    It's my impression that due to thermal issues the Mac Mini is the most powerful of the current M1 batch.

    Thank you! You put my mind at ease! I'm currently in a position where I need a new Mac for college but I can only afford the base 8gb model (which I just bought), and it's going to probably have to last me at least a couple years. Every other tech UA-camr is making it sound like I made a huge mistake and that unless you buy 16gb, you've basically thrown your money away on a brick, which put me in a state of panic. Thank you for the reassuring review. This is what I, and I'm sure a lot of others especially this past year needed to hear. Because not all of us can afford the best of the best, year after year. Maybe one day I will be one of those people who can drop an extra couple hundred dollars without thinking twice, but for the time being that's not a reality for me.

      If all you do is right word docs and the occasional light gaming then you'll be fine... but if you're doing rendering or compiling then your 8GB mac mini is going to chew through your SSD like nothing. Some people using 16GB mac mini's for work are reporting SSD life usage of up to 10% in just 2 months...
      I'm telling you all, wait 2 years and you'll be seeing these things break down left/right and center.

      Stories like this are showing me a side of Apple I never saw before (as a lifetime PC user who's buying a Mini). They seem to really know how to work their customers. And then, many of them go on to continue the "message." It's pretty dark IMO. You don't see this is PC-land.

    Three virtual drummers, 24 virtual instruments, 96 audio channels and more than a thousand plugins (over 318 of which were Space Designer) with a 128 sample buffer, all running in unison in Logic Pro on the 8gb version, it’s insanely good for music production and 8gb is plenty

    My experience with Mac computers for many years is that when you buy one with the minimum RAM level offered then your computer gets slow after 2-4 years but if you buy the next step of RAM your computer lasts much longer working link butter. I have a Macbook Pro from 2011 -that's 10 y.o. guys- and still runs like butter. Would that be the case if it had 8 GB? I don't think so. My experience says it would be not.

    Today, I bought the 8GB MacMini for 675 EUR. I doubt the new one that comes out in October will be that cheap. I'm sure the one I bought is fast enough for web-browsing, UA-cam, Office Apps, and watching tennis. The 16GB version costs 939 EUR so almost 50% more.

    I hate the Apple tax to upgrade, but they were genius in this aspect with the M series machines. Those who know they need heavy RAM will pay it. Those on the fence may or may not. But there's a big number of us who will let others be the test bed and publish results. In this, Apple hit a home run. 8GB machines that don't throttle are able to do amazing things with such low resources. Yes, swap may be an impact to SSD, I get that. But if a cheap machine lasts only 3-4 years, it's still a win compared to Windows machines trying to do the same. To get high level Apple type performance for such a cheap machine is demonstrative of how much they push developers to optimize for their silicon. I'm betting Apple insisted on high levels of performance from low specs so that Apple could maximize profit by selling performance against low specs, which increases profit margin.
    Yes, it sucks they do this, but at least they also made sure these machines perform in base configuration. I wish the MBA's could do the same but being fanless, they have to throttle to stay cool and that slows them in heavy workloads, but still....a $699 M1 MBA in 2024 that can still photo edit and handle decently heavy tasks is amazing when contrasted against doing that with a Windows computer from 4 years ago doing the same tasks in the same price range.

  • @Bassistking
    @Bassistking 3 роки тому +2

    Still grabbed the 16gb/1tb configuration. I figure m1 handles Big Sur nominally as they were designed for each other, but future MacOS versions years down the road would benefit from the extra RAM in comparison.

    Thank you, very well explained! I want to use the mini M1 8GB for home studio recording and connect to a 4K monitor.
    1) I have Studio One Pro software by Presonus for recording and editing. It is customized for M1 chip. The question is if the M1 mini is quiet when recording and the fan is not audible. I have a bad experience with Intel processor that does not work well when connected to a 4K monitor, it heats up a lot, is noisy and the processor goes into a clip.
    2) When editing video on a 4K monitor with the M1 mini 8GB is there no delay between the picture and sound? Is it possible to do precise synchronization when making videos?
    Thank you for the answer!

    Thank you for this hounest review.
    You see a lot of people on the internet who would not accept 8G of RAM. The PC league wouldn't understand it all of course.
    I'm going for the 8GB/512GB version as I basically only do email, office, some photoshop and illustrator, an occasional 2k video with iMovie and Fusion 360 for 3D printing design.
    It replaces my late-2013 Macbook Pro and my PC, both still are working fine but slow.
    I suppose that I can use the Mac Mini for the coming 6-8 years without a big problem.

But Im from a mac background and the mini has the ports I need so the laptop thing is not an option also it seems more robust than a Laptop where screens can go wrong and swollen batteries .My imac screen goes black from time to time. so no more CPU with scene for me.

    The 8GB RAM is performing similar to the 16GB version because.... the swap file on the SSD is read/writing extremely fast...great...except all that read/write from/to the SSD is going to push the drive to end of life (i.e. failure) way quicker than the 16GB version. The 16GB option is the smarter choice IMHO.

      For most folks, it’s a non-issue unless you plan on never upgrading for the next 10 years. Even at 50gb written a day, you are only talking about 18.25 TB writes a year. Modern SSD easily allows between 150-300 TB written before potential gradual failure so we’re talking a decade or more.

    You appear to have the Mac mini mounted under the desk. This might be blocking the Bluetooth signal reducing its reliability. If you take the bottom cover off of the machine you will notice a circular area made of plastic. This is for the radios. They don’t like metal. I suggest you might want to put the Mac on the desk rather than under it to see if it resolves the problem.

There is no question I would get 16 gig of ram. I would be pissed knowing my SSD drive was constantly being used because I didn't spend the $200 for the 16 gig of ram. I have not had any bluetooth issues.

    Had my M1 Mini for two weeks now...Beats hareadphones (blue tooth), keyboard, etc. No issues. Wireless is great. Even faster thru put as compared to my L2013 MP and iPad Pro. I got the 16GB/512GB model..Final Cut and Adobe LR/PS and it's all working great so far.

    Do you think an M1 iMac would be a better value than 27” Ultrafine + Mac Mini? Marco Arment isn’t very enthusiastic about the 27” ultrafine but it seems to be the best option at the moment. I just got an 8gb M1 Macbook Pro to hold me over until we know what options are available in 2021. I’d love to hear your opinions about monitor options. I’ve heard that most 4k 27” monitors are pretty meh with Macs (and that some monitors have usb-c that is pretty unreliable too)

      Tell me about it! This guy is the lone voice of reason among the tech UA-camr community. It put my mind at ease after Linus tech tips, Renee Ritchie, and company put me in a state of panic by making me think the only Mac I can realistically (barely) afford was obsolete before it was even released.

    No need for 16GB, render times etc are barely 7% faster with 16GB, not worth paying 30% more, also no need for a fan on an Arm powered device, I go Macbook Air M1, avoid the Pro. Also external SSD performs just fine if not better than internal SSD so just go for 256GB.

    • @JacksonHayes
      @JacksonHayes  3 роки тому +1

      You're right about the external SSD, half-right about the fan, and very wrong about the RAM.

    Mac os is not using only 8gb RAM ,its using memory from ssd so .
    The process can eat 16gb ram but ssd borrows 8 gb.
    Just make some math.
    A 4gb video will eat all 8gb ram when uncompressed so its a trick fans will say that Mac os is optimised same happens to iphones " ohh iphones can do everything with 4 gb ram what android do with 12gb ram"
