZING -- a masterclass in slow-burn horror. The tension builds from the moment they get that signal, to the facehugger, and on and on, it's really kind of relentless if you read it -- I love the movie but reading the script makes you realize just how frightening it was from very early on, yet everyone only talks about the xenomorph which ONLY comes into play past the midpoint.
It's a script that really does (almost effortlessly) get under your skin. Also, the way it's written (the Walter Hill draft I think?) is some of the most poetic writing I've ever seen in a screenplay. So simple, yet so very evocative. It's like haiku!
But beside the actual text, as much as I love the designs, it really DOES come down to the story. Alien was genuinely well-written (if you don't believe me, READ it!).
Not trying to be anal over this, I just really REALLY love that script. It's one of the greats FOR A REASON lol. Scriptslug has a copy of the draft I've read, IIRC.
Not the biggest fan of the dialogue, but it's still believable and relatably human.

I feel like this only applies to a certain kind of horror, the mob vs monster kind. Like Frankenstein or the invisible man (if we can call that a horror movie), but there's another kind that's more about the person vs the wickedness of the unknown. In which humans face something they do not understand that is in fact out to get them. They key is, I belive, that because of these situations humans will treat their peers as means and do horrible things to eachother (often sacrificing one another) in order to survive or just because the "wicked thing" made them go completely insane.

+TheOnly1Zalo Truby, like all "gurus" has some good insight, but ultimately, each story is its own unique entity. Not all horror stories are identical just like in any other genre.

The distinguishing factor of horror is this: it involves a victim trying to escape a monster. Whether that monster is a person gone crazy (The Shining), out of this world (Alien), or human, depends on the story.

Examples Frankenstein. Carrie. The Ring. Others...? Interesting insight though.

Didn't make much sense. Just sounded like he was trying to sound smart.
