In Pursuit of Hand-feeding the Red-breasted Nuthatch

- It's rare to see Red-breasted Nuthatches in south central Indiana, and rarer still to have one land beside me while I filled the sunflower-seed feeder! I quickly assumed this was another nudge, a "gift...from above" like the "Carolina Wrens Soothe Broken Heart," to help me recover from the devastating loss of my wonderful wife. Inspired also by the handiwork of Lesley the Bird Nerd (aka "the bird whisperer"), I decided to try. It appeared hopeless, as well as humorous, at first. But I discovered "the Pursuit IS Happiness," and persistence does pay off!
I smiled so much at 1:43. Awesome! :)
Thanks so much, Lesley, for your very kind comments! They made my day! I alluded to you as my inspiration in my description. Although my amateur attempts in no way compare to your stellar hand-feeding productions, it was still a breath-taking thrill of a lifetime for me! And I have you to thank for it. Don't think I would've tried if you hadn't made it look so easy. (Yes, I moved my hand within a few inches of that Downy in some footage that didn't make the cut. He didn't fly.)
Hi .. close to being neighbor. I just read and was sorry to hear, yet as always, when one door closes another one opens. God has his way. I'm so thankful for my eyesight to be able to see all the Beauty he has provided. We're very fortunate! Peace and blessings 🕊️
Wow! This is so incredible! Thank you for taking the time to share these videos with us. ☺️
You're welcome and thank you for taking time to watch and for the kind comments!
Very interesting bird feed Ron.....you are a very patient man.
With very cold pinkies. Lol. It took 1 1/2 hours total to get that 2 minutes of highlights. One segment was about 40 minutes continuous in 32 degree weather. Fingers felt like they were on fire. It was worth it. Great feeling, more than I can explain. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Worth waiting for your new video. So sweet. I watch over and over. Sweet music too. Rain or shine you were determined. Love it!
Thank you for your very kind comments! I guess the subscribers are being notified again. Yes, those cute little nuthatches were so friendly, I thought that sooner or later they would land on my hand. So I stayed with it despite my frozen pinkies. I thought about wearing gloves, but I wanted to feel their little feet perched on my hand. It was well worth it.
creatorwise I am convinced you are about as sweet as they are. Can't wait to get to heaven. Then they won't fear us. ❤️
You live on a beautiful property. Sanctuary for birds!
Thanks for the kind comments. Now I know 2 Bird Nerds from Canada!
Great captures my friend! Thank you for sharing the lovely video with us.👍😎JP
Many thanks, JP, for your very kind comments, and for being a frequent commenter! I really did "Enjoy Creating [this] Video!" It was so exciting, but my pinkies did get cold in the 32 degree temp. Lol.
Your very welcome Friend! it's been getting down to the lower 20s at night here in Washington hopefully it warms up to the 40s again.😎
MY arm is tired to watch this. HA HA Great feeling to become the Bird Whisperer your are.
Thank you for your very kind comment! Yes, my arm did get tired, and my fingers got cold also! I was really blessed to get to hand feed them. So great to hear from you again, In The Garden!
I was standing very still one day filling my bird bath when a red-breastes nuthatch landed on the feeder right in front of me. Best day ever! Glad to see you are posting again :). I too watch Lesley's videos and greatly enjoy them. Wo nderful you got the nuthatch to feed from your hand! That is one of my dreams.
Thank you so much for your very kind comments! Yes, my similar experience of the nuthatch landing so close, made me realize that these little darlings were friendlier than all the other birds, and maybe there was a chance I could hand-feed them. It was such an incredible thrill! If I can do it you can too, so don't give up on your dream! And you have apparently seen some of my other postings, so I do thank you for watching them also and for welcoming me back :)
Corrina Delongchamp I was doing the same, and a little baby recently fledged came and landed on my hand with the hose.
Same thing happened to me!
Wow!! I wanna see more of that!
Thanks for being first to comment! Glad you liked it! It was so exciting, yet humbling, to realize those little avian beauties trusted me enough to land on my hand and eat from it!
I do get these adorable birds at my feeders, but they are so skittish. I can’t even begin to imagine that they would eat out of my hand. God is good.
Thanks, Lora, so much for watching and for your great comment! Yes, God is good, and His ways are perfect!
You are so welcome. Have a wonderful day.
I love my red breasted nutatches. We have plenty up in Ontario. And yes, they let me hand feed them.
I'm jealous. This is the first time I've seen any in years. I love them! They are so friendly. I hand-fed them 4 times today with a closer view which I may post soon. One surprised my by landing on my hand while I was putting sunflower seed in it, before I even stretched out my hand! Unbelievably tame!
Very therapeutic. The _white_ breasted nuthatch is my spirit bird.
Yes it was. The white breasted aren't as tame around here. I felt the red-breasted, being so tame and friendly, was a gift from God, soothing my broken heart.
@creatorwise Thank you for making and sharing your video where you hand-feed the birds. WOW. You have the touch! Thanks again for blessing me with your thoughtful and encouraging comments, Ron! Hope you have a Merry Christmas full of wonder, hope, and love. Will any of the birds awaken you with their sweet singing on Christmas morning? :-)
You're welcome, a m! Thank you for using your gift for blessing others with such heart-warming sentiments, and for sending some of them my way! I did have a wonderful Christmas, thanks to my wonderful daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren surrounding me with their love and strength! I hope you had a blessed Christmas! I recently posted a follow-up video with a closer view of hand-feeding these adorable red-breasted nuthatches. ua-cam.com/video/5Ym92a9aU0k/v-deo.html Be sure to turn up the volume to hear their sweet little chirps! :-)
